Went by today 5/16/2025 to check if the shop was really closed, unfortunately I saw an eviction notice. This is truly a shame. I loved coming here and visiting Agatha the sweet cat. Book prices were always reasonable and the selection was vast especially for a small shop. This was truly a hidden gem in our South Bay. I am not sure if the online service will still be available. I am going to be honest-- prices can get steep here. Not too steep, but steep enough. Regardless, this little shop makes me feel warm and welcome, and that is something that you can't put a price tag on. I love the cat, love the little quotes carefully placed all around the shop, and I love that I can really tell that the people who take care of this place love books just as much as me. Dave's Olde Bookshop is fantastic -- one of those bookshops with rows and rows of books. They don't have a large selection of "new releases", so you're better off just browsing and seeing what catches your eye, in my opinion. But they've got a nice, varied selection of books, and a bibliophile could easily spend a hour or two here. read more

Wow do I love this place. It has the book smell and coziness I expect from a small bookstore. The cat is an escape artist who loves to be petted and we never leave without finding a book of 2 for the boys and myself. They have started to carry more new books and so it's not just a used book store any longer and more popular titles might be new. The young adult/kid area has been expanding and they keep books in stock for local schools that the schools recommend like for Battle of the books. Huge Harry Potter selection for your kids. I usually just ask for what I need for my adult book club and they can tell me if they have it in stock quickly. It's really a great place to walk the aisles and find old favorites to read again or ask someone there for a recommendation. Love it! read more

I was blows away by the service i was provided. I came in requesting the horniest book for my most virgin-e-est friend. The guy smiled and said "right this way" ! He directed me to the "erotic" section which was unimpressive to say the least. HOWEVER. I was able to get what i needed and i was also graced by this cute kitty cats presence. Love this place. This was so cute and very well stocked! The front desk lady was incredibly warm and helpful. She even got on her hands and knees to help me find a book. We weren't ever able to find it (even tho computer said it was there) but she said she'd keep an eye out and put it aside for me if she found it. So nice. Will definitely return anytime I need a book. Used and new books. read more

They have a great selection of known authors and best sellers as well as lots of other interesting/lesser known titles if you're looking to be surprised. Quality, well-rounded book collection with some curated sections to help guide the casual browser (I dig the 'Banned Books' section). From the sleeping cat behind the counter to the art house music played over the speakers, Dave's feels both homey and sophisticated. I got the sense that if I asked for a recommendation from the man behind the counter, whatever was suggested would be the greatest book I'd ever read. I'm sure I could Google this, but I'd love to know if they have a newsletter with book recommendations and best new arrivals. Also, I went in on Mother's Day and they gave out free coffee mugs to moms (even plant moms). I can't think of the last time I got a freebie from a store. I don't even really write reviews, but I'm currently enjoying my morning coffee from that mug and it's inspired me to share my thoughts. Absolutely positively recommend. I walked into this store on a whim. Anyone from the north Redondo area, or anyone who has ever driven Westbound on Artesia through this part of town has undoubtedly noticed this quaint little bookstore. If you are an intellect or just enjoy reading, but have never stopped in, then maybe you have told yourself "I will have to check this place out sometime" or "I will definitely go in one day". Let me tell you, you owe it to yourself to pay this shop a visit. You will not regret it. There is a vibe of a time gone by that is still very much flourishing in the present. There is something about being in a book store that feels cozy and brings a sense of belonging. Plus, this place even has a pet cat! This is one of the best, not only bookshops in the South Bay, but the greatest group of people, owner and staff!! Hands down! How could you not love Agatha the Cat (well of course, maybe allergies)! My son has behavioral and learning struggles, but here he loves to get a book, sit and read! It really calms him to be able to pet Agatha!! It's incredible! As an a avid reader myself, I'm so happy to finally have found a place that my son can share the love of reading! I finally stopped at this eye catching magical looking shop. The shop is really great. The selection of books is well, curated, perfectly organized, and artistically displayed. Experience was excellent. The addition of the very friendly cat, Agatha, made the store seem even more magical. Private owned and operated used book store. I have started going there to get used books before the pandemic. It was the best holiday season at 2019 when I brought 10 books for 70 bucks and read them all during the winter break. It is where I also bought my very own first edition of my favorite author. It was really great experience going in to the shop. I don't know much about the business now but pandemic ruined many private business and burdened some. I felt this one is somewhat affected too. Last week I called and they have stopped buying used books and the books from my author are all now counter price. No discount anymore. I understand the changes and if I ever need to buy paper books I'll check here first. It is just different experience. Less used book feeling more like a normal bookstore. I used to love coming to Dave's. He was a sweetheart, the shelves were orderly and you could always find an interesting non-fiction book in pretty good condition. I've been in a number of times since the change in ownership and each time the subject sections are more disorderly with some books piled rather than shelved vertically. There is still interesting content but more difficult to browse. Perhaps they are trying to squeeze in more books. The prices are a little higher now, which is understandable. However, it feels that there are different levels of welcome-ness for patrons entering the shop. read more

Literally one of my favorite used bookstores. The interior is nice and cozy and i spent hours in the romance section. This is a small, independent bookstore with curated titles. You might not be able to find what you are looking for, but you will find many books you didn't realize you need. Great shop! Very excited to have a such a nice bookstore close by. Whole family loved it. Reminded our niece of the Apple series "Ghostwriter." We were looking for a specific title they didn't have, but left with two other books because there were so many great options to choose from. As a bonus, the adorable shop cat choose to spend time with us in the kids corner getting lots of love. She might have been hiding out because she sat on the computer/register earlier, causing it to freeze up. We weren't bothered at all (because cats, what can you do?), and just took more time to browse and love on Agatha. Definitely will be a returning soon. read more

This store is a jewel in a rapidly-changing world, and I am glad to have found out about it via word of mouth. For those of us who remember losing hours while browsing densely-packed shelves of books, Dave's Olde Book Shop (new name pending via new ownership?) gives me all those wonderful feelings. Pricing seems fair to me, a little more than what I've seen at local (PV) library book sales... but the selection seems well curated. Am excited to see what this new incarnation of a tangible book store might offer in the coming years. We need to encourage those who encourage us to "Read More", and this seems to be the perfect opportunity to help those who are like-minded build a new bookshop community. I was really excited to see a local bookstore come to Redondo. I have lived here for 28 yrs and I have bought a few books here and really enjoy the associates who work here as they have been so helpful. Unfortunately today though I noticed a sign in the window that would deter me from patronizing this store anymore. It's always really disheartening to see businesses get involved in local politics when these are business for the community no matter who the representative is. I support local business because makes meaningful impact. But when business start getting involved in politics when they should just be neutral is really sad. this is how to lose clients. read more

I'll never go kindle or nook! I love the feeling of roaming through bookshelves to find treasures and journeys to embark upon. The spines or covers draw me in and then holding the book in my hand while reading the description hooks me. This last time we went in my daughter wanted to sell some of her books and then bought #1, 2, and 4 of the Nancy Drew series - without knowing if she'd even like #1. We will go back for #3 and I'm sure we'll find it eventually. On a whim I mentioned a book I'd been carrying around in my wishlist and they had the exact Joan Didion book I'd hoped for. I've been going to Dave's since my mom moved to a nearby neighborhood a few years back. She has since moved from that location, but whenever I fly in to visit, I've always paid a visit to Dave's no matter where I was driving from in LA. It is a very special used bookstore, and those that frequent this place know. On my most recent visit I noticed that my favorite section was no longer where it used to be. Other sections were moved around as well. I found book prices on sticker labels, instead of being written on the inside cover. I also, noticed that prices were a few dollars more expensive than usual. I had to ask, and was surprised and very sad to find out that Dave sold his bookstore. The new owner is very nice. He said he was moving in the direction of including selling new books and after asking him if he was going to change the name, he said not for about a year. Dave's Olde Book Shop has a specific personality, sensibility, small detail that makes it special. I'd drive from almost anywhere, sometimes 40+ minutes away just to shop there. It was one of the best used bookstores I've visited across the US. The book selection, Dave's conversation and willingness to always cut you a deal all really made this place unique. This isn't a horrible bookstore, this just isn't Dave's Olde Book Shop, so hopefully the name will change soon and reflect the new owner and business model. Keeping the old name is very misleading. read more

This place is a gem hidden in the concrete jungle of LA. He has an awesome selection of classic books, some dating black to mid 1800s. And of course, contemporary reads as well. You can trade your books for store credit, or donate them as well. Glad to see theres a place like this still open in the area. read more

So neat and organized! When I visited in 2017, it felt cluttered. ( Even though I loved the selection.) Now, a customer can walk freely throughout the store without tripping over anything. Today, I bought: 1) a Brazilian Portuguese-English dictionary and 2) Maximum City, Bombay Lost and Found by Suketu Mehta. Dave's old book store is a charming book store in the city of Redondo Beach. It's hard to describe how good used books smell but if you know--then you know. As you walk through the aisles a kitty will grace your feet and you will see some of the most beautifully bound books you've ever seen. Each spine of the book has so much character. Generations of carefully picked books grace the shelves and the merchant has a story for each one. I had a very Carrie (from Sex in the City) moment walking through. Sorry, I cannot recommend this place. It was much better before Dave sold it. I was told I could use a credit from when Dave owned it and yet when I went to redeem it they would not accept. Also, Dave would take your unwanted books and give you a credit to purchase books from the store. The new owner does not do that; if you want to donate you get nothing for your books. I'm not giving them thousands of dollars worth of books for them to sell and get paid for when I can sell on amazon. The selection is not that great either. The kitten is cute though! read more
