Sand Piper gave me pebble beach vibes, the time I went was gloomy but I can tell during a sunny or sunset day it would be beautiful. There are sweeping views of the ocean and not many trees to block it out. The range balls were $8 for 25 balls and $25 for 80 balls. The range was a grass range and had a lot of use on one side, but you could walk down a bit further and hit on better conditions. read more

We played on a Saturday afternoon, and the weather was just perfect. The ocean and sky were absolutely beautiful. The course layout was really fun and interesting, and the cool ocean breeze made it feel great--even though the wind made the ball hard to control at times. As expected the views at Sandpiper are stunning. We were lucky enough to have clear and mild weather during our round which really made our experience fun. If you're off the tee game is good, the course is fun and rewarding. If you are spraying drives then Sandpiper becomes a much longer course (and is already a long course to begin with). The staff is very pleasant and welcoming from the starters, club house, and waitstaff. The food was good and reasonably priced. My only real gripe is likely due to circumstance. Sandpiper is likely to close soon for major restoration so I understand some construction is underway. However, for the price of our round, I was surprised how some of the hole's fairways were nearly unplayable. I'm not sure if there was even acknowledgement from the clubhouse about the condition of some of the holes. For the $$, I'd probably avoid playing here again until after the renovations are complete. read more

Its Two Star 2uesday again!!!!! I haven't played Sandpiper in Goleta (Santa Barbara area) in more than 20 yrs. I recall my past experiences being positive. There are some scenic holes, and you are in the SB area. However, after a five hour round (4 1/2 hrs is the usual maximum, and 4 hrs is the desired time), I hope I don't play here again any time soon. In addition to the painfully slow round, there were some other undesirable factors. For example, when I paid for my round, there is an option to tip the guy in the pro shop. I play a lot of golf, and this is the first time I have ever seen this. Secondarily, there are some holes that are unfair. On the front nine, there is a long par 3 that requires you land your ball in front of the green. The greens are very fast here for a resort type course, and if your ball is above the pin (flag), you will be hard pressed to putt your ball near the pin. I did exactly what is required here, but my ball scooted to the back fringe. I was lucky to two putt from there to make a 3 (par). On the back nine, the greens slow down bc the grass grows during the day. Its easy to three putt a green (two putts is the norm). On #10 I hit the center of the green below the pin. I was in the desired position. However, bc the greens were so fast on the front nine, I left myself a long second putt that I missed. I made a 4 on a hole that I should have made a 3: Not happy! Likewise, on a par 5 on the back nine, there is no where to land your ball on your second shot, that leaves you a desirable third shot to hit your ball onto the green. I hit a good drive, but could not hit close to the green bc I was in the rough (grass). I had to "layup". The problem is the layup area is approximately 150 yds out bc there is a ravine that affects your 2nd & 3rd shots. Most layup areas are inside more manageable distances (100 yds or less). I had to hit the perfect shot to clear the ravine and a bunker (sand trap), to be near the green. Unfortunately, I hit a bad shot and lost my ball: I was pissed! Lastly, this course normally costs around $250. We were lucky and only paid $80 bc one of our friends has a membership. Nonetheless, they should have a marshal to monitor slow play. The group ahead of us was dillydallying all day, and did nothing to speed up their pace of play. We waited on every single shot, on every single hole. The slow play coupled w/ some unfair holes led to a very frustrating day, and even longer drive back to OC. read more

The degradation that Ty Warner has overseen is inexcusable. The course is in poor condition. There are areas of mud and standing water in the fairways when no rain has occurred. Multiple strains of grass populate the fairways. The bunkers have little or no sand. They play more like a firm dirt road. The bathrooms between the 6th and 7th holes are disgusting. The men's urinal has been covered by a black plastic bag for more than two months. There is no soap in the broken dispenser. No towels. It looks like a bathroom at a third-world truck stop. The health department should take a look. This used to be a first-class golf course. No more. It's sad that Ty Warner, who knows nothing about golf, has allowed this to happen. The only reason for a second star is that the property itself offers excellent views of the ocean. read more

Good layout with a mix of fun holes (h6, h11, h13, h14) with a few quirky ones (5, 7, 12 & 17). Range is grass but not great visually down range. Good short game area off the side of hole 1. Putting green is large but Average. Good airy and scenic environment with less trees than years past. Pro shop courtesy was better than most. Food from the grill was above average too. What's not to like at this glorious golf course? You're along the water, the conditions are pristine, and the routing has enough holes with a view that you almost feel like you're at Pebble. Sure, you're gonna get a little bit of slow play around this place so you might have a 4.5, maybe 5 hour round if you're not lucky... but do you have somewhere better to be than out at Piper?! Overpriced and overrated. I have no problem paying to play good golf, but for the same money at a number of other great courses in California the value is exponentially higher. No range access for an 8ish AM tee time. No water on the course and a beverage cart that didn't start until we reached the 15th hole. The course conditions were also less than desirable with standing water on a variety of holes, muddy bunkers, and insanely lumpy tee boxes. I was truly looking forward to playing here for the first time, but this is easily crossed off the list for golf in the area for all the reasons mentioned. To their credit, the staff were all very welcoming and friendly but this is a one and done visit. read more

Staff and cart/starter guys are good. Nice views of the ocean and mountains. Greens are unusually firm and fast, like a glass surface, with little grip of the ball...the wind on #17 green can push the ball downhill! divots on the green are hard to fix. That reminds me, not enough sand is given on the carts to repair fairway divots, so lots of holes on fairways for your ball to fall into. Maybe that relates to the sandtraps are often lacking sand, so stay out of them! #4 tee was pretty lumpy. #13, par 5, along the bluff has a two scary overgrown canyons and a small green that requires some good shooting, about 140 yards in the air from a downward leaning plateau. Ball washing is forbidden evidently...nothing on the cart or at each hole. Watch out on #16 fairway for driving range balls coming through! I got hit in the head by one. In celebration of my husband's birthday, I searched for a course that we had never played. I didn't mind the cost, because I wanted to splurge a bit. When I saw the drone footage of the course on the website, the course appeared to be pristine and immaculate. Our friends, husband, and I eagerly looked forward to our tee time and celebrating in style for his birthday. Our excitement quickly dissipated by the time we got to hole 3. We couldn't believe how poorly kept the course is and quite frankly, we felt like we were bamboozled. With the exception of the beautiful view, Sandpiper was not a hallmark golf experience. The grass was poorly kept, many of the tee boxes were in poor condition, not once did we see a beverage cart to purchase snacks or drinks, there were no trash cans along the course to dispose of water bottles or other trash, the bathrooms (I think near hole 7) weren't clean, the clubhouse is in desperate need of a renovation, and when we returned the cart, the staff didn't wipe off our golf clubs. When the amenities are outdated, the service is subpar, and the course is poorly kept, what could possibly justify the cost of $215 per person?! We golf regularly and have played on some really nice courses and have had nice golf experiences (Desert Willow, Rancho Bernardo, and Kierland to name a few). I think it's absolutely despicable that Sandpiper would charge such outlandish rates and purport to offer a world class experience and award worthy and celebrated course that is clearly from decades ago when the course was in better condition. The website and about us page is quite misleading and people such as myself, have fallen for what Sandpiper proclaims. Our experience was an utter disappointment. Until such time they can offer a true $215 experience, the rates should be adjusted to reflect what patrons are getting. read more

I don't know where to start! This course is definitely the most outstanding and beautiful course I have ever played. It is a tough and longer course! The grass was a beautiful green and happily I had good weather while playing. The greens are definitely the defense of this course! The greens are hard and very fast but absolutely gorgeous! You are very happy with 2 putts! The staff were very friendly and were very helpful! I didn't meet one person without a smile on their face! Everyone was knowledgeable and helpful with directions. The snack area on the turn was very clean even though I didn't get a snack I could tell they had good food by the smell! This course is definitely doing it right and this course should be on every golfers dream list to play! I will definitely be coming back!!! read more

$215 dollars for: 1 old golf cart, 18 holes of golf on a course that is obviously unloved and uncared for. Even though we are in a drought, you could do a little better..if you can't, then lower your price. The golf shop and cafe was very underwhelming. It's a shame, because it a great property. No real coolers...but if they don't run out you might get a small cooler bag with a bit of ice. This is no where near the quality of the pebble beach courses. The only thing and I mean the only thing, are the ocean views. I will no longer pay that kind of money to golf there...I will wait until after 2pm and pay the $80. This would be a fun course if inconsistent green speeds are your thing (some greens were playing ~12 stimp and others were playing ~8) and diseased, bumpy greens are another thing that tickles your fancy. This course is in the worst shape of any golf course in So Cal. Griffith park in LA is in better condition, a dog track in Bakersfield is in better condition. Here, the greens are covered in a black fungus, the fairways dry and wet and dead and full, all within the same 30 yards the bunkers are mud and rock and dirt and the pace is slower than a one legged horse walking up a hill, They should win an award alright. For the most overpriced, poorly run golf course in the State and possibly the country. read more

Um. I'm not a golfer. Well, unless you count Mini-Golf. But. One morning I was flipping through Roadside America looking for a spark for a lil daytrip. I had just gotten a job and I felt I deserved a lil adventure. But not a huge costly adventure. I came across a very odd and interesting bit of history that most probably don't know of. On February 23, 1942, 69 days after the attack at Pearl Harbor, the Japanese submarine I-17 appeared off the coast of California north of Santa Barbara at the Barnsdall-Rio Grande Oil Field at Ellwood and began shelling the oil and gasoline tanks located there. After a 20-minute bombardment the submarine sunk back into the murky waters and departed. Had a shell hit the gasoline tanks or exploded when oil workers were present, the damage could have been more catastrophic. As it turned out, this was a nuisance raid and only a footnote to the history unfolding in the World's Greatest War during the next five years. In essence, the Japanese attempted to blow up an oil field, but instead, they shot up a golf course. And it's a lovely golf course. The people were nice. I got a tasty BLT Wrap, a cold and delicious iced tea, and dined outside on a lovely April afternoon. It was a bit blustery. But the sun was shining and it was still a good time. The people who stopped at the cafe seemed to be having a good time golfing there. So yeah. Neat lil bit of history. Neat lil diner, Gorgeous golf course with views of the ocean. I kinda sorta maybe wanted to learn to play the game. Which I'm sure they could have taught me. Definitely check it out if you're in the area. read more

What a disappointment! Make sure to read the recent reviews. We played last Thursday and the course was in pretty bad shape. LA city courses are better off than sandpiper right now yet Sandpiper was $190 and played like a $20-$30 course. it's too bad too because the course has a great links style layout, kind of like rustic Canyon in LA but way shittier condition. Some great views and holes on the back nine but again, kind of marred by the huge patches of brown, dirt, inconsistent sand traps, inconsistent greens and chunked up patches. recommend playing Glen Annie instead. My stepdad also played there the same week and said it was in much better condition and a fraction of the price. I'd pay $50 to play here but no more. read more

Must admit, the regular non resident green fee is too much. I think it's a beautiful place and the course is pretty good. Starter guys are always pleasant and no complaints with the customer service at any level. If you plan want to get out that way 4-5 times a year I recommend buying the Preferred Players Card. At $500 buck a year you get 4 free rounds and local rates after that. Good deal. read more

So sad to see what Sandpiper looks like now as opposed to when it was well maintained. Apparently Ty Warner still owns it, and given what has happened to Rancho San Marcos, not surprised that management has ruined this course. I played this course for many years when it was indeed like a Pebble Beach south. Now it's a disaster - and at the price it's charging, an embarrassing rip off. I played it last week with friends from out of town and they were shocked - even the young staff at the desk and cart shack, who are so nice and polite, cringe when you complain about the condition -shaking the heads indicating "I know". The fairways are filled with dirt and holes, the approaches around the greens are hard rocks and gravel; the sand traps have no fresh sand -like concrete. It doesn't take much to tend to the tee boxes - totally ignored. Hopefully some one will come in and Warner will be gone or they'll terminate his lease. If you're coming from a distance, keep driving and play La Purisima; if you're local and out in Goleta, play the par 3 at Twin Lakes. It's in as bad shape as Sandpiper but it only costs $15. Given all the other reviews like this one of golfers playing this course recently, you would think management would at least lower the prices until they fix up the course so they stop stealing people's money. I guess not. Management: please wake up and fix the course. Warner's supposedly a billionaire. Ask him to spend some of the money he's raking in by duping tourists on maintenance. read more

Played Dec. 13, 2021 before the rain. Stayed at Hilton Garden Inn in Goleta, very convenient and nice. Ate breakfast at Sandpiper Grill for the view. Expected food to be better, but staff was nice. Breakfast served in paper boxes, plastic utensils even for seated dining. Wouldn't take much to make it better. In hindsight, we'd have better breakfast at the hotel. Pro shop staff very helpful and kindly sent our twosome ahead of a foursome. It was windy, to be expected. Not busy and we passed twosome ahead of us, finishing in 3.5 hrs. or less, so were able to head north ahead of the rain. Much appreciated. As others have mentioned, and the staff know, the course is very rough in areas, ridiculously bad in others - i.e. large aeration clumps, etc. - and not worth the $140 each we paid ( voucher price ). Certainly not worth the rack rate. The greens were in good shape, as were a few fairways. We live on Monterey coast, so are spoiled by ocean view courses, and maybe harder to impress. We had also just played The Ranch at Alisal for $140/each, which was in excellent shape, and The River course there for $50/each. Fair price for Sandpiper $55-65, with cart, for current conditions. Since the weather prevented us from playing Glen Annie, we'll be back and hopefully Sandpiper will be in better shape. We were expecting it to be more like Half Moon Bay Ocean courses, with similar Pro Shop and restaurant facilities. It's not. It is a pretty basic muni on an exceptional piece of property and nice, eager to please staff! Wait to play it. read more
