For some context; my partner and I had been together about 3 years, and were seriously considering marriage. I was interested in sort of laying out the internals of our relationship to therapist/counselor to see if there were any red flags we should be aware of, and talk through anything that could potentially be problematic for a long term relationship. Most importantly, Dr. Lillie is incredibly competent in her line of work, and can remarkably quickly ask the important questions to guide couples to new perspectives on their relationship. The way that Dr. Lillie interacted with my partner and I was not only transformative in the way we think, but carried care, empathy, and psychological safety. I never felt judged, only heard, but still was compelled to change my thinking about some foundational pillars of being in a relationship. I worked with Sandy for several years on and off as a patient. Advice I received from her was unethical and in direct conflict with patient and doctor privilege. Specifically she seemed to be primarily motivated by money and not the care of her patient. There was also a conflict of interest regarding doctor and patient privilege that I found out about later after working with another therapist and discussing recommendations from Sandy. I do not recommend Sandy in the future for couples therapy. Please look elsewhere for a more ethical therapist. read more

No lie, Sandy saved my marriage. She's insightful, compassionate, non-judgmental, direct, and extremely perceptive about the emotional patterns my partner and I brought to our sessions together. One session with Dr. Lillie was more than enough for me. In twenty years of being a therapy consumer, I have never, ever had therapy in someone's living room, but this is where Dr. Lillie, PhD conducts her business. Several licensed therapists raised their eyebrows and expressed their concern about this when I mentioned it to them, and together we wondered whether or not this was more of a hobby for Dr. Lillie than a vocation. I had a negative experience overall with Dr. Lillie. She pressured me to allow her to record our sessions for her EFT certification, and/or for her peer/clinical supervision. I said no, several times, but she told me (several more times) to think about it. I had absolutely no interest in this. She also put the hard sell on the Hold Me Tight couples group workshops, which are periodically held somewhat locally and cost about $900 for a weekend retreat (plus lodging). I got the feeling that she might get a commission of some sort for hawking this expensive "solution." Dr. Lillie represents herself as being a licensed psychologist on her website and in person. She also charges $250 per hour, commensurate with licensed mental health professionals in the area. She does not take insurance, and accepts checks, credit cards (with an additional $7 processing fee), and cash. However, despite what she represented on her website, and the session fees to match, Dr. Lillie's license expired in October of 2014, according to the California Board of Psychology; it was still expired at the time that I had my appointment, almost two years later. I found this out after the fact, when I was filing a complaint with this licensing board for transphobic remarks I felt that Dr. Lillie had made in session and in writing afterward. It took several tries to get her to send me a receipt for the "services" she rendered, and when she finally sent it, she neglected to include evidence of the $7 extra processing fee I'd also paid. So in short, an unlicensed therapist saw me for an appointment in the open living room of her private home, made me feel extremely uncomfortable in a variety of ways, charged me $257 for the privilege, and took a while to provide me with an inaccurate receipt. Save your money and your time, and buy the Hold Me Tight book. Alternatively, visit a competent, licensed psychotherapist. read more

I can't recommend Sandy enough. I've been fortunate to know her over several years and in the context of two very different relationships. In both Sandy's counsel and care were invaluable. I never give 5 stars to anyone or any business but I must give Sandy my all. She is personable, understanding, gracious and just good to the core. She really and truly cares about your well being as a human being. Her insight into what you are explaining is remarkable. I have been having trouble actually making an appointment with a therapist because it is not an avenue I was taught as a child and in my culture we should be able to solve our own issues. I finally had the courage to find someone and I was lucky that Sandy was my first try. She listened and guided without judgement and was able to help me start to move forward. Some on here are negative about her location but it is just right for a truly caring therapist. The aesthestics are warm and friendly and family oriented. My husband and I turned to Sandy when it seemed like we were starting to walk on different paths. It sounds kitchy, but in 'five meetings or less' we were back on track. Sandy provided a warm and comfortable environment where we could get to the bottom of our challenges and rebuild together. For years, I've tried to get my husband, love of my life, to eat healthier, and he just wouldn't freekin do it, and it drove me nuts. I once had an ex boyfriend tell me, guys are the worst with this. I have been struggling with some difficult events and people in my life and a good friend recommended that I see Sandy. My friend described Sandy as very skilled, down to earth, honest, insightful, warm, and caring. All of these attributes were what I also experienced. I read them and went to my next session with even more to discuss as the contents of the books were immediately applicable to my situation. It was helpful to have two modes of working on the issues which troubled me. I believe Sandy's longer-than-normal sessions are very beneficial as we covered lots of material without interruption and could spend as much time as was needed on issues without feeling rushed. As a result after eight sessions I felt I had made enough progress to move forward on my own. I appreciated having the sessions in Sandy's home as it is warm and inviting. I found Sandy on Yelp last summer when I was at a turning point in a 13-year relationship. Having to decide whether to continue working at being a couple or splitting up amicably was the question. Sandy's guidance as we tried to patch things up and work at being closer lead us to a number of tools like actually having a negotiated agreement over difficult issues instead of a power struggle where no one wins. Through several months of Sandy being very direct about our couple dynamics, I came to the personal decision that I no longer wanted to be in couples' therapy. However, I did want to continue working with her and my Ex to split in the best possible way for the sake of us having a child & owning a business together. Sandy now functions more as a mediator and if either I or my Ex need to vent about each other, we each take 20 minutes separately with Sandy alone and then come together for 35 minutes.
