Meanwhile they require you to wait for a room inspection upon check out if you pay cash. For almost $130 a night in a queen room that's super cozy (read as small). Carpet felt moist, not wet, but moist. Terrified to shine a black light in the room. Won't be back, not even on a bet. Customer service is a joke. read more

I would give this place negative 5 stars if I could based on their "customer service". In desperate need of a place to stay the night, my boyfriend and I booked this place on booking.com. (I was not able to read all of the AWFUL reviews in that time span) It took 45 minutes to check us in and once we were inside of the room we decided that even though it was so late we could not spend the night there. The room was dirty and disgusting. It smelled like stale cigarettes, there were bugs, and the floor was cheap linoleum. They had broken a lawn chair in lieu of real chair, it was just awful. So, after no more than 10 minutes of being disgusted I told the front desk man (short, scrawny guy with greying hair) that we were leaving because the room was so dirty. He told us he would check the room and comes back after about 5 minutes to tell us that, wait for it, THE ROOM WAS CLEAN BEFORE WE CHECKED IN AND WE MADE IT DIRTY SO HE WAS GOING TO CHARGE US A $30 CLEANING FEE. Of course when I expressed my feelings about why it was wrong to charge someone a "cleaning fee" when they are fleeing your filthy hotel to the A*hole desk guy, he was still going to refuse to refund me so I refused to let him help anybody until he refunded me. SO, he called the police who showed up and TOLD THE A*HOLE TO REFUND ME. They also told me that they had been called to this place many times before to deal with shady people/meth heads. Of course this POS didn't refund the ridiculous cleaning fee. I did end up getting a nice and beautiful room at the ramada inn for a huge discounted rate because it was so late at night already so my night was not completely ruined. Unclean, unprofessional, felt unsafe, very disappointed. Poor quality lock on the door. Decided to book at another location. Manager Marcos has repeatedly refused to give me my money back after I did not stay at this location. Contacted Marcos several times and they kept promising to follow up but never did. Who I am: Twenty-something year old wine enthusiast/foodie. What I want in a room: Somewhere clean and comfortable to stumble back to after a long day of wine tasting. When I travel I hardly ever spend time in the room other than to sleep and shower. Value: Pros -Suuuuper affordable. Every place to stay in the surrounding area was basically 100+ and as a college student that's not a realistic possibility. A king size bed with double occupancy was 52/night. That's pretty impressive considering how close we are to downtown. Cons: -N/A Room: Pros: -Curtains never let any light in. The room was clean and didn't smell like smoke which is a must for me because I have wimpy asthma ridden lungs that freak out. TV with good channels. Plenty of outlets for electronics (between the both of us we each had laptops, cell phones and a camera). The bathroom pressure was great and I never ran out of hot water. There were four different wifi options so no matter what room you stayed in the signal was pretty strong. Plenty of parking near your room no matter how full the place gets. Cons: -No full length mirror. This is kind of a must when you're a female. No iron. No closet (just a metal rack with no hangers). There was no iron but to their credit there really would be no place to put one. The walls are a little thin but it wasn't too bad. They were remodeling the room directly next to ours but they didn't begin working until about nine so we had time to sleep in a bit. There wasn't any stationary or a pen which I like to have handy at any time. Randoms: Staff was very friendly and always available. I made a reservation online and somehow they never had any record of it , but we got a room so no harm. I strongly encourage you to call when booking a room so you can speak to a human. Make sure you get a name and confirmation number. Bottom line: if you're not a princess and want a comfortable place to spend the night on a get away this place is pretty awesome. We booked a room for two nights which was 230$. We told him we had 2 adults and one child but he wanted to see everyone's ID but the child underage didn't have one. He then let us buy the room we went into our room and just five minutes later the manager calls us and says if we don't get the child's ID he was going to call the cops. We agreed to have the cops come handle it which then the police told us he does this very often and takes people's money but they couldn't do anything. So he kicked us out and took our money and we weren't even there for 10 minutes! DO NOT COME HERE. He will steal your money!!!! read more

After reading all the bad yelp reviews I was definitely worried this place was going to be horrible -- But it was fine! It's certainly not luxurious by any means.... But if you are looking for an affordable place to crash then it definitely gets the job done. My room was clean - I didn't have a problem with any bugs or see any in my room - the Bed was clean and comfortable - the Shower worked well and the TV was new and nice - However I must say, the Internet Wifi was definitely pretty spotty, [but i didn't need to use my labtop for anything important so that didn't really matter to me - I just used my phone's internet instead] --- Also FYI , there's no coffee maker inside the room. [The Inn claims there's free coffee in the lobby, but it's basically just a hot water dispenser. I didn't see any coffee or filters ect near the lobby's coffee machine...I was fiddling around with the lobby machine for a few minutes and none of the front desk people offered to help or assist me in making coffee -- but then again, I didn't ask for help either -- I'm sure they would have helped me if I would have asked -- but I was just lazy and since there was a Chevron gas station about 200 yards from the Inn I just went there for my coffee instead] I would recommend bringing your own towel and soap/shampoo since the stuff the hotel gives you is pretty basic. Other than that though, I have no complaints. I'd put this place on par with a Motel 6 -- It's nothing fancy but if you're a low maintenance person then it should work fine -- If you're the type of person who likes a super classy place then this spot is not for you -- [it ain't the Four Seasons!] I just wanted to write this review because I read so many 1 star horror stories --- and I wanted to share my experience since I found it fine for my purposes read more

ASTOUNDING BEAUTIFUL IMPROVEMENTS TO AN OLD LEGEND i have stayed at 'the reef' many times since 2005 so i know it well. it was originally a truckstop-like motel on the Camino Real. my early stays were not too impressive. i will not go into details about then. I was lured by the huge hot-tub/spa, so just chilled out... and the spa IS fabulous. NOW however, i will. I WAS SHOCKED WHEN I OPENED THE DOOR... bright colors, sparkling floors, new custom-built desk/wall unit holding a small fridge that was clean and cold, a microwave, and then the huge, new HD tv with a working remote, and a comfy queen bed. Also, the air conditioner has a 'fan' position that stays on... a big issue for me. THIS WAS FIRST CLASS at an 'affordable' motel. I look forward to staying with them again. Its my ONLY destination when in Carpinteria. My stay was great, and the manager took care of some of the worst occupants I have EVER heard in my 75 years. They were crude, only shouted all things, slammed car and room doors, and this was at 11pm. Absolutely uncivilized, from another country. The next morning, they were evicted, problem solved. At least the older-style heavy wood doors offered a good safety feeling and some reduction of the shouting din. The owner is making needed improvements and has some things that still need attention. they are getting to them which will make 'the reef' more popular in the future. This is my destination, and I enjoy all the improvements, and the good staff who took care of my needs, especially clearing out the vermin tenants. If you want a nice stay w/out breaking your bank and don't expect white glove five star everything, 'the reef' is the place. I'm sure you will enjoy your stay. I did! PS... Kim's convenience store is just a block north and has home cooked Mexican foods to go. Very good and convenient. If you want more exotic fare, 'downtown' is just a mile away for all variety of foods and some beach vendors too. then there is always pizza delivery. :) read more

Checked in here for a short trip obviously not expecting anything fancy but the tv was broken the room smelled bad and the shower head sprays outside of the shower onto the floor. Whoever installed this shower head clearly installed it wrong. It is almost impossible to take a shower if you are short forget it. The front desk did nothing to help the issue and just said they would let the maintenance guy know. Like I said I wasn't expecting anything fancy but at least a working shower and TV. It was the cheapest place we could find and that was at $100 a night. The rooms were good size, the beds were ok and bathrooms were of good size. That's the good, now the bad. The room was dark no matter how many lights we turned on. parking was a mess, it's first come first serve and it's a small parking area. They had a BBQ area that had some sketchy people using it, the outside decore looked like something you find down in Tijuana, Mexico. And the bathroom had a window to a back alleyway, that had something eating on wood every night, the shower area was old looked it. Bad times at the Sandyland Reef Inn, Absolutely the most Awful, I would not stay at any price even if I was payed to stay there cheap, dirty, ugly, bug ridden, transient stayin, unbelievably rude staff, very noisy, no sound proofing, mold in shower having, right next to freeway and all around horrific place-should be shut down. It teminded me of the horrot mivie Bad Times at the Hotel Royale. read the bad reviews-they will tell the real story about this operation-The 5 star reviews may have been written by someone other than hotel guests possibly. On Friday May 4th 2018, Saturday May 5th and Sunday the 6th a family member wedding party checked into this Sandyland Reef Inn. There was a small incident that was not damage or theft related early Sunday morning that was BLOWN WAY OUT OF PROPORTION. One person that had planned to leave at the 11:00 checkout had been told to leave the premises. Nobody knew this being that this happened around 1:00 am Sunday. He left the premises at that time. I (we) had no idea of his whereabouts. He had no room key cell phone, or his belongings on him due to being ushered out. It wasn't until about 8:00am (3 hours prior to checkout) that he came on the property to shower and get his belongings. They saw that he was back and called the sheriffs again and within 25-30 minutes they arrived and told me we had been evicted. This was the first time hearing this. They felt this Bull$hit earned them the deposit....and $95.00 2 days later on a credit card for who knows what. THAT'S STEALING IN MY BOOK!!!! NEVER GO TO THIS PLACE. Do NOT stay here. This place will rip you off. My daughter (15 yrs old) and I stayed for one night on our way home from a tournament in Santa Cruz. They charged us for the room and $100 incidental fee, which they said I would get back in 2 to 5 business days. I thought that was kind of strange, but we were tired from driving so we stayed. Never saw my $100 again. They claimed we trashed the room with wine stains on the bed/towels and left the room a total mess. Mind you, we arrived at 8:30 at night, went and got food at the pizza place, came back watched a movie, slept and left at 7:00 am to go home. Unfortunately, I did not catch the charge until a later date. I called the hotel and the manager, Ivy, told me they had pictures. I asked to see them. She said it would take a little time, so I called back a couple days later. Ivy tells me that it has been too long of a time and they won't look for the pictures. Please do not stay here, it is not that great of a place anyways. They will take your money. Total scam!!! read more

This hotel is not a good place to stay, the front desk receptionist was rude from start to finish. I have never received such a bad welcoming from any hotel I have stayed at before. I felt as though it was racially motivated and when I asked questions she made rude comments back to me. When I asked about the smoking policy the receptionist pointed at a security screen and said I guess you don't pay attention, when I asked exactly where it was located on the property. Especially since I was told by her that if my family member smoked in the room or even outside the room my $50.00 room deposit I had to pay because I used my debit card wouldn't be refunded back to me after my stay. I also had asked for rooms on the first floor because I have a member of my party who needed ADA room. I was told they don't have ADA rooms and I said I called a week ago and specifically asked for first floor adjoining rooms. Overall don't stay here choose another hotel where they don't treat guests like their crap. The topper was the receptionist asking us to leave the property and not to come back. I ended up canceling my room and not even staying here because of the horrible customer service experience I received the 20 minutes I was there in the property. read more

Well I thought the staff was very nice after being worried about it reading reviews from others. The place was cute and quaint. It was clean and the bathroom was very nicely updated. Although the toilet was for toddlers. So short! No great bathroom amenities, a bar of soap that wouldn't lather and no conditioner -just shampoo. No coffee pot in the room but the TV was very large and nice. Beds were terrible. I mean terrible! Our room had the outdated bedspreads and the kids room next-door had the nice updated linens and comforters. Pillows were good. The floor was wood/laminate? Looked nice and looked clean. The pool is nice and the Jacuzzi is huge. We got eight people in there and could fit 4 more. Things that I thought were strange were they give you a parking pass for your car and they inspect your room before you leave. No pets allowed and they have all non-smoking rooms which makes everything smell fresh. Nice little smoking area with covered patio and chairs and umbrellas. All the vending machines are broken though. Air-conditioning in our room was loud like a jetliner. They do have a washer and dryer available which was nice from coming in from the beach. Probably wouldn't stay here again if they don't update the beds. Again - very very uncomfortable. read more

This was the least expensive hotel in the area. Since just staying one night I went for it I wouldn't stay another night. The pillows feel more like rocks shoved into pillow cases. There is mold in the shower. There is only a tiny 4 by 6 inch shelf in the bathroom to put your travel bag on. No coffee in the room. And the coffee in the lobby is not good. Your typical low budget hotel. I'd highly suggest paying a little extra and staying at the Motel 6 next door. I've been there and it's way better than this place. My room was next to the freeway (loud as hell; I had to turn on the fan to mute the noise) and bed is super springy and uncomfortable. I'd rather bring a sleeping bag+pad and sleep on that instead. The LAW...YES the LAW in California is NO kids under 14 ( 0r 100 lbs) in HOT TUBS...Why? The temperature can cause fatal reactions in bodies under 100 lbs. 6) CRAP MANAGEMENT!!!!! AWFUL!!!! When you try to ask why you are being charged EXTRAS -you are simply DENIED....anything. I have THREE times had to fight with the manager about chargers...and then he realized I was a not the customer he thought I was...and all I got was OOPS...sorry..and defensive behavior! YOU never feel like a "guest"...never. It is a very cheap motel....but you pay HEAVY in many ways. ...the service is AWFUL...the SECURITY NON Existent. I was being harassed while getting ice and called the desk EIGHT times...no one was in attendance. There is a LIABILITY ISSUE...they need to pay attention...these guys are going to get sued..and big time....soon enough. This place used to be a hidden paradise last 3 times I've stayed here in the past 3 months has been nothing but a nightmare, with current renovations getting in the way of a good nights/morning rest I'm going to speak up I'll start here the rooms upstairs have bad plumbing gas rotten smell . We were in town for a youth softball tournament. This motel was reasonably priced. Very close to the little downtown beach strip. The front desk staff was very courteous and even google mapped directions from there to the softball fields for me at check in. They were able to accommodate my early check in request and a handicapped room on the first floor. Grounds were clean as was the pool area. Complimentary coffee bar in the lobby. There is an ice machine and vending machine and little seating area for eating a meal next to the pool. We stayed in room 105. The room was VERY clean and comfortable for two people. Room had a Queen bed, flat screen TV, Free WIFI, a small fridge and a microwave. There are no drawers/closet but there are cubbies in the desk/night tables and a closet rod with hangers. The bathroom was large (it was a handicapped room). There was no tub. The shower is easily accessible for a wheelchair to wheel in/out of if necessary with only a shower curtain. WARNING: There is NO rim/lip around the bottom that would stop water from splashing from under the shower curtain. There is NO bath mat in the bathroom!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND NOT STEPPING ON THE BATHROOM TILE if there is ANY water from the shower!!!!!!!! My daughter had finished showering. I used a smaller towel to wipe up any water that may have splashed under but I didn't see a small drop of water and my feet slipped right out from under me and I ended up on my back! No "major" injury but I did, unfortunately, break a toe. I do recommend this motel..just wear some no-skid socks!!!! read more

Honestly, Motel 6 is right next door and at least has better bedding. I would not recommend this motel. Don't stay here! My gf brought home bedbugs from this nasty place. She had to pay big money to treat her home for the bedbugs she got at sandy land reef inn. Se also had to see a doctor and get medication to help her skin. She is now permanently scared from this infestation. Luckily I walked away with no issues. First of all, Carpinteria is a beautiful, chill little town I highly recommend taking a little time and enjoying it! DO NOT go to this motel If you want to save money, go to the Motel 6 down the street. I was willing to pay a little more to get something better because I brought my girlfriend and I've never been in a motel this dumpy. There is NO Air conditioning, the Freeway is right next to this motel so it's too noisy to keep the window open. The key cards barely work (I got locked out of my room for 10 minutes) The TV is a 1990's 20" tv you can get for free on Craigslist. The hot tub was actually pretty nice as was the shower. This place was frustrating and a little creepy at best. Which is so out of place in such a BEAUTIFUL little beach town. I stay in a lot of cheap motels because they're usually nice enough to crash out in and they have basic necessities and I really don't ask for much. Most two star motels/hotels do the trick for me. THE WHOLE FRONT DESK STAFF has a very IGNORANT leader in the form of the "manager" all he "managed" to do was still my money for an extra night, illegally try to enter my room which is terrifying for a female traveler; and then to cover it he tapped into my reservation  (from his end) cancelled my night but kept my deposit AND BILLED ME FOR THE NIGHT HE CANCELLED!!! Plumbing issues and internet sucks...expect to be "bullied" if you inquire about either... Terrible experience glad it was for work and not a family... Im a strong believer in "You get what you pay for", unfortunately the same weekend i needed a room for my sisters wedding in Carp, santa Barb was also hosting Fiesta Days. Evrything was booked and what was left in carp was sandyland. BIGGEST MISTAKE!! This whole place has a sewage stench that is worse in the small, dark, dingy spaces they call a "room". Oh and it gets worse. THEY HAVE BED BUGS!! ... which I personally was effected by. I should of known better that this place would have bed bugs considering ants were all over the bathroom, the towels were stained, the carpet was so dirty i preferred to wear my sandals over going barefoot and the pillows were yellow and stunk of B.O. Bottom line this place was all kinds of NASTY!! To top it off we experienced the WORST FRONT DESK SERVICE EVER!!!! The Eastern European guy at the front desk is absolutely psychotic and seriously sucks. So in the future do yourself a favor and NEVER STAY here. Oh and if your wondering how much it was to stay at this dump it was $370 for 3 terrible nights not including a $30 deposit for one bedbug ridden queen. The 4-star rating is based on what I was expecting and what I actually was getting. This place is a great alternative to the Motel 6 next door. The rates are better and the bathroom, besides having a nicer decor than expected, has a hair dryer. A big deal if you have long hair. The rooms are a pretty good size and the exterior is rather cute. The staff is a friendly, helpful bunch. This a better than expected 2-star place. my husband and I got a room here ,it seemed fine, until we left for a few hours. When we came back we realized someone had been in our room! When we told the manager at first he acted like he didn't know what we were talking about until we showed him the food trash, then he told us he had mistakenly given the room to someone els.We couldn't sleep the door didn't have a lock.We had to secure the door with a chair! we just left this place & i LOVED it! i was skeptical cause i saw some weird reviews but i enjoyed it so much. the front desk people were super nice & funny, they made everything very simple & easy. the room was modern & clean. it had a nice big tv with cable. bed was comfortable, we brought our own blanks to sleep on because im just weird about using other peoples sheets, but we did check their bedding & it was perfectly clean. the pool and jacuzzi were also really clean. it's less than 5 minutes away from all the best spots. i'll definitely be back again soon! :) read more

A great price and a very nice room. The rooms and furnishings were clean and comfortable. Air conditioning quiet and thermostat-based. The buildings are cute, quiet, and close in to Carpinteria. The staff was friendly and helpful. Basic amenities (no coffeepot, which I don't need anyway) - more than made up for by how clean and pleasant the room was. They have a no smoking no pets policy, so the rooms smell fresh. read more
