Holiday Inn Express in Carpinteria is not a bad place to stay. It's not the Ritz Carlton. But what is it, is a comfortable, clean, and safe hotel that is reasonably priced for the area. It's near the freeway, downtown Carpinteria, beachs, and a suburban shopping plaza with a grocery store ( eateries, Starbucks, fast food). Pros: + Complimentary breakfast. This was quite a spread and the egg and protein hot items rotates. Eggs one day could be a cheesy omelette patty and the next scrambled. The protein was bacon strip, pork sausage or turkey sausage patty. They had a pancake machine, very simple to use, just press a button. There were cinnamon rolls, bagels, bread slices, muffins, three cereal offerings, yogurt, and fruit (bananas, oranges). Coffee, tea, juices, milk, and even had almond milk. The women working the breakfast were amazing. Cheerful and helpful, adding to a great start to the day. They were taking care to refill hot food trays and tidying the area. + Outdoor swimming pool and hot tub. + Fitness center. + Free WiFi. + Free lending library in the lobby. + Complimentary 24/7 coffee and tea station in the lobby. Other: - They leave a printout of your receipt on the floor outside your door the early morning before checkout. I'm not a fan of this practice. Because we all know, people are noisy. I asked mine to be left at the desk. - The sole elevator is super small. Barely large enough for the bellhop cart and one person. - One of the two washing machines, in the guests laundry facility, was broken during our visit. - Not enough USB ports, for my liking, in the room. - The room's mini fridge temp was on the fritz. I love this hotel. It feels like a home away from home. When I travel to Santa Barbara from Los Angeles, I almost always stay at this hotel. The staff is the biggest reason. They go out of their way to take care of their guests. I had a small but special request, and Gilbert made it happen! Sabrina is also very helpful and friendly. The rooms are comfortable. Each room has a bathtub, which is you prefer a bath is nice to have. It's so hard to find rooms with bathtubs anymore. One tip, stay on the 2nd floor, as the noise on the 1st floor is much louder with people overhead. For those who care, the hotel has a nice swimming pool and a full complimentary breakfast! read more

Booked a last minute trip to Santa Barbara on Jan 14 and we wanted to take our dog with us. I decided to use my points to cover the stay and pet fee was only $20. Location was perfect not too far from Santa Barbara, complimentary breakfast, coffee and tea in the lounge, but the best part was the free Tesla charging. We informed them ahead of time we were bringing a pet and they gave us a room close to the side entrance so taking our dog out to potty was super convenient. We had a great stay at this location. We travel with our dogs and this location has lots of grass areas to walk them around. The room and dining area were very clean. The pancake machine was not working. Having a small fridge and microwave in the room was also a plus. If you are a light sleeper ask for a room on the opposite side from the freeway. If you get a room on the freeway side it is right next to it so you hear all the cars and semis throughout the night. Staff were great. First off they gave me the wrong room , my reservation was for a king and they put me in a 2 queen room. Said some BS as to why they did it to begin with and eventually gave me the right room. WE go inside the NEW room and it smells terrible of mold and mildew, they have the window open airing it out. the sinks clogged and we had to call again for someone to fix it. at night as we sleep we hear water leaking inside the wall dripping down. i wont be going here again. read more

I've stayed at this hotel 2 times now and have come to the conclusion that I would not want to stay here again. It's not bad, but it's not great either. The good: room was clean, location is relatively close to the beach, and AC can cool the room quite a bit! The bad: towels and bed sheets feel a bit rough, pillows are not the comfiest, the free breakfast is weak (pancake mixer was broken and there were not a lot of options), and they leave the invoice for your stay outside your door (I feel uncomfortable having my name and info ready for anyone to easily snatch it up). Had an overall pleasant stay here on a busy Saturday night for a wedding nearby. Pros: had called ahead to add my friend's name to the room and request an early check-in and both notes were in the system. I got a double room, 145 which was to the left of the lobby and on the quieter side away from the freeway. The room was bigger than the usual and included a refrigerator and microwave which was great! There was also a little seating area with a couch and coffee table. The beds were also very comfortable. I compared this room with my friends' at 115 and this side is brighter in the afternoons. Cons: the bathroom had a musty smell to it, like some weed smoke had drifted in from another room? And we heard some people talking loudly down the hall for hours, that woke me up. Otherwise it was nice that there were multiple entrances so you could park your car closer to your room. I didn't get to try the free continental breakfast, but it's nice that it was offered. read more

1 star "Management Lied About Bed Bug Incident 'Overblown Complaint' and Zero Accountability" If I could give zero stars, I would. My family and I stayed at this Holiday Inn Express (Carpinteria, CA) from May 4-7, 2025 while attending a family funeral. I was one of several family members staying in six rooms at this hotel. Based on my experience, none of us will ever stay at a Holiday Inn Express again. On the night of May 6, I discovered a live bed bug inside extra linens stored in the closet of my room (Room 161). I captured the bug in a sealed bag and immediately notified staff. Rather than taking appropriate health precautions, they handed me clean sheets and told me to change the bed myself. I was later moved across the hall, but no one inspected the original room, documented the incident, or followed up with me that evening. The next morning, I asked the front desk at 9:00 AM about the report, and they had no idea what I was referring to. I was told the manager, D. Michael Ensign, would arrive at 11:00. By the time I checked out at 12:00 PM, still no follow-up. When I spoke with Mr. Ensign directly, he told me: *The room had already been inspected (false); *The bug I turned in had been "misplaced"; *My request for video evidence of any inspection was "ridiculous"; *And my concern sounded "premeditated." In a later email, he added: "Certainly, this small creature should not have elicited the extreme reaction and demands of Amanda..." "This situation is not that." "Any further attempts at compensation in any form for this overblown complaint will be denied." He also implied the bug was a spider which is laughable. A bed bug and a spider are two entirely different specimens: one is an insect with six legs, the other an arachnid with eight, and they look nothing alike. I know what I saw, and I would never raise this kind of concern lightly especially not while grieving. Even more troubling: *He contradicted himself by saying the room was inspected on May 7, but later emailed me stating it occurred on May 9, after we checked out. *He admitted the pull-out couch was never inspected. *I was never provided with any pest control report, staff policy, or even a basic acknowledgment of wrongdoing. I've since filed formal complaints with: * IHG Corporate * Santa Barbara County Environmental Health * California Department of Public Health This was not just bad service. It was unethical, dishonest, and a health hazard that management tried to downplay and deflect. I was belittled, gaslit, and accused of dishonesty, all for doing the responsible thing. If you care at all about safety, accountability, or basic human decency avoid this hotel and avoid this brand. read more

The hotel is actually beautiful, but I don't think I would stay here again. For some reason they gave us a suite with the roll in shower (for handicapped?) We didn't like the fact that the bottom of the shower was even with the floor...it got quite messy. The water pressure wasn't good and there was no working exhaust fan in the bathroom. When taking a hot shower, it felt like a sauna. I think that would be good in cold weather, but this is warm weather and it was quite suffocating. The toilet paper was like cheap gas station, toilet paper. The toilet seat isn't soft close (which we have at home) and when I closed it , it slammed down on my knee and scraped it pretty good. The bed was ok but not that comfortable. We only stayed for one night so it was tolerable. The best thing about our stay was the staff and they were all very nice! read more

I was able to make a reservation only 1 week before Labor Day weekend. I was actually really impressed with that because I was notified at the last minute that I would have Labor Day off. We stayed in room 203 which was at the very south end of the hotel. It was a two queen beds room since I was staying with my teen son. The room was clean but smelled a bit musky every time we entered it. The beds were comfortable and I like that you are given several pillows that have "firm" or "soft" embroidered on the pillow cases. The AC worked nicely even with the weather being in the low 70s, ac is still needed on the second floor. I was happy to see we had a mini fridge and a microwave which we used both during our stay. However there was only one usb plug all the way across the room on the desk. And the lamp outlet on the bedside table was lose and wild not hold the plug. So I feel they are a little outdated there. It doesn't cost much to provide your guests with a charging unit with usb plugs. Considering most technology runs off usb now. The continental breakfast was okay. The eggs were pretty gross and obviously watered down with milk. The 2nd day they offered a "cheese omelette" but the cheese is imitation and disgusting. I took one bite and tossed it. The pork sausages tasted as though they were microwaved so they were tough and dried out. The cinnamon rolls are probably the best thing there. I was impressed that they tried to maintain social distancing in the food stations and during my first two mornings there, it was fine because I went before 8 am. However today I went at 8:00am on a holiday (Labor Day) and the breakfast room was packed. No open tables and people were crowding into the food stations and completely ignoring the signs saying "one person at a time in the stations". Another issue was when I first arrived there was a man named Eric checking in guests. The guest in front of me was being checked in by a female clerk but she asked Eric why he was not wearing his mask. (There is a mask order for all indoors right now in Carpinteria). He ignored her. She asked to speak with a manager. A female manager asked him to put on the mask. He ignored her and then she was more firm telling him to put it on now. He then put it on. This should not have even happened. I had received a letter waiting in my room explaining the hotels mask policy yet they were allowing their employee to disregard their mask policy so it made it seem like they didn't even mean what they say. A guest should not have had to ask for manager about it. The other staff members were wearing masks. The only other complaint I have was the first night the room Next door must have had a party at 2 am because there were several adult voices laughing and being loud. And on my last night there, I was woken up to someone yelling in the hallway. This hotel is in a great location. Walking distance to Albertson's, CVS and several restaurants. read more

Been staying at this hotel for quite some different times already, Always clean and very welcoming and friendly staff, the cleaning ladies are very attentive and they work hard to keep my room clean. But since I work nights , they accommodate their cleaning schedule to clean my room as priority. food is always warm and fresh, the breakfast ladies are very friendly and always ready to help at the restaurant. I would give it the maximum rate, but their internet access is quite bad, the signal isn't strong enough and at the opposite sides of the hotel , the signal doesn't reach the rooms. read more

We stayed here for 2 nights (Sunday-Tuesday). The rooms were nice, and - true to Holiday Inn Express and Suites - they had the dove products that I love. The 2 queen bed room was comfortable, however my two complaints are: the musty smell that seems to be a staple of all the Holiday Inn Express & Suites that I've been to, as well as the fact that the side entrances did not require a badge-in until the hours of 11pm-5am. Seemed a little unsafe to me. But I would definitely choose this hotel again the next time I want to be in the Santa Barbara Area. read more

I wanted to like my stay here and was excited about because we came to celebrate a family member's birthday. Sadly, this hotel and its staff were disappointing. We arrived at 3:30pm (check in time is at 3pm) and only one of our 4 rooms was ready. They had told me that we could not do early check in but once we got there, they stated they gave our rooms away to people who had shown up early. So we waited over an hour until the other 3 rooms were cleaned. Then, when we tried to get into one of them, the key would not work. We went up and down the stairs three times and each time, the key wouldn't work. Turns out that room was already occupied and they didn't know? So they gave us another room finally. By the time we actually got settled in, it was past 5pm. They didn't offer any concessions or a longer check to offset any of this either. Most of the front desk staff were not wearing masks, even though it says clearly upon entry that everyone has to. They didn't seem to at interested in bettering our stay once there so many problems either. The hotel and breakfast was fine, but again, their wait staff was not wearing masks while loading up the food. Was not happy about that at all. The rooms were a good size but the bedding was super thin. Not the quality I'm used to with a Holiday Inn. Overall, the rooms were fine but the stay was just too much trouble and we wouldn't come here again. read more

Holiday Inn Carpinteria We had an excellent stay! After having a rough experience at the Holiday Inn in Big Bear last week, it was such a relief to be able to get some rest at this location. The reception staff was very friendly and welcoming. Aaron was very helpful too! The surroundings were clean and we appreciated the sanitizers that were placed all over the building. We stayed in Room 223, which looked and smelled clean the moment we stepped in. Being germaphobes that my husband and I are, we started wiping down surfaces, and were truly impressed that almost everything was clean! How did we know? The disinfecting wipes didn't catch any dirt for the most part. The room was spacious for a family of three (we got the "King Executive" suite). We loved that there was a small reception area, which kept the bed even further away from the door. The bathroom was clean and the water pressure was great! My favorite part was the J.R. Watkins shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. It reminded me of the Holiday Inn in Old Town Scottsdale! Most importantly, we had a good night's rest because of the comfortable bed and pillows. The noise was very minimal but it could also be due to us being away from the elevators and exit doors. I want to point out two things that might bother some people: there was a yellow stain on one of the walls close to the connecting room. The tub also had a leaky faucet but it wasn't bothersome. Although we're germaphobes (mostly because of our daughter), those things didn't bother us at all. As mentioned earlier, we had a great stay and will definitely stay again when we're around the area. read more

I would totally stay here again, the start was slow, we had a big group and the rooms were not ready for a few hours. The staff was apologetic and made it up to us so that softened the wait. They are accommodating to dog owners and the rooms were very clean. It was a great price, location and they had good service. Our family had a great time here, we spent more time here than expected due to the rainy weather. PS patrons take that complimentary breakfast here seriously lol so get there at least an hour before it closes so you can get a quick bite without too much of a crowd. This is the second Holiday Inn Express we have stayed at on this vacation. They are not really worthy of the IHG brand. At this one, the 101 freeway runs directly behind the hotel, so you DO not want a room on the back side (so forget the mountain views, because the highway is between you & the mountains). We got a first floor room on the front (street) side which was ok, so do choose an odd numbered room. When we checked in, one lamp did not light (the one between the beds) and two others had at least one burned out bulb. The young man from building maintenance was pleasant enough & he brought us a replacement lamp. We tried to spend an afternoon at the pool, but it was being serviced. They had skipped our room for housekeeping, so we had to go find the housekeeping manager and request that they loop back to catch us, so we were waiting outside until that was done. Eventually, they put up a sign saying pool closed for an hour for maintenance, but we sat out there for three hours and the pool was still not available. Breakfast is ok, except that they accept large groups and don't manage the traffic, so two mornings, there were 40+ college students crowding the breakfast room. I just tried to go down to the "Business Center" to print boarding passes. It is 5 pm & there is total chaos at the desk. A lady who just arrived was sent to a room that was not clean, and the folks at the desk did not know which rooms are clean and which are not. I used the computer to access boarding passes and followed the print instructions to print them to the local (Brother) printer. I signed out and went to the desk to pay for them with my IHG Platinum card, but they said they don't print unless you send it through their email (which is not posted & they had not given me). I should not have to send my private documents through some random gmail. The housekeeping staff are pleasant, and I don't fault them. Management needs a refresher course about giving patrons notice about what is going on. read more

Carpenteria is a sweet beach town with the friendliest people. We stayed here at the holiday inn and have no complaints. The staff was amazing, our rooms were clean/comfortable and just the vibe of the place was welcoming. Being that carpenteria is a small town, there are lots of small mom and pop shops and local restaurants to support and enjoy. The real reason for this review, however, is to give a big shout out to GERBERTA. She is the friendly support staff who runs the breakfast room in the morning. Her Filipino hospitality and kindness radiated throughout the room. She was so generous not only with her time, but with her ability to welcome anyone who walked through the door. She gave a little extra of what faire was being offered that morning. She also packed little snack bags for us to take for the day. Truly a beautiful soul inside and out. We love everything about this Holiday Inn. Convenient parking, proximity to downtown and the beach, nice staff and clean modern rooms. Even though you are next to the Highway it is fairly quiet. The pool and jacuzzi are always clean and well kept. You are only 15 minutes away from Santa Barbara and about an hour from the Santa Ynez wine country. With the crazy high Santa Barbara lodging prices these days, this hotel is a bargain and quiet respite from the tourist mania. read more

Given it is the peak of summer, these rates were way cheaper than staying in Santa Barbara and is only a quick drive away. The room we stayed in was spacious and clean. Not a lot of working power outlets, no usb plug-ins, and a leaky faucet and loose fixtures in the bathroom. But overall it was clean, convenient and fair for the price. I can't even explain the gratitude we feel for the customer service we received from Christina! We decided to extend our vacation by a day and booked this hotel last minute for the night. We checked in late and left early the next morning. Because we left so early we failed to do our usual walk through, and we left our daughters stuffed animal at the hotel. :( We called and spoke to Christina who told us they had her stuffed animal. Not only did Christina ship it back to us for free, but she went absolutely above and beyond for our daughter. She shipped it back with extra goodies and the cutest note. Christina didn't have to put the extra effort in, but she did, without even meeting us at all. I want to express how truly amazing this selfless act was and how much we appreciate her kindness. The carpets and floors were dirty; the bed linen was so old that my wife and I had a hard time sleeping because the cotton was rolled up and itchy; The mattress is 10 years old and has lost all its shape; One of the light bulbs was burned out and I went to the front desk to get a new one and the front desk clerk was on a phone call for over 30 minutes before he decided to find another employee to help me and that employee only took my room and said someone would bring a bulb to our room in an hour or so. The front desk staff definitely needs customer service training. The lady who ran the breakfast area on Saturday and Sunday is a Superstar. Great budget-friendly hotel that is a close 15-minute drive to Downtown Santa Barbara. Clean and modern, one of the better 2.5-star hotels I have stayed in. This is a great option if you want to visit Santa Barbara but don't want to pay the SB price. It also has the unique value proposition of being near Carpinteria State Beach; you're only a 10-minute walk away from a scenic hike/beach area so you don't have to rely only on driving far to the Santa Barbara beaches. Free parking and wifi, but the wifi never worked while I was there. I took off a star for no working internet in the actual hotel room, and spotty at best when you're in the common area downstairs. I loved the free hot breakfast, especially the cinnamon rolls. It is located between the main road and the freeway, so I recommend requesting a quiet room, which I did, and also asking for free earplugs from the front desk. read more

We dropped a child off at college and stayed here. We had issues with the room. My wife found a form letter on the desk from the manager discussing customer service etc. I emailed the manager and outlined my concerns. I didn't expect anything further. Within 2 hours he responded, and resolved our dispute in a generous and good faith manner.
