    Gongura Vankaya Koora - eggplant

Excellent late lunch... we shared a podi uthappam and gongura vankaya koora (eggplant). Hubby also enjoyed a mango lassi! Great place and always surprised it's not more busy. Only wish they had a menu with descriptions.... Since we gave no clue what things are always called we had to do a lot of searching... Hidden gems... in the past gave enjoyed the thali special and hubby had a garlic curry he thought amazing... so worth figuring it out!

This restaurant I assume is Tamil because I ordered a Chennai set dosa and vada curry. Despite seeing a range of appealing menu options, including a mouthwatering channa bhatura ordered by the next table over, I thought I'd try something new for me. This dish is a spread of spongy lentil-based pancakes with a curry of what seems like a reuse of last night's leftover lentil fritters (a common culinary conceit to get the best use out of things). The curry was strongly flavored, and the spongy texture worked great as a dipper. It was an interesting dish, but a wide South Indian menu of lentil-based delicacies tested my resolve as I always want to try all of them. A cutting chai was a nice way to wash things down. Perhaps more notable was the fact that while this place was like a lot of suburban strip mall spots in terms of ambiance, it had better service than other such restaurants I've been to. They took care to make sure that my large bowl of curry didn't spill as it was close to tipping over. For those uninitiated in the wonders of South Indian cuisine, they seemed willing to take the time to explain the menu. My guess is that you could probably just point to a random line on the menu, though, and even if you can't pronounce what's there you'd be okay ordering it.

My wife and I heard amazing things about this restaurant located in Herndon and had to give it a try. We ordered hot and sour soups, gobi (cauliflower) Manchurian, onion/chili dosa, masala chai, mirchi bhaji, mango lassi and karaam masala dosa. The food and service was excellent. We had an opportunity to speak with Raj (one of the owners) and he was so welcoming and kind. Highly recommend to anyone who loves South Indian fare!

I find it unfortunate that the Indian food in Herndon continues to disappoint me, given the density of Indian diaspora in the surrounding area. While you might be led to presume that the local culinary scene is exceptional, given anticipated competition, it is sadly not the case; particularly so when it comes to this restaurant. The service is quite slow and our server forgot to bring the drinks we had ordered throughout the entirety of the meal. After we reminded him that we had not received the drinks and that we would like for them to be removed from the receipt if we do not have them did he proceed to bring out the coffee; which, mind you, did not meet our expectations at all. The food itself was mediocre and incredibly oily. All In all, I wish them luck but I do not think I will be returning anytime soon. For those who crave a traditional South Indian vegetarian experience, this may be an option.

Service was great. They were extremely happy to answer several questions I had about dishes on the menu. The wait times were lengthy. However, this was not in waste, as the food was good. They have plenty of South Indian options, aside from an array of different dosas (note they have kid friendly options as well) Portion sizes were also amazing and price was very very good, especially for 2024 (8.99 for large entree). Also note food is not prepared with onion or garlic (saatvik food).

Some dishes we ordered were excellently prepared and served in good quantity compared to the price. Keera Vadai, Cone Dosai, Bisi-Belle bath and Samosa were well made. The number of servers were insufficient to cater to the crowd on a Saturday afternoon and being a newer establishment we can understand. Ambience could have been better. Overall we will visit again and order only the south Indian specials only.

To start with, they have a dedicated Jain Menu so we picked this place for some of the family members who can't eat onion and garlic. However, when we drove an hour plus to get here, they stated they're so "busy" that they may not be able to take any "Jain" orders. Well "busy" to them means less than 30% of the seating because the place was more than half empty. They stated after our questioning that they will try to get Jain orders for us so we all set down (group of 10+). Again, the place was mostly empty and had many tables that were already setup with napkins, forks, spoons, and glass cups. But when we set down, we had none of it. The waiter came and asked us if we were okay with plastic cups since glass ones will take more time as they don't have many right now. Again, they had more than enough on all other empty tables. Afterwards placing our order, we received may be 6 spoons and 6 forks and 2 napkins for 10+ of us. It almost seemed they didn't want us to be there. At least that's the vibe I got from all these things that kept happening. Another issues was that right where my wife was sitting, the ac kept dripping water from the ceiling. And while we were eating they were right next to us trying to get something out of some wooden box or working on some set of furniture. This could have waited until after we were done with our meals. Or at least they could have been courteous enough and just let us know that they had to work on something and will be making noises. To the end, lastly on the food, it was nothing too special to talk about. We did get a bowl of Rasam with a long piece of hair that my daughter caught and was disgusted with. The hair alone makes this a one star review. We came to this location for the first time since we had great experiences at the NJ location, but my experience was bad enough that I wouldn't even come back here.

Idli come with an array of chutneys and sambar by default, but in this case I had trouble even using those because the flavor starts out so strong. My chickpeas and okra were also delicious, if on the indulgent side. Getting manchow soup to go turned out not to be a great decision, as the crispy noodles had become soggy by the time I got around to unpacking my soup. Overall, high on salt and oil, but a diverse and interesting set of tastes.
