Tucked away in tiny strip center between a Greek sandwich shop and a liquor store, this little donut shop is a gem. On my drive to work the neon signs glowing "Open" and "Donuts" were tempting enough. But then the sign glowing "Sausage" was even more intriguing. Could it be? Had my search for a kolache in Atlanta finally come to fruition?? Finally, after months of driving by each morning convincing myself I didn't need a donut or didn't have time to stop, I took a quick u-turn at the light and parked outside the shop. I knew it was going to be good the minute I stepped out of the car and smelled a yeasty sweet smell beckoning me inside. Inside the shop is small, only a few tables, and they do have a limited selection of donuts, but they all looked good. Maple glazed, chocolate covered, sour cream cake, iced with sprinkles, etc. And then- I saw it. There, on the top shelf- A Kolache!! I immediately ordered one from the little woman behind the counter. She promptly put it in the microwave for a few seconds while packing up the rest of my order. I got a red velvet cake donut, a regular glazed, a kolache, and they threw in a free donut hole. I also got some coffee. The coffee was very good, not too strong, and they had fresh half & half in the fridge. The minute I got in the car, I took out my kolache. The moment had finally arrived. I took a bite, suddenly transported back in time to my childhood sitting in the car with my mom eating a giant kolache from Shipley's Donuts. Ahh, amazing. Although a bit smaller than the ones of my childhood, as I consumed it in exactly three bites, still delicious. As for the donuts- awesome. Homemade, just enough glazing, oh so yummy. Thanks to a recent craving for donuts after seeing a friend's instagram photo, I have been on the hunt for the perfect donut in Atlanta. And to begin that process, I've been Yelping donut shops around the area, and Sara's Donuts kept coming up. The extremely annoying thing is that Sara's is only open from 5am-noon everyday, which makes it difficult for a working professional to make it before it closes. However, me and a friend finally woke up a bit earlier and stopped by Sara's before church on Sunday. It was fun, so we might make it a once a month thing. RED VELVET DONUT This donut is perfection. The outside is perfectly crisp and the inside is nice and moist. As an aging Asian, I've been finding that I hate desserts that are too sweet, so I was pleasantly surprised by how this donut wasn't too sweet. This is my favorite one that I tried thus far. RASPBERRY FILLED DONUT The donut itself is very fresh, and the jam filling is done by this very interesting filling funnel machine behind the counter. The jam was so delicious, that we licked the jam off the paper bag that the donut came in. Makes me want to try the other filled donuts. APPLE FRITTER DONUT I'm pretty much a sucker for anything with cinnamon and apples, so I knew for sure I wanted to try the apple fritter. But unfortunately, this turned out to be waaayy too sweet for my liking, so it was actually pretty painful to finish my half of it. Don't get me wrong, it was exactly the flavor I expected it to taste like, but I probably won't get it again just because it was too sweet. ATMOSPHERE The shop is very humble and small, and have about 10 seats or less in the store on the right wall. The refrigerators and coffee are located on the left, and the main counter with the donuts and cashier are in the front. The decor is pretty lackluster, but that doesn't matter, because you're here for the fresh donuts. Next time, I want to try the sour cream donut and chocolate glazed. But I think I pretty much can only eat 1-1.5 donuts before I get full. Overall, I'd say if you like pretty traditional flavors of donuts, this is the place to go. However, if you're looking for fun and innovative flavors, you're pretty much only going to find the Red Velvet. read more

Donuts are delicious but so oily they will give you the shits in a few minutes after eating. Be near a bathroom and don't eat if you are stuck in traffic! I gave one to my husband as he was headed out of the door to work. He called to say he barely made it to Quick trip to use the bathroom. He had to pull off the highway! OK reality check here is needed! Ariel R. apparently is the only one with a taste bud and the will to be honest! To be fair I would bump her rating up to a 2 Star but absolutely no more! Donuts were as Ariel stated just a run of the mill average grocery store quality but at least it hasn't been sitting on the shelf for a week (which reflects my 2* rating)! There is also a Sarah Donuts and it uses the same recipes as Sara Donuts (sisters)! I'm sorry but I would pass on this one in the future! $3 min on Credit cards, no big deal! Amazing fresh donuts with fast and friendly service. Store is clean and in my experience the coffee is fresh. The traditional glazed donuts are melt in your mouth soft and the cake donuts are a tough thicker consistency but are still moist and fresh tasting. Nothing in the area beats it! read more

A donut's donut. There was a period in my life where donuts were my all time favorite food. Yeast, cake, jelly filled, maple bar. You name it, chances are, I've eaten it. But these donuts. Oh man. These donuts are quite simply perfection. If you're a YEASTy BOI, you'll love their raised donuts. They are so delightfully light, it's like you're biting into a sweet cloud. How have I not tried this place since it is around the corner from my house?!? I have heard from several that their donuts are awesome! I came in one morning and picked up a sausage roll for my husband and he said it was salty and I agreed. But the donuts on the other hand are light, fluffy and delicious!! I only had a bite of the glazed bc they are my daughter's fave! I'll have to try some other flavors next time. I came around 9-9:30 both times and they still had a good assortment. I'll def have to try the red velvet next time. Also, their prices are cheaper than Dunkin. For example 1/2 dz at DD is $6.99 whereas, at Sara they were a little over $5 for all glazed. I live for donuts and love original glazed. These donut holes ($1.99/dozen) are so fresh that I can't help but to stop by before my commute to work, which is really starting to up my sugar intake... but SO yummy. Located in the plaza next to BP on 141. There is a ton of parking spots in front of the store. The interior might look like it needs an upgrade, but don't let that deter you. It's home-y. Definitely do not be discouraged about this location as it may seem like a small rundown shop but the doughnuts are absolutely to die for!! Coming in at 8 AM on a Saturday, there was a line to get these delicious doughnuts. I got a red velvet cake, blueberry cake, Bavarian cream, eclair, sour cream, and a strawberry frosted doughnut. All of these doughnuts are delicious as the frostings on them and the glazes were well distributed and didn't over power the entire doughnut. As for the doughnut itself, the inside was super moist and fluffy so that you could eat it and totally enjoy it. Price wise, I spent less than six dollars for seven doughnuts. Every time I think if donuts, I think of Sara Donut's red velvet cake donut. The donut shop, which opens ridiculously early and closes before I tend to get out of bed, will forever hold a place in my heart. It's a staple that caters to locals and especially the nearby Johns Creek High School. I don't think they're ever slow because there's always been a steady inflow of people each time I've been in, which is too many times. Sara Doughnuts are the best I have had hands down. They are light and fluffy. They almost melt in your mouth. I don't like to go elsewhere cause I'm always disappointed. I am saddened by all the 4 and 5 star reviews. I agree with James S. about how we distribute our stars. The place does have donuts and coffee check so I guess that makes it a donut shop. Relocating to the suburbs from Fort lauderdale and living prior to that in Downtown Atlanta I am finding the lack of food quality is really limited and what passes as amazing out here really is mediocre. Yes these donuts are better then the grocery store shelf but a far far cry from Sublime, Ducks Cosmic Kitchen or Star Provisions. I am not saying don't go to this place, I am even saying support this place for donuts, but do not make me or anyone else think it is anything but a very small step above a Dunkin Donut. I think we should support our locally owned eateries, but I have said it before I think our locally owned eateries also need to be aware our dollars need to be earned, service with a smile, if your not busy why rush me in and out, and if I have a question regarding an item I am asking it because I don't know not because I want to frustrate you and waste your time. The best donuts in town. Everything they have is so fresh. Staff are always friendly, even at 5:30 am. You better get there early because they go fast. The red velvet donuts are wonderful! I often stop on the way to work to pick up sausage rolls (a favorite at work). I've learned that if I need a large amount, it may be better to call the day before to make certain I have enough with my name on them! It was 3 am and I was having some serious insomnia issues thanks to a pile of work that was awaiting me at the office. Instead of being the last of my team showing up to start the day, I decided that I will open the building up and show that every now and then, my mental state will show some sort of initiative. I got my shower, brushed my teeth, and headed out to work. I usually make my own breakfast but figured I would pick something up along the way, not thinking that nothing I wanted was open at 5:00 in the morning. Then I passed Sara's Donuts. The sign said "Open", and another glowing neon sign read "Sausage Rolls" which looked to be a perfect fit for what I was looking for. I ordered one along with a large coffee. I'm not a donut person, so I can't speak to the quality of theirs, but I am an expert in savory breakfast fare. The long and short of it is that the sausage roll sign should have been labeled "Overly-Salted Hot Dog Wrapped in Dough". One bite was all I needed to know that a second bite wouldn't occur. Initially, I thought it would be funny to take the remainder of the breakfast dog and hide it in a co-worker's file cabinet or desk drawer to have them figure out where the smell was coming from a few days later, but even I couldn't be that mean. Medlock Bridge Road now has a salty remnant lying upon it which may come in handy should another February ice storm hit the city. read more

AN OG FOR AN OG! I do believe that this Sara's Donuts is owned by the same family that owns Sara's Donuts in Suwanee. This means you can expect a quality donut and great service at an awesome price. I have past this location for many years but it is awkwardly located and easily approached if you are traveling south on Medlock. I happened to be on the other side of the strip mall so I thought that today would be the perfect time to check them out. I drove around and saw that the sign on the door indicated that they close at noon, it was 11:55. As I entered, I was greeted warmly by the employee and quickly placed my standard order of plain glazed donuts, (2 donuts and 2 twists). The OG, (original glazed) is my first love and I will never stray. I will look at other donuts but I'm leaving with the OG! Even as a child, I did not like decorated donuts, nor did I like my donut touching decorated donuts. I just believe that a donut should taste like a donut, not an orea or a piece of bacon. For those who believe the same, this place is for you. My donuts tasted light, fresh and delicious as expected. So glad to be able to share with my son otherwise it would have been a blood bath! Yum. I happened to stop in to bring some donuts to a client - I like to support local businesses. I have to say that Donuts are my kryptonite. I can not be around donuts and not eat one, so of course I got one for myself. The owner also threw in some donut holes for free. I got a half dozen assorted donuts and loved all of them. The donuts are a mixture of cake and yeast, so no matter your preference there should be something to satisfy your craving. I called at 8:30 AM and put in an order for a pick up at 9:30 AM after reading people's reviews saying they run out of variety quickly. I ordered 2.5 dozen donuts for a work event and an apple fritter and cinnamon roll for myself. The donuts are affordable! 2.5 dozen plus the roll and fritter totaled $27! That's even cheaper than sublime donuts! Each donut had its own unique flavor which is a nice contrast to chain donut shops where often all the flavors taste the same, all just sugar. The fritter and the red velvet donut are the stars here. Both of these treats are so fantastic that I would come again for just those. The fritter was nice and crispy on the outside without being overdone (a challenge at most places to balance this) and the red velvet donut tasted like red velvet cake. I can't wait to come back and try more. I wish they had custom hand crafted coffees, too. These donuts would pair perfectly with a nice strong americano. read more

Finally made it to Sara Doughnuts! I've been meaning to try this place out since we moved into the area. I love doughnuts but I'm picky. To start these aren't my favorite style of doughnuts but I can see why people like this place. Personally I don't like overly sweet doughnuts with lots of sugar and sweetness. I like a nice balance and my favorite doughnut place in Davinci's Donuts in Alpharetta (Salted Caramel!). This place is not like Davinci's and I would say is more in the style of Dunkin' Donuts than Krispy Kreme, but better than Dunkin. They have a large variety of cake doughnuts and a couple raised doughnuts, sausage rolls, apple fritters, cinnamon rolls, and a few other types. They aren't overly overly sweet with tons of sugar but they are surely riding the line and still too sweet for me. Currently being pregnant I felt like I just went through another GD test after 3 doughnuts. Again, I don't think they are as sweet as a Krispy Kreme or some other Mom and Pop places I've been too. Red Velvet - soft cake doughnut, glazed with sugar everywhere but the bottom, very slightly crisp on the outside and soft and almost undercooked parts of the inside. I believe this is their signature doughnut and is one of the better if not best one I tried. Devil's Food - Very similar to the above but no undercooked feeling, I really like this one but I could have had it less sweet for my taste. Sour cream - Very different than any sour cream doughnut I've had and I would say maybe the least likely one I would get again. It's a cake doughnut but completely crispy, no softness. Maybe if I'm in the right mood but its also a lot of sugar for such a small doughnut. It's not bad just not what I wanted. Cinnamon Cake - Nothing special but a nice standard feeling doughnut. Soft cake doughnut with sugar and cinnamon on the outside. Not overly sweet, very simple. Apple Fritter - This was my favorite out of everything I got this morning. I love Apple Fritters! This one was different than any apple fritter I've had before. It wasn't as soft and moist, it was a bit thinner than the average and had more of a crispiness than I'm use to with glaze only on the top. I would have liked a little more apple taste but other than that this was my favorite of the morning. Next time I would like to try the sausage rolls and maybe the cinnamon roll. read more

Located next to a gas station in a Kroger shopping center, this place can be a little hard to get to depending upon your direction of travel but it's well worth the trouble. All of their products are great. My favorite are the red velvet doughnut and the sausage rolls; which are overgrown pigs-in-a-blanket.
