Called to inquire if they do work on scrub shirts, explained what I needed done, since everyone knows what scrubs are and what material they are made of. Explained in detail that I needed the shirt shortened and the sides adjusted cause it makes me look like a tulip. Met with a very rude lady on the phone who demanded me to bring it in the store so she can look at it before she can answer any of my questions. I then offered to send her pictures in lieu of coming in because I am not from the area and the drive is quite long. Then I had asked how long the "work" usually takes, out of curiosity and then she said very loudly again that she needs to look at it before giving me a solid answer. I was just calling to simply ask for estimates not for an actual price that she would charge me. I'm not from the area and was thinking of driving up to Davis for the service but now I'm not going to, since the lady's attitude was very negative and condescending, even as a first impression. read more

I walked in on a Monday with five pairs of pants that needed to be hemmed and asked if she could have one pair of pants ready by Thursday. I received a text from Sarah that Wednesday, informing me that all of my pants were hemmed and ready for pick up. I was really amazed that she was able to complete the job so quickly. Bad attitude and unreasonably high price. I went there yesterday to dry clean my dress. The lady said it would be $19, but then after I left she called saying they need to charge $20 more because there was too much stain, so $39 in total. I thought it was too much and said the stain shouldn't be hard to wash off. Then the lady said "YOU WASH IT YOURSELF, I'M NOT DOING IT" in an obviously annoyed and impatient tone. I have never experienced this bad service before and wouldn't recommend anyone to visit the store unless you don't mind bad customer service. read more

We have used Sarah's services for years and after trying many other cleaners and alteration services they are the best. They repair small holes, buttons etc without charging, text me to remind of pickup or closures and have many times found credit cards or cash and called us immediately. The work is superb. When I was injured Sarah would insist on carrying my clothes to my car. She knows my whole family by name and gives my daughter small gifts when she comes in. Hahahaha, no. Just no. I come in here to get an alteration on a pair of jeans. First she charged me a ridiculous amount at 15 dollars. Then she proceeded to measure me, as she was measuring I felt something was a bit off because she was really quick and did not take any notice to potential mistakes but I let her proceed anyways. 3 days pass... I come back to pick up my jeans, the cut is completely messed up, there is no break. She ruined a pair of designer jeans. Word of advice: Thinking about getting Jeans hemmed here? DON'T. I really think it was my fault to have Han work on a jacket that, quite frankly he may not have the skill for. Great for dry-cleaning and alterations! As someone who is very clothing conscious, I tend to buy a lot of old luxury consignment pieces since I know they will last a long time. More often than not, the clothes are either too large in certain places or are too long and need to be hemmed. Every time, I've gone to Sarah and she's done a spectacular job on the clothes I bring in! Sure, it may be pricy, but this is manual labor, working with someone else's clothing items, resewing zippers on, etc. This is a craft that not many people do now a days (or at least a good job), so I have given my full trust in Sarah. I could definitely see why there are three dollar signs. I was recently in a wedding and needed my bride's maid's dress altered. All seven of us girls needed our dress altered. It came in one stock size & all of us were different shapes, sizes, & heights. I came to Sarah's because my visit prior was more than great. I came in with a very optimistic view & price. I assumed that since my prior visit was to get a dress shortened as well, it'd be the same or similar experience. I was definitely wrong. There was just one upset after another. After getting the dress measured to my liking, I was quoted a $70 alteration! I was surprised! The first time I got a dress altered here it only cost me $15. They were both approximately 3-4 inches, too! I didn't have time to go to other tailors so I gave in the price. I was quoted to pick up my dress three weeks. I called a few days before the initial pick-up date to make sure I can try on the dress before the wedding to make sure everything fit perfectly. However, I find out my dress was ALREADY done a week ago. I was irritated. Why did i leave my phone number & request urgency on the alteration & specify the importance of the outfit, if it were to just be ignored?! A WHOLE WEEK AGO?? She could have done the courtesy of giving me a call to have the option to pick up the dress earlier. The dress was altered to my liking. I have no complaints about that BUT I did ask her why the cost was SO much $70?? I told her that all seven of us bridesmaids had to get the dress altered & all the other six girls mentioned getting NUMEROUS things done but the most any of them paid was $35 with TIP! The $35 one was for getting the dress hemmed, taken in, & having the straps shortened! All the other girls were surprised of the cost of my alteration. She replied that "she wouldn't do it for that low of a price" that "it is hard work to do alteration" & practically glared at me for even asking such a thing. I was annoyed & just left. I have never been happier with an alterations place. There are hundreds of reviews on yelp for alterations for first time users, but I'm writing this long awaited review as someone who's come to Sarah during my three years here at undergrad. There are some really important reasons I trust Sarah completely with anything related to alterations: The prices here are great. Alterations require a great amount of skill, and after some not so great experiences around the city, I can say these are extremely fair. The quality matches the prices, and Sarah is always kind enough to tell you her thoughts! This is a great place, trust that you'll leave satisfied. She is genuinely honest. There have been more times than I can count where Sarah has given me her professional opinion on the cost of a certain alteration, or how possible a certain option is, even if I wanted to spend money. Her ability to care for her customers is exactly the reason you'll always find a regular in the store, happy to hear her thoughts. The quality of her work is impeccable. Everything I have asked for here- a taper, hemming, and even repairs are some of the highest quality work I've ever had done. If my friends don't already go here, I tell them to- I've been to almost every other alterations place in the city, and there is no comparison, no questions asked. I don't know a single person who's been here who hasn't given this a well-deserved 5 stars. She cares about people. Recently, while working on tapering a pair of jeans, she wanted to make sure they turned out perfect and gave me a call to come in to make 100% sure the fit was correct. Although I've always trusted her judgement, this is one of many examples of how willing she is to do her best to make everyone happy. Sarah is a very sweet tailor as well as being welcoming and patient. However, even with the 30% yelp discount as a first visitor, my total came to about ~$25 just to get an inch chopped off a jersey knit dress and hemmed. After picking up the dress the following week, the stitching was perfect, but turns out the dress was hemmed longer in the front and shorter in the back, which was not what i wanted. I would rather go see Mahin for a cheaper price and equal or better tailoring. read more

I downranked a star simply because she's more expensive than Mahin (and they won't let me down half stars -- so really she's a 3.5), and I don't think I paid as much for tailoring services when I was a regular at Han's. Came in to get the waist of my denim shorts taken in. Since it was denim, it was a really thick and hard material to alter so I was quoted $35. I went ahead with the alteration and she measured off material from the back. I brought it in on Monday and she called me Thursday night to tell me it was ready. All in all, I'm actually really happy with it! Sarah is very sweet and did a great job -- you can barely tell it was altered unless you look closely at the seams on the back. The belt loop is still perfectly in tact and now my shorts fit like a glove. As a side note, if you plan on using the first timer discount, let her know when she's writing up the ticket for the alteration! I didn't know about this and she still gave me the discount when I asked about it while picking up my shorts. Super nice! read more

I found Sarah's through yelp and looked over the reviews thoroughly before heading over. There were some alarming reviews but I was confused that others rated her so highly... After a couple of visits,I have to say that Sarah's Alterations is a great place. I always take all of my pants to be hemmed or tapered and also drop off clothes to be sent to their environmentally friendly cleaners. Looking over the 1 star and 2 star reviews, I am a bit confused by the reviewers. Many of them barely have any reviews or activity on yelp, and it seems like their "reviews" are more out of frustration and not an actual review of the service and products the business offers. Also, if you are complaining about the price, lets remember that all alterations are hand sewn and stitched. If you want a "custom" outfit then you must be willing to pay for it, if not, then just buy the right size or fold those pant legs up! read more

Yes, Sarah is as good as it gets! Originally, I was going to go to the #1 rated alteration shop in Davis but luckily they were closed. I wondered into Sarah's place with the dress I am wearing to my wedding next week. She took a ton of time to look at the design and make suggestions about how to adjust the top part which was a bit snug. She said she would take it out a bit on both sides. A couple of days later, she called me at home, she said she thinks it would be best to get some extra material so she can get it done right. She wanted to change the neckline so it came down a bit further and it didn't give a boxy look. She had quoted me a very fair place for what she was going to do before and she went on to say she wanted to do it for the same price even though it would be much more work. She wanted her work to look great...she was definitely a perfectionist. I went off to get the fabric and returned it to her...she had me try on the dress again and double check what she would do to make it look perfect. When I picked it up I thought she did an amazing job...she wanted again to touch it up a little bit. She also cleaned it so it was nice and fresh. So I referred her to my husband to be...he got his suit pants for the wedding tailored that were a little tight. They also look awesome. In fact, He looks totally hot! Beside her expert work, fair prices, and fast turn around, Sarah is one of the nicest people I have met in a long long time. I think I have found a wonderful new friend. I might just have to go through my closet and bring in all my old stuff for alternation...any excuse to see Sarah again! read more

I have been using this company for 20 + years, starting when it was ownd by Han. He always did a great job, was very friendly and was reasonably priced. I haven't had that kind of esperience with the"newer" owner. But I have used them whenever I need alterations, even though I no longer live in Davis since I retired. I haven't needed alterations for about 2 years. So yesterday I took 2 pairs of overalls to them to have the hand-sewn cuffs I had turned up myself turned inside and stitched up as a hem - no cutting, no measuring , very simple - just undo the hand stitching on the outside and turn the cuff inside, same length, and sew it up as a hem. She was pretty rude when I took them in and told her what I wanted done. When I picked them up today, they charged me $40 for the work, no meauring, no cutting, just remove the hand stitches on the outside and turn the cuffs in and stitch them up. If I still had a sewing machine I could have done it myself in 15 minutes. I was so surprised that I just thanked her and gave her a check and left. I won't be back. $40 for, at most, 15 minutes of work. It's not Han's shop anymore...... read more

I have gone to Han over the years to get some dresses done and also some hem fixed on the slacks. He only takes cash or local checks. He might debate about what needs to be done but the quality of the work lasts for a long time and he also is able to work on shirts and dresses. My dresses fit like a glove and I know it is worth the value to have the fit make me look better. As a size 2, I can't always find clothes that fit and he will make the hem or size based on what you want . He does have an eye for fit and much experience. I know I he does a good job and is worth the money to get things to fit in the correct manner. Plus, 10 bucks for the correct fit, it can't be beat. read more

Was unprofessional by quoting me too high a price for an alteration immediately followed by a "discount" like she was doing me a favor. Which was still almost twice what other tailors in the area charge. And on top of it all, her work was sloppy on something as simple as shortening a jacket sleeve. I went to pick up my coat and the sleeves were lopsided. She was initially reluctant to fix them but I insisted they did not fit right. Then, she refused to accept my check because there was no address printed on it, which is how my bank gives them to me, and she cited some law that does not exist saying there had to be an address on them. Even though that is legally incorrect she still refused to take my check. No where in her store does she have a sign saying she requests that checks have addresses on them, which would have saved me time if I had known beforehand. I had to leave and spend my time to find an ATM, because she does not accept credit or debit cards. Even though I was polite and complied with her request, she had the audacity to say to me when I was leaving that she has the right as a small business owner to refuse any check, as if that would help the situation. Her prices are also much higher than other places and her work was subpar. I will never go back there. read more
