Imagine my surprise when I found Healthy Living Market in Saratoga!! It's an awesome market and they have everything I need and more. The cafe has yummy sandwiches, cheeses and desserts. Their gluten free offerings are off the charts amazing and whenever I'm in the area I always stop in to stock up on Nut Pods, Simple Mills and any other goodies I see. Staff are excellent and the vibe is pretty chill. Definitely sign up for their rewards program!

The Tuscan can go on so many different dishes, my favorite is using it in a quick pasta with spicy Italian seasoning and parm. The blood orange is very good in dressings and on fish. My only criticism is that they did not provide the spouts so the oil pours out nicely. I think with ordering two of their largest bottles, those should be included.

I know that sounds like a huge of food, but I only took a small portion of each, about 3-4 bites of each item..so it only came to about $12 by weight. The meatballs and the couscous were disappointing...both lacked flavor and were a bit dry. Everything else was excellent... very flavorful, fresh, and a nice selection of options to choose from. The market and bakery have a great selection of gourmet items including a wide variety of chips, many jarred items (sauces, jelly, spreads), a nice selection of pre-packages charcuterie, and an entire cheese room (think temperature and humidity controlled). They have a nice selection of cheeses to choose from. The bakery is full of amazing looking beautiful desserts which didn't try. There are a few tables inside the coffee shop area of the market if you want to eat there. We took our lunch to go and headed to the park in the center of town where there are picnic tables with umbrellas. I think it would have even better if I had thought to ask for the bread to be lightly toasted. I looked over the desserts and I was tempted to buy a chocolate fudge brownie but it was a bit pricey so I passed. The vibe is friendly. Locals know how to find parking. I gave up on street parking, however, and wound up at a free parking garage, within easy walking distance.

When I'm out and about, it's not always easy to get there so early so it's a bummer when you are intent on something specific. I really like their fruit tarts too. They come individual sized, as well as a standard pie size. It's the perfect bite after a meal or whenever as it's not too sweet and it's quite good. Lastly, the shop is always nicely organized and the staff is helpful. All this makes for a regularly pleasant shopping experience.

Made the best Chimichurri tacos on the grill tonight courtesy of Fresh Markets meat counter and their amazing marinade!! So glad the gentlemen at the meat counter were so prompt and helpful while I was making my selections. I will definitely return for the meat counter. It was my husbands birthday, so I also grabbed a cake and some desserts for the fam -- the cakes are about what you would pay at Price Chopper, but in my opinion, they appear to be made with more attention to detail. If you're having a hard time finding birthday candles with numbers, they have a huge selection next to the cake counter and some Birthday cake pieces as well. The way to shop at this store is by learning the regular sale days. Tuesdays deals are: $5.00 12 inch pizza $3.99/lb Chicken Breast $5.99/lb ground beef $5.00 rotisserie chicken Fridays deals are: 2 for $5 burgers Each week they choose a different fresh deal, so you'll likely find a deal for $5.00/lb meat. This evening it was carne asada chicken breast cutlets. Other elements that I really enjoy is that their olive bar has Dolmas!! It's the only one that I know of that carries them in the area. Never realized how difficult it is to find specialty food until I moved back to Saratoga from Texas. Plus, my kiddos love going with me for the candy by the pound jars -- they really love getting to make their own selection and mix. While I do find the market to have steeper prices, I do enjoy the convenience, but I have to shop the deals.

The owner was very patient and generous with samples of her amazing nut butters. Both of them were delicious but I absolutely love the Blizzard. I would rename it The Fluffernutter...so good! The mold looked dark in color. Mold on the surfaces where fresh items are stored and displayed is a huge sanitation red flag. I did not feel comfortable buying anything and left. Needless to say, this is not what I would expect from a health food store.

I learned recently (from a fellow yelper) that potato chips were "created" in Saratoga Springs. I had no idea this fabulous city gave us the favorite snack of America, maybe the world. According to the legend, a chef was frustrated by a customer who kept sending his fried potatoes back for being too thick. the chef finally sliced them very thin, fried them and sent them back to the customer, who, to the chefs surprise, loved them. They soon became a staple on the menu. (I am aware having now researched this a little, that chips may have originated in various places along the way. But since this was the first time I had even thought about how potato chips came into being, let alone in the great State of NY, this is the one I choose to write about ;) ) 1882
