It's been several years since I've written about the place that sells fantastic rum cakes, and I'm always tempted to buy one as I pass them in the Colonie Center Mall. But recently they have started mentioning on Facebook that they also have cinnamon rolls. I've never noticed the rolls at their kiosk in the mall, so I was enticed by their Facebook post announcing that cinnamon rolls are sold on Tuesday and Friday at their main office in Troy for local delivery or pickup. The only catch was that you had to call to place your order by noon the day before. Oh, and they are only sold by the dozen. This worked perfectly for me since I had an appointment a few blocks from their office on Friday. I arrived at the agreed upon time and was requested to have a seat in the reception area since they had sold out, had to make more, and were now packaging my order. I had no idea what to expect. We hadn't even discussed price on the phone. Since this bakery supports a worthy cause, The Redemption Christian Academy located in the same building, I was prepared to NOT haggle. When the box of rolls was brought to the reception desk I was somewhat startled at how large it was. It probably could have held a full sized sheet cake. Looking through the acetate window in the top of the box I saw 12 large rolls, larger than the buns at local supermarkets, but about the same size as those that I like from my Clifton Park Italian bakery. When I asked how much, I was told $30, the same that I would have paid at the C.P. Italian bakery for twelve individually purchased buns. You could tell that each roll had been baked separately from the others, not sharing a common tray, because all the side surfaces of each roll were golden brown from unrestricted access to the oven's heat. There was plenty of cream cheese icing on each roll. Each roll is just about a meal in itself. The bread portion has a nice flavor and there is a decent amount of cinnamon and brown sugar filling in each roll. I chose to put my roll in the microwave for a few seconds (15?) and found that it was a challenge to try to eat it in my hand. I resorted to fork and knife. While I didn't find the rolls to be overly sweet, they are very rich and filling. My only negative comment is that two of four that have been eaten at this point appeared to have been under baked in the center. The rest of the rolls are now in the freezer for future enjoyment. (UPDATE) These cinnamon rolls are even great the next day at room temperature! read more

Whenever I'm at certain flea markets or street fairs, I always pick up a few of their rum cakes. They're the absolute best I've ever had and I've had my share of rum cakes. This year, due to covid, so many events have been cancelled and I was disappointed that I wouldn't be able to take home a couple rum cakes for my family and I. Then I decided to see if they had a site and to my absolute delight, they did. The cakes are a little more expensive than I'm used to and you have to pay shipping but let me tell you, just do it. They're absolutely amazing and not something you get everyday. I was a little concerned that I'd receive a beat up cake due to shipping but that's the opposite of what I received. The cakes were packed in a box with packing peanuts and the cakes themselves were sealed in plastic, within their plastic containers. The cakes were perfect. They were moist and I really had to force myself to stop eating it! My whole family absolutely loves them and I didn't even mention that they offer a gluten free rum cake, which is why I was able to partake in the absolute delight of this amazing rum cake. There is so much variety of rumcakes and the texture is just perfect. The rum is not overwhelming and although it is sweet, it is the perfect amount of sweetness. It was honestly a hard decision to just pick one flavor so I ended up with 2 rumcakes (Coconut and Carribean) to go home for the holidays, and..... it's already gone haha. Note: you can store it in the fridge for 6 weeks and the freezer for up to a year as they are packaged. I brought one to 2 different holiday parties and they were devoured right away. After taking my kids to the aquarium and Dino exhibit in Rotterdam square mall I saw this bakery from a distance. I said to the family "let's go get a treat!" I didn't expect to walk into a rum cake emporium! I have to say I'm not typically a fan of rum cakes. I've had many a tortuga rum cake in Grand Cayman and they are always too strong in rum flavor for my taste. And I'm just not generally a fan of alcoholic desserts BUT upon asking for something else the owner was quick to offer a sample, multiple even! I was delighted to simply find moist, deliciously flavored cakes. Ones that have enough flavor on their own to not even need frosting. We walked away with two rum cakes, brownies and cinnamon rolls. Once upon a time, I became good friends with a German lady who got up early every morning to do her calisthenics before work, never once forgot to pack her healthy lunch, and, when asked about her preferences in desserts, would answer that she liked "dry cake." If you are anything like my friend, first: congratulations on demonstrating as much self control in a week as I do in roughly three years, and second: you won't like the cakes at Goodway Gourmet. These cakes are as moist and buttery as can be. I love a moist cake, and these are as moist as cakes get without the state of California legally requiring that they be labeled puddings. Also, the owners are very nice and offer tons of free samples. Pro tip: if you're buying one of these at the farmer's market, get the classic/original flavor and then pick up some really good fresh local berries or peaches to go with your delicious cake, possibly with some very lightly sweetened whipped cream. read more

Not only were the rum cakes AMAZING, the two women running the operation were so incredibly, smiley, and friendly that they were attracting the largest crowds of any of the vendors. People were stopping by with the intention of just grabbing a sample and ended up buying two or three cakes. Very disappointed in the service this establishment provides. First came into contact with them at a festival. I paid for one of their products and they offered to hold it. Long story short, we were not allowed to go back to get the product. I called them and they offered to mail me the product that I paid for. I waited a week without any tracking information or shipping confirmation. Then I received a call from them saying they were an hour and a half away and that I could come to get it. I thought it was already shipped but it wasn't. I explained I was not driving that far and that they should have already shipped it. They said they would ship it right away. I then called back another week later after still not receiving it. She promised again she would ship it right away. I THEN HAD TO CALL AFTER ANOTHER WEEK because it still was not shipped. She was conveniently on vacation. I cannot describe how terrible this customer service and customer care was.
