The podi was packed with flavor without being overwhelming, and the Mysore dosa was perfectly crisp with a delicious semi-spicy chutney spread that made every bite satisfying. The filter coffee was another highlight--rich, aromatic, and a perfect way to end the meal. The only downside for me was the pricing. The dishes are on the expensive side, and I was surprised that the potato masala had to be ordered separately for an additional $2. Given the price of the dosa itself, I felt the masala should have been included. One of the famous vegetarian-culinary identities of the Indian state (Tamilnadu) I belong to, which also happens to be the birthplace of this true global chain of restaurants- HSB/Saravana Bhavan. I've been coming to this restaurant at Edison for close to 6 years now and I've always felt that this franchise doesn't really drive me home for its authenticity in taste which is the stamp of authority for any HSB back in Tamilnadu. Not sure if the management or chef changed in recent times but over time I feel they are getting the true mojo of a HSB. The place is well lit, located in a hotspot of Indian restaurants, has ample parking and the hospitality is always top notch. I was just looking for a casual place to get Indian food, so I was surprised when I walked in because the restaurant was much more upscale than anticipated. It was very busy but we were seated very quickly. I got the thali and my husband got the Masala Dosa. We were shocked by the portion sizes once the food came out, which I feel justified the high prices. We could've each realistically shared the Dosa and been pretty satisfied. The thali was so yummy and I really enjoyed sampling each little dish. The Dosa was also very yummy, but I wish there was more potato stuffing inside. We ran out of potato and started just eating the bread. Overall this was a very fun experience and provided us a great way to sample many kinds of dishes! read more

While I really like the idli Vada here and which is average priced , I was shocked by their prices for some of the other items like chole bhatura. It cost $17.50 and the quantity that came with it was a shocker. Ithe chole felt more of a mini side dish that wouldn't even be sufficient for a single bhatura. Tried the rava masala dosa, the tomato, onion and chilli uthappam, the paneer manchurian and the thali. So many different chutneys served with the dishes. My favorite was the rava masala dosa and the paneer manchurian. The paneer manchurian was crispy on the outside and coated with a sweet and spicy sauce. But why they are not maintaining the same quality? Yup ambiance and service-wise- they are good, but I can still feel- their food items need improvement. We ordered- Mysore masala dosa Chettinad Cheese Masala Dos And Paneer 65- My bad, I expected something like indo-chinese as it was an appetizer, but it was just small paneer cubes fried in oil, with onions and chutney. The only star I am deducting is cause my dosa was soggy, it should be crunchy. Also, half of the dosa was undercooked. Chutneys which come with dosa - why it looked like they are full of water. Ordering was easy as well, scan the QR code and you order via the Toast app. We ordered the combo meal, medu vada and madras coffee. Lots of seating available in the restaurant which is nice. Very cozy and homey vibes. All the dosas came with three sauce/dipping options: spicy green one (fave), white one, red one. sorry my descriptions are vague!! idk what was in them. Ghee Masala Dosa (5/5) This was crunchy, crispy, and delicious. Had some masala in the center that went great with the dosa. Have been to this place many times now over the years, and seen it rise and fall, overall the authentic dosa place that we grew up with in India, especially if you ever visit Chennai, this is a must go a quintessential establishment. Food isn't comparable to the same place at Lexington Ave NYC, so not sure if these are franchise run and leads to different tastes. We ordered the mini idli, Mysore masala, cheese dosa and ghee roast dosa. Also ordered the vada with accompaniments as well as mango lassi and rose lassi. I have had better experience with the dosa at A2B, though the chutneys at Saravana bhavan is what differentiates them from any other place. DoorDash refunded us, but it still wrecked the meal of course to only have half our food delivered. My family and I went to Saravana for a Sunday breakfast and ordered table full of food - Mysore masala dosa, onion rava dosa, button idly, Combo tiffin that had upma wada and mini dosa. Now coming to the flavors - HUGE letdown. The rava dosa was undercooked, the mysore dosa was soggy. We immediately called for the chef and let them know that the dosa needs more time on the pan. They refused to accept that the dosa was soggy and said thats how it is made ( fyi I know my dosas ) We continued to eat the rest of our meal, the idly were hard and the sambhar lacked the usual punch. We enjoyed the kesar and rava kichdi, but thats about it. Really disappointed in the experience- both food and hospitality. Not the Saravana experience I got back in India ! We were at Menlo Park mall and decided to eat an early dinner here before heading home. We've been to other locations before - including one in Vancouver a decade or so ago - so I was excited to try this. First, this place has become a super limited frills type of environment. Servers and menus are now QR codes to order food. Mango Lassis arrive in an individual sized container that's already premade for the day sitting in a fridge (FWIW - the mango lassi was actually pretty good and not sweet). Pitchers of water are now bottles of water that are available for purchase for $0.50 (cheap - but WHY?). Think of this like a cafeteria style environment. If you've been to Bikanervala, the environment is very similar. As a result, you're effectively getting your food and drinks within minutes. I don't think we waited more than 5 minutes until our food arrived. It was rapid quick. It wasn't even like the place was empty either. With that said, this is what we ordered: Mango Lassi: 5/5. Great, as mentioned above. Rasa Vada: 4.5/5. The sambhar is a bit on the spicier side, but it's quite tasty. Dahi Vada: 3/5. This was what my parents ate. They thought it was ok, nothing special. Chole Bhature: 4/5. The bhature was fine. I thought the chole wasn't the best I've had, although it's probably attributed to the fact to more of a North Indian style rather than South Indian infused. Onion Rava Masala Dosa: 4/5. Bit undercooked at the end, but the dosa overall was pretty decent. Not the best I had, but not bad for the amount of time it took for me to receive. Price to Value Ratio: 3/5. I think this is on the more expensive side compared to other alternatives not only in Edison, but neighboring areas. The dosa and Chole Bhature were basically $14, when I can get it for like $10 closer to home. It's a tough sell for me to make a trip here, but it's an easier sell if I'm in the area and am craving the food. Also, charging for water is an automatic turn off regardless. I was originally thinking 4 stars, but I have to lower to 3 stars because I think you can get better value elsewhere in Central Jersey now. The staff was very nice and helpful and all smiled a lot. The atmosphere is nicer and cleaner than most Indian spots, perhaps because they are a chain. I have only had the ghee dosa so my experience is limited. Much of the dosa was too thin and crispy and therefore difficult to use to scoop up the chutneys because they just crumbled. Sad to see that this place doesn't have 4 or more stars overall. It is my go to south indian food place in Edison! I loveee getting their mini ghee idlis, fried idli, and chana batura. Perfect comfort food for a day you're feeling under the weather. Their Madras coffee is also so yummy and a must try. The restaurant is very spacious and there is rarely ever a long wait time to dine in. My favorite is admittedly the cheese masala dosa but any one off the menu is good. The food comes out fast with an assortment of chutneys as well. GREED. Overpriced place with bad service. The food I will accept is good, but lately they have compromised for greed. They used the excuse of Covid to stop serving water. I am assuming they want to avoid people touching the glass. But they still sell coffee, tea in those glasses. I guess covid doesn't spread when you want to make money. Now the patrons need to buy overpriced water along with their meal. How is this normal? The food is also overpriced. With a single piece of Vada or Samosa costing significantly higher than all other places. The service has always been slow or sloppy.
