But later, I noticed a couple of discrepancies: the jacket's discount was miscalculated and the pants were mislabeled as XS when they were actually smalls. After some research, I found the items for less on Amazon, so we called Hansens. My fiancé spoke with them, and they were willing to price match. Enter Patty, the awesome manager! They have a lot of variety which makes it such a great surf shop to check out. It's really easy to find parking on the side of the building in their lot and/or street parking. It's a medium-sized warehouse space chock full of tons of boards and board accessories. Prices overall seem reasonable - I was SO stoked to see a huge so many different types of surfboard fins, leashes and traction pads (relative to what I've seen at most local surf shops). Boards range from tiny finish to classic longboards - new and used offering (the used boards I saw were in loft section and they had some really cool stuff there). I found the staff to be very helpful and accommodating - I popped in to check out a very particular board model, asked a bunch of questions and the staff answered them all without issue or attitude! Apparently, they have a demo program for some of their boards as well but not sure how extensive it is...but it's a nice option to have before dropping a grip of dough on a new board. Definitely a cool spot I would 100% check out again.

He gave me a few recommendations over the phone, and instead of thinking about it for a few days, I made the 60-mile drive down the very next day -- impatience at its finest. When I got there, Mike greeted me, spent a ton of time answering questions, listened to all my concerns, and never once tried to upsell me. He was super laid back, knowledgeable, and helped me find the perfect longboard for where I am in my surfing journey. After I made my decision, he walked me through everything, explained why he recommended the board, threw on an initial wax job, and even hooked me up with a few bars for the drive home. The best part? Everything he told me about the board turned out to be true. On my first session, the difference was immediate. The board performed exactly as he described and made the transition from my old board incredibly easy. I was already hooked on surfing before, but after riding this board, I now have an even bigger hunger to get in the water. Honestly, it's probably not healthy. hahaha! A few weeks later, I called the owner, John, just to let him know how happy I was with the experience. He was every bit as genuine as Mike--clearly someone who cares about his customers and has a real passion for surfing. Rented a pair of foam boards and wetsuits from progression this morning and got out for about 25…read moreminutes until my girlfriend took a weird fall and dislocated her kneecap. We had to take a truck on the beach to moonshine because she was unable to make the walk to exit Leucadia beach. This was problematic for us because we didn't know how we were gonna be able to return the boards and wetsuits. I called the guy working at the store to work this out and he said it would be no issue at all for me to leave the boards and wetsuits at the top of the stairs and they would take care of the pickup. This was an absolute godsend. They went totally out of their way to help us out when we needed it, and they were very sympathetic and said they hoped that she was ok and they were sorry about what happened. On top of this they didn't charge us anything for the day. And on top of THAT they had the best prices out of all the stores we checked for rentals, very affordable and simple. I just have to say the service at this establishment is absolutely exemplary and the gentleman working the store that day should be commended. I would highly recommend to anyone wanting to buy or rent surfing equipment in Encinitas!
