I should have read my previous review before dining there last night. I made two mistakes: ordering the chile relleno burrito, and ordering a glass of lambrusco wine. The burrito was 80 percent rice, with a few bites of chile and virtually none of the advertised Jack cheese, avocado, "special sauce..." Served lukewarm. Definitely not worth $12.99. The wine, while a good pour, was sickly sweet. That said, their service is good, their salsa is excellent, and I've enjoyed previous meals there (including huevos rancheros). Note--next time, order breakfast for dinner or a combo plate. AVOID THE BURRITOS! read more

I've been meaning to go to Sarita's Mexican Grill on Soledad Drive in Monterey next to Elroy's Find Foods ever since I noticed a sign with their $9.99 breakfast deal (served all day, every day). I've been there for lunch and dinner and always enjoyed it. I finally went today and it was quite good. The pancakes were fluffy and delicious. Likewise, the potatoes, eggs, and bacon were delicious. The coffee ($2.99) was solid but nothing special (I wasn't expecting gourmet coffee like from the local roaster, Acme coffee). Service was excellent. There are plenty of tasty places for breakfast in the area but this is one of the best deals (especially if you don't consider McDonald's or Denny's). read more

Food could use some recipe tweaks. I found it to be very bland all the way around. The meats chicken and beef were ok, tender and well seasoned. The chili verde sauce in the enchiladas has no tanginess, no heat. Aside from being green it was undistinguishable from water in flavor. The red sauce is slightly better. But not the slightest bit of the mildest heat or intensity or richness. The rice and beans are sad. They are cooked nicely, tender, but aside from texture you can't tell them apart in flavor. Because there is none. Crispy rolled tacos were good and came with nice lettuce, tomato, guacamole, and crema fresca. The cheese enchilada was nicely filled with cheese. The salsa was only ok. Too American. Would go over well in maybe the Midwest but here in California it should be much better. read more

Your waitress that you hired there that came from Chef Lee is terrible. I've been ordering flautas since I've started working in Montery 5 yrs ago and, this has got to be the worst customer service. I've worked in public service almost all my life and this is the worst customer service I've encountered. I have anyways gotten 1 salsa to go with an order of flautas. It shouldn't matter if you order ala carte or a meal. How can you order flautas and no salsa to go with it. Really??? You have to buy your salsa? It's Lee ordering tacos with no salsa!!! Came here twice, first time I was in I asked the lady behind the counter what they put in their breakfast burritos. She kinda tossed a menu in my direction and said to look at it, which I thought was rude, so I left. Tried again today, had a more friendly employee who told me the ingredients so I ordered. Burrito wasn't that great. Tortilla was awesome, potatoes were undercooked and under seasoned, bacon chewy, eggs were under seasoned and soggy, peppers and onions were nice but probably the culprit behind the soggy eggs, salsa was tomato juice with onions, complimentary tortilla chips were stale and cold. Came by here with a friend and had dinner the other night. I ordered a shrimp cocktail and asked for extra avocado, but was told when the waitress came back that I couldn't have extra avocado even though I was willing to pay for it, I guess they were running low or just didn't want to? That was kind of weird. Then asked for El Yucateca Habanero sauce for my shrimp cocktail, but they didn't have any. The waitress was great and did her best to take care of us. I would like a california burrito, no cheese or sour cream. First bite, yup it's vegan. I know how a NON vegan burrito tastes, it's made with manteca/bacon grease and chicken Bouillon! I have ONLY been plant based for 2 years, so I KNOW! It was good for $14.19. I love fries or breakfast potatoes in my burritos. It was a little messy bc the guacamole was coming out the seams. Came here for dinner an it was amazing I got the Molcajete bowl it came with asada, chicken chorizo and bacon wrapped shrimp in a chili sauce it also came with two pieces of queso fresco and nopales (cactus) both were grilled and amazing addition it the dish I got a large horchata which was very delicious this was a really great place to eat at a hidden gem 10/10 definitely recommend coming here to try I will be stopping by again if I'm ever in the area. read more

Super disappointed. I think the place is under new ownership or they just changed their recipes. Whatever the case, they need to go back to how it was. I hadn't had food from here in a long time, which I was looking forward to, but anytime I did, their shredded chicken tacos never failed me. However, today, I was surprised by the flavor and presentation. To me, shredded chicken doesn't come in chunks and you can clearly see in my photos that these are just chunks of chicken. Also, it tastes like they just boiled the chicken. Nothing special at all to it. I ended up picking out most of the pieces and saved the white meat, cooked it and added some seasonings and threw it back into the taco and burrito. Oh the rice too, was so so bland. Wasn't sure how to save that. Definitely will not order from here again. read more

A little Romanian woman now runs the dining room. Speaks little to know English. I don't even know she speaks Spanish. I ordered a shrimp burrito and asked for shrimp and rice only. Sometimes my stomach doesn't take a full burrito that has sour cream and guac and everything like that in it. So anyway, when I opened the burrito it was huge, I knew immediately that it was stuffed full of everything . I was so upset. I was so mad and I I was so ready to give a one star review. But not before I tasted it , Being as how hungry I am. Well, lo and behold I couldn't believe how many shrimps were in here. I've never seen so many shrimps in a shrimp burrito and all my life. If I had to guess it be like 20 shrimps. So that in of itself is a great value. Shrimp also tasted pretty good. Delicious little spot with fresh ingredients and a relaxing atmosphere. I write this as I'm sitting here after losing my appetite. The pictures looked good so we came for dinner and when they brought the plate everything looked good but once I cut into it a white jello looking substance came out of the middle with chicken. I was like hmmm that's odd. It was not warm at all nothing was. It was about as warm as the salad on the side lol. I completely lost my appetite as it was clear the chicken was just pulled out of the fridge wrapped in the tortilla and sauce poured on it. The sauce itself was flavorless. Sarita's is always a great go-to for some good Mexican food. I love their beans! They definitely taste homemade. My favorite menu item is the bean burrito with rice, cheese and salsa. (I know... beans and rice is pretty basic, but it makes a great lunch-on-the-go.) Every time I've been in, service is fast and friendly. And, while I've never stayed to eat, Sarita's is clean and cozy. My only complaint is that they are a little pricey. My beans and rice burrito is almost $14! But... I keep going back, so that should tell you something. read more

Mamacita knows how to please... hunks of tender, perfectly seasoned Carnitas! OMG THE BEST! Grácias The Guacamole is spot on! PERFECT! Exactly the way it should be: buttery avocados, accompanying bits of fresh tomato, onion, cilantro, citrus, salt. Nothing missing, nothing to distract. Their house made thin tortilla chips are a wonderful accompaniment to the most flavorful, slightly spicy, can't-get-enough Salsa! Love them! And the Burrito on the Burritos Plate was massive, a 2-handed affair, stuffed w/delicious shredded beef, rice, beans, sour cream, etc. AWESOMENESS!! Yummy Cheesy Refried Beans, tasty Rice, & green salad rounded out the to-go container weighed about 2 lbs of Incredibly satisfying meal! Food was decent , but half orders were wrong. Mine wasn't too big of a deal they did the wrong enchilada sauce , I just said no worries, she realized it the minute she put it down could have been the cook who knows. they did to the other guest as well the sauce she didn't even bring it and said it would be a few minutes no biggie . But then they got one of our other friends order ridiculously wrong after she assured us that she understood the order liked annoyed that he wanted to make sure it would be okay and it was correct. This is for health reason so it was a big deal. So when she brought it dropped it off took a bout 10 minutes to come back part of this was do to getting the other person order wrong and fixing its. When the server came back and we said no this isn't correct she argued that this was how he ordered it keep in mind it was literally so opposite of what he ordered. It was a back and forth till finally she was like okay I'll fix it. Which she did. I get waitressing is tough I did it for over a decade I get mistakes happen you have a bad day what ever but you never start arguing with a guest firstly. Secondly there was only one of person in The restaurant so they were not busy and no take out orders nothing the whole time we were there . It pains me to write a less than stellar review for a local family owned restaurant. I originally thought they were associated with the Sarita's restaurants located in Seaside and Marina, but that is not the case hence the name Sarita's the Original. This Sarita's is located on Soledad Drive in the same strip mall as Elroy's. I was truly hoping for that great hole in the wall experience, but that is not quite the case. I'll start with the good. The service was friendly and attentive especially considering there were only two people running the place - assuming our server and a cook, although I noticed our server doing some back of house tasks. It wasn't terribly crowded, but our server had a few tables (3 or 4 including us) and seemed to be able to keep everyone happy. Prices are not high and portions are generally large. My combination plate, as well as my husband's burrito, was served with a heaping portion of rice and beans (choice of refried or ranch beans). Chips and salsa were complimentary and brought out almost immediately. The not so good - the restaurant appears to have no heat. It was so cold it was really difficult to relax and enjoy being out. The decor was nonexistent aside from a few paper Easter eggs hanging at the front behind the bar. The chips were greasy although still crisp. They could have used a bit more salt. The salsa was quite mild and almost pureed. The carne asada both on my taco and in my husband's burrito was very dry and really had little flavor. These were tiny chunks of beef, not the carne asada I've been served at other Mexican restaurants. I was a bit taken aback when asked whether I wanted flour or corn tortilla for my relleno, but chose flour. I almost think my relleno was not fried, but rather wrapped in a tortilla and covered with cheese. Again, not what I am used to being served. The refried beans were fine, but I did not care for the rice (again, I found it bland). Even paying for the check was a bit odd. Once the check was presented, my husband handed our server a credit card. She asked if we could pay cash as they did not have enough cash in the register. I get that small businesses may prefer cash as the credit card companies have service charges, but then make that request prominent. We don't usually carry cash, so even though we were able to accommodate their request this time, it could have been an awkward conversation. At any rate, I do wish them well. However, after our experience we won't be returning. read more

This place is great, offering a variety of Mexican food for a good price. I've tried a few different shrimp dishes and every time the shrimp has been cooked PERFECTLY. The shrimp enchiladas in particular are a really good value for the amount of shrimp you get. Every meal comes with chips and homemade salsa. All of the plates are large and come with plenty of food, easily shareable if you want. The ambiance is pleasant and the restaurant is very clean. There is usually just one person waiting the tables so service can be slow at times, especially when trying to get to go boxes and pay the bill. However, they are always very friendly. We came in based on the reviews for Taco Tuesday, there was only on server who did her best to get to everyone. Four of us were there, two ordered the Taco Tuesday special, four taco for $9.99. They both got two chicken and two beef. My wife said the chicken tasted like it came from a can and returned it for two more beef. I got the chilaquiles with red sauce that didn't have much flavor. I have been coming to this location for years and this is by far the worst experience i have ever had here! The initial service was very slow and only got worse from there. The young guy who was "serving", came and got our drink and food orders and then left to prepare the drinks. It took almost 10 minutes to get our 2 chavelas and we didnt get the waters we had asked for. He did not come back until our food was ready and we had to ask for our waters again. When he finally came back with them, he asked how everything was and never came back. He proceeded to close put his register and another employee, an older lady, came in. He didnt say anything other than bye as he walked out. Didnt introduce the other employee to us or anything. We had already finished eating and waited around for over 10 minutes while the lady proceeded to have a full on conversation with someone on her phone while the call was on speaker. I tried to get her attention until i had to finally yell to get her to finally acknowledge us. She came straight with the check THEN asked if we needed boxes. I left my debit card with the check and she came over with the handheld device. I was given no option to tip and then when i saw the total i was being charged and asked about it, she said that there was a "service charge" for using my card when i had clearly saw the tip screen before she charhed my card. This woman GAVE HERSELF A TIP without my consent and then didnt even give me a receipt. The service here has seriously declined recently and i dont think i will ever be back to this location again ESPECIALLY if I see either of these 2 "servers" here. As someone who is a server, this was appalling. I would NEVER treat customers this way. This needs to be fixed and made right!!!! read more
