I've been meaning to go to Sarita's Mexican Grill on Soledad Drive in Monterey next to Elroy's Find Foods ever since I noticed a sign with their $9.99 breakfast deal (served all day, every day). I've been there for lunch and dinner and always enjoyed it. I finally went today and it was quite good. The pancakes were fluffy and delicious. Likewise, the potatoes, eggs, and bacon were delicious. The coffee ($2.99) was solid but nothing special (I wasn't expecting gourmet coffee like from the local roaster, Acme coffee). Service was excellent. There are plenty of tasty places for breakfast in the area but this is one of the best deals (especially if you don't consider McDonald's or Denny's).

Came here for dinner an it was amazing I got the Molcajete bowl it came with asada, chicken chorizo and bacon wrapped shrimp in a chili sauce it also came with two pieces of queso fresco and nopales (cactus) both were grilled and amazing addition it the dish I got a large horchata which was very delicious this was a really great place to eat at a hidden gem 10/10 definitely recommend coming here to try I will be stopping by again if I'm ever in the area.

Super disappointed. I think the place is under new ownership or they just changed their recipes. Whatever the case, they need to go back to how it was. I hadn't had food from here in a long time, which I was looking forward to, but anytime I did, their shredded chicken tacos never failed me. However, today, I was surprised by the flavor and presentation. To me, shredded chicken doesn't come in chunks and you can clearly see in my photos that these are just chunks of chicken. Also, it tastes like they just boiled the chicken. Nothing special at all to it. I ended up picking out most of the pieces and saved the white meat, cooked it and added some seasonings and threw it back into the taco and burrito. Oh the rice too, was so so bland. Wasn't sure how to save that. Definitely will not order from here again.

so many shrimps in this burrito, I couldn't believe it wow!!! There's a picture of the burrito opened up as I like to eat by fork

A little Romanian woman now runs the dining room. Speaks little to know English. I don't even know she speaks Spanish. I ordered a shrimp burrito and asked for shrimp and rice only. Sometimes my stomach doesn't take a full burrito that has sour cream and guac and everything like that in it. So anyway, when I opened the burrito it was huge, I knew immediately that it was stuffed full of everything . I was so upset. I was so mad and I I was so ready to give a one star review. But not before I tasted it , Being as how hungry I am. Well, lo and behold I couldn't believe how many shrimps were in here. I've never seen so many shrimps in a shrimp burrito and all my life. If I had to guess it be like 20 shrimps. So that in of itself is a great value. Shrimp also tasted pretty good. It's NOT the best shrimp burrito I've ever had but definitely well worth the $16 that I paid. And I couldn't believe how many shrimps came in this thing wow.

Cheap! But very obviously Americanized to meet local clientele expectations. More than OK for the price though.

Did ownership change or something? Used to be one of the best in San Diego but now it's extremely bland. Even the horchata is bland.

The very best chicken enchiladas I've ever had. It is a bit of a hole in the wall, but that's always my favorite.

Parking is sparse in front of the restaurant but paid parking is nearby. We entered and wow, the place was busy. Not overwhelming but lots of people in the indoor dining area enjoying their food. The menu is overheard and we decided what we wanted and ordered. The employees were kind and helpful, we probably were the only people that didn't speak Spanish well in the restaurant but that wasn't an issue, SCW got the number 2 combo, I got the mole. Also ordered an appetizer. Seated and waited about 10 minutes and our order came out. Everything was freaking amazing. Such great flavors and so fresh. Even SCW who doesn't necessarily gravitate towards Mexican food made nom nom nom sounds the whole time. The mole was incredible, the best I've ever had. The whole time we were here it was an endless stream of customers, even late lunch hour. SCW was impressed by the contrast stream of people coming in. We even walked around the wharf nearby for a while and drove past again and it was still packed with people. Do yourself a favor and visit El Cantato. I know I will.

It took our party (8 people) a while to decide as we were spoiled with choices. But we had time as it was pretty busy for a Friday around 1. I ended up getting the carne asada nachos and the aqua Fresca that they had that day (mango and watermelon I think). Both were absolutely spectacular. The picture included might not show the best scale but I had 2 others helping me to eat this plate and otherwise I would not have been able to finish it (even as a larger man). The crunchy jalapeños with the chips, beans and guacamole were the perfect balance. As a meat eater, the texture of the faux meat was a touch odd, but the flavor more than made up for it. The staff was helpful and attentive even as they were balancing supporting customers, answer phone orders, and taking regular orders. My wife and will definitely be stopping by here more often!!

What really stood out was the service. Everyone was welcoming, our server was attentive without hovering, and the staff made us feel genuinely taken care of throughout the meal. Everything we ordered was delicious!! The ahi tuna ceviche was fresh and flavorful, the grilled octopus was tender with just the right amount of char, and the birria tacos were packed with juicy, cooked beef. The duck taquitos were crispy and unique, the grilled salmon was perfectly cooked, and even the chicken tacos on handmade tortillas were simple but so satisfying. We also ordered the steak, which came out cooked exactly as requested and was seasoned perfectly. To finish, we shared the tres leches cake, and it was the perfect ending. It was light, moist, and not overly sweet, with fresh raspberries that added a nice touch. Between the excellent food, friendly service, and inviting atmosphere, this was an easy five star experience. We'll definitely be back to try more of the menu, and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a great meal!!

If you're an Amex Platinum cardholder looking to burn Resy credits in Monterey, this Mexican restaurant is worth a try -- but manage your expectations. We had a reservation and were seated right away, which was a plus. Started with chips and guac and a couple of drinks, then ordered the chicken enchiladas and the skirt steak and arugula salad, adding shrimp to the salad. The food was fine, the atmosphere was fine, the service was fine -- nothing memorable, nothing bad. The real issue is price. Adding shrimp to a salad cost about $15, and our total with tip came out to around $140 for two people. For that price point in Monterey, I expected more from the food and overall experience. Would I come back? Probably not at full price. But if you have the Amex Platinum and quarterly Resy dining credits to use, it softens the blow enough to make it worth trying once.

You can tell it's been a local favorite for decades--the hand-scrawled signs and slogans everywhere give it so much character. They've been around for 40 years! The Blackened Chicken sandwich is what they're famous for, and it lives up to the hype as I've been ordering it since middle school. It's got a solid kick, and that buttermilk garlic dressing they use is addictive. If you're leaning more toward the taqueria side, the Blackened Shrimp Tacos and the Steak Fajitas are the move. I also get the House Burrito a lot as it's one of their famous specialties. Everything feels fresh and grilled, not greasy, which is a nice change of pace. The service is fast and friendly and the portions are huge for the price. It's a small, no-frills spot inside, but they have plenty of seating and a steady stream of locals picking up takeout which is always a good sign. Every meal comes with chips and salsa! Pro tip: They're closed on Sundays, so make sure you get your fix during the week. Definitely the best spot in PG for a quick, high-quality lunch that won't break the bank.
