This included purchasing our first home together and hopefully starting a family soon after. This also meant that we would need to save where we can, that perhaps a traditional wedding may be out of reach. We began challenging ourselves to identify what's most important to us as we thought through every layer of a wedding ceremony and reception dinner. From here we realized that honoring our past was most dear to us. We met in San Francisco just a few months before the pandemic and moved in together when the shelter-in-place order was first announced and inevitably extended. We would take long walks in Golden Gate Park during those weeks that would become months before becoming years. I had never noticed how beautiful the park was until then. Maybe the side effects of all this led to us slowing down our lives to better appreciate what we have in front of us. We found a little nook in the park during one of these walks and knew that this spot felt right to us. The reason I am describing so much about our process is because we didn't realize how critical this was in finding the right photographer for our wedding. Naively, we thought that selecting a photographer was as easy as browsing through their catalog and deciding if their "skill" matched our "expectation". Yet there is so much more to it than that. Photographers are creators and creators feel most energized when inspired. We met with a number of photographers before meeting Angela ("Angie") Jazmin. They were all nice and their work looked good enough, but it didn't feel "right" after our initial interviews with them. Then we met Angie. Her energy, her passion for photography, her presence, and her curiosity - all of this together made us certain she was the right person to chronicle our wedding. She was genuinely interested in all the details of how we met, what we were looking for, and how we aimed to honor our past. We could tell that she loved our story and because of that, we knew that we could trust her. We immediately thought of her as a friend, rather than just a vendor. Photographs are glimpses of the past, and when done right, they can transport you to a time in which your mind can't journey alone. We wanted to honor where we first met - my wife's old apartment - for our engagement pictures, then honor where our romance bloomed in the Outer Sunset for our wedding pictures. Angie immortalized those moments for us by not only shooting the most incredible photographs, but also doing so on 35mm film and then capturing our entire day on a retro super8 motion film. It seems that she, too, enjoys honoring the past. This is a long-winded review but it felt necessary.
