Used to come here a lot when growing up, and recently came back for the nostalgia. Went for dinner on a Friday night - there was only one other customer in at the time and so the waitress let us sit anywhere we wanted. Ambience was good, and the place feels cozy. Menu is pretty extensive and there are many different sizes. Smaller rice bowls at cheaper prices were available as well as more expensive meal sets. Even cheaper meals combos are available for students. Once we ordered food, it took a pretty long time to come (at least half an hour), considering that there were only 3 total customers in the restaurant. However the food was very delicious when it did come. The sole waitress was pretty much on her phone at another table the entire time apart from serving the food. The food is very good though. Hidden gem that's really worth visiting. Service is friendly and attentive. This small family owned Taiwanese/Korean restaurant serves huge variety of vegetarian dishes in addition to their traditional Taiwanese/Korean cuisine. The menu is super extensively long. This is a Taiwanese restaurant in the Royal Oak area. They are never super busy. I ordered the popcorn chicken combo with rice. They have lunch combos for $13 which is super good price. However, their food was very mediocre. It tasted like home cooking. Nothing special. I was also surprised for a Taiwanese restaurant, they have super limited amount of sauces. B ordered the Korean beef combo. It tasted like they used instant sauces that you can get from T&T to marinate their meat. Portion size was ok. Service was ok. The restaurant interior looks very average. They serve very no frills chinese/taiwanese versions of korean food. However, even with no frills, their prices aren't that low and almost comparable to korean restaurants. We ordered the kimchi hot pot and the budae hot pot. Both didnt have much to offer. It was not korean flavor at all but tasty in its own way. It was a nice day to go for a walk and grab some takeouts. This Taiwanese restaurant is just around the corner of where Stem Japanese Eatery is. I learned about this place from a Facebook group post. They have "mini" Taiwanese bento for $7.50 each. I think the size is pretty decent size to be honest and they have vegetarian options too. It's perfect to just grab a bowl and picnic at the park around the corner too. We ordered the Taiwanese popcorn chicken and their pork bento. We didn't order any train bento while we were in Taiwan last year due to COVID maybe the next time we go back we can actually enjoy food on their train. I visited for dinner on a Saturday evening and there was no one else dining in. I guess most of their business is take-out? They have a huge vegetarian menu, with all sorts of different appetizers, deep fried snacks, hot pots, and combo meals--all vegetarian (not necessarily all vegan, as some dishes have egg, so check). I ordered the vegetarian rice tube pudding ($8.75 plus tax) and the vegetarian spicy hot pot ($17.45 plus tax), which I asked for to be "very spicy". That was too much food, but I was hungry. The rice tube pudding came out in under 10 minutes. If you've not had this dish before, it's sort of like the sticky rice you get for dim sum. This version came with marinated shiitake mushrooms, taro (I think), some fake meat of some sort, and drizzled with a sweet and very salty sauce. Pretty solid dish, especially with the mushrooms and taro. Nothing all that tantalizing flavour-wise, but I enjoyed it. 3.5/5 The hot pot was spicier than anything I've had in years, which is I guess my fault for asking for it "very spicy"--though I figured it'd be like most places that water it down for the Western palate--not here! Massive portion with all sorts of tofu, bok choy, cabbage and enoki mushrooms. The spiciness came in the way of copious chilis and chili oil, making for an extremely oily broth. I was sweating profusely and coughing frequently due to the spice, but I did enjoy the heat, I must say. The flavour depth was not all that impressive though. It was adequately salty and pant-shittingly spicy, but really not that flavourful. You get some plain noodles on the side with some more chili oil for dipping I guess -- pretty bland way to serve noodles. All in all, this was solid, but a bit underwhelming flavour-wise and overwhelming spiciness-wise. 3/5 Overall, solid food, but I think I just don't enjoy Taiwanese cuisine enough to return -- I'd rather the richer flavours from Cantonese and especially Szechuan cuisine. read more

This is a nice small place along Royal Oak, near Rumble Street in Burnaby. My wife and I came here on a weekend for lunch. It wasn't as busy as we thought it would be in terms of dine in but there was a lot of takeout/food delivery orders. This place is run by a family. My wife got the seafood tofu pot and I got the BBQ pork dish. The tofu pot was filling for my wife as it had a lot of vermicelli, pork, shrimp, etc and a bowl of rice. Mine was flavorful as it wasn't salty like some places. They have a lower cost lunch menu ( smaller portions ) and a regular menu. They mentioned that during the weekdays, it is super busy at lunch as there is a high school around the corner, which could explain that other menu. The Taiwanese servers took good care of the orders and customers' needs. Pricing - reasonable pricing for bigger portion of the food. Minimum order is $3.50 per person. It is a little bit cheaper than other Korean/Taiwanese restaurants. Food - there are a lot of varieties on the menu. The most popular dishes are their hot pots. My friends and I ordered seafood fish hot pot, seafood udon pot and seafood kimchi pot for dinner. All the of them were good. We just waited for a long time for the food. We realized that customers at other tables were the same who had been waiting for a long time for their food as well. Perhaps the chefs needed to put a lot of time and effort to prepare and cook the food in the kitchen?? Ambiance - family type of atmosphere. The interior design is not fancy at all or there is no renovation inside. It looks a bit old inside overall. Location - further away from Kingsway and not a lot of people know about this place. Korean style Taiwanese food? Here's something different. Parking is available directly in front on Royal Oak, as well as along Rumble. The inside is quite bare bones. It honestly reminded me of a classroom in Asia, but with peach-coloured walls. Adding to this theme is the giant air conditioners in the corner, and the utilitarian tables that can almost pass as desks. The dining area is quite large, and the tables can easily be arranged to large classes, I mean groups of people. The place looks like it's run by a family (mom, dad, daughter?). Staff were helpful. Even though the sign in front of the restaurant says "Korean style tofu hot pot", what they really mean is "Korean food with a slight Taiwanese twist". The "hot pot" bit is quite the misnomer in this case. The bibimbap (notice this is a Korean dish, not a Taiwanese one) I had was really a sizzling plate style that would normally be reserved for BBQ meats. No stone bowl either. With that said, the food was organized into dainty little sections (bean sprouts, turnip strips, kimchi etc.), with an inverted "bowl" of rice in the middle, and a raw egg on top. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to mix it all up and ruin the look, or eat it by sections. The food looked quite dainty and photogenic - almost like one of those wax dishes used in displays. All of the items were quite tasty. The plate was hot enough to slightly burn the rice into crispy form, but not as much as I would've liked. Special mention for this dish. It also came a side of seaweed (miso?) soup. This place also has many other types of food, such as noodle soup, and seafood. The pictures in the menu look quite tasty too. I'll definitely be back to try some more dishes, and maybe their bubble tea. The only downside to this place is the location. There's actually quite a bit of stuff at this intersection (Royal Oak and Rumble), but not too many people seem to know about it. If this place were right on Kingsway, I'd bet it would do quite well. We were excited to be back for the first time in 3 years after moving to another city. Our excitement turned to concerns, what happened? Both the service and the food were competing for the worst and I can't decide which one would be the winner. It pains me to leave a bad review for this family owned restaurant. But if they want to stay in business, it's better I break it to them. Food: The bowl of Korean seafood hot pot was so unimpressive, it looked like a pack of instant noodle with a meager amount of meat. Two tiny pieces of shrimp, one piece of mussel, one piece of squid and three bits of pork for $9. The plate of BBQ beef and rice was equally disappointing. At $13, it had less meat than a McDonald beef patty. The strawberry bubble tea was served luke warm and equally as bad. How do you screw up something as easy as bubble tea? Service: was a big disappointment as well. We were seated promptly as there were only two other tables. We were served three cups of piping hot tea even though we had our four year old son with us. I asked for two cups of water, and the server brought us two forks. I asked for two cups of water again, and were finally served two cups of room temp water. A quarter way through our meal, the server came by and asked to take away the extra two cups of tea (even though I already took a few sips from one of the cups). The bubble tea came without ice in a take out cup. I asked for ice and she brought it back in a mug even though I said for take out. Dh went to pay the bill and the server started clearing the table and putting bowls and dishes into the pot of soup while cornering me into my seat against the wall. I'm not sure if waiting 2 minutes would have killed her but I had to make it clear that I was trying to leave. The curry was just okay" as I found the breading on the pork chop a bit too gooey, but the curry sauce was really good so I'd reconsider ordering the non-breaded version. I've been coming to this restaurant with my family for years and it's always a good fall-back for dinner if we don't know of anywhere else to go. I think theyre trying to be a mix between korean and taiwanese food but i just basically associate it with being taiwanese. I always order their spicy seafood tofu pot. It has pork, udon, tofu, seafood, veggies, and a yummy spicy broth. You can order a bowl of rice on the side too if you want. It's about $8 and you get a decent-sized portion (I get full off it) and the flavor of the broth is really good and the pork is always marinated so well. I love tofu also but the stuff I can do without is the seafood that is basically just there for the sake of being there. Their salty peppery chicken is also very good but sometimes its a lot more batter and skin than actual chicken. They also have another dish where you can order the seafood tofu pot as well as a stir fried pork on the side with rice and its only a few dollars more expensive but you get everything in it and it's all really good. The service can sometimes be a little bit slow but the decor and everything is nice. Be prepared though because if its busy it can be hard to find parking! read more

They sell bi bim bap and kimchi hotpots but they also have a menu category called Taiwanese "Cusion", WTH is that? Anyways, my crime partner and I we're craving for some Korean grub and we were in the vicinity. I ordered the Kimchi seafood hotpot and she ordered crispy wontons and bi bim bap. For a place which is almost empty on a weekend dinner service, it took them almost half an hour for our food. The kimchi seafood hotpot is ok, spicy but not too overwhelming.
