Have I done Sash before? I can't remember but who cares, it needs another mention. I was planning a quick dinner with an old friend/customer (of copiers ;)) and our wives. I know he hates when I do this, but my buddy's grandfather also once owned the Leaf's, yes, the Leaf's! How cool is that???? Ok, back to the food. I wanted to hit a place I hadn't had in a while and not just one of those hip spots in Toronto. I thought to myself - Sash! If you don't know it, Sash has been around for a while, it's lower mid-town and the chef is probably one of the most talented guys on the food scene. I first met him 20+ years ago when my buddy Stan took me to North 44 (upper mid-town and I think closed now) where he was the chef. The food was dynamic there and even more so at Sash. We arrived and they had a cool little DJ at the door, subtle volume but great vibes. I went right up to the kitchen and reminded him that my buddy Stan told me I could get the off menu parathas, Chana and some rice as a starter and he agreed. Sash (named after the chef) is an Indian guy and has an incredible story, as a matter of fact I think there is a movie coming out about him, or it has already come out. We also had the oysters (delicious), a tuna tartare, and hmmmm something else as an appetizer. We then ordered our mains; dover sole all around except for one pasta ala vodka. The mains were fabulous as usual and pre our mains we were asked about the dessert chocolate soufflé - as you know, I'm not a huge dessert guy but because it takes so long to bake and they didn't have creme brûlée on the menu, so I asked for one to split with 4 spoons. It was great. We shared some great drinks and wines and had a great night, meeting some other friends for a cocktail at the bar after dinner. Sash was there and invited us to an evening of Indian food sometime in April. I hope I can make it. If you haven't been, Sash is awesome, delicious, not cheap but worth every penny. 100% overpriced. rude service by staff that are not well trained and the hostess seemed totally unfriendly. On the way to the bathroom, I heard the chef yelling at his staff with such cruelty. Portions are small. Way better choices in the hood. read more

Food was all delivered an hour after ordering and was cold Tuna was so tough couldn't cut it with a steak knife Has to ask for sauce for calamari. Potatoes. And onion rings (it was advertised with it) Cauliflower was tough Had to find someone to get water. All the time during our dining. No one walked around to top it up We preordered the soufflé hour and half before dinner. It arrived half hour late ! This is supposed to be high end. Yet the food delivery was like at fast food place. "Who ordered the tuna?!? Etc Took half an hour to get "manager" lorie Sullivan (who wouldn't give us her name ). She told us it was a matter of interpretation! Cold food is cold food She was condescending. And did provide a discount. It's not about the money. I read about the owner/head chef's compelling story in Toronto Life a couple of years ago, so this restaurant has been on my radar for a while. My husband and I finally had a chance to uncover it's haute cuisine. Located in Summerhill, this restaurant attracts a well-heeled crowd. To start, I had the zucchini blossom salad. It tasted very spring-like and the dressing was a great touch. I had the scallops, which was a highlight of the meal, followed by the banana soufflé (put in your order early, as the dessert takes 35 mins to concoct). It was a satisfying meal, and people come here to see and be seen. It looked like a few a repeat customers and quite a few knew each other. read more

The atmosphere was excellent along with the sommelier and waiter. The appetizers were phenomenal, kudos goes out to the fettuccine with shrimp as the sauce tied everything together. I sampled on the chicken supreme along with the miso cod and dungeness crab ravioli and boy did it not disappoint. Banana souffle finished off the night smashingly. Part of a longer review... "Simpson's use of fresh, seasonal ingredients -- the ethos of many skilled chefs -- was undeniable. Freshly imported burrata ($22), one of the evening's specials, was just one example. Its taste was overwhelmingly fresh, and I wouldn't have guessed that it had traveled all the way from Italy to arrive on my plate. The luscious pillow of soft cheese was elevated by sliced beefsteak tomatoes, pitted olives and knobs of roasted garlic. We went there in June for a friend's birthday when it first opened and enjoyed everything about it. The view, the amazing service and of course the food. The chef was nice enough to come out and talk to us and tell us about his favorite dishes. It is pricy but definitely worth it for special occasions. A great addition to the neighborhood. read more

Sash, a new restaurant name after the chef, Sash Simpson, located in mid town Toronto. Valet parking is available for $15, and I believe it is the only way to park your car. The restaurant is at the second floor and separate into two sections, a dining area and open bar area. The dining area has a modern and warm design. Once we sat down, our waiter came quickly and introduced some special of the night. We did get the clam chowder soup (special feature of the night) and ahi tuna three way (regular menu) for starters. The clam chowder is creamy, and instead of chopped clam meat, the soup comes with 4 big pieces of fresh clam. The tuna three way is an art piece, beautifully presented. There are 3 different tastes of tuna, and comes with avocado to refresh my mouth after tasting each style of ahi tuna. For the main course, we ordered pan seared scallop (special of the night) and roasted lamb rack (regular menu). There are three large pieces of scallops, well seasoned, and cook perfectly. The lamb rack is juicy and tender, and it has a nice combine with the mint apple chutney. Finally, we had the souffle for dessert, however, it is so small when souffle was brought to our table. A little disappointment from the size of the souffle. Overall, i would come back to the second to try their other items from the menu. read more

If you want to support a business and a Chef that creates a positive work environment, this is not the place to support. A Chef that takes advantage of his cooks, verbally abuses front of house staff, and over charges sightless customers. Food is unimaginative, and comes directly from Mark McEwans recipes. Focus on excelling your staff, promoting them to move on and grow vs entrapping them and not creating a world beyond your grasp. read more

On October 22nd I was part of a party of five. We were celebrating one of our party's 84th birthday and the lady who was guesting this dinner alerted the staff of his birthday no less than three times prior to dinner. After acknowledging this they did absolutely nothing when the time came. Upon leaving the restaurant we expressed our disappointment and asked why they failed to come through. They said they were sorry. Sorry doesn't cut it after our host laid out a small fortune for this celebratory meal. Food was excellent but SERVICE counts just as much. My wife made a reservation at Sash Friday night, I was surprised how easy it was to get a reservation last minute. Arriving at the restaurant it seemed to have a romantic vibe , candles going up the stairs , dimmed lighting and beautiful decor. We were seated close to the kitchen , which made things a bit loud for us. Waiters and food runners constantly running food from the kitchen. After looking at the menu it seemed everything was extremely pricey, from food to wine. The cheapest bottle of wine was about $85 dollars. We ordered the really pricey 14 ounce rib-eye for $85 dollars and the $18 dollar frites with parmesan . My wife had the lobster risotto which was a very expensive small portion for $48 dollars. My steak was cooked charred on the outside and medium on the inside. All I could taste was burnt steak, I was close to sending it back but didn't want to cause a seen. My wife was not impressed with her $48 dollar tiny plate of risotto that had a over powering truffle taste to it. I gave her half my steak because it just did not agree with me and she was still hungry. The service was decent for a restaurant trying to be high end, but the food was pricey and not all that good. I wouldn't be going back to this restaurant anytime soon. read more

Sash is the latest fine dining addition to Summerhill. It's a very comfortable second floor room with a nice bar at the entrance, tables overlooking Yonge st in Rosedale. The menu is a good variety of seafoods and meat dishes, all creatively prepared. I was very impressed with the nightly specials. My boneless ribeye was perfect and the ahi tartare was delicious and fresh. Small but well thought out wine selection. Make sure to check out the cocktails. Service is crisp and professional. We'd been wanting to try Sash since we first heard about it opening up in the neighbourhood, mainly because our inertia leads us to seek dining options within short walking distance of our home, but also because it sounded intriguing. A North 44 trained chef and an interesting menu led us to secure a booking as soon as we could. Pre-dinner drinks with friends at our place went a little overtime, so we called to ask to move our long-booked reservation by half an hour. The host was completely accommodating and made the change, no questions asked - great first impression! When we arrived, our table was still turning over, so we were seated at the bar and offered complimentary sparkling wine by the manager. Upon mentioning that our other neighbourhood friends had tried the restaurant and raves about it, the manager was so chuffed that he upgraded us to champagne - great second impression! Our quartet was seated at the banquettes, a few tables away from the bustling open kitchen. The space is elegant and comfortable. Service was prompt, friendly, and knowledgeable. The food did not disappoint. My steak was done exactly how I like it and came with a nicely balanced sauce. I prefer a slightly richer sauce, but it was very good, nonetheless. Frites with heaps of shaved parm were a hit at the table, as were the wine selections. The chocolate soufflés were a bit of a miss for us - a little too puddingy and dense, but still tasty. The ice cream was the better post prandial option. All in all, a great dining experience and lovely service. We plan to return! read more

Went out for dinner last night with friends. While the restaurant was following COVID reduced occupancy we had to shout at each other to be heard. The noise level combined with the loud music made the evening uncomfortable. The food was good but not fantastic. Doubtful we would return given the cost. read more

The only reason I do not immediately give this passionate and talented chef and his namesake restaurant five stars is the lightweight, young and sadly unimpressive wine list which is not at all up to the elevated caliber of the magnificent ouvres d'art which flow expertly and effortlessly from the finely tuned kitchen. Sash Simpson is " un passionné de la grande gourmandise "  His is a beautiful story of salvation and perseverance. Regardless, that would not influence my review if he could not cook. Folks, Sash Simpson can cook. His menu creation, preparation, seasoning, preparation, platIng and passion are meticulous The room is beautiful and he has seasoned and professional staff. Sash is worthy of 1 Michelin Star and when the wine list hopefully evolves to rise to the level of la cuisine, two stars would easily follow.
