I had promised my wife, when we married, that before I died we would go to Italy. So I started researching tour companies when an acquaintance happened to mention that she and her husband had just returned from touring Italy with Doug Sassi. Well, one thing led to another and the next thing we know we are on our way to Italy, with my brother and his lady friend as well as mutual married friends, to meet up with Doug Sassi and another couple joining our group.
We spent 3 days in Rome, 2 days in Florence, 3 days in Venice and 2 days in the Piemonte region of Italy.
What were the hotels like? Charming and perfectly located-no complaints at all.
Now what makes Sassi Italy Tours special? Doug Sassi.
Doug's knowledge of history, art history, the various techniques utilized by the artists whose works we witnessed (you don't see art in the presence of Doug Sassi...you experience it in a way that to me at least is like witnessing it's inception as a thought of the artist through its creation because of the way he shares his incredible knowledge of the artist as a person as well as his admiration of the finished work). Doug is a truly amazing human being who is so humble and self deprecating it's easy to underestimate his genius until you become aware of the "tours". You will know them by their flag waving leaders or their gleaming busses, and certainly by their earpieces and glazed eyes as they try and keep together and keep up! (I often wondered if they were going to be tested on some of the material at the end of their tour). I teased Doug that I was going to buy him a beanie with a propeller to designate him as our leader...he promised me the grossest T shirt in existence if I did!! All of us agreed that Doug made our trip so special in so many little, different and meaningful ways which when put together were larger than we realized and make us want to arrange another tour ASAP!!
And then there was the food, wine and Piemonte and its' people...Oh My God...the best just got better...if there is any way you can visit the Piemonte and experience the people, the wine and the way of life there DO IT!!
I have rambled on enough, just do yourself a favor and arrange a tour with Doug. He is a treasure and not to be missed. read more
