We went on a Thursday in November at 11 am. Food 3/5: if you like grilled cheese and nothing else, this will be your favorite stop. Overall not many options besides grilled cheese. We all got grilled cheese variations with apples, salad and soup as sides. The chicken bacon ranch grilled cheese was overall the best. Both of the salads had rotten leaves, so best to avoid that unless you're ok picking through for good leaves. Service 5/5: the food came quickly and the staff was very friendly. Ambiance 1/5: we were very disappointed overall since they hype themselves up as an experience that includes cows. There were no cows in sight. I know during the summertime they will have baby cows, but overall to me there should be more transparency around not actually seeing cows when you visit the creamery. Other than that there is a small parking lot that can get very busy at times, but plenty of places to sit. We did love the kids playground outside but all of the bikes were broken/didn't work and the bags put away for corn hole. Overall we were really disappointed at this trip. No cows and lunch was just ok. If you are looking for a spot just for ice cream, they have amazing options and plenty of room for the kids to play, just don't tell your kids there are cows because you likely won't see any. read more

Made a visit for lunch with the family after Christmas and the food and service were excellent! It wasn't busy so we had no problem finding parking and tables. Food came quickly and I loved the chicken bacon ranch sandwich and tomato soup. Sandwiches come with unlimited milk and they have lots of good flavors. We love Sassy Cow! Lunch menu is limited, but excellent! I'm not usually a fan of tomato- basil soup, but their's is excellent! Unlimited milk bar...chocolate, white or chocolate mint. The ice cream is excellent and lots of choices. And even the " children's portion" is enough for an adult! They sell their own products right there, along with cheeses, processed meat products and some packaged deli products. We purchased a gallon of the whole milk before we left...priced at $3.65, while grocery store price was $4.29... nice savings! Service is excellent and friendly. There is seating indoors and outdoors and very clean bathrooms indoors as well. Only disappointment is that tours are a minimum of 15 people, cost at $5 a person ( but includes ice cream in the end) and the tour must be arranged ahead of time. Sadly, a big disappointment for us - we drove pretty far off our route to experience a dairy farm tour and see the animals featured & sadly neither were an option - summer only and it's on us for not calling ahead. The route there was really rough bc the 7 miles off the main town we drove was under construction - all gravel (glad we were in a rental), sadly did not see any cows on all the farmland we drove past, but did see a large horse farm. Sassy Cow itself is basically a large modern farm style building with a wide selection of their ice creams and a grilled cheese menu, which is great if you set your expectations for that. We didn't end up trying ice cream bc we anticipated a tour or animal petting area first and the line was really long, so can't speak to that, but people sure looked to be enjoying it. Always the best! Great ice cream at great prices and some very tasty grilled cheese sandwiches that I forgot to get pictures of. The adult special sandwich of the day we got came with a nice side salad. The special was a maple bacon grilled cheese and it was pretty tasty. It was nice to be able to dunk in maple syrup. We also had to get ice cream and we got single scoops of two flavors each. I went with fall flavors and the apple pie paired pretty well with the coconut cream pie. I also sampled the pumpkin pie, but they didn't have enough left to fill the dish, otherwise I would have subbed that in my dish. The other pair we got was the eggnog and the caffeinates cow. These two also paired really nicely together. I'm so happy it's finally eggnog season again and before we left, we had to buy some of their regular eggnog as well. The kids really enjoyed themselves playing on the tractor play structure outside and also with the little library, barn, and cows inside. I was there to take a farm tour on a Saturday. The ticket gives the address of the store. Once you reach the store, the direction to the actual farm tour location will be handed to you as a card. It takes another 5 minutes of travel to reach there. Not sure why it has to be done this way. The tour address is in Google maps. The additional hop will add 15 minutes to the journey. Farm was neat. Automation in the farm is impressive. Cows looked happy. Once the tour is complete, I was given a pint of chocolate (or regular) milk. I went to the farm store to try some diary products. I went for two 2 scoops of ice creams. Pistachio and butter peccan were my favorite flavors. Pistachio may be the best. There was not green artificial color to make pistachio ice cream look green. That was the best part of it. Plus there was a good amount of pistachio in the ice cream. Dark cherry chocolate and pie overload were really good flavors too. Price was reasonable. I also took some milk, cheese and other small items to take home. There were was a small slide and some tricyles for kids to play. Overall it was a simple fun filled place to be. read more

Holy cow! This was an amazing stop on an afternoon country drive with my Mom during my visit from out of state. This place is everything that's great about visiting Wisconsin: a multi-generation family business producing high quality dairy products at fair prices. The store is airy and inviting, with plenty of space for browsing or enjoying a sandwich or ice cream treat. You can check out the milk production and bottling line through the windows in the back. We enjoyed oversized scoops of their luscious ice cream and I bought a few pieces of cheese produced by other local dairies. Fun day. There were four of us. Arrived about 12:45 pm on a Friday and the place was a mob scene. Hardly a parking spot left in the lot. Waited in line about 10 minutes to order and was immediately informed that it would take about an hour to get our food. We headed outside to the picnic tables under the canopy and enjoyed the afternoon. It was sunny, the sky was blue and the surrounding farms on the horizon were beautiful. A nice breeze kept us cool. Our order came up and we enjoyed our food. Grilled cheese sandwiches came on farm fresh bread and plenty of cheese. Potato salad was very flavorful but the serving was modest. And the milk, it was rich, cold and hearty. I could drink a gallon of it. One person in our group spoiled it and ordered skim. Boo ! We didn't get ice cream because the line was out the door with kids on their last day of school. And, our skim milk drinker reminded us that we were full. Boo ! After two weeks of below zero windchills and barely leaving the house, I packed up the family and took a drive to Sassy Cow! I've only been wanting to do this for 8 years! We treated ourselves to Valentine's Day grilled cheeses, ice cream, and the best milk in all the land. We are daily drinkers of Sassy Cow milk but the flavored milk from the unlimited milk bar- that's a treat! Now, I'm quite sure I've had a better grilled cheese but the five stars is for the concept, the friendliness, and for what I'm sure is an awesome farm tour that I elected to not even inquire about given the temps outside. We ordered our grilled cheese variations at the counter and settled into a large booth to wait, gazing at the ice cream case and mulling over the many choices. Knowing I'd be indulging later I responsibly chose the salad as the side to my grilled cheese. It was perfect! The family chose chips...and I dare say they were Slide chips which are so so good! I ended up not being able to decide on ice cream and went with a chocolate covered strawberry latte which was delightful. How cool it would be to live near here and pick up your fresh milk and treat yourself to an ice cream cone every week. They sell local meat and cheeses and all sorts of other delights as well. TL:DR - Sassy cow does a great job of highlighting their dairy, serving ice cream, milk, and grilled cheeses. Everything was great quality and everyone was super nice. You also get to enjoy the grounds with live animals and mini tractors for kids. Just know they have a $10 card minimum, so if you only want ice cream, bring cash. Sassy cow ice cream itself, doesn't necessarily get 5 stars, but the establishment as a whole does easily. The ice cream here is amazing and super high quality, but I've realized at some point, high quality ice cream is high quality ice cream. Sassy cow doesn't do anything above and beyond other creameries in terms of taste or flavor that I can tell or discern. But we came here to get good quality ice cream, milk, and dairy products, and it deliver on all fronts, while also providing a really great behind the scenes experience. We came hungry for lunch and was surprised they served hot foods, most of which was some form of grilled cheese, which again great, cause we came here to really enjoy their dairy products. On top of that, anytime I get grilled cheese, I want to eat it with tomato soup, and lo and behold, they serve tomato soup and a perfect half sandwich half soup combination. Their grilled cheese come in two categories, classic (which has 3 options varying on how many types of cheeses you want in it) and specialty, which just includes other ingredients like ham, chicken, bacon, etc. In addition, each meal comes with unlimited milk with some really interesting flavor options as well as original white. This works with them giving you a class of milk, and you bringing it back to the counter to be refilled when you're done. On top of that, they have a few pens outside where you can meet some of the farm residents, including a new baby cow and a few goats. They also have some mini tractors to ride along a gravel track for the kids. Aside from that, they do have a good size retail area with cheeses, meats, and tubs of ice cream. Everyone working there we encountered was also super nice. Just know that they do have a $10 minimum charge on sales, so if you just want some ice cream, bring cash. What a nice, short trip away from Madison! We took a 30min tour of the diary farm which is up the road from the shop where you can buy ice cream. The tour itself is brief, but if you have lots of questions, the guide is happy to stay and answer them. Our guide was very kind and knowledgeable. You also get a bottle of regular or chocolate milk at the end of the tour. We headed back to the shop for some ice cream. A single scoop is very big and you can choose 2 flavors. A waffle cone is only 25c more! I chose peach and cherry. The ice cream was very creamy and high quality, though next time I'd choose a different flavor. Overall, a fun and tasty outing! read more

I'm giving this place such a good rating since it helped make my first trip to Wisconsin so memorable a couple summer ago. I loved the fact that they have the interactive barnyard area where we got to meet some animals - including Bubbles the calf. I think I spent about an hour with Bubbles since cows are my favorite animals and she was the absolute cutest! A great little store situated a few miles off highway 151 just north of Sun Prairie. I don't think you can get more Wisconsin than at a place called Sassy Cow. They are in the midst of an interior remodel and I'm excited to see the finished product. There's a small retail area to find whatever your cheese needs may be along with some of our homestate merchandise swag. A great ice cream counter at reasonable prices. They even have a window from the store into the dairy processing area to watch the magic happening. I've heard for a few years that I needed to venture off the highway to check this place out when traveling to/from Madison and I'm glad I finally did. Seating is ample enough in country picnic tables either indoors or outdoors where the kids can climb on the giant tractor, pedal away on small tractors or check out the calves and baby goats. We ordered soup and a cheese sandwich. The soup is in the smallest container I have ever seen. It is maybe 8-10 Tablespoons. For the prices they have, this is just ridiculous.
