Tried this place out for lunch today for the first time with friends. I ordered a white chocolate mocha and was pleasantly surprised at the size of the glass for $4.15. Looked like approximately a 16oz. glass. Ordered the crispy chicken wrap and it was pretty good. I actually enjoyed the fried more than the wrap. I was a little surprised they took as long as they did to bring the fries out with our food. The server was nice but never refilled our water for us. Wanted to order a soda with my meal but she never came back to our table. My friend ordered the pork chops and said they were dry. The restaurant was clean and I loved the pictures they had of different fruits as decor. Don't forget to pay for parking if you park out in front of the restaurant. It's a maximum of 2 hr parking for $1.50 an hour. It wouldn't be my first choice for lunch but it definitely wouldn't be my last choice. read more

The choice of vegetables didn't seem to go together well and there wasn't enough cheese compared to most melts I've had in my lifetime. Disappointed. I came to this place because it has been a go to on a Monday when other breakfast places were closed. I've always known and heard of this place as being a good breakfast spot in Salem. When I see that a place closes at 3 pm they usually serve all their breakfast dishes until close. I get that they serve lunch too but it is pretty mediocre at best. Monday morning I wanted to take my two year old daughter to breakfast to celebrate my birthday. I promised her all morning to get her pancakes. As I am leaving the house, I lookup our favorite spot Patty's Off Center. They are unfortunately closed. Let me recommend them for parents of small children... best customer service ever hands down. I walk in there every time with her and I am greeted with a smile and I get asked two questions... How are you and Does she like pancakes? Five minutes later the cook personally comes over with great joy and pride and hands my daughter a plate with a pancake. That's customer service and taking pride in the quality of your work. Fast forward... We get to Sassy Onion maybe a little bit after 11 am. I get my daughter situated and ready to order. The waitress hands me a menu for me and her. I look over her menu which has a small listing of things to eat. Okay cool, they have one pancake and a side of bacon that I know she'll eat for sure. I tell the waitress I want to get her that. Then I get... "We stopped serving breakfast at 11 am. Sorry." I get bit irritated because I know pancakes don't take long to make at all. Plus it's a kids pancake... I'm not asking for a stack. Then I am like alright... I look at the menu again and I see eggs and toast. Easy enough right... my daughter will eat that... they can make eggs anytime and they even toast bread for sandwiches. Sold! "Once again we don't make breakfast after 11... plus we put the toaster away and we can't get it back out." I about lost a gasket. I held it together and ordered her a cheeseburger with no bun. Funny enough, I could order a banana french toast with candied walnuts, eggs and bacon. Which I did. You know what I did... I shared that with my daughter because I wanted to try and keep my promise. Even though I wasn't happy with the situation I wanted to try start my day off in a positive way. When I was finished with my meal, we quietly got up. Went to the register. I told the cashier when he asked me how my meal was I told him I wasn't happy with it for the reasons stated here. He looked at my receipt and said "Well I am sorry but you got here after 11 am and we stopped serving breakfast then." I said "It doesn't take much effort for the things I asked for." Most places do accommodate to things like that even if it is begrudgingly. I wasn't looking for a free breakfast, lunch, coupon or discount on my meal. I was more looking for "Hey we could of done better or checked the back." It was all about the effort. So with that said... he gave me the receipt to sign. I signed it and gave them $4 tip on a $20 something meal (which most people wouldn't have done) and we walked out. That will be the last time I spend or send another dollar their way. The staff and services are down to earth, approachable, flexible, reasonable and deliver exactly what they promise. I was in search for an affordable caterer for the wedding, but still wanted specific things from my caterer, and they were a great match. If you're looking for ultra fancy food or stylish catering, this might not be your place. But if you're looking for a wide range of options, flexibility, good food, great staff and good pricing, this is your place. I don't remember the last time I left a breakfast restaurant hungry...until this weekend at the Sassy Onion. I ordered the hazelnut french toast for just under $8.00. Yes, it was a pretty large piece of french toast, made with homemade bread and crusted in hazelnuts. It was delicious - BUT they only serve ONE PIECE! For $8.00?! I commented about this to the server. She said they used to serve two pieces, but because too much food was being wasted, they only serve one piece now. I'm not a huge eater, but at weekend breakfast/brunch, I expect a portion big enough that it might be hard to finish. Not the case at the Sassy Onion. This is my favorite restaurant of all time. I've never actually had a bad experience there in the 10 plus years I've frequented it. I always look at the menu in temptation and think, maybe I should try something new, but I always end up getting the veggie skillet every time, and it's AMAZING. Their homemade jam and breads are satisfying as well, and their coffee is good, never bitter. I have tried bites of their various sweet breakfasts and all are delicious.They recently started making cocktails too, which I have yet to try, but as far as I'm concerned that can only improve matters lol... Waitstaff are all very sweet and attentive, and some have been around for years, which says something about the business. My friends ranted and raved about this place. I had to try it. Let me just say, it's a hole lotta' sandwich for seven bucks! This place reminds me of a country style, "hole in the wall"! This one is sandwiched somewhere between drunkville bingo paler and a government building. I went there after the lunch hour and the Waite staff were friendly and my order was prompt. The food was really good too! I got take out (duty called) but it looked clean and spacious. If you are expecting a room with a view, remember, you are in the middle of downtown, (you can watch the cars time the traffic light). We go here at least twice a month. My husband is obsessed with the Club Potato Pile (original style- which is to say the way it used to be on the menu- no gravy). I get all sorts of things- eggs and sassy hashbrowns (they add cheese, peppers and onions- and you can substitute red potatoes for hashbrowns), french toast, pigs in a blanket- all are awesome. Best of all the waitresses know us and take great care of us. When the kitchen occasionally screws something up, the wait staff has always been quick to fix it and generous with comping drinks for our troubles. The only annoying thing is the coffee is pretty expensive IMO. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I don't like paying more than $2 for just ok diner coffee. read more

The service is awful. Slow, unfriendly; everyone who works there seems like it's their first day on the job. Oftentimes the food is cold when it arrives. In general, the taste of the food is slightly below average; the jam is sub-par, and generally the ingredients are not particularly fresh (especially fruit). However, if I were to rate this restaurant purely on the quality of their french toast, it deserves a 4/5. Arrived early in the morning with lots of booths and tables open and they walk us past all of them to a little room off the back with rickety tables and a heater to try and warm it up. Crab cakes were soggy and way, way over seasoned with I'm not sure what - just odd. Kid was happy with her pancake and bacon overall except a couple bites of bacon were too peppery for her liking. Hazelnut French toast was dense, and thus didn't absorb the egg mix completely and was quite dry in the middle (and required lots of syrup). Servers were nice, service was quick (though would've preferred to french toast sit a bit longer in it's egg dunk tank). The old building has a bit of a funk smell that was off-putting. I asked for over easy eggs and got over medium I wanted crisp hash browns they were crisp but had a burned taste and I found the sausage to be very bland. My best friend just moved to Salem so it was our first time checking out any of the city's breakfast spots. Like some of the other yelpers, we had also tried a place down the road but the wait was over an hour and we were too hungry for that. The wait at Sassy Onion was about 30 minutes and we were able to enjoy some of their free coffee while we waited. Once we were seated we ordered the Sassy Blintz, which was amazing, as well as the BTA Scramble, which was also awesome. We shared them both and it was just the right amount of food. The service was quick and for the most part everyone was friendly. The main reason I didn't give them 5 stars is because the waiting area is awkward and the A/C was super cold in the area. Also, the wait staff wasn't super clear on how to pay your bill. While we were waiting we could see a table which had their credit card out for over 10 minutes and the wait staff kept walking passed. Overall, the food was good and I'm sure my friend and I will be back when I visit her again. read more
