Gotta renew your driver's license? I had one of the most pleasant, & easy experience renewing my Hawaii driver's license today, and I would like to share my wonderful experience with you folks. First of all, I hope you all have a "Real ID" by now, as the Federal REAL ID enforcement deadline was on May 7, 2025. If you don't have some form of "Real ID" by now, you'll basically be stuck on da rock if you try to use a regular driver's license for travel, as TSA will no longer accept a regular driver's license if you don't have the "gold star" on the top right-hand corner on your driver's license. Luckily for me, since I already upgraded my driver's license with "REAL ID" (about 7 or 8 years ago), so when I had to go back to renew my driver's license, I didn't have to go through the entire charade in providing all the legal documents to prove who I am. All I had to do was go online to the Honolulu City & County "Aloha-Q" site to set up an appointment date, location, & time for my driver's license renewal. I also had to fill out a license renewal form (that was provided to me by the staff at the Downtown Honolulu Satellite City Hall). And last of all, do the eye test. A few things you should know about the Hawaii License Renewal - 1. You can renew your driver's license 6 months before your birthday, as the expiration date will be on your birthday. 2. Most folks who renew their driver's license, the renewal fee is $40.00 for 8 years (basically $5 bucks per year, if you break it down). 3. For kapuna's (ages 72 to 79 years old) - there is a $20.00 renewal fee for 4 years for the kapuna's with no known medical issues. 4. There is also a 2 year license renewal (age 72, or Older with Medial Conditions). This requires a medical report, & $20.00 renewal fee. There are several Honolulu City & County license renewal sites, just check out the Aloha-Q website to see which site works for you. As for me, I picked the site in Downtown Honolulu, (which is located at the Chinatown Gateway Plaza), as it was the most convenient location for me. Done fast and easy... Honestly I can't really complain as I've passed this location on the regular whenever I park at the municipal which is in the same building is so conveniently located just between downtown and Chinatown along with an elevator makes it a super easy access as well. This Nuuanu Satellite City Hall is quite small and I rarely see a line so when my auto registration time came to process I though why not give this location a try as Ala Moana usually has a quite the long line that is understandably frustrating and here as I arrived in the late morning was completely empty. There are a few security right at the front door where they ask what services you're processing and will guide you to the proper window to be take care of to which you still wait to be called to the window and it was a matter of just a minute to be done. Parking can be the biggest challenge in the area but I was lucky to find one just steps away which saved me coins as I knew I'd really wasn't gonna be taking too long and be on my way as a nice way to enjoy the rest of my day off. Let me update this! Ever since the poor experience, and ever since it's less busy, less needing to make an appointment for everything, this Satellite City Hall has been great! It seems the whole team has changed since then. Every time I come here to renew car registrations for myself and my parent, it's always been a quick trip with friendly, upbeat customer service. I'm always greeted, and always received a "thank you" when finished. They're happy to answer my questions about certain things. There's a security/greeter at the front door when you come in, and they'll let you know which line to wait in depending on the service you need. Not sure if it's because the staff are a lot nicer and friendly now, but I feel the literal stench is also gone with the awful staff that was there before. Either way, this location is quite convenient for Downtown workers, and even if you're driving as there are some metered stalls nearby. It's probably a lot less busy than the other nearby locations--Ala Moana and Kapālama. read more

Checked in with the security guard and then stood in line to show my completed form to the first clerk. Sat and waited for the next clerk who reviewed my form, administered the eye exam, and then took my photo for the license renewal. I really don't enjoy going to the city hall but had to get my new license & had my appointment here. There is a municipal lot within the same block for parking. I came 15 minutes early for my appointment and security checked me in quickly and the staff immediately called me up to assist me. The whole process took maybe 10 minutes (since i had my form already filled out & had all forms ready). The staff were all kind & walked out in under 30 minutes with a new ID! They all seemed so organize and it wasn't overcrowded which was so nice. read more

This is a city service center, I came 15 before my appointment time to check in waited 15 minutes before the call me, I missed one document, they allow me to come back to continue within same day, I came back in 20 minutes and waited for half an hour, took him 10 minutes to complete the task. Total time spent 2.45 hours. You can be the judge if that was effective but I can attest to that the guy who service me is knowledgeable, polite, and did a good job. I hope highly recommend to make an Aloha Q appointment otherwise you will be waiting few hours without progress, people with appointment will bump you out because you will always be last to be served. read more

I had realized only recently that I had to renew my ID to show it has the gold star on it. Thank goodness I was able to schedule an appointment online and do the paperwork needed. So simple!! When I got to my appointment, I checked in with security who made sure I did my paperwork and directed me to where I should sit. So, my appointment was scheduled for 1:45, but I got there super early because I thought it was going to be busy. I got there at 1245 :/ I think I sat and waited for about 15 minutes. The workers there were on lunch still ... but exactly at 1:00 they started calling people. I got called around 1:10ish and I was out of there before 1:30!! I may have over prepared and brought all my documents. But, they only asked me for my old ID and anything that showed my new address. That's it ... I was stressing out the day before because I couldn't find my birth certificate!!! The staff here are incredibly rude and very unprofessional. When you first walk in, you have the security guard who doesn't even direct people properly, and mutters under his breath instead of speaking clearly. The signage doesn't help you navigate where to go once you walk in. Then the person who is doing the check in can't even greet you nicely. She seemed very stressed, but that's no excuse for treating others horribly. She was very abrupt, didn't help when needed, and just directed me to a chair. Worst part is that I had an appointment for 12pm for a drivers license renewal and because of the amount of walk-in's, I didn't get seen till almost 1pm. Terrible service, huge attitude, broken eye machine. Don't ruin your day here, go somewhere else. The eye machine to test your eyes for the driver license is broken, but this terrible woman behind the eye machine didn't know it, and kept saying " AGAIN, AGAIN, AGAIN!!", asking me to repeat the letters I see in the machine. There are several lines of the same size letters in the machine, all can be clearly see with my 20/20 vision, except Line 5. Line 5 is blurry, clearly, because the machine is broken, the machine itself blurred at the line 5 area, but this Stupid Woman kept asking to repeat the letters in line 5. It seems like she enjoys to bark at people, on purpose, she must have known all-along that people have trouble with the letters in line 5. But she never bothered to check if there is a problem with the machine, just keep in torturing people, kept on barking: Line 5, Line 5, Line 5!!! AGAIN, AGAIN, AGAIN!!! I couldn't see burry line 5, but I can see every letter in every line with the same sized letters except line 5, with the blurry letter caused by the broken machine. The next guy can't see line 5 neither, but can see every other line, just like me. Think about it, all the road signs on the streets are not made blurry, big or small, they are clearly written, why would the DMV make your read blurry letters, are we preparing to drive in the fog in Hawaii! It doesn't make sense, except that the machine is broken. This overweight-barking women behind the eye machine won't be able to tell what the letters are if she came over to looked into the machine herself, but that, she won't do, she enjoys Sadism. Clearly, it is a machine problem, but what can I say, I need my drivers license renewed. This dumb government workers were arrogent, with huge attitudes, not to mention are working at a boring dead-end job with minimum pay, taking out their frustration on the citizens, who pay them with our taxpayer money. How mess-up! Starting with a short stocky women at the door, only opening the Locked entrance door halfway when she see you waiting at the door, barking orders at your like a mad dog, making you wait outside, even though Covid restriction is over and there are only 3 customers inside with 100 empty chairs. Expect to wait 15-30 minutes after your appointment time, to be let inside, only to be "barked" by other 2 overweight and incompetent women with problematic machines. By the way, they make you wipe the eye machine, because these overweight lazy women wouldn't lift a finger. Go somewhere else, you don't need to ruin your day here. read more

Only thing is it's downtown and parking is limited/expensive BUT you can park at the Walmart down the street, buy at least $20 worth of items, get validated for two hours and then you can walk here really close. Easy to make appt with Alohaq, procedure to check in is fast and smooth I suggest getting an early morning appt they have at like 7am even thought they say they open at 8am. Serviced quickly to renew state ID and a drivers license. I'd rather come here than go to the kapalama location. read more

This Satellite City Hall is located on Nuuanu Avenue closest to the corner of Nuuanu and Hotel. The Fort Street Mall satellite is closed so don't go there. Make your appointment online because slots fill up quickly. Made my appointment in June and the earliest was in October. Yes, you can walk-in and wait, but there is no guarantee that you'll get called. Do. Your. Homework. Go onto http://www.honolulu.gov/cms-csd-menu/site-csd-sitearticles/30333-gold-star-real-id.html to ensure that you have all the necessary documents required to renew your driver's license. In addition to my current driver's license, I also brought along with me, my social security card, birth certificate, and vehicle registration. All of which were legit docs. Be sure to fill out an application form before you get called up to the window. It's on the counter when you first walk in. Once you're called, it's super fast! From this point until you walk out with your temporary license, I'd say you'll be outta there in roughly 15 minutes! Payments can be made in the form of cash, check or credit card. Because this place is in Downtown Honolulu, parking sucks. But, also one of the main reasons why I think that it's less crowded as well. read more

"A failure to plan is a plan to fail." Personally, I had an easy time at this Satellite City Hall location and I owe a lot of the time I saved to being prepared before heading here. With adequate amount of time to prepare before my appointment time, this helped to make the whole entire process seamless and easy. My best and only advice: PLAN AHEAD, as much as you can plan ahead! I'll try to keep this short and sweet but in hopes that this review will help anyone out there, I'll detail my whole entire experience: from making an appointment online to finally stepping foot into this City Hall location. I'll start off by saying, I've seen the sometimes intimidating lines outside of the Kapalama DMV so this time opted for the (hopefully) less crowded option and booked my appointment at the downtown Satellite City Hall location. First, I received a postcard in the mail, from there the post card advised that I make a reservation on AlohaQ (https://alohaq.honolulu.gov/) online ahead of time. From there everything was as easy as clicking a button with the services and information you had. You can either make an appointment, change/edit your current appointment(s) , etc. Next, select your desired City Hall location based on your desired services (renew a license/permit, car registration, etc.); fill out the necessary information then choose your appointment date and time. What I loved most about using their online service was being able to fill out a quick questionnaire to help you decide which documents you needed to bring--no more guessing or carrying unnecessary important documents in sometimes scary downtown (https://www2.honolulu.gov/documentguide/). I highly suggest also printing and filling out the driver's license/renewal application ahead of time to save you some time (https://www.honolulu.gov/rep/site/csd/onlineforms/csddlapplicationform.pdf). From there the rest of my experience was getting my butt out of the house and into downtown to do the damn thing. I set my appointment for 8:00am which was a debatable good decision (AM traffic from downtown, ya know how that goes). Parking in Chinatown and downtown can be a nightmare depending on who you ask but for me I'm a municipal parking structure kind of gal and lucky for me, there is a municipal structure right below this City Hall location (it's entrance is on Bethel Street). My only advice when parking here--wear gloves and maybe triple or quadruple mask up--unlike the municipal structure on Beretania, this structure in my opinion is a lot dirtier and the only way to get back up to street level is via the stairs (which reeked of urine and was overall just super sketchy--I walked out of the structure feeling like I needed to immediately shower). From there the downtown Satellite City Hall was located on the corner of Nuuanu and Hotel Street. If you know the Downtown Art Center and the Chinatown Gateway Plaza, it's in the same building (across the Street of Hawaii Theatre). I showed up about 15 minutes before my appointment time, where there was already a short queue of people checking in, checked in and waiting off to the side to be called to enter the establishment. FAIR WARNING: you MUST make an appointment--I don't believe they take walk ins here; if they do... may the odds be in your favor my friend. I checked in at the entrance with the woman with the clipboard and waited for my name to be called. As soon as my name was called, I breezed through the place. The woman at the door instructed me to a chair inside to at wait at. Then, I was flagged to a counter to go through the whole renewal process. With my driver's license renewal application, social security card, birth certificate, and 2 forms of proof of residence in hand, I was ready. I gave the kind woman at the counter my about to expire drivers license and my pre-filled out drivers license application. She checked all of my information, and come to find out lucky me, I didn't need to bring anything else (I believe that if your license was issued after a certain date and no changes are needed to be made to your name or address, they had all the necessary documents in the computer already). I paid for my new license with cash but I believe they also take check and credit card, If you use card they do charge and additional 2.5%. From there the rest was easy--I took a quick eye test and got my picture taken. I waited no more than 2 minutes, my temporary license was printed and handed to me, then I was out the door on my merry way. read more

If you ever need renewals/title transfers/etc, this is the one location to come too! I'm not sure where to park but try Chinatown and walk on over.. Its no longer in front of Walmart. Instead turn around, walk to fishers and take a left on Hotel street, cross the stop light and after the statue, it'll be on your left. The new location is a lot more spacious and clean. Chairs to wait on until they call your number. For any type of service you need, you have to get a ticket at the machine near the door. The title and registration side has a smaller waiting time than the drivers license side. I used to renew car registrations here until they opened the kiosk machines in Safeways so I didn't expect to be back. However I wound up here that couldn't have been done via the kiosk. I got my ticket at 11:27 and was expected to be seen at 11:28. As soon as I sat down, I was already called, sweet! Text message was an option I opted in on but by the time a text came through, I was already at the counter. Nicole was a new staff member in training who assisted me with my business. DMV's are known to have poor customer service but she was sweet! Kudos for your positivity! I dropped by this location while I was in Downtown running errands and what not. I walked down the stairs near the Walmart entrance and saw a notice that said they sold bus passes here, that's convenient. It was around 1:30PM on a Monday. I needed to renew my driver's permit which expires in mid May. I searched for the driver's license/ permit renewal form that I needed to fill out. It was in a slot under the desk against the wall, near the other door. I filled out the form and then stood in line. A worker called me and I told her I was trying to renew my driver's permit. She asked if I had a number and I said no. She told me that they were out of numbers for the day. And that they pass out a certain amount of numbers every morning starting from 7:45AM at the door that the forms where near. You can also schedule an appointment online at AlohaQ for any of these offices: ("Kapālama Driver License & State ID, Kapolei Driver License & State ID, Koolau Drivers License & State ID, Wahiawa Driver License & State ID, Waianae Driver License & State ID, Fort St Satellite City Hall, Hawaii Kai Satellite City Hall, Pearlridge Satellite City Hall, Windward City Satellite City Hall, Kapālama Satellite City Hall (No Driver License/State ID services), Wahiawa Satellite City Hall (No Driver License/State ID services)"; found from the AlohaQ website) She checked over my form to make sure I filled everything out correctly and let me know if I needed to bring any documents in to accompany the form. She let me know I could start renewing a Driver's Permit a month before it expires. Overall my interaction with this worker at this facility was pleasant, the wait until I was helped wasn't long and the form I needed to fill out was easy to find. Side note, after a driver's permit expires, you have 90 days (about 3 months) to renew it before you have to retake the written permit test. This is ample time. Don't forget! I had forgotten in the past, but now I'm pretty proficient at taking the written test. Haha, guess I'll be following up in a month or so to renew my permit. Also, you can designate between the State ID or Driver's License/ Permit to be the 'Real ID-compliant card'. Only one can be compliant, someone cannot hold both the State ID and a Driver's License/ Permit as compliant. It is an accepted for of ID for domestic (same country) air travel and accessing Federal facilities. To tell if an ID is compliant, it will have a star in a gold circle on it. read more

With each visit that we've come here for service, we've not ever waited longer than 20 minutes, even when there has been a line (SHORT, no more than 5 people). We've been to this site several times over the past 10 years since my husband used to work in Downtown Honolulu. He'd tell me about his quick adventures, er, experiences at this location while on a work break. On several other occasions, I've come here to take care of services like driver's license renewal, motor vehicle registration renewal and voter certification. As a satellite, they offer other services like water bill and real property payments, fireworks permits, dog licensing, pet neuter & spaying certifications and even TheBus passes. Today, we were in and out of this office within 15 minutes. Heck, I Yelp checked-in and by the time we were done, I still had to wait to check-in to another business. This place is ridiculous. If I could label it no stars I would. I made an appointment online. Arrived more than an hour earlier because it is right in the middle of Chinatown and I wanted to make sure I could find close parking. Got checked in by the person at the door. I waited for my appointment. Another person who just arrived and had the same appointment time was called in before me. I was speaking with the person and she was here for the same service as me. So it wasn't like like she would be here for a quicker service. I didn't get called back until 20 minutes after my appointment. I don't even want to write this review because it is the best kept secret of the state in DMV history and I selfishly would hate for everyone to discover this place and it suddenly get crowded!! But, I couldn't very well hide a 5- star experience, either. FIVE STARS. That has been my experience for both renewing my driver's license and renewing my expired registration at this location. After frantically going to both Pearlridge satellite City hall and Kapolei satellite City hall and TRYING to use the online system and ATTEMPTING futilely to do a walk-in, my favorite uncle recommended Fort street mall. I was skeptical at first because he spoke so well of a DMV, but i was riding dirty with expired plates and driver's license so i had no choice but to give it a shot. At 9 months pregnant and already dilated, the hubby drove us to walmart where we parked and purchased $20 of merchandise (that i needed anyway) in order to get free parking. The DMV is right across the street from walmart and ross. We waddled across the street and one hour prior to the opening hours, we only had one gentleman in front of us. We sat on the stairs and waited for the gate to be opened. When the staff opens, they give you a number and even walk around with the forms so you can be ready and fill out while you wait which makes everything run faster and smoother. The staff is so friendly and efficient that the whole process is very pleasant. As long as you get there at a decent hour, you can still hope for a same day appointment but i recommend getting there early to do a walk-in first thing. If you have even SEEN a satellite City hall situation anywhere else, you will find the lack of chaos at fort street mall sooooo refreshing. The staff is 5 stars hands down!! Awful service; I made an appointment to get my license renewed ONE MONTH IN ADVANCE. Had to wait outside for an extra 30 minutes. I only came here because I live literally a five minute walk away. When I was told I needed extra paperwork, I mentioned that and said I could walk over and get my stuff. Had the lady told me what else I mightve needed (or given me a reminder when I checked in) I could have walked over and gotten my change of address proof in time for when they took me in late. Tried to come back with my paperwork after five minutes anyway and they refused to take me back in. So, it's okay to make me wait thirty minutes but it isn't okay for them to wait five. Alright. Both ladies were rude and seemed miserable. Never going back. Hope it shuts down or they find more efficient workers. They claim they're short staffed, but they just seemed slow. Edit: the lady at the license renewal also tried to tell me I had a state ID. I never got issued a state ID, only the license that I had to renew. I don't understand why she was so rude about that either. read more

I love this Satellite City Hall. It's located on Fort Street Mall under King Street. Though they have only 3 ladies working there, the lines move fairly quickly. There divide the lines in two. The Makai (ocean) side is for driver's license and the Mauka (mountain) side is for motor vehicle registrations. They like the other Satellite City Halls have appointments that you can make online. However when I went for my driver's license I couldn't get an appointment. So I stood in line and got a number. There was a lot of people who miss their appointments. So I was able to get to the counter right away. The only problem I had was that I did not have all my paperwork together. I had my passport my social security card and my utility bills. What I did not have was my birth certificate. Now for men you don't need that unless you took your wife's last name. However ladies if you got married you need your birth certificate along with all the other documents. So I went to stand in line on the other side because I needed a title copy for my car. This one was a lot faster even though there was only one lady working the counter. If you're working in town and need to go to the Satellite City Hall come to this one. The lines move fast and the ladies are really nice. read more
