I always come here for video game night and some events. I love the fact it's BYOF though it's not BYOB which I can understand; they want you to buy THEIR alcohol. Lol. The choices of cocktails are nice and futuristic though it may be too far out for some cocktail purests. The they have 2 main bars so you'll never be without service. The outside area is nice and the concert area is nice though snug depending on who's in concert that night. They have old school games readily available to play along with classic board games and cards. It's a nice chill spot for a first date ice breaker. I've been coming here for years and never have I complained. I say visit if you get a chance! read more

We went here to see Kurt Vile this weekend (do yourself a favor and YouTube: Pretty Pimpin') and it was my first time at the venue. I really liked this place! And I hesitate to use this word, but I mean it in the kindest, coolest, most urban-vintage-chic way possible: it was so CUTE! Not cutesy like a ladies boutique though. Don't worry gentlemen - there is no pink anywhere! I just mean I felt happy everywhere I looked. Loved the outside, loved the inside! This place is a no as far as coffee, venue and my staff experience goes. Let's start with the price of iced coffee here... $4.50. Literally more expensive than almost every place that I've been to in New York City... or well... anywhere in the country. Iced Coffee should top out at $3.75... and after going to Continental Bakery and Chez Lulu as well as Urban Standard in Birmingham alone, this place isn't even in the same ballpark of quality. Just for more comparison... the new trend is Nitro iced coffee in bigger city coffee shops... it's "Cold-brew coffee infused with nitrogen gas is released through a pressurized valve with tiny holes. As high pressure forces the cold brew past a disc, it creates a creamy, stout-like effect." ...And that is rarely higher than $4.00 AND typically comes with some sort of cookie or mini biscotti. For my money... which is less everywhere else, the coffee here is "meh." What you pay for here is a theme park atmosphere for kids, which, as fas as I can tell, is just a bunch of old computer motherboards, board games and fancied up ikea tables. What really set off the entire place for me was that the barista was a douche. I asked if they had a frequent coffee buyer punch card and he scoffed at me, said "yeah, but not right now." People, this is Birmingham, Alabama... not Williamsburg Brooklyn or Portland... you can't get away with the uppity coffee snob barista at what amounts to an awful, overpriced Chuck-E-Cheese of coffee shops. Swing and a miss. Maybe the shows here are good? With the attitude I got from behind the counter, I can't wait to get a par-for-the-course negative response from management on here. read more

Saturn Birmingham is a welcomed addition to the Birmingham music scene and the Avondale area! I got an opportunity to attend the opening night event and had a great time checking the spot out. Mother Falcon, Dead Fingers and Helen of Coi played a great grand opening show! The sound quality in the venue was pretty darn awesome in my opinion and sounds superior to some of the venues around town of a similar size. Likewise, the décor and theme are pretty cool. It reminds me of a sterile space café with lots of metal touches, pops of color, funky artwork (some by Yellowhammer Creative from what I hear), and an overall vibe that made me think of Jack White's Third Man Records office space in Nashville (i.e. eccentric, strange, yet awesome). The venue's only issues on opening night happened to include a bathroom malfunction that put the potties out of commission for the remainder of the evening and the bar ran out of booze. Overall, it was understandable that such a thing can occur on the first night of opening when you have a crowd of eager guests seeking to hear a free show and check out a quirky new music venue and coffee shop! Hopefully, the place works out the logistical kinks soon. I'll definitely be back to go to some of the upcoming shows and also to get a taste of the Stumptown coffee that the baristas are serving up at the Satellite Café! I don't know how I haven't written a review about the place I frequent the most in Birmingham, but Saturn is truly a welcome addition to Avondale and Birmingham. The coffee side, Satellite, features Stumptown coffee (my favorite), as well as a wonderful bar with many inventive and classic cocktails. If you're a fan of all things space, as I am, you'll love the decor. And they even have a photobooth and many vintage video games and consoles you can play. Saturn, the music venue side, is great. Brian does a wonderful job at getting an eclectic mix of musical acts to come through, and it is by far the nicest medium sized venue in the area. In addition to concerts, you can also find trivia nights, dance parties, flea markets, and more in the venue on any given day. As if that didn't make the place cool enough, you can come have a "cereal adventure brunch party" with them on Sundays and eat all your favorite cereals while watching cartoons! Such a neat place, staff is pretty friendly.. was doing a bar hop night so this was one of our stops since "someone" claimed they had angry orchard on tap :) well that was not the case so the only thing i can review is the super cool atmosphere and the great decorations. Being a true geek i enjoyed all the computer motherboards all along the top of the bar area, and the retro toys, gadgets ect all around the place.. We stopped in from Atlanta to see AJJ. As a concert venue, the space is awesome. There's a lot of space to get close to the stage and the acoustics are great. The beer pricing was super reasonable as well and the draft list was great. The bartenders were super friendly and service was quick. The theming and game selection was cool as well. If we lived around here I'd come by all the time just to hang out and play some games. I'll definitely be looking for an excuse to make the trip and come back. read more

Saturn is one of my favorite little hangout spot in the area. It's a chill coffee shop by day and a bustling bar at night. They usually always bring in my favorite artists to their venue, so I do frequent shows here a lot. If you're looking for a place to hangout during the day, there's plenty of board games and old school video games to enjoy while you sip on your coffee. I highly recommend you look at their event schedule because Saturn always turns things out and there's always something entertaining and fun going on here. I'm so glad Birmingham now has small venue concert halls! In a smaller space, it is so much easier to find a seat or a place to stand. It is also less crowded and you can actually see the performer and hear the music. Saturn, located in the Avondale district, is an interesting place because it is not only a concert hall but also a bar and a coffee shop. Also, even it isn't a concert night, you could go there to play board games. They even sometimes offer Vintage Video Game nights. The night I recently attended, we were there to see Dweezil Zappa. There were three different shows that were offered. First was a small guitar clinic. Guitarists were able to learn tips and tricks from legend Dweezil Zappa. Next, there was a pre-show offering, patrons could pay extra to hear the band warm-up and find a seat or table early. Attend a party here for our first B'ham Black LGBT Pride on Saturday night. The club seems to be multipurpose. Their was more than one party within one building. The atmosphere was very nice. We felt very welcomed. There were drink specials just for our event which I thought was nice. Travis Chicago style burgers and sausages were outside and that was AMAZING. The parking however was a beast. There are so many businesses in that area with very limited parking. I'd definitely attend any events here or just go for fun. read more

Saturn is a great venue for shows/live music. They have the entry process ironed out so it is relatively easy (they scan your ticket, put a band on your wrist, and then you're allowed to enter). The venue space is a large room with the stage in the front, bar in the back, and a few tables and high tops on each side, with a large area for standing. If you want a seat, get there when the doors open, because they fill up fast. The selections at the bar on the concert side are not as extensive as the front bar, but there are beer, wine, and liquor options. I've only ever ordered beer, so I cannot comment on the quality of the cocktails. I've also only ever come to Saturn for a music event, but it looks like there is a chill vibe to just hang out, as well, even if you're not there for an event. They've got tons of board games and video games. If you are looking for a fun place to catch a show, Saturn is worth a visit. read more

NOTE: This review is for the Saturn Bar "Cereal Adventure Party" As a frequent visitor, but non-resident of Birmingham, I have often heard of Saturn Bar but never attended a concert/event/night out here. I am, however, glad that my fist visit was during the day so that I could get a good look at the place! I'll break it down into sections here (+ are good points, - are bad points) ATMOSPHERE + Fun, themed space - pay attention to the details here- props to the designer- you clearly had a lot of fun! + A good amount of seating, in various forms and various sizes to accommodate a variety of groups + Tall ceilings make for a nice, roomy feel (none of that 8' ceiling claustrophobia) + The bathrooms are decent (THIS IS IMPORTANT, I promise you!) + The board games are great- I just don't find enjoyment in the "bar scene" anymore, and having something to do/play with my friend group is good incentive to visit ACCESSIBILITY - No private lot, so you'll have to find street parking + Great street-side appeal- it's as cool-looking on the outside as it is on the inside EVENT ("Cereal Adventure Party") + There was something magical about a bunch of adults eating kids cereal out of brightly-colored plastic bowls + The variety of cereals was amazing! They had options I didn't even know still existed: Cookie Crisp, French Toast Crunch, Waffle Crisp, Cap'n Crunch, Cap'n Crunch Berries, Cap'n Crunch Peanut Butter, Reese's Puffs, Fruity Pebbles, Cocoa Puffs, Lucky Charms, Kix, etc., etc. + POP TARTS! - They were playing cartoons, but there was no sound or subtitles PEOPLE + Quick at cleaning up and keeping up appearances + They make a darn good cappuccino - Not terribly friendly (but it was Sunday morning, so I'll let that go) Overall, a wonderful morning! Came here on a Saturday night on a whim... the place was bustling with people enjoying drinks and games. I'd never seen anything like it before and I love the concept! During the day it is a coffee shop and had a laid back vibe. At night, it is a bar with a chillaxing vibe. The free games are a definite plus! Sometimes you want to hang out and grab something to drink... all talked out? Play some games! They have old school games, pub ball machines, board games, a really great variety. I am a gamer at heart, so this really appealed to me. If you don't game (um, who are you??) and you think it's lame.. just come for the drinks and enjoy the people watching. There is an attached theatre of some sort, I believe it is called satellite. A line of people going in... Saturn is the kind of bar that transports you back in time while still being pretty current. They have several board games, books and old school video games for you and your friends/family to enjoy while you're sipping on a beer or coffee. They also offer small pastries if you're in the mood for a bite to eat. I like the hipster and nerdy atmosphere here. There's a giant spaceship dangling from the ceiling and remnants of space gear around the room. It transforms from coffee drinkers in the morning to beer drinkers at night. It's also right across the street from Avondale brewing company, which makes it a trendy location. I've been to really fun live music performances as well as competitions for gamers and a chili cook off. Saturn brings in a big crowd and I've always had a good time. Such a cool bar and coffee lounge combination that I know I would find myself hanging out at a lot if I lived in Birmingham. The decor was so eclectic it had one tv showing Gilligans Island, another showing a Kiss movie, and another with some kind of oldddd space movie. They have an old school photo booth which is so fun and a whole area in the back with 4-5 Nintendos with games that you can sit and play. Ahhhh sooo cool! The coffee here was spectacular as well. Really bitter so if you're for some weird reason not in to that you won't like it but it's good strong coffee that doesn't play around when it comes to taste. This might be one of my favorite places in Birmingham. I sadly never got to experience Bottle Tree Cafe when I initially lived here, but I am so happy I stumbled upon Saturn within 3 weeks of moving back. Everything I've been to at Saturn has been a blast... from vintage video game nights to discovering new bands and even local craft artists. It's also a great place to just hang out with your friends and play a board game or two from their great collection of games. The staff are always friendly and the drinks are decently priced. Disclaimer: I am reviewing this as a coffee shop/bar and not the venue! Saturn is quite a unique spot. I've never seen a large model rocket in a coffee shop, let alone one that has a light show at night. Pretty freaking cool! The light show doesn't happen every night, so keep up with their social media for departure dates. Blast off! Anyhow, Saturn in a cool experience! They serve Stumptown Coffee, which is delicious, and have a thorough menu of espresso and coffee drinks. They offer customizations like non dairy milk, flavors, etc. I had an iced coconut or was it almond? milk latte and it was yummy stuff. Mom brain is currently taking a toll on my memory. They offer pastries like donuts and homemade poptarts! My son was all about his glazed donut and staring at the space memorabilia that covers the interior. Which brings me to the inside..wow! I spent about 20 minutes looking at all of the pictures, board and video games available, and the huge rocket! The have a good selection of vintage gaming systems that you can play and a photo booth for some goofy face memories. Awesome spot for a coffee or craft cocktail! I think they need a bit more furniture, it was "packed" when I got there but that's just a lack of seating. Service was great, fast. The place plays great music. Cool atmosphere, but just wish there was a lot more seating. Clean bathrooms. Wouldn't bring the kids, far too much concrete for any loud shriek. Plus it's a bar anyway. I had the coffee soda! This is a new thing for me- delicious!! Soda with a shot of coffee and vanilla sweetener. I haven't seen this anywhere else, and don't know why more people don't do it. I go here often to see live music. The staff is mostly friendly and the prices are comparable to other establishments nearby. The best part about Saturn, though, is the sound system. I even bring my earplugs because it can be a little loud for some instruments, but in the best way! The decor is fun and I have at least 5 photo strips from the booth. Always a fun time! I've been hearing about Saturn for quite a while, so I decided to check it out recently. I'm reviewing the bar/coffee shop, as I didn't make it over to the event venue. The atmosphere is very 1970's themed. Bright colors and loud graphics make this place feel as if you are on some kind of movie set. There are board games and arcade-style games for customers to use, which is nice alternative (sometimes) to making conversation. The beer selection was interesting. There were a number of IPA's, of which I am not much of a fan. I went with Trim Tab's raspberry sour, which is always a solid choice for me. A small draft selection was available, but most of the beers were bottled or canned. The service wasn't great, slightly rude, even, and very slow. The game machines weren't working at the time we went and little help was offered, even though it wasn't a busy time. Overall, I'm no sure I'll be back. There are a number of other bars that appeal more to me. But I am glad I gave it a try and now I know what it's all about. read more
