Went to R&B Bingo event at Workplay. The event was fun and the Workplay staff was great. The event hosts even bragged on the staff's accommodations and kindness. But that Downtown street parking is always a pain. We sat upstairs... it was a bit dark but overall good seats. The restrooms could have been a bit cleaner but that could contribute to those using it throughout the night. All in all, great space for a good time! read more

What an AMAZING place/venue!!!! This place offers the coolest ambience for private events, shows, concerts, etc. I also want to just give a MAJOR shoutout to several people I've come in contact with. One being Josh, the manager and owner, and Johnny the other owner. Josh and Johnny have been nothing less than incredible to work with, and I truly feel I can heavily trust them to make sure we have the best time. They also make sure your events are brilliantly put together. Their communication and professionalism says a ton about how incredible they are for the management of this business. The bartenders are GREAT! They offer several mixed beverages and also are super kind and friendly. They all have made me feel very welcome and I can't wait to go back. Leah, Joey, and Matthew were PHENOMENAL bartenders!!!! They were all incredibly personable, friendly, and professional. Ashley works in the box office, and she was also super sweet. She was a busy bee and seemed to handle everything with charm and classiness. Very professional, very kind. I thoroughly enjoyed talking with her. Josh is a the sound-check fella, and he was also super sweet and friendly and made our event pleasurable and easy. The process can be so stressful, yet so rewarding and he was an asset to the team. I truly can't express my gratitude towards all of the incredible workers here. They made the experience 10/10, and location and ambience is just as brilliant! Workplay is such a cool event venue! The space has several different areas to mix and mingle, with my fav being a side room that has a wall covered with posters from previous concerts. They also have a bar that serves some pretty tasty cocktails. If you're there for a show, it'd be hard to find a bad seat as that particular event space gets a good view of the stage from every angle. Last night was my first time at WorkPlay, but it will not be my last. I went to see PJ Morton and he put on an amazing show! Finding parking was relatively easy. I bought tickets online and chose to pick the tickets up from Will Call. My name was on the list and I received my wristband to enter. The room we were in did not have any chairs so we stood for the entirety of the concert. WorkPlay had sent out an email to advise of the standing room only so I made sure to wear comfortable shoes. The acoustics in the room where PJ's concert was last night were awesome! The sound was so clear. The lighting was dope too! I would definitely come back her for another performance. read more

I have been here for concerts and went today for the Witches ball. The whole venue was opened up both stages and the outside area. They had a band on one stage and a DJ on the other. Everyone was in full costume. A small amount of food was available but drinks could be obtained at two bars that were well stocked. Drink prices were quite good and the wait was not bad. I had a great time as always. My wife and I actually got in some dancing (hope no one could recognize us in costume ). This venue is also great for concerts etc. read more

Stopped by here kind of unexpectedly to kill some time before an event at Iron City. Walked into the bar area and found a spot to sit at one of the couple tables that were in the room. This is a really small bar with three or four tables and a bar space. A little bit of open floor between the tables and bar, but not much. Unfamiliar we sat there for a minute and realized that they had no plans of checking on us to see if we wanted anything and we would have to go to the bar to get served (no issue...just an observation). Hit or miss on what they were able to make at the bar...hurricane no...jack and coke yes. Specialty drinks specific to the bar not really, but they have vodka. Drinks were ok. Jack and coke was strong, vodka drink was bland and not very flavorful. Bar, in general, in my opinion fits the true definition of dive bar. Upholstery is coming off the seats and has a general feel that its a place for regulars. I would like to catch an event here sometime, as there are a lot of great reviews about the intimate feel of watching something here. Will return and check them out again. read more

Daley concert! Amazing. I love venues that are big enough yet small enough at the same time. No matter if you were in the back standing, seated downstairs or upstairs or somewhere in between, you had a great view and still kept the intimate feel. This place is pretty cool. I've been here a few times for concerts, fashions shows, and once to shoot a country music video actually. You never know what they have going on here. I've also heard of them hosting high school proms here. They have a parking lot across the street, but seeing as how it is still downtown Birmingham, it gets full pretty quickly on event days so you are left with street/parallel parking...if you are lucky. They have a bar that seems to be open to patrons all the time. Seems like people will just come here to drink after work. Their drinks are pretty hit and miss, so I probably won't come here to just hang out but more so if there is a real event or concert I want to go to here. Their actual concert stage is two tiered with some chairs, tables, and booths. Some of which get moved out of the way depending on who the performer is. I don't dance so I'm happy with a booth in the back! read more

I've been to several shows at Workplay over the years. I prefer the theater room as opposed to the sound stage. The sound stage doesn't have anywhere to sit unless you sit against the walls, and it can be rough on your feet on longer shows. The theater is great - 2 story area, intimate/cozy, good acoustics - just have to make sure to get there early so you can get seats. Overall, I still really enjoy Workplay and the acts they bring to the city. read more

I once touched Lucinda Williams here- that is a fact. Workplay has been the music-venue-du-jour since it opened, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. For famous acts, it provides an intimate space to connect with fans. For small acts, it feels like the big time. One of the best features of Workplay is its bar/venue space combination. You can literally just go to the bar there, and never enter the show. But, should you have tickets, just carry your drink with you. The main space they use for concerts has an elevated stage, a large empty space in front, then two levels of balcony-type areas with various types of tables and chairs. There are no "assigned seats," so concert-goers can meander around, mingle with friends, and mosh to their hearts content. It is this relaxed approach that allowed me to touch Lucinda- I lurked by the stage near the speaker for most of the show and, for the brief moment she wasn't playing or chasing shots with a beer (she's such a bad-a$$), she reached out to the crowd and BOOM- I made contact. It was thrilling. I'm pretty sure we could've touched Jakob Dylan had we tried hard enough, but we didn't. I'm a fan. read more

We were here for the Hold Steady show last night. Great room . Great sound. Great service from the server. Not a bad seat in the place. There is a large pit with tables around the perimiter . We had a comfortable table which was elevated and within 10 yards of the stage. A huge bouncer is the sherrif of this place and seemed quite efficient at keeping the it under control. From my observations, if you are too sloppy drunk, they take away your legal to drink bracelet and replace it with a red "you can't drink at all" bracelet and put a big "X" on your other arn with a black marker. Then, if you screw up again, the big guy comes and throws you out. I like that two stage approach. I think that if I was setting there with a red bracelet on one arm and an X" on the other, I would probably reign it in a bit. But, some people insist on providing a nice side show. We traveled from Atlanta for this show and the venue was excellent. We will be back. read more

The main venue is non smoking with table service for cocktails etc. The layout is perfect for a more intimate music experience. The acoustics are great. The bar outside the main theatre is a nice bar, with live side stage type acts. Most importantly they book very good talent. read more

Witnessed two very different shows here and enjoyed them both. One show was in the larger venue--a blackbox style stage/standing area. Not much to comment, pretty generic. The smaller, more intimate venue is really special. For the show I attended (Jay Clifford), there were tables in front of the stage and two levels of seating with nice lighting and great sound. There were servers bringing around beer and wine every 15 minutes or so--perfect. Drinks are reasonable and the bar is really nice. A truly great venue. read more

TIME&PLACE: Thursday late night Came to Workplay to watch Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue on a random night I ended up in Birmingham. LOGISTICS *They don't really have food--only drinks. *The venue layout is a bit confusing--when you walk in, there's a small bar to the right with TV screens, but if you go to the left down the hallway, that's where you can buy tickets and enter the actual concert area. They also have a small bar set up there, but you can go back and forth to access the big bar. *Parking wasn't bad -- I parked down the street, closer to Iron City, but there was plenty of space where I walked by, and before/after the show, lots of people walking around so no safety worries. *The venue itself is VERY simple -- a big stage, high ceiling, and a lot of space for people to stand around. Feels a bit like a soundproof warehouse, where there just happen to be concerts going on. Had a good time! Will cross my fingers and hope that the next time I'm in town there's a good concert to check out. read more

Very nice venue. But, the show I attended was listed as "doors 6:30, show 8:00" for a Thursday night show. The show went off at 9:15 even though the band, the incredible Dumpstaphunk from New Orleans, was in the house before 8p. The show was not promoted well (wasn't listed on the monthly calendars posted throughout the venue) thus the crowd was small. The venue obviously delayed the show to keep everyone drinking ($12 gin & tonics that were light on the gin) in order to make enough $$$ off the rather small crowd to cover their cost. Dumpstaphunk killed the 90 minute show despite the small but enthusiastic crowd. I'm in the process of moving back to Bama after living 18 years in New Orleans. I'm glad that I was able to see one of my favorite bands in a space that has quite good acoustics. The low rating for this revue lands squarely on the venue management. I will think twice before attending another show at Workplay. read more

The main stage and smaller sound stage here are both first class facilities, but it has been a while since I visited those, as not as many shows of interest to me have come through lately. I was very pleasantly surprised to discover the happy hour offered in the bar. From 4-7, they offer a happy hour that is pretty hard to beat ($3 for wells, house wine, and local brewery cans!) Also was glad to hear a good band for free while we enjoyed our drinks! The atmosphere in the bar is chill and laid back...very enjoyable. Be sure and check the calendar on their website to see what kind of music will be in the bar (they seem to have things most Mondays-Thursdays.) The only issue I had is that they didn't have a very extensive selection of liquor at the bar, and could not make a Manhattan or other similar drinks. read more

WorkPlay also has 3 famous, State of the Art recording studios. One does primarily TV and Radio Commercials and another does musical artist, While the 3rd caters to the PRO'S finishing up projects. Me and my friend visited last night for a comedy show. Nice venue. There was a long line at the bar, it took forever to order drinks. Trying to find a seat on the inside was very disorganized. It was dark on the inside and we literally had to walk around to each table looking for 2 available seats. We finally found 2 seats at the top balcony where a couple was already sitting. We had to keep standing up just to see the comedian. There needs to be a system to seating patrons and every seat sold should be able to see the performer read more

I went there recently for a concert and had to pay extra just to meet and get photos with the HAS-BEEN 90's band. After the recent shooting there, I don't know if I feel safe going back. Especially if Workplay allows high schoolers to host events and bring in guns. read more

I haven't been to a concert in Birmingham in ages. A band I adore decided to play a show in Birmingham so I bought a couple of tickets to the show without regard to the venue. I made the trek from Atlanta to Birmingham having no idea what to expect. This little gem blew my mind and I would easily return to see more shows if other bands I adore make a pit stop here. First let me discuss parking. Parking sucks at most venues in Atlanta. By sucks I mean parking is nonexistent or very, very expensive. Workplay has a small parking lot directly across the street if you arrive early enough to snag one of them. We were not early so we went on a hunt for other parking. There's a large pay lot half a block away. Being an out-of-towner, I was fully prepared to pay for the parking lot. On the way into the lot, I spotted a parking spot on the street with a meter. I quickly made a u-turn to grab it. Since it was 8pm on a Sunday night, I figured we wouldn't need to feed the meter. Unfortunately, there was not a sign with hours for the meter so we resigned ourselves to pay. We huddled around the machine trying to figure out how much we would need to pay. Then looked at each other and said surely this was wrong. It only cost 25 cents for 2.5 hours. Let me repeat. One quarter will let you park for two and a half hours. (!!!!!) That's just crazy talk. I'm used to paying 25 cents for 10 minutes. We put in two whole quarters to be on the safe side. For fun, we decided to see how much the suckers in the pay lot paid. $10. Moral of the story is to park on the street if the Workplay lot is full. There's plenty of spaces in the block surrounding the theater. The venue itself was excellent. We entered the space and found ourselves in a small, intimate area. There was a raised stage with an open area up front for those much younger than me to get close to the performers. The area is surrounded by tables on the side and booths in the back. The entire first floor was pretty full so we headed upstairs to see what was up. The upstairs is a balcony that is full of tables. A nice couple from Chattanooga was kind enough to let us share their table with them. We plopped down and enjoyed the entire show from the comfort of our seats. No annoying people standing in front of you. We essentially looked right over the stage. Great view from all areas. We had table service so we didn't need to get up and order drinks. The drinks were extremely cheap. We had three bottles of beer and the total was like $11 with a 15% gratuity included. The show and venue were awesome. Kudos for such a great venue in the downtown area. read more

A great place to see a show. There are two spaces, the "theater" and the "soundstage." The theater is easily the best stage to see an act in Birmingham. The room is clean and sharp, with good acoustics and seating in the back/balcony. The floor is well-sized and the stage height/shape is just right. I love seeing shows here. The soundstage is a bigger square room in the back of the complex with a higher stage and it's all floor standing. It's definitely not short-people friendly like the theater, but it sounds good and can accommodate larger shows. The exterior of WorkPlay is attractive and modern, and inside, details like a shiny clean bathroom are appreciated. Some good acts book at WorkPlay, so check their calendar often. read more

Perfect sound venue. The only problem is they just book one or two shows a year worth seeing. And if the show is on the Sound Stage (in back)--forget it. It's only slightly more soulful than the BJCC. Workplay is becoming the venue to see tribute bands--going the way of Louie Louie's (long gone) and Zydeco (going fast). RIP. Or get someone with a brain to book your shows. read more
