I had the chopped chicken since I don't eat much pork, but many in my party swear by the pork. Also the bread pudding is a fan favorite. They have a lot of seating and event community seating. On the weekend they have an open bar. After you get your food, you have a choice of 10 -15 sauces and you can get as much as you want. Unlimited refills in drinks too! My boyfriend and I came to Saucehouse before the game and I really enjoyed it. There was free parking in their lot and still spaces even with game day. There were so much staff working so the line moves quick! In fact, we didn't wait at all before being helped. There were a lot of people in the dining area. I ordered the pulled pork on the regular bun and boy did they give me so much meat!! My boyfriend got the brisket with the hawaiian rolls and it was noticeable less meat, but he enjoyed it as well! I walked in with relatively high expectations from hearing a lot of good reviews. The restaurant itself was slow, not sure why, but heard it gets busy around 7 because of Wednesday trivia nights. Since it was slow, there wasn't a line so that meant I got my food right away. You order and get your food, and then pay at the end of the line. I ordered a BBQ plate with 1/4 lbs of brisket, 2 hawaiian rolls, mac and cheese, and cole slaw with a fountain drink. The total was a little less than $20, which seems fairly reasonable. They have counters with different types of BBQ sauces, and out of the like the 20 types, I got the hot and sweet sauce (it's pretty spicy so get it on the side). Personally, I like my cole slaw with a bit more horseradish, so when I tried theirs it wasn't as good since it was more towards the sweet side. The mac and cheese looks good, but tasted like any other mac and cheese. Now, the brisket also looks good, but lacked seasoning. Sure there was sauce, but it also got cold fast. For $20, I could've gotten more brisket somewhere else and with better quality. Overall, maybe I would come back here for something else or for trivia night, but not for the food. read more

As I was exploring Athens, GA, I searched BBQ on Yelp! I was sold on a place that speaks volumes to sauceaholics like me. What a great name for a BBQ joint and they certainly had 8 types of sauce! Due to COVID, they have not reopened the restaurant yet, but the bier garten area is open and there is a limited menu. I chose pulled pork sandwich, slaw, potato salad, and sweet tea. The pulled pork sandwich came out with a but that was barely bigger than a roll. But it didn't matter because I was going to sample all the sauces with the roll and eat the pork separately. The pork was excellent as it was tender and had some seasoning to it. There are 8 sauces and I sampled all of them except for the white sauce. My favorites were the Western NC Ketchup (ketchup base with a kick), mustard, and sweet molasses. The House would have been my next as it was their sweet homemade sauce. The next sauce was called Very Hot and Sweet. It was named correctly. It started with a sweet taste then when the sweetness went away, it was all burn on the level of hot. I would rate it a 8 with 10 being super hot. The guy who brought it to me said it is made with the ghost pepper. The sauce has an excellent flavor but you have been warned. The other 2 sauces were the Carolina Vinegar and Pork Sauce. They were both...ehh. Potato salad was your solid mustard base. The slaw needed a little more dicing for my taste but it was the mayo-vinegar style. I added the Carolina Vinegar BBQ sauce to up the flavor. Sweet tea was superb and refreshing. I want to come back when they are offering their full menu. They were actually pretty nice guys too even though I was wearing a Bama hat haha! read more

They have pretty much every BBQ sauce you can think of. They serve beer and other beverages in the restaurant. You order in a line and take your food to your table. They have a large outside patio and courtyard with cornhole, a bar in a small separate building, and an event venue where I've attended a wedding party. I'd recommend this place all around. I met a colleague here for lunch yesterday and neither of us was very impressed. The employees were friendly and service was quick. The price was basically in line with most other barbeque places. The food wasn't impressive. I got pulled pork, which was flavorless without some kind of sauce. There are plenty of sauces offered, but the few that I tried weren't much better than what can be purchased at a store. The mac & cheese and Brunswick stew that I had as sides weren't especially good. The mac & cheese was bland and the cheese was rubbery. The stew was oddly sweet. As I told my colleague, it was so sweet that it could have been eaten as a dessert. The music in the restaurant was incredibly loud, as well, which made having a conversation difficult. Maybe we caught Saucehouse on a bad day, but neither my colleague nor I were inclined to visit again. read more

Saucehouse is such a solid spot all around for great food and great drinks!! They really do have so many yummy sauces that I love to try a new one each time I go, too. The indoor/outdoor atmosphere is perfect for any event at any time of year, whether hanging out with a big group outside with some live music and the firepit, sitting inside around the bar, or in the main dining area to grab a bite to eat. After my first review, Saucehouse BBQ reached out and gave me a gift certificate to try them again, and I finally had the opportunity to try out Saucehouse BBQ again this past Sunday evening. I will say this, in terms of cleanliness, it was night and day. MUCH cleaner and neater than when I went in a few months ago. Still, I have some ideas as to why it was so gross a few months ago, and I think Saucehouse BBQ management can avoid this (more later). When I entered the establishment this time, it was pretty empty. Once again, the staff was incredibly friendly. I ordered the following: -Ribs -Pulled pork -Brunswick stew -Collard greens -Coleslaw -Mac'n'cheese -Bread pudding -Peach cobbler -Vessel: 2 baked potatoes, loaded with cheese, jalapenos, salsa, onion The meats were pretty good. I preferred the pulled pork, my partner preferred the ribs. I do think my ribs are better, and I though these ribs needed a LITTLE more flavor and moisture. This may just be bias on my part :) In terms of the sides, they did forget to give me my collard greens, but everything else was pretty good! The mac'n'cheese, which was a huge disappointment last time I went, was still, honestly, kind of grainy, but it was much more flavorful and creamier than I remember. The Brunswick stew was also better than I expected it to be. The coleslaw was pretty standard, but pretty good! The desserts were amazing! They may be a little too sweet for those who aren't huge fans of sweet things, but that bread pudding is reason enough to go to Saucehouse. Very decadent and rich! The peach cobbler was also delicious, but I do prefer my pies a LITTLE less sweet. Still, I can see a lot of people loving this! As for the cleanliness issue, I ordered my food, and was given cups for takeout. I went to the area to get drinks, so I was holding a huge bag of food and 2 cups. Then, I went to the sauce area to get sauces, and there are quite a few (10+), and they are pretty good! They have little to-go cups for these sauces, but it is VERY difficult to get the tops to snap onto the little containers. I was making such a mess trying to get the lids to "click," and it hit me -- this was definitely the cause of the greasiness/stickiness in my previous visit! I went and got a wet paper towel to wipe down the bottles and the sauce container, and then I washed my hands. I highly, highly recommend you spend the extra money for better quality mini-containers. Greasiness/stickiness was such a put-off With all the food mentioned along with the massive baked potato, my partner couldn't finish all the food! The portion sizes are massive! I have to say the House barbecue sauce is really decent. And I am really picky about my sauces. I am also picky about my sliced brisket. They have sliced brisket or at least that's what they call it. It is more like pull a part brisket and what they serve me was so fatty that I sent it back. Definitely not sliced brisket. Mac & cheese was too dry . But get extra points for actually having baked potatoes. Unfortunately they go up on some kind of cheese sauce, the same cheese sauce they use on their nachos and I could definitely take a pass on that. Asked for butter and you get The fake drawn butter oil. Epic fail on that one don't be cheap serve real butter. The side salad was excellent, super fresh lettuce. And they're shining moment is there tofu!! Prepared excellent would come back just for that alone and I don't even eat tofu often. In the World of Coca-Cola here in Georgia they serve Pepsi , bummer. Stopped here on a football bye-week for a Saturday lunch. The atmosphere here is really neat, with a courtyard and stage outside with an adjoining bar building. Wife and I shared a pound of brisket and some sides. Honestly, the sides (beans, cole slaw, potato salad) were forgettable. But the brisket is another story. The flavor was full, the meat was juicy and tender. My wife and I agree that this is close to the best brisket we've eaten in our history. Five stars for the brisket. In my experience, Saucehouse has decent barbecue, quick service, and is well-priced. I wouldn't say it's the best barbecue spot in Athens, but it's one of the better ones. As an added bonus, they give out free desserts on rainy days! Meats: I've had their pulled pork and ribs. Both were okay. They would benefit from more seasoning and a deeper penetrating smokey flavor. The pulled pork was tender and flavorful but a touch on the lean side. I definitely wanted more moisture and maybe even fat content. On the other hand, the ribs were plenty juicy but a little tough. You'll definitely need a knife to separate them from one another. I love ribs, but I would definitely pick pulled pork out of the two options. Sides: I've had their green beans, fried okra, baked beans, mac and cheese, and Brunswick stew. Their mac and cheese was pretty decent; well seasoned and delicious. Their Brunswick stew had big chunks of potato, which I'm not used to, but was decently flavorful as well. When the fried okra was hot, it tasted great, but as it cooled, it became less desirable. I did not like the baked beans at all. They were pretty bland and disappointing. The green beans also tasted like they were not seasoned at all. After two bites, I added salt and pepper. Deserts: I tried their peach cobbler and bread pudding. Their peach cobbler was alright. It was a little less sweet than I expected and the texture was a little less velvety than I'm used to, but it overall wasn't bad. On the complete other end of the spectrum, their bread pudding was amazing. I've had bread pudding maybe once or twice before in my life, but never like that. It was buttery, soft, sweet, and so worth it. Sauces: They're not called Saucehouse for no reason! They have about 10 different types of barbecue sauces. I tried 6, most of which I enjoyed. Mustard Sauce I've hated mustard sauce all my life, but absolutely loved theirs. Pork Sauce Their pork sauce is vinegar based but not insanely acidic. It was pretty good on pulled pork, not the best on their ribs though. Very Hot and Sweet This one was a little too sweet for my taste, but that should have been expected given the name. Hot Vinegar Sauce It tasted like spicy apple cider vinegar; very good on their pulled pork. (Alabama) White Sauce It had a very loose viscosity and strong horseradish flavor. Not bad, but not good either. House Sauce This was a balanced ketchup-based sauce. This one tied with their mustard sauce as my favorite. Service: Sort of like Willy's or Chipotle, Saucehouse provides a fast-casual style of service. I told them everything I wanted up front, but I don't think they would have minded if I figured everything out along the way. This style of service keeps lines short and minimizes your waiting time. Conclusion: Like I said in the beginning, Saucehouse has pretty decent barbecue. I wouldn't travel from out of town to try it, but if you live in the area, I'd definitely recommend you stop by.
