We were in need of fence replacement and I got this name from a neighbor down the road whose fence looked how we want ours to be. We had one price and wanted to have a second. As you can see in this text, Saul was incredibly rude. When we called via an interpreter, he stated he would need to move the dirt from a plantar box that was touching the fence. I explained we would do that, not him. Just one less thing for him to worry about as we would take care of it. Seems that wasn't clear to him and he didn't have the total estimate ready, other than to say $80/foot. We told him his price was more than what is comparable for the area, his quote was over $1k more than our first quote. He hung up on us and then texted "80x 78 = 6240 I'm glad you don't want it, it's a nightmare dealing with people like you guys" Let me be very clear, we have never met this person and do not wish to. Thank you so much Saul, for showing me what poor workmanship looks like. Thank you for showing me how terrible customer service can be. Loved reading the other reviews, you guys nailed it. Saul built on our property line, nice fence. One third of the posts failed within 5 years. I reached out to the rear fence neighbor (they handled hiring him) and got his number. He showed up begrudgingly, refused to even look at the posts. Although, he strutted around pushing on the posts and agreeing many had failed. He would not even look at the concrete work that the posts were in. Insisted the problem was us spraying sprinklers on the posts. No dude, no sprinklers. What did happen is that the workers did not place a concrete dome around the posts, allowing water to shed away. We excavated one of the posts and the concrete cracked easily when hit with a shovel. Poorly mixed concrete, poor hole digging, poor water doming. This guy was rude, dismissive and condescending. Although, he wasted no time trying to sell me on hiring him to fix his crappy work. No thanks guy. Makes me appreciate the fence company I have been using for 25 years. Fences and FENCE POSTS should last a minimum of 15 years if not longer. Saul returned with his crew to build a front porch at my house and he once again exceeded my expectations! He built it how I wanted it but had great suggestions and ideas that I actually decided to go with. He is so creative and flexible. My redwood front porch turned out beautiful and with great finishing work like rounded edges, diagonal corners and all sanded down smooth. He and his crew even helped me preserve a beautiful climbing plant by making a special entry into the deck for it so that I didn't have to pull it out. He came right when he said he would be there and they were finished in 2 days. They got to the job early each day and worked hard all day. He is very easy to talk to and easy going. Avoid Saul at all costs. He extremely unprofessional and has been nothing but a nightmare to communicate with. I understand he's slow to respond when he's working but days or weeks go by and he either won't respond or forgets/changes things. Our project originally priced out below $2000 and he informed us the project was too small for him. Understandable in this economy. So we agreed to fix an additional gate to meet his minimum and agreed on a total project that would cost about $2500. However, he said he was too busy and we'd have to wait a month or two. The night before he was finally supposed to do the work he called to confirm and informed me that we have to pay as soon as the work is done, "not one week later, not 1 day later." It was a little odd but I said sure no problem and wanted him to reconfirm the estimate. That's when I realized he was still adding yet another section of the fence that was not approved by insurance that we had both agreed via text and email he wouldn't be fixing. At this point, he refused to do any of the work unless we fixed the new addition, which would bring the project to over $3000. Better call Saul! I went back and forth about putting a fence on our property line. I had at least five different contractors come out for estimates, and the most professional, detailed oriented, and reasonably priced (by far) one was Saul. I finally decided to put the fence in at the end of July, and Saul worked with me so we could stay under budget, but still get all that we wanted. He did the fence and an arbor in two days. We had to put a deadline on him because we were having a party and didn't want the old ugly fence up for the occasion, and he finished the job just on time as promised. Saul is such a pleasant person to work with. He never seemed annoyed when I changed my mind. He came out multiple times so I can show him things I wanted to add. Even talking to him on a personal level was great, he is just a cool guy overall! I had such a great feeling about Saul, and I am glad I chose him. As for the fence and arbor...it looks great, it is very sturdy, and we are incredibly happy with the final result! A couple of serious concerns. I called Saul and he came out promptly to give me a free estimate. I was emailed the formal estimates a couple of days later and they totalled over $5000. I called him and told him to go ahead with the work. He said ok. A week passed and no word. So I sent two emails to him, each a week apart with his own estimates attached asking for him to contact me. This is the third week and nothing. So I get a little suspicious and check on his business license number that was on his preprinted estimate forms. --It doesn't exist.-- No, not expired. That license number doesn't exist --- I've gone with another outfit now. Roughly same price and definitely confirmed the license for the new contractor is valid and on file. On a personal note: Saul himself is very polite and charismatic. A nice guy. His estimate for the work was in the same ballpark as the others that I've gotten so his prices are not out of line. I called him based on the 4 positive reviews here. But from what I've learned now, the previous reviewers have had work done by what seems to be an unlicensed contractor. Dont take my word for it. My mother's friend referred Saul. We called and he and his son showed up within a few hours. Like all of the other reviews said, he is a very cool and calm guy. He measured out the areas and answered all of the questions patiently. He said he was so busy that he would not be able to start for 2 months from the day he visited. I said I understand and then he said he would give me an estimate later that night via email. Because he seemed so professional, I was very disappointed to not hear back from him at all. Then I started getting suspicious and decided to check on Yelp and it was exactly as Ed B. researched, Saul's license number on his business card cannot be found on the California State License Board (CSLB). So I'm a picky person. I like things "just right" and Saul Fencing brought their game face on. I can't recommend this guy highly enough. Saul was an absolute pleasure to work with. So here is MY experience.... My parents asked me to research some fencing contractors for a fence because we were changing up the iron fence for wood. I called around and asked for a few quotes from various contractors in the area. It can turn into a stressful project when you know NOTHING...ZIP...ZILCH...NADA about wood. A few streets away, I noticed a Beeeauuuutiful fence on my drive towards my parents house and figured, what the heck? I stopped and asked for their fence guy's contact info & VOILA! I asked for three quotes, all based on various options, and got a very timely response, and any additional work was clearly spelled-out up front. The quote was very streamlined, and easy to understand. The pricing on all three quotes were extremely reasonable. Not once did he try to up-sell me on any other services or features I didn't need. Most important he took the time to EDUCATE me on the different options. Saul showed up on time, put up a beautiful fence and he charged me what he said he would. He confirmed with me all the details BEFORE he started on the project. That is a HUGE plus! The quality of work is top notch: the fence is completely level, sturdy as can be and looks terrific. They made sure to set up the fence so it would prop up and reinforce our neighbor's fence which was leaning into our yard, all at no additional cost. I called Saul for a quote, they came to the property, measured the area and told me to wait a few days for a quote. Since I didn't hear back after a week, I gave them a call to see what happened. They said we "accepted a big job last week somewhere else with lots of profit so we didn't have time to respond or do your job". I would NEVER hire him or refer him to any of my friends. He seem very professional at first. When his worker was working on one of my gate, he says there is a leak in my Splinkler pipe near there. As a previous reviewer had stated that his worker had broken so many things in her backyard, I wasn't sure if his worker had broken this pipe when he was digging or it was leaking previously. In any case, we ask him to help fix it and we would pay him. After speaking to saul, he agreed that he would only charge for parts to fix this , which actually ended up to be the same amount that I was able to hire someone else to fix for part and labor. We agreed and I paid him for this amount. As this is during the raining season, we didn't use our Splinkker. The first time we turned on the sprinklers again, the same area he had fix is leaking AND the splinklers all along on the side fence where he had installed our new fence is leaking/not working. When I called him to ask him to come and fix as it's leaking where he had fixed it, he got very unprofessional and said that he is not responsible for that as he didn't charged me for labor but just for parts . Well I told him even if that was true, the leak that he was suppose to have fixed with the part I paid him for is not fix. He got angry and yelled at me and told me never to call him again. Also for the sprinklers that don't work now on the side of the house where he had installed my new fence, I had told him it was working right before he had installed the new fence and the Splinkler pipes is leaking right after, he again said that is not his responsibility as he doesn't think he is the one who damaged it even though the problem happened right after he installed the new fence. Now I have to pay someone to fix something that was previously working before he replaced the side fence and pay additional for someone to refix the leak at the gate where I had paid him already to fix!!! Also I left him a message about this issue and he yelled and got upset at me for calling him early on his day off on Sunday. First of all, I don't remember his business hours of operations and he only had one number listed to his business. I figure i would call and if didn't get a hold of him , I would Just leave a message for him to call me back when his business is open. I didn't realize that was his cell phone number and if he didn't want to get calls or voicemails during his day off then don't only list his cell number for his business or don't check voicemail or answer the phone on his day off!!!! So unprofessional in his behavior with such poor customer service. I would NEVER hire him again !!! but if you do hire him, make sure everything is working before paying him as he will not take responsibility for it. read more

When my neighbor asked me to find a contractor to replace our old disintegrating wood fence, I looked through my files and found the business card for Saul Fencing. I had engaged Saul earlier in 2006 and 2007 to replace the fences I share with the other two neighbors and remembered that he had done a fine job then. My neighbor and I had delayed any repair on this third side of the fence because there are water drainage pipes running underground that we were afraid might get damaged. But we could not delay any more because the fence was falling apart. We discussed this with Saul and he explained how he would take care to protect the pipes. It meant laboriously digging holes for the fence posts by hand instead of a power drill. We agreed to engage him. Saul brought an assistant with him on the scheduled day, and we saw that the work was indeed more laborious. But he saved the pipes and built a fine new fence in one day. Later, I asked for some additional repair and finishing touches not included in the contract. He came back another day and did that too. Needless to say, I am a happy customer. Third time. read more

Saul just finished building a new replacement gate for our side yard. Previously he had replaced a 30' section of 6' redwood fence. He does excellent work. We have had several new fences over the last 40 years and his work and materials are superior to all. instead of the usual 5/8" planks, he uses 7/8". Saul did a fantastic job on our new fence and deck. The fence is redwood, beautiful! And also the deck. I love everything about it! It's a very beautiful deck, more than I expected. There was one some-ish problem. Saul did ask me what color sheets for the roof that I wanted. He mentioned grey, I thought it would look very nice. What he did tell me was they were see-through grey. The day he was going to install, I told him that my husband and I were really unsure about them. He told me it would be a waste of his time. Now I have a deck but can't enjoy it. The sun is much to bright. And also the Suns heat. So now we have to redo the roofing ourselves and an additional $600.00 He also was to build a Pergola, after the deck. But he left and said goodbye, so no Pergola. UPDATE....Well it turns out it was$1,100.00 we had to spend because getting the sheets and a lot of work for my husband and I, but he didn't care we didn't like it. Saul installed over 100 feet of fence for our rental in San Jose and two neighbors. The neighbors got the quotes, i agreed to their choice. When i met with Saul to pay him and inspect the job, i was very happy. It was done on time as promised and i saw details completed that he could have skipped...for instance, he put in mid-span supports, set in concrete. Second, he stapled each fence board where they overlapped. No one may have noticed/complained if those steps had been skipped. I noticed and it indicates quality work.
