Dr. Saul Marcus is a true healer. I lost trust in conventional medicine years ago and have largely relied on holistic practitioners ever since, including naturopaths and Traditional Chinese Medicine doctors. I had been searching for a new naturopath closer to home and came across Dr. Marcus after finding his website and resonating with his philosophy and approach to health. Another thing that intrigued me was that he incorporates kinesiology (muscle testing) into his practice--a technique that uses the body's muscle responses to help identify imbalances, sensitivities, and areas that may need support. I had recently heard about muscle testing and was curious to try it, but had never seen it offered by another naturopath before. What stood out to me most is that he takes a truly integrative approach to healing. Rather than focusing on symptoms alone or relying heavily on supplements, he considers the whole person, including diet, emotional factors, lifestyle, and even Ayurvedic principles. I appreciate that he focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause rather than piling on supplement after supplement or ordering a bunch of costly lab tests (we've spent THOUSANDS on them with the previous ND). He's also an herbalist and homeopath, both modalities that my body has responded well to in the past. For as long as I can remember, I've struggled with chronic stomach aches. Over the years I've tried countless approaches--specialized diets, food eliminations, acupuncture, tinctures, supplements, topical remedies, aromatherapy, and more. Some things provided temporary relief, but nothing created lasting change. I actually arrived at Dr. Marcus's office with a stomach ache and left without one. When I first started seeing Dr. Marcus I felt he was caring and wanted to help me with several issues I was dealing with. Anxiety, sleep, chronic fatigue, chronic constipation, low thyroid, and hot flashes were some. Several times I felt he was frustrated and was giving up on me, as he would not answer a text message for a few days. I needed to ask questions or tell him how I was doing. I started to feel hopeless and depressed from the lack of communication and support. I lost count of the several herbs and supplements I have tried in the past eight months that have not worked. Dr. Marcus said he could mail me supplements when I was about to run out. I gave him at least one week notice or more. He would forget what supplements I asked him for, and many times there was at least one supplement missing. Many times I ran out of supplements. Once he mailed me another patient's tincture that he asked me to bring back to him. The tincture that was meant for me went to another patient unsealed and he gave that same tincture to me at our next appt. I was also mailed a probiotic (that needed to stay on ice), but he never bothered to tell me it was shipped. The package was in the lobby of my building for three days before I received it. I was told to try oxy-powder for constipation. I told him it was giving me diarrhea and he said that should not be happening. I dealt with this for two weeks and most likely got a UTI because of this, and although I brought it up to him a few more times he said nothing. I also had to purchase supplements to treat the UTI. I had to tell him I cannot deal with this anymore please give me something else to try. I should not have to repeat myself so many times till I am finally heard. He has told me several times I should be fasting and I should be doing cardio. I have repeatedly told him that I have been fasting 16 hrs. every day. I also went from lying in bed all day for the past 9 1/2 yrs. to pushing myself to do strength training and cardio at physical therapy for 1 1/2 hrs. 2x a week. I told him many times that if I take the same supplements for sleep every day I could build up a tolerance. After eight months he is now telling me I could be building a tolerance to one of the three supplements I am currently taking, and that I should come in to be muscle tested. Mind you, I just saw him two weeks prior for two hours and he did muscle testing. I was also taking medication to help me sleep along with the three supplements. My goal was not to take medication. Dr. Marcus could not remember our conversations and was making too many mistakes that I overlooked. When I brought this to his attention there was no accountability, just excuses. Several hundred dollars later I finally had to tell him I needed to seek treatment elsewhere. Unlike a general physician, a Naturopathic Dr. treats your body and mind. They should have the patience and take the time to listen to issues, concerns, and situations that you are dealing with. I do not feel Dr. Marcus has the patience to listen for too long as he would cut me off while I was speaking. He doesn't explain himself well and yet I needed to be patient with him. I'm thoroughly impressed. And I'm DIFFICULT TO IMPRESS. BACKGROUND. About a year ago, seemingly out of the blue, I was diagnosed with chronic constipation. Tests were run for celiac's, hyperthyroidism, and ultrasounds, MRIs and a colonoscopy were performed. The diagnosis, CIC, and we don't know why so take Miralax for the rest of your life. Over $3,000 spent on procedures, doc's appts, and at least $1000 more on hordes of supplements attempting to help my condition and try to get to the bottom of what traditional doctors (GASTROENTEROLOGISTS, for which this is their SPECIALTY, mind you) could not. I also tried elimination dieting, eat this, not thats, with 0 results. After many bouts of depression, thinking this was now my new fate and no one could help, someone recommended I see a naturopath or functional medicine doctor. I did my Yelp review homework and emailed around and came to the general conclusion that most functional medicine docs (whom are NOT covered by insurance) are crooks just like real docs. The bulk of them put you on the same diet (no sugar, gluten, dairy, because apparently this fixes everything in life) and load you up on their own supplements (believe me, I've TRIED THEM ALL ALREADY ON MY OWN DIME). And their rates are astronomical. Two separate functional MDs quoted their initial visit would be $700-800, with each subsequent visit being $300. Not including the supplements. This only solidified my "Lord, I hate doctors" mentality. END LONG A** BACKGROUND. Back to Saul. A doctor I CAN'T hate. In TWO, $100 visits, he has done what NONE of the other gastros could and put me on the road to recovery. If you have CIC you know you're always cautious that something will work, then stop working. But believe me, he goes the extra mile to try and figure out what's going on. The appointments are long, thorough, and NEVER rushed. He uses what I call "voodoo" kinesiology, because if you've never done it before, you'll be like wtf?? But it WORKS, and he figures out what weakens and strengthens your body, so that he can give you supplements that are actually tailored specifically for YOU. After the first visit he sent me home to procure saliva and stool samples (of which I nerve-wrackingly looked up suggestions on how to "collect") to mail out to labs. When they all came back negative, I went back for a second visit. After more of the voodoo, and his personal opinion that my perpetual bunged-up-ness was likely due to emotional trauma (i'd had a VERY bad breakup with a narcissist close to the time this condition began), I left with a mere $20 worth of tailored supplements and the VERY NEXT DAY the difference was DRAMATIC and I knew it was his stuff. It has now been over a month since my second visit and I have been feeling the most normal I have felt since this whole yearlong ordeal started. I'd almost forgotten what NORMAL FELT LIKE. I no longer fear what i'm eating. My current Miralax dose is next to NOTHING now and I've abandoned daily usage of the other 25 bottles of stuff ordered from Amazon before (how will I ever get rid of it all??). I feel amazing. I've even been exploring positive affirmations to release negative emotion in my body since he believes I'm holding emotional tension in my gut. And I believe him because I know damn well i'm a grudge-holder and have been letting go of some stuff I've held for YEARS. I will use his tinctures to the very last drop and see if I still need them after (hopefully I don't but I'm happy to use them for as LONG AS NECESSARY if I need to), and I won't hesitate to visit him again for anything! I am still in awe that his technique is fixing what the experts couldn't and that I SPENT ALL THAT MONEY BEFOREHAND INSTEAD OF JUST GOING TO HIM IN THE FIRST PLACE! If you have a chronic condition and you've tried a lot of stuff already, and been disappointed with conventional medicine, go here and get some affordable healing from someone who actually wants you to help you more than taking your dollars and sending you on your way. Dr. Marcus is one of those rare finds--a doctor who genuinely wants to help and will take his time doing it. His schedule is never jam packed with patients so that no one ever feels rushed when seeing him. He possesses a great deal of patience as he goes through a number of questions and testing. He will consult his various reference manuals to dig further into what your condition or best course of treatment should be. Dr. Marcus' rates are very very reasonable, and he always tries to treat conservatively in testing and supplement expense. He also corresponds via email, which is helpful when asking questions or getting clarifications. He also offers a free initial 20 minute consultation, where he will discuss possible issues and course of treatments he will try. If this is your first time visiting a Naturopathic Doctor, I highly recommend you come with an open mind. There will be thorough questioning and testing that differ from traditional Medical Doctors but will address root problems rather than just treating the symptom. Sometimes what is recommended seems non-traditional (e.g. taking a supplement you may have never heard of), but the amazing thing is that it works! Overall, Dr. Marcus is a quiet individual but it is obvious that he is caring and knowledgeable. I always leave feeling very good about the appointment I just had. So helpful, I'm just starting my treatment today & overall first impressions were great. So knowledgeable & caring definitely a breath of fresh air to visit. Update! Almost 2 weeks after my initial appointment & taking my recommended treatment/ supplements. I feel so much better already. I went into Dr. Saul feeling very anxious after a recent visit to a regular doctor that told me to take antihistamines for a rash & food allergies that suddenly appeared after a treatment by them. It turned out the treatment I had with the conventional doctor triggered extreme inflammation in my body giving me hives, anxiety, tightness in my chest everytime I ate. He told me I should avoid eating certain things and what he said had matched my test that I had done with another doctor so It intrigued me. Since then, I make sure to ask him about all new supplements I want to take and see if they will work for my body chemistry. I was recently diagnosed with Lyme with no energy and major body aches. After a round of antibiotics I sought Dr. Marcus expertise in healing the natural way through herbs, supplements and tinctures. Doctor Marcus is an Angel. Contrary to many regular doctors who just see you as a number or an insurance policy and who just throw medication at you to mask your symptoms, Dr Marcus truly has passion for what he does and has your best interest in mind.
