Good theme, courteous staff; menu was unique and loved the variety. My glass noodles were flavorful and well done. The reason it was a 4 star and not 5 for me is because I think they were microwaving food, which affected the freshness of the food, as there was just one person doing all the tasks- taking orders, billing and cooking!

With the whole "New Year, New Me" movement that occurs at the beginning of each year, an article along the lines of "Must Try Plant Based Restaurants of Calgary" recently came out. SaVeg was featured and their Korean inspired cuisine is what piqued my interest. I find Asian vegetarian or vegan dishes to be more adventurous, flavourful but most importantly filling. For lunch I went with the japchae glass noodles with pan fried dumplings. Mixed in the noodles were colorful veggies of spinach, carrots, peppers and onions, ribbons of tofu and sesame seeds sprinkled on top. The star of this dish were the dumplings. I ate one and immediately pried open a second one to see what was inside because I swear it tasted like pork! With the delish food and reasonable pricing, I can't wait to head back to SaVeg again!

Awesome. A must, even if you are not Vegan! The Tuna Poke bowl and bibimbap was very good!! The no eggs Benedict... the sauce makes it. Presentation and flavors were all above expectations.

We came here with a couple of friends of ours whom we had come to Calgary to visit. The closest thing they have here to our beloved Vegan Croissant Breakfast sandwich is a Vegan Ham & Cheese Croissant. When I looked at it, it really wasn't jumping out at me. There were two other breakfast sandwich alternatives here and both of them were sandwiched between bagels rather than croissants. I prefer croissants but I do also like bagels and I don't eat bagels very often so I opted for the EBC which had vegan egg, bacon and cheese in it. This was pretty good. I especially enjoyed the taste of the vegan bacon in it. My daughter had the vegan Spinach Ricotta roll. I took a bite of it. Very impressed. Warm, flaky and it very much reminded me of Spanakopita. I think I'd order this for myself if I ever come back here again. For drinks we had Mango Matcha and Ube Chai. My Ube Chai came with some kind of Cinnamon flavored vegan whipping cream on top. I enjoyed my drink but didn't really taste much Ube in it. Mostly I tasted Cinnamon from the whipping cream. There was this big blue Cookie Monster cookie that was giving Cookie Monster Vibes. I bought one of these for us to share with our friends. Not bad, but not outstanding. I love the charming and relaxing atmosphere at this cafe. We had a nice, big round table all to ourselves. It's a cozy place and much easier to get a seat than To Live For Bakery which has lineups out the door everyday. Food here was pretty good. Not as good as To Live For, and they don't seem like they have regular features like To Live For's cube croissant which changes flavor about once a month and draws in crowds of people, and probably gets a ton of views on Instagram; however, the food here is still very good. A great neighbourhood place for vegans or non vegans interested in exploring plant based food.

UPDATE: Ownership's response relies on vague phrasing about "context" and "communication dynamics"…read moreto subtly imply we were difficult. Again, that was never once communicated to us in any way, and had it been, we gladly would have apologized and adjusted to their standards. I never realized that politely requesting items, using industry-standard terms like "may I," and praising both the FOH and kitchen staff for accommodating us each and every time was an issue. I want to reiterate: the only dynamic was us being loyal regulars for years, attempting to give polite, private feedback about a drop in service, and immediately receiving a lifetime ban over text. They have now confirmed that even our offer to order delivery with zero modifications is denied. That is the entire context. I am content to let my review stand, be posted in other locations with a reference to here, and Calgary diners can judge this level of "professionalism" for themselves. Original Post: I genuinely dislike posting negative reviews and have never wanted to hurt a local business, but it is extremely important to warn Calgary patrons about how this restaurant treats its customers--especially those who require menu modifications. We have been loyal customers of Vegan Street for years, frequently navigating a gluten-free lifestyle by requesting modifications. We have dined here during peak weekend rushes, slower afternoons, ordered takeout, and regularly made reservations. Through every interaction, not once did any staff member communicate that our requests were an issue. Furthermore, we always went out of our way to be excellent guests: we are polite, our kids use their best manners, and we even clean up our table and stack our dishes to make things easier for the servers. We constantly told the staff how much we valued Vegan Street as dedicated Vegan restaurants with gluten free options are rare. Everything changed for us when I tried to politely address a sudden drop in customer service. After experiencing poor service and staff rolling their eyes at us during recent visits, I asked to speak privately to one of the owners. I did this quietly at the restaurant, away from other patrons and in good faith. I shared how much we love supporting them and I explained that I understood people have bad days, but felt ownership should be aware of the interactions. Instead of taking the feedback professionally, the owner sent us a text message a few hours later--which we can happily post to prove our position. She claimed my feedback "matched" a negative online review (which wasn't mine) and falsely blamed me for it. She then stated that our dietary modification requests over the past few months have "been too much on the staff and kitchen" and told us we are no longer welcome moving forward. When we pointed out that absolutely no one had ever communicated that our requests were a problem, she actually agreed with us. Yet, she doubled down anyway, jumping straight from zero communication to a lifetime ban. We explained that had we'd been told our requests were an issue, we gladly would have adjusted--such as taking things off our food ourselves or asking for sides. Acting as our own sous chefs while paying full price is a reasonable compromise before resorting to a ban. Unfortunately, this was never requested. Wanting to find a way forward, we even politely asked if we could still order delivery with absolutely zero modifications. She never responded. Bottom line: To ban multi-year, respectful regulars over text because ownership cannot handle private feedback--and to admit they never once told the customer there was an issue beforehand--is a shocking lack of professionalism and business ethics. Any public reply from the owner(s) to this review that is anything less than a genuine apology and an immediate reversal of the ban should be viewed as nothing more than a desperate attempt to save face. While we may never return given how the ownership acts, other patrons deserve to be aware. Perhaps a zero-modifications policy should be implemented instead of treating customers like they are the problem. If you have celiac disease, severe allergies, or dietary restrictions, be warned: asking for a menu modification here is a gamble. Apparently, you should just order something else or be prepared to act as a sous chef at your own table. Owners and staff alike may silently resent your requests for years, only to ban you without warning the moment you ask for basic customer service. Also, although most are friendly, the staff and owners here can apparently treat you any way they want, and if you say anything, be prepared to be asked to never come back. We happily supported this business for years, but they clearly do not value loyalty, dietary needs, professionalism, or basic communication. Save your money and support a local establishment that actually treats people with respect.

This was before nice little internet sources like Yelp would tell me where to go, so I would go seeking these places based on word of mouth from friends of friends. Fast forward to 2012, and Heart's Choice opens up in the CALGARY FARMERS MARKET, which is basically the equivalent to a yuppy farmers market shopping mall. This is a pretty neat little place, and they do all the work for you, so you don't even have to season the fake meats yourself. Thaw, throw it in a pan with some veggies, and you have yourself some classy Chinese/Thai inspired food. They even make some pretty bomb curries that you can buy frozen if you're too lazy to make yer own. Yay! No hard labor in the kitchen, and no animal suffering! While I was a little irritated at the SURPRISE of patrons, that they could possibly be enjoying something NOT made out of a corpse (hi, it's 2012 you cavemen creeps), I am really happy to see Heart's Choice thrive. The owner and I had a nice chat about the struggles of following a vegetarian diet sometimes in Calgary, and I congratulated her on these awesome products which are winning the hearts of even non-vegetarians. I myself went home with her two recommendations, some ginger "chicken", and black pepper "beef" steaks that I plan to throw into a wok with some Shanghai noodles, carrots, bok choy, and broccoli. Also, Le's Vietnamese Subs a few rows down makes a killer vegan kungpao chicken sub with some of the proteins sold at Heart's Choice. *Review 9/30 for Yelp's 30 day challenge 2012
