Getting new tires in Athens the other week, I (sadly) noticed an obituary on their bulletin board for Cheryl Prince Sendowski who owned the coffee shoppe from 1998 until it was sold in 2013. This was one spot my Birthday Club group met at in the late 80s and early 90s. We enjoyed their simplistic sandwiches and iced teas. I'm not a coffee snob by any stretch, and their coffee doesn't evoke great memories for me; however, I do recall it being "fair trade," even back then. The sandwiches were good, the place was nice to relax in, and the back patio was even more eclectic with various statuary and just "stuff" hanging from the fence. Sandwiches were nothing you can't make at home, but they were good, edible, quick and filling! The community bulletin board was always clustered with fliers and business cards for music lessons, missing pets, and pressure washers. It's a local's place for locals and had one regular, Mike Maples who was conferred with the title "Mayor" of Ole Town Coffee. The gazebo out front is quaint to sit in. Do know parking is tight. There aren't many spaces out front to park. I think the back alley may have some spots. For a slice of Huntsville, I would recommend visiting OTC!

I ended up ordering a bagel with strawberry cream cheese and a plain latte with oat milk. The strawberry cream cheese was served in a plastic container, and seemed different from store bought cream cheese. It had a date of 1-12, but still seemed weirdly dried on the outside. Anyways, the bagel was good. The latte was just okay. Nothing special. Not sure if people order any different drinks while they're here, but I'm definitely tempted to come back and try some of the teas they have.

Rather than beginning the drinks, one barista continued taking everyone's orders before anything was made. There were two baristas visible the entire time, but the second didn't start making drinks until the first had finished taking the full line of orders. It made the wait much longer than it seemed necessary. To make matters worse, my matcha wasn't mixed properly--it was full of chunks, I included a picture, making it unpleasant to drink. After waiting that long, I expected much better. Unfortunately, this hasn't been a one-time experience. Every visit seems to involve an unusually long wait for a drink that's average at best. It's especially disappointing because when this location first opened, the drinks and service were consistently good. The biggest issue isn't just the coffee, it's the attitude behind it. Their espresso and drinks often have a bitter, almost burnt taste that doesn't line up with what you'd expect from "fresh espresso." Many people -- myself included -- have noticed this and given feedback, but instead of addressing it or offering to remake a drink, the response tends to be dismissive. They often say, "That's how our espresso tastes," as if that ends the conversation. But anyone who's had truly fresh espresso knows that's not how it should taste. What's frustrating is that this isn't a one-time issue. There are many similar reviews online mentioning the same problems -- both with the taste of the drinks and the customer service. When so many people are saying the same thing, it's a sign that something needs to change. But instead of trying to fix the problem, it feels like Mudslinger's has chosen to ignore it. The Lowe Mill is a historic building with prehistoric pipes that are filled with rust and lord only knows what other contaminants, so they can't offer you any tap water to drink. That's not their fault, but it's a bummer having to pay for water. - No outdoor seating because they're located inside the Lowe Mill. - Paper cups My husband and I frequent the Lowe Mill quite a lot and we love popping in for a coffee or tea. This isn't my go-to place for eats, so I can't rank them higher, but they do offer a really good tea service if you book a reservation in advance. They have the best ambiance of any coffee shop in town. They're worth checking out just for the atmosphere alone.
