I never knew this was here, and I've lived in Ravenswood for over a decade. It was handy, though, since I found when stopping by The Chopping Block that TCB is closed for renovations, and I needed some smoky paprika. It smells delicious in here since there are of course so many spices around. I found what I needed relatively easily, and I like that they have them in different sizes as well as in small ziplock servings. Sometimes you just don' need 8 oz of Italian seasoning, you know? I'd visit again if I am on the lookout for a spice, particularly one that is tricky to find at Mariano's or Jewel. read more

I happened to be in the area and was in need of some spices. I entered the store. The worker really didn't greet me and I eventually approached him. He assisted me when I asked but really did not go out of his way to welcome me to the store. The store is nicely designed and heaven for those into spices. They have spices in several sizes and you can make a request if you don't see the size you want. I was able to find most of what I was looking for during my visit. I had a recipe with specific spices needed. I joined the rewards program. I was excited about the ghost pepper purchase which was the one spice that was not on my list. I will be back for the spices. Also they do not have a bathroom. I think any place that is consumer based should have a bathroom. read more

If you are low key trying to spice shop, Savory Spice Shop is for you! I found this gem during the Lincoln Square Ravenswood Apple Fest. I have been to Spice Shops with thousands and thousands of inventory, which made my experience overwhelming. Savory Spice has all the basics mixed with great customer service. I noticed a lot of spice blends from Colorado. My favorite was the Hickory spice blend. It smelled savory and perfect for any barbecue. Also worth mentioning are the curries and soup selection here. We purchased the Pikes Peak Butcher's Rub (salt and pepper based rub- garlicky, bittersweet, herbal- perfect for poultry, pork chops, ground beef, and burgers! Prices are average with other spice shops. Since we came during the Apple Fest, they also had samples of warm apple pie. (WHICH WAS DELICIOUS). I was happy they participated with the apple theme of the day, and am willing to bet they do this with all events and fests in the neighborhood. Savory Spice Shop is as sweet and savory as their spices. The space is inviting and as warming as the meals you cook with their spices. Spice up your life with this place! My first time visit to Savory Spice Shop a couple years ago made me a repeat customer. I was looking for Indian Black Salt. At the time, they didn't carry it (they do now). I was wondering if another kind of salt would work. The salesperson gave me a thorough rundown of what Indian Black Salt was and why I should not substitute anything else. She directed me to an Indian grocery store on Devon, and that's where I found the Black Salt. I was impressed by the clerk's depth of knowledge and reluctance to sell me something, anything, just to make a sale. Since then, I've returned many times for different kinds of paprika, rosemary, thyme, cinnamon, gift packs of spices, gift packs of popcorn, different kinds of barbeque sauce -- you name it. Everything I've bought has worked perfectly in my recipe. The gifts are well-received. The staff all seem to have an incredible depth of knowledge. I also appreciate that you can buy spices in amounts as small as half an ounce. Sometimes, trying a new recipe requires unusual spices. I'm willing to try such new recipes because I don't have to buy a whole seven-ounce bottle of something I may never use again. And yes, the aroma in this place is magical. We made a quick stop into this shop while in Lincoln Square. It was not a planned visit, but we were in the area to go to a restaurant and had a few minutes to kill, so we stopped in since it looked fun. The Savory Spice Shop makes their own spices and blends. I came here during Apple Fest so it was SO busy, but the service was not lacking whatsoever. It was crammed in there...let's all say it together now "THERE IS NO STROLLER PARKING IN STORES!!!!!!". Okay, so minus almost knocking over display cases time and time again due to the lovely strollers, I was in love. This store is more affordable than the other spice shop I go to and it has more of a variety. I love how organized this place this. All of the "exotic" on display, "curry", "chilis", "salts", "bbq", it's really quite brilliant. They also allow for you to "taste", now I wasn't tasting because I'm not sure how others are going about it, but if it's the lick my finger and stick it in the bottle of spice method I wasn't about to be into that. Maybe they can offer spoons or something to make it more sanitary. They have a lot of really neat spices, afford prices, they're right off the brown line, and they're a nice knowledgeable group of employees, so it's too good to be true? Well, they also have a label that tells you where the spice is from and what it's used for, HOW COOL IS THAT? For example my vanilla bean ($1.80/each which is cheaper than the $4 I paid for at the other spice shop) states "do not freeze" and tells you how to use it "whole, cut and remove seeds" then it says "uses: for flavoring chocolate, coffee..."good with certain savory dishes like lobster or veal". My critic acid states "known as sour salt, powder extracted from juice of citrus" "uses: tart flavor used to make beverages, traditional borscht". Each jar of spice has pricing such as 2 oz....$x.xx and you just go up to the counter ask for your package 2,4, etc oz or you can be fancy in buy it in the glass bottles (which is +$2 more) and they'll package it, weigh it, and label it for you all right in front of you. read more

The store is nice, the selection good and the prices reasonable, but the staff got a little passive-aggressive with me. I have needed berbere for a while now, but the store closes just before I get home from work during the week (6 PM) so I finally stopped in on a Saturday afternoon. When I found the bottle, I took a quick picture to message my girlfriend and make sure I was getting the right thing. As soon as I got out my camera, one of the employees walked up and stood in my peripheral, looking straight at me. I paused for a second but she just kept staring me down, eventually did one of those really loud, deliberate throat clears. She walked away a few very long seconds after the throat clear, when she saw I was not going to recognize her. The woman who rang me up was plenty friendly. I get that it may have looked like I was documenting their ingredient list to go try to blend it myself at home, but I don't know why reckless eyeballing was preferable to asking "can I help you with anything today?" like every other customer service professional. Our favorite spices are Long Peaks Pork (I cannot eat pork without it), the hickory smoked salt and whiskey barrel pepper! A day won't go by where I don't use them all! Also, when I got married, I gave away the spice kits to my wedding party and OMG was it a hit!!!!! Everyone said it was the best gift ever! Most of our spices are from this shop. Great, great shop - wonderful spice blends at reasonable prices (they're not cheap, but once you try their spices you'll never go back to McCormicks) and terrific customer service. I had a slight hiccup with an order I recently picked up. I emailed them after hours. Literally two minutes after they opened the next day I got an email from the owner apologizing for the mix-up and completely taking care of the hiccup. That's amazing. Their staff is knowledgeable and helpful and you can buy in the quantity you need to refill your own containers which is a huge plus. I bought 4 of their spice blend packages. I tried 2 of them, the bourbon chicken and the onion meatloaf. The bourbon chicken was OK a little sweet with a slight peppery taste. The meatloaf was so bland. The recipe on the package says to add salt and pepper. How can you have a spice blend without all the spices included? I have not tried the tomato bisque soup and the butter chicken. If they don't turn out to be outstanding I likely won't return. read more

Have you ever tried to find kaffir lime leaves? It's crazy hard unless you know someone that has bought them from someplace before. So imagine how excited I was when I found said leaves here! (I may have done a jig.) I also found dried lemongrass, ground cloves, and a few other spices. The woman who helped me gave me a few suggestions on other recipe ideas for the spices I bought. I prefer Penzey's in Oak Park for my "everyday" spices, but with some unique proprietary spice blends, Savory Spice Shop is a wonderful place to augment what's already in my cupboard. It also sell gift packs in varying sizes and prices, which I will definitely keep on my radar for gift giving that won't break the bank. Some fun gift pack ideas: "Better Baking," "Curry Collection," "Best of BBQ," "Surf & Turf"--just to name a few. There are ethnic spices galore, many of which I've never seen before in any spice shop. I nearly wept with joy that they had dried kaffir lime leaves. Last summer I spent an entire Saturday driving from one Asian market to another looking for the damn things (to make Vietnamese chicken wings). That was quite the odyssey. In addition to all the wonderful spices, it's also a purveyor of specialty items like dried exotic mushrooms, mortars and pestles for grinding your own spices, spice racks, Lillie's Q bbq sauces, demi glacés, hot chocolates, books, preserved lemons--so many cool things! Right now, I'm seriously coveting the pink Himalayan salt block (even though I have no idea what I'd do with it). I could do some major damage to my wallet in this shop. Spices can be purchased in bags, bottles, or quantities in as little as half an ounce. The staff is knowledgeable and eager to answer any questions. I was planning on going to The Spice House but my boyfriend and I deemed it too far at the moment and decided parking was probably a hassle around there. I looked up spice shops on Google Maps and this gem of a shop popped up. SO GLAD I WENT! Upon entering the store, I was hit in the face with the smell of various spices but it wasn't unpleasant. The shop could maybe be called "quaint" but there's plenty of room to move around. The shop clerk (I should've asked his name!) was friendly without being fake and informed us that not only do they grind their spices weekly to make sure they're fresh, we can actually TASTE the spices! I'm a chilehead so I went straight for the spicy spices. They did not disappoint. There were all types of curry spices, taco spices, carribean blends and even ground ghost pepper and ghost pepper salt! There were also quite a few sweet spices, extracts and essential oils. Great addition to Lincoln Square! This is an adorable spice shop that will fulfill all of your cooking needs. Really large selection of spices given the small size of the shop and reasonable prices. Some of my favorites were the various curries, seasonings, dry rubs, cocoa mixes and the flavored sugars. The service was really friendly and pleasantly hassle-free. Even though it was busy around the holidays, they asked me if it was my first time in and proceeded to explain to me how the process works. I love that you can taste all the spices and can get them in almost any quantity. If you are strapped for time, just purchase one of their pre-weighed containers. Everything is really clean, and clearly labelled. Additionally, the space is immaculately decorated & they also have great gift sets which anyone would be more than happy to receive. Ghost pepper salt! (Too spicy for me, but it's cool anyways!) Every seasoning that you can think of is within this store. Every time I stop by, I find five or six spices that I feel I need to add to my collection. The staff here is incredibly friendly. They're the most accommodating, considerate, and nice people that I've ever met in retail. They go above and beyond! Last time I was in here I picked up their enchilada seasoning, bison dry rub, truffle salt, and their capitol hill seasoning. While everything is wonderful, the capitol hill and truffle salt are both fantastic! The capitol hill seasoning is fantastic on eggs! Ooooooh, this place is so exciting! I love spice shops! And I can walk to this one! Well, walk a mile, but it's worth it. I came in here for stocking stuffers for Christmas, and ended up getting some hot chocolate for my friends, and mulling spices for my dad, and chai spice for my mom. I had such a great time exploring the store, sipping some mulled spice apple cider to fight off the chill, and talking to the extremely friendly employees. They are knowledgeable, passionate, and helpful. This is an amazing store for cooks and novices alike. They have tons of great blends, and also plenty of whole spices and powders. If you don't want to make your own, say, Cajun seasoning, they will have a few blends for you to buy pre-made. If you want to make your own, they'll have everything you need to make it yourself! Pick up any cookbook, pick any recipe, and know that you could find all the spices here. The quality is exceptional compared to supermarket-bought and the prices are very reasonable. You can buy in a variety of sizes so if you only want a little bit of some unique spice for one recipe, they can accomodate. Great place to shop for any "ethnic" recipe, beyond a doubt. I was very much impressed with the Savory Spice Shop, the new Lincoln Square addition - and honestly much needed. I've spent much too much time on the train trying to get to The Spice House in Old Town, and this shop fills every culinary need that I could want. There was literally nothing that I wanted that this shop didn't have. More importantly, everything was laid out in a very systematic, logical way. They even had entire sections of ethnic spices (Indian, Moroccan, "Exotic") so that you could discover new flavors to compliment the ones you already love. The staff was very friendly, if not completely overwhelmed by the opening day crowd. The shop is very clean, and crisp. There isn't too much space to walk around, but this is mostly due to Lincoln Square mothers thinking their double wide strollers should belong in a small shop. They don't. Use social logic people! Parched from all the samples, The Savory Shop even has two water fountains in the back near the check out area in case you want to rinse your mouth out. They have some SUPER hot peppers in the front (with warning labels that say "For your own safety, please get assistance" so you don't get die from the fumes) from all over the world. My only critique is the lack of selection from The Olive Tap. They had 4 flavored olive oils, and 2 balsamic vinegar selections, neither of which seemed to be displayed well. If they're going to also try to offer olive oil selections from this Long Grove staple, I would imagine it would be better to stock their best selling 15 year Balsamic and some straight olive oil's from Italy. This shop is much needed in the area. I can't imagine it will fail provided the population. And perhaps not coincidentally, it's located directly across form Gene's, so you can get amazing meat and just walk over to get appropriate spices. read more

Came across a great recipe calling for sodium nitrate. Who in the what now? After much research, a few store visits and mounting frustration that I would have to place a ridiculously expensive online order - I called the Savory Spice Shop. The employee suggested a pink curing salt that contained sodium nitrate that they had in stock. I sent a friend over on their way home from work, and they even made a few suggestions of what places in Chicago might sell sodium nitrate. I went on opening day and I missed the aromas of spices I expected to experience as walked in, but maybe it's because they just moved in. I was excited having a spice shop opening in the neighborhood. I love, love, loved the fact that they had tester bottles where we could sample spices. I was actually enjoying the experience but unfortunately that feeling was short lived. I soon observed people carelessly sampling the bottles that were not labled as testers--ones that were supposed to be on sale to the public. And what really turned me off was when people were opening tasting and sniffing the spices from the bottles, even the larger jars where they scoop out smaller amounts, for those that needed smaller quantities. Not very hygienic. I was discouraged from purchasing anything after observing that. But I did purchase a few ounces of an ingredient that I needed for a raw brownie recipe I wanted to make that evening. I just talked myself into getting it hoping no one would have wanted to take a sniff out of that particular spice. I guess I didn't purchase enough to warrant the complementary sample packets of spices they advertised to give away on opening day, as I observed them generously giving other customers even encouraging them to share the samples with friends. I decided to remain loyal to The Spice House, a Chicgao original, where I have been getting 3 pound supplies of Ceylon Cinnamon with a group of my friends and coworkers on a regular basis. We have started using it in a daily supplement for health purposes with immediate and miraculously amazing results! read more

I'm pretty much loving Savory Spice Shop, right now. I walked by it all the time, but only recently started shopping here and can't believe I waited so long. They have a great selection of herbs, spices, seasoning blends, salts, etc. I'm always able to find my favorite spices/blends, and the staff is always able to make a recommendation if I'm looking for something new. The Savory Spice Shop has been a great resource as I'm trying to eat better and cook more at home. The staff is friendly and helpful without being overbearing, the spices are fresh, you can sample (either taste or smell) pretty much anything (ask if you don't see a sample bottle out, they'll be happy to start one for you), you can buy just about any amount you want (within reason, of course), and sometimes they have free samples of different blends that you can take home to try. read more

Staff, and I believe the owner helped me...are very knowledgeable and love to hear how customers use the spices. This is such a great set up, I think they should partner with Gene's to offer lateral discounts for meat rubs and deli purchases. I pick up a coupon at Savory for a discount at Gene's for meat, pork or chicken, then run back to Savory with a coupon from Gene's to get a discount on BBQ rubs or sauce! This is the best spice shop in the Chicagoland area! The spices are perfectly blended together to give you authentic flavors that are not easy to find otherwise! You do pay more for spices that are available sometimes in common stores but it is worth it because using freshly ground spices significantly enhance the flavors of the food. They have a lot of unique blends as well with recipes and suggestions on how to use it. Their suggestions are usually really good. What a gem of a place! We came to get some spices as gifts for Christmas and ended up leaving with an absurd amount of spices, Dutch cocoa powder and vanilla bean sugar for ourselves!
