I've watched with interest as turmeric has been touted as a spice that has anti-inflammatory properties, aids in reducing cholesterol, helps mood, etc. I visited Love That Spice, a cute spice shop in downtown Highland Park. This is a friendly and welcoming space with premium spice and tea blends. I tried the Golden Milk Latte, which contains turmeric. They asked if I wanted to add a little honey but noooooo I had to deny myself and abstain. I regret it as I don't like the taste of turmeric. The staff was very helpful in answering my questions and preparing my drink. Next time I will have them add the honey. Love That Spice will help you to love that spice. read more

I love the Chai latte here. It's not too sweet and the flavor of chai is strong (but not overwhelming). The inside is peaceful and is the perfect place to enjoy your drink. Marlena is fantastic! She clearly explained each ingredient and made sure that we love our drink. It's made-to-order and each item has a purpose! I have never been in a place like this - it smells great! She was talking about the ginger shots and someone was brave enough to try one while we were there. Hot tip: it's spicy. Lovely shop with a kind and very personable owner who will help you find what you need or the perfect remedy for what ails you! They also blend and serve a variety of natural teas in various flavors. I am more of a coffee girl so when they mentioned a Chai tea made with chicory (and oat milk, yum!) that tastes like coffee, I was sold. And after I tasted it, I was hooked! Healthy and delicious. I'm craving it just thinking about it now! The peanut butter protein balls we tried were a amazing also. I would drive to HP just for those! The owner Marlena's husband grinds the spices at night and everything is made in-house and fresh. The aroma when you walk in is amazing and the shop is laid out so nicely. This place is great! The owner and staff are super friendly and very knowledgeable about their teas and spices. I was looking for a particular blend of tea for my diabetes. Judy was super helpful in telling me which blend they have. Marlena, the owner, bagged my tea for me. I loved how she wrote down what was in it and explained why the ingredients were in there. There are directions on the bag in how much to use and how long to steep the tea. I was afraid the tea would taste too earthy, but surprisingly it tasted very good. Everyone I meet, who has been to Love That Spice, keeps telling me that the owner, Marlena, is just...the...best! I had the chance to stop in to Marlena's shop yesterday, and I kid you not, Marlena is...the...best! I also think she's got a magic touch. She knows how to blend tea and spice mixes for all your ailments and needs. She's well-known for her anti-inflammatory tea, and apparently there is a love potion of sorts she knows how to mix up. The shop is small and specific. She now only sells 100% organic products. She's truly dedicated to her mission. There's nothing better than the excitement that oozes out of Marlena when she opens up that jar you're eyeing so you can look inside and smell it. You'll oooh over her oolong blend. And, yesterday I had the opportunity to taste her tea with hibiscus and a drop of all natural sugar. Lovely. They hand cut turmeric in the back, and did you know for it to take its true effect you are supposed to mix it with pepper? Who knew? Check for in-store events, because I know she recently hosted a cooking class with a French chef. Visited yesterday and met Marlena, one of the original Spice Girls! She has what you want, what you really, really want. :-) Her shop is small but mighty. She grinds only small amounts of whole herbs/spices to make sure they are as fresh tasting as possible. And she will customize any blend for you based on your personal likes. She made me a delightful fennel tea blend. I highly recommend the harissa blend. Brown a pound of cubed beef, lamb, pork, or chicken, etc. with some chopped onion. Toss in a teaspoon of harissa spice blend and stir it in. Then add a lg can diced tomatoes and a small can of chick peas (aka garbanzos). Cook a bit and taste - add more harissa if desired. Simmer until tender and serve over rice or cous cous. Your tongue will be doing backflips! I also picked up a bottle of chocolate extract. I repeat...CHOCOLATE EXTRACT! This could be life changing. French toast batter with chocolate extract instead of vanilla? Yeah, Baby! read more

I attended an Indian Cooking class a few weeks ago, purchased Tikka Masala spice and tonight my husband and I enjoyed Chicken Tikka Masala just as Marlene taught me! I LOVE this place!!! The only place I go to buy spices, they are so fresh. Once you've used fresh spices to enhance your cooking, you will never go back to buying high sodium spices again! Mix your own seasoning or choose from her amazing seasonings that you won't find anywhere else. I've had severe asthma since elementary school and taken many steroids and other quick fix or "bandaid" medications but none seem to work well and they all make me feel horrible! I was warmly greeted by a woman named Marlena that I learned shortly thereafter was the owner. She went through the list of tea mixes she creates. I decided to go with the anti-inflammatory hot tea, she added a bit of honey to it and then proceeded to blend the ingredients in a blender. This was the first time I've ever seen this done so I was pleasantly surprised. Needless to say, the Tea was excellent and I will be back soon. Great little addition to the neighborhood.
