I live in Lincoln Square and I have always wanted to check this place out. I stopped today and it was my first and last time. No one acknowledged that I had entered the shop and no one asked if I had any questions, 5 minutes later 2 other individuals walk in and they got all the attention. Great place with knowledgable , super friendly staff that are never cloying. . I've shopped in larger places like Penzey's to smaller venues like Old Town Spice House, and prefer the selection, quality of products, and service at Savory Spice Shop. (Different strokes for different folks). I try to get there during the weekdays because parking is most always at a premium in Lincoln Square (make sure to feed the meter...... area is crawling with parking Nazis.) read more

Ventured in here for the first time today. What an awesome surprise. They have this great selection on spices/blends. That sounds pretty boring right, you'd be surprised. Its amazing what you'll find at savory. The staff is warm and welcoming, give samples of all their different spices, teas, popcorn salts, rubs, grilling spices, baking goods and other oddities you would typically only see in San Francisco or another artisan city. Fun place just to look around and browse while you're waiting on your restaurant reservation or just strolling through downtown Libertyille...we will be back. Oh, and if you are going to the movies up the street, you have to stop by and ask about their popcorn toppings. They have this AMAAAZING cheese powder made from dried cheddar. With that and their maple powder, you can create you're own Chicago mix right in the theater. read more

I was greeted the minute I walked in the door and given the run-down for how things work. I love the idea of being able to sample the spices before purchasing. That'll not only keep me from purchasing spices that wouldn't work, but will keep me coming back. When I was ready to purchase, an employee immediately helped out. I purchased several spices that needed to be weighed and bagged. They have a great selection of spices from all over the world so you can find just about anything you would need or want. The service is fantastic. The employees are very knowledgeable and friendly. I'm very happy a store like this exists, especially in Lincoln Square. I will support this shop and wish them the best. I really wanted to like SSS. It's in my neighborhood and the spice combos they have seem interesting enough. I typically buy from Penzys but aim to shop local. Unfortunately I have been disappointed with everything I purchased from them--truffle salt (which was not nearly as good by comparison to the italian truffle salt with the same price point I got at Penzys) and the turkey rub, which was muted, bland and not tasty at all. I tried to give them another chance this weekend when I needed vanilla, but they didn't have any for me to sample. Vanilla is expensive and is only grown a few places. Since I had a disappointing expensive truffle salt purchase I decided this time I wanted to actually taste the vanilla. They didn't have any open and they didn't say they would open a bottle so I could try the varieties they had. I could have explained the situation, and my hesitation, but ya know, I'm tired of having to explain how good businesses succeed. I walked two doors down to the chopping block where they had a vanilla that was double the price, but guess what, when i asked to sample, they happily pulled some out. I will not be returning to SSS. read more

This is a really cute shop in the also cute Lincoln Square. There are tons of interesting spices to choose from and the knowledgeable staff is happy to help with any questions you have, and also make suggestions. I love that this store allows you to buy small amounts so I don't have rarely used, obscure spices losing potency in my cabinet. The only downer was that they've been out of organic cinnamon for a while, but I get that it's not a life or death issue. Instead they recommended a dark and fragrant Chinese cinnamon. It's been great in my morning oats. They know what they're talking about! read more

I love and sincerely miss this shop. It was the go to for my endlessly creative cooking mind! I miss it and knowing how great the products are, there are none in the state of NV, so I order online and get products coming from Savory Spice shops in different places. I was very pleasantly surprised to see that my last order of curry came from none other than the Savory Spice shop at Lincoln Square, with a personal note from them! Brought back many great memories of there. My philosophy is that an end product is only as good as the products you put into it and these products have never failed me. I continue to add one of my favorite secret ingredients to my chili, spaghetti sauce, chicken salad, etc. I made spaghetti for a friend and when I asked if he tasted the smoke flavor, he replied, "I don't know what I tasted, but it was the best sauce I have ever had." Absolutely love this place and it's a wonderful addition to Lincoln Square. I went in there because I needed a specific kind of paprika for a recipe (a type of paprika I didn't know existed). Not only did they have it, they had three different varieties. I was so confused me but the clerk explained the differences, asked what I was cooking, and immediately pointed to the one I should use. The dish was fabulous. I love their spice packs for pasta, pizza, BBQ, fish and other purposes. I got my dad the BBQ pack for Christmas one year, and he just loved it. I don't shop here super often but I the prices are totally reasonable. The staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable. read more

I am a years-long fan of Savory Spice Shop. My now-husband is from Denver and his mom is an amazing chef who always has a huge stockpile of spices from this wonderful shop. When we would travel to Denver for the holidays, we would leave extra room in our luggage to bring back spices from Savory Spice Shop...definitely had my bags searched more than once at DIA because of this place. Well, no more TSA rifling through my undies: Savory Spice is now in Chicago proper. Savory Spice beats Penseys or whatever it is any day of the week. Just come here and taste the salt and you will be happy. Except...don't pop a finger-full of ghost pepper salt into your mouth or you will have a bad time, but they also have a sink with water at the back of the shop, so there's that. Cantanzaro herb blend (salt free) is one of my favorite blends to use. The pomegranate molasses: so good! I can't say enough good things about this place, I already know that I am a life-long customer, and you should be too. read more

Yesterday my husband who is a classically trained chef and I went into the store for some specific things. I love to bake and my husband does all the meat, including a whole prime rib on the grill every Christmas. What a very nice place. We initially worked with Mary and then Dianne. This place is amazing! The staff is friendly, approachable and knowledgeable. I came in here to buy vanilla extract last Tuesday. I was tired of spending $12+ on name-brand extract. I got a 4.5 oz bottle for $7.50! The sales girl even talked to me about their different kinds of vanilla, she explained which were best for baking and which ones were best for ice cream and custards. Very helpful! They also have a rewards program. For every $100 you spend you get a $10 gift card! She even gave me a $2 off coupon good at a stand at the Lincoln Square farmer's market. i ordered several of their seasoning gift sets for Christmas presents. as long as I was ordering those, I also selected several individual items for my own spice rack. love love love the toasted onion powder! order arrived promptly, and upon inspection, they sent me a package of bay leaves and not the aforementioned onion powder.
