On the map, this was indistinguishable from nearby Dameron Marsh. Upon arriving, I was surprised by…read morewhat I found here. A short boardwalk leads to a genuine beach, one of the larger and nicer ones I've ever seen on the Chesapeake. Don't get me wrong, nobody's surfing on the little waves the bay generates, but it's still got a nice beach aesthetic and a good view. Several cautions are warranted, including the obvious risks of biting insects (not so much on the beach, but definitely on the inland track) and jellyfish. But I was surprised when a local told me that some of the marshy areas and the stream where a lagoon flows into the bay are prone to developing quicksand, to the point where people can get seriously stuck. (Unlike in movies, quicksand is not likely to drown you on its own but I still would not want to step in it). So watch out for that and bring some bug spray. Plant and animal life was abundant, and between the forest, the marsh, and the beach, there was a variety of scenery. So little of the bay is open to the public and preserved in this way. And this is not a park per se, and so unlike most state parks, this is free to enter. The parking area is small, and signage says they do not allow parking outside the lines, so visitation will be limited simply by space. But if you see a space open there, I'd take it.

This park is fantastic. There are only 11 parking spaces, so access is limited. The trail through…read morethe woods is beautiful. Some of the trail is raised wooden platforms. The beach is amazing. It is rustic and beautiful with marshlands and wildlife. There are two hiking options. One is interior and goes in the woods. The other is beachfront. Both trails are great. There is one point where there is a small inland marshy lake. It is usually connected to the bay. The water here is usually flowing in or out depending on the tide. Be very careful trying to cross because the sand is soft and you could get stuck. It is remote, so you might not easily get help. The wildlife in this area is great. Sometimes I have seen hundreds of flapping rays just off shore. Birds, fish you never know. Fo and enjoy this special treasure.

Late checkout please!…read more A hidden Jewel for RVs and tent campers. This review mostly speaks on the tent camping since that is what my group did. The turn onto the gravel driveway is easy to miss with only a small sign at the entrance. There are three desk people to check you in. The older man (owner), an older woman (the wife), and a younger woman (employee). We had the young woman. She was pleasant and informative, sometimes whispering so the older folks couldn't hear. "Check out is 3:00 p.m. but we don't really enforce it." We stayed in the tent area with electricity and water (circled in yellow) for about $50. We had sufficient shade and the spots were HUGE, about 50x100'. There are also non-electric/water sites for about $45. You might prefer these spots for their view of the water or proximity to the playground and bath house. I would definitely pick the tent area next to the playground and bath house if I had young kids. There are also sinks outside the bath houses to wash dishes. There is also a fish cleaning station behind the bath house (not shown on the map.) Each site had a 22" fire ring that fit the grate from a Weber kettle perfectly. The picnic tables were rickety we used duct tape to cover loose nails. A neighbor hammered his nails back in. Shade and tinder was provided by the pine trees. You might even find a spot to hang a hammock. The swimming pool appeared clean but we did not use it. The motel rooms were not available due to lack of housekeeping staff during our visit. Criticisms of this campground? Sure, the older lady behind the counter is a senior citizen. And the bath house might be 200 yds away from the tent sites. There is another campground with big billboards describing it as waterfront. We checked that out also. Waterfront? Yes. But it's the same waterfront that power boats and other watercraft will load in from. So expect trucks pulling them in and out of the water all day (and perhaps all night.) The tent sites are small. Possibly 20 x 30', we saw many tents butted up against the neighbors tent. I hope you don't mind your neighbors snoring! We will definitely return to Pine Grove on future visits.

We went on our 15th anniversary and the following year, we took all our children and have been going for over 25 years. There's no way to book it and it's all blocked off as though they never exist existed.. it's so sad to see this place gone to nonexistent and everything being diminished. We will miss Don & Wanda, the most wonderful people.

The wildlife refuge near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel did not seem to offer a ton of access to…read morebeachy areas, instead containing a visitor center and some trails through reasonably pleasant forest. Stopping in at the visitor center got me a lot of welcomes, including from a retired physician with a biology background (this sounds like a nice way to spend one's retirement). Among other things, I was informed that the island which the bridge runs through is only open for tours a few weeks a year, and I received information on how to pursue those tours, which I might follow through on. Otherwise, I refilled my water bottles and got in a nice little walk.

Worthy of a stop in my book, but don't go out of your way if not passing by. There are two parts…read more The Eastern Shore Visitors Center which has its own listing and the grounds. I would recommend doing both and have enjoyed for years. The location is just a few miles from the Bay Bridge with good signage. If you plan on doing both park at the visitors center there is a grassy path to the refuge. It's approximately a mile walk. If refuge only drive past the VC and hang a right to a small lot. The entrance is under a WW II concrete bunker with a surprise upon passing through. A powerful gun originally mounted in the rear turret of the Missouri. A cool side note. The USS Missouri was the site of the 1945 Japanese surrender ceremony. The 16 inch 50 caliber gun saw extensive action in both WW II and in the Korean War. The weapon was placed inside the refuge in 2013 to represent the original that sat in the very same bunker. The 2,100 pound round could fire at a distance of 21 miles across the bay and then some. On top of the bunker is an over look and worth the climb. Stairs are located on the side and are in great shape. Unfortunately it's not the best Kodak moment with a lot of over growth that needs cleared. If you bring a selfie stick or foot ladder that's best to elevate. There is not a large trail network which is a limiting factor. However, the refugee itself is hundreds of acres all Federally protected. Along the trail to a second overlook is a small cemetery which is nothing of interest. The second overlook located just mInutes from the bunker is the ideal photo op location. It's green, it's marshy and it's expansive. So snap away. For lovers of birds you will see water fowl. I'm a bit surprised that the refuge has so few reviews with a lot of traffic that passes by nearby Highway 13. If time permits go for it. Both the ES Wildlife Refuge and Visitors Center and can be done in less than two hours easy.
