We had the most amazing time on the river today AND the most amazing guide on our boat - Katie!! everything from the bus ride to the drop in, to the ride down the class 3 rapids, to the hike, jumping off the rocks into the river and a terrific lunch (complete with an Idaho surprise dessert!)....it was a perfect day on the Salmon River! UPDATE: We have actually used this company several times since writing this post. And its an A+ each time. Best time. Staff was so much fun, informative and just gave our family the best experience! We had Gusty and Miles as our guides and they were beyond wonderful. The lunch was great (amazing cookies) and the photos after were perfect- captured some amazing shots of us on the river. I just had my very first white water rafting adventure in Costa Rica earlier this year so when my in-laws suggested we take my 3 year old whitewater rafting I was skeptical. We checked with Sawtooth to make sure it's safe to take a 3 year old (turns out it is). Thanks to my paranoia we opted for the Family Float Trip. We drove an hour or so to Sawtooth, met our float captain (Rob), were fitted for life jackets and then drove another 20 minutes to the river. They do provide a bus to the river, but we decided to drive so that we could use our car seat. They were nice enough to move our car to our final destination. We ended up randomly with another family from the Chicago area (small world) on our raft. We all grabbed a paddle (including the 5 year old that was with the other family) and we placed our 3 year old in the middle of the raft...where I hoped she couldn't fall out. For the most part it was a pretty peaceful float with a few bumps (nothing more than class 3 for those experienced white water rafters). Of course my adventurous little girl liked the bumpy parts of the ride best and probably wouldn't have been thrilled on a full out whitewater rafting adventure. Perhaps next year! Rob was a great guide and did a nice job pointing out all the beauty surrounding us. He provided us w/ a snack (watermelon and cookies)...and squirt guns for the kids, which were a huge hit. The only time someone actually fell off the raft was when the 5 year old was filling up our squirt gun, but she was rescued by Rob within minutes. Phew! They did have a photographer taking a few pictures during our trip that I'm sure we would have had an opportunity to buy once we headed back to to our meeting place, but since we had our car we just drove straight home. We'll just have to come back for another rafting adventure to capture it better next time. Highly recommend...a lovely way to spend a warm summer day if you're lucky enough to be in the area. read more

I went whitewater rafting here. It was an extremely unique and enjoyable experience. The guides were very helpful and friendly and I loved it. Unfortunately, I think our pictures could have been better. Half of them were from behind and the other group seemed to have a total of 10 more pictures than us. I could not say enough good things about this rafting company. I have been on a number of single & multi-day rafting trips throughout Idaho over the years, but this one I took two weeks ago really does stand out among the best, despite the fact that we were only there a few hours! To start, all of the employees were very kind and helpful. When we arrived at the business at the start of the day, each employee greeted us & introduced themselves, even if they weren't coming out on the water with us. We picked the half day adventure with lunch included. We elected to ride in the duckies (inflatable kayaks) so we were fitted with wet suits, booties, splash guards, helmets, and life jackets. (If you choose to ride in the boat, you just get a helmet & life jacket, although you could probably get booties, wet suit, etc. if you expect to be cold). After getting fitted for your gear, the guides then bus you about 15 minutes away to the drop off location. The guides give a safety spiel & you're off! On our trip, we had three of us in duckies, and another family in a raft. The family in the raft had a guide with them, and we had another "safety" guide in a kayak paddling right next to us. At no point did I feel unsafe or nervous, as our guides were great as making us feel comfortable. They pointed out all of the routes they suggested we take when going through the rapids for optimal safety, and paddled right around us as a safety measure if anyone were to fall out. You raft for about 2 hours through a beautiful section of the river. You hit 3 larger rapids with a bunch of rippling, "fun" water in between to keep things interesting. There is also a rock that they stop at to let anyone who wants to jump in. After the couple hours rafting, you pull off to the side & the guides prepare you a lunch. You stop at a really ute beach with a fire pit, plenty of chairs and benches, and a game of horseshoes to keep you entertained. I was honestly expecting some lame sandwich of white bread and bologna, but boy was I wrong. They started us out with a nice platter of cut watermelon and honeydew melon slices to hold us over while they prepared the rest of the food. Then they laid out the buffet of three different mixed salads: a quinoa/ corn/ black bean salad, a chicken salad, and a caesar salad. They also had two different types of tortilla wraps to wrap up any of the salads if you chose to. The salads were very well prepared, lightly dressed, and full of nutrients and flavor. I was pleasantly surprised by the delicious & healthy options they had for us. They also had plenty leftover for seconds so don't worry about getting hungry while you're out here! They finished the meal with some delicious, chunky chocolate chip cookies. After the guides clean up lunch, you get back in your raft and float for about 1 minute downstream to the other side of the river. There you pull your rafts out & bring them up the hill where the bus is waiting for you to drive you back. It is about a half hour ride back to the office. Once you're at the office you get to look through the photos that were taken of you while riding through the rapids. If you wish to purchase the pictures, they're only $20 for all of the photos they took of your whole party. Overall this was a great experience & would be especially fun for someone who is new to Idaho, or is just on vacation trying to experience a bit of the great outdoors. read more

Sawtooth Adventure Company was fantastic! My family and I went on the half day trip ("family raft adventure without lunch") of class II and III rapids, and had a lot of fun. Although we booked the trip without lunch, the guides brought yummy snacks for a quick break in the mountains: watermelon, granola bars, pretzels, and homemade chocolate chip cookies. Those cookies were some of the best I've ever had! Our guide, Stephanie, was super fun and friendly. She made our trip even better! read more

Looks like a caveman, acts like a gentlemen and will give you the best darn tootin rafting trip of your career. They were great! We took a group of six rafting: 4 adults and 2 kids. Our guide, Troy, was very patient and friendly. He told stories and jokes and was very engaging throughout our rafting adventure. He even offered us extra sweatshirts when we were freezing from (voluntarily) falling in. We would absolutely do this again, and part of our party is planning on using them (Troy) for a fly fishing trip. The Rapids weren't huge this time of year, but the guides made it fun! They even let us put beer in the cooler on the boat! read more

This is the third time I've done something with this company. I should write 3 reviews but I'm too lazy and with only one other review out there I'd look like a plant with 3. The first trip was 2 family father daughter kayak trip. Fabulous service, well-organized, and guides that the teenaged daughters fell in love with. This experience brought us back twice more, the most recent trip of which was a guided fly fishing trip down the Salmon, followed next day by kayak rental and self guided trip. Again the level of attention to detail, organization and service, impeccable. Jared (owner) must have a very keen eye for talent and an excellent ability to bring out the best in his crews. Face it, outdoor adventure guiding is generally a bit of a "whoa dude, sorry I forgot the life jackets be right back" kind of labor force. But because we got there early each time we saw a pretty good cross section of the operation and it ran a lot more like Vail than Bob's Backwoods Bush Guides 'n Barbecue. Friendly relaxed feeling but still thoroughly professional organization. Impressive. Ian, this year's fishing guide, deserves special mention. Don't know that the others aren't great, but certainly he is. read more

We just got back from our fly fishing trip and it was fantastic! This company is a first class operation. I had never been fly fishing and Troy was an excellent instructor. He untangled lines, changed flies multiple times and even climbed a tree to free a line--all while enjoying the trip as much as we did. It's obvious he loves what he does and Sawtooth is lucky to have him. I have to add that the lunch provided was delicious. I expected the usual turkey sandwich on white bread in a box and was pleasantly surprised with homemade salads, a variety of drinks and dessert.
