I used them in 2009 to transfer VHS to DVD and didn't really have any complaints. I remember that it took longer than I expected, but not so long that I thought to complain. This December though, I sent in some slides to convert to digital media and a few weeks later I got a message about a delay due to something or another and that my order wouldn't be ready until the middle of March. I checked the website only to see that no progress had been made and when I sent and email they told me the new deadline had been pushed out by another four weeks. I asked for compensation for the delay and they refused. Just doesn't seem right. I wasn't expecting a huge discount, but they could have offered something. To top it off they said they were experiencing a "slight" delay. Completely out of touch. I would not use them again, I would rather pay more for better service. I ordered my slides (VALUE KIT for 2K slides) on 2/7. There were issues and finally they promised me they would have them back to me on April 8. Now it is April 8 and I still don't have the disk with the digitized slides back. It has been a constant struggle to communicate with them. Their progress on my order on April 8 just says, DISK preparation. They had told me they would do my slide copy in the US to facilitate it getting done but I am not sure they actually did that in the end as it has taken soooooooooooooooo long. read more

On the advice of a friend who is a professional photographer who regularly uses Scan Cafe, I sent 140 slides ranging in age from 28-35 years. It started out as a simple process and I was given a chance to preview the order before completing payment. Every slide was accurately digitized with no blurring but some of the slides were far too bluish in tint and needed re-scanning and color correction. Kevin Brown in customer service was consistently helpful in facilitating this process but alas the task seemed beyond their skill level. All my slides were sent back and through use of my own Apple iPhoto software I made all the color corrections myself, realizing that my memory of the actual colors made it impossible for them to know what a truly accurate rendition would have looked like especially considering that many of the slides were of high altitude snowfields in Alaska under very subtle light conditions. I have to give Kevin an A+ for attentiveness and persistence to helping me. Very unhappy, total waste of $300. A lot of my photos came back darker than the actual pictures. I thought by scanning them they would clean up the darker pictures and it would help preserve them for the future. I should have just saved my money and left them in the photo album. Anywhere there was a shadow, it came out even darker on the scan. People's skin tones came out a lot more orangey and the resolution on some pictures are very grainy. Pictures are not sharp and clear and crisp. It didn't seem to matter if it was a 20-year-old picture or a one-year-old picture. I probably could have saved money and just gone down to CVS and did it myself and receive the same quality. read more

I uploaded an old photo that was badly damaged by god knows what. I do digital repair myself but this photo was beyond my expertise. They fixed the photo. The fixed one looked awesome and I was really amazed on how well they did it. You folks are great. The price was not that bad considering the fact the photo was in such a bad state. read more

I can't speak to the quality of their work, because SIX MONTHS later we are still waiting for the dvd's of our old super 8's. Many phone calls, many broken promises. Customer service is absolutely horrible and they are both completely uninterested in our frustration and unable to give an accurate estimate of when we might actually receive our discs. We were notified two weeks ago that our order was finally complete and were charged the remaining amount. However, we have still received nothing and as of this morning they say they cannot tell us when we can expect them. read more

Forget about it! These guys have no concept of customer service. I went for a package deal with about 600 35mm slides. It took MONTHS to get the order back from Bangladesh, Elbonia, or wherever they outsource the work. Many of the scans were totally messed up -- way out of focus and way way WAY too dark. There were no such defects in the originals. I complained and they agreed to re-scan the whole lot. Scans turned out a bit better this time, but still only so-so. And the re-order process was slow, cumbersome and -- there's just no other word for it -- STUPID. There is no reason to pay for this level of service. read more

It took us a few tries, but my order is now complete and I couldn't be more delighted. I'm grateful that ScanCafe stayed on top of my order and ultimately provided mirrored images for each of more than a dozen old family albums. It was a labor-intensive effort and while some wrinkles needed to be ironed out with regard to consistent labeling of photo files (so they corresponded easily with the hard albums), ScanCafe reps stayed with the project, communicated well and were consistently courteous and responsive. I had a great experience with ScanCafe on multiple occasions. Folks need to understand that photography is an art and on that note, scans can take time and they don't always come out perfect the first time. On a recent order I was not satisfied with some of my photo scans, but Alan, Alex and the team followed up regularly, did re-scans as necessary, supplied me with previews and ultimately delivered a scanned product that I was extremely happy with. Thank you for that! Customer service was attentive. There may not be someone there 24/7 but an email reply always came with a 24-hour window. The scanning process does take some time, but this is to be expected because as someone who owns their own Nikon scanner, I can attest that it does indeed take time to scan and filter these precious memories. Most awesome is the fact that we may preview online and delete up to 20% of the photos if they are blurry, dupes, or just no good. I look forward to using ScanCafe again in the future. read more

I sent about 75 slides to ScanCafe. I am extremely pleased with the results. Communication was regular and immediate from the time ScanCafe received my box of slides. The enhancements to the quality of the photographs were world-class, much better than anything I could have done on my own. One of the slides was flipped; I went to online chat, and the reversed slide was immediately corrected. I am delighted with the convenience of being able to share my slides, and to be able to download them as well as have an archival DVD. I would use ScanCafe again in a heartbeat. read more

I submitted 38 reels of film of varying size, all numbered and labeled by number on a separate sheet of paper. The order came back completely out of order with no labels, some duplicates and triplicates in the various chapters. The film had been taken off the original reels and placed on larger reels -- and left on the larger reels, not returned to the originals. It will take days to sort through and determine if everything was scanned. It was a big mistake to selec t ScanCafe. read more

Wow. I'm surprised by all the negative reviews here. I've placed 8 orders with ScanCafe between 2008 and just a few weeks ago. Every order has been on-time and of high quality - most have been at pro resolution and are clean and well retouched. I've sent thousands of 35mm slides, 35mm color negs, and 2.25x2.25 negs as well as a batch of prints. I have not used their video service, which looks like it generates most of the complaints. I've never had any type of customer service issue and have recommended them to friends who have also had great results. Because they are not a restaurant, I think they probably don't get a normal allocation of "they're great" comments here on Yelp, only complaints, because people probably don't think to go to Yelp to talk about this type of product. It's also a lot cheaper than their list prices because they are running a promotion just about every second week - just sign up for their emails. read more

I really am a fan, and a long-time customer. The customer service is absolutely exceptional. I can't name all the great people who have provided this excellent service but the names of Chris and Jeff come to mind. The process for using this company's scanning is very simple and the service is economical. My one missing star has to do with the fact that while the original scans were accurate, in the last couple of years, the scanning has been done in another country, where the scanners do not always seem to understand what they are scanning. Perhaps the scanning has always been done abroad, but the initial scanners were better than the current ones. Sometimes they mix up the labels that you provide, but that isn't usually a problem because you will remember your own photographs. More serious is the fact that I have taken forty years of photos of architecture, and buildings aren't blue and green. Landscapes in the USA and Europe aren't acid tones of blue-green. But when they send the first group of scanned pictures for my review, in recent years there has been far too much blue and green in the results, not true color. Then I ask for revisions, and they redo the scans (I told you there was good service!) but sometimes those aren't all accurate, either. They will keep redoing what you insist on, and the customer service people communicate with you quickly and courteously. Perhaps if I were sending only pictures of my family, which people in that country may understand more easily, the first round of scans would be perfect, as they seem to be from most of the reviews. But anyone can send anything for scanning and in the end, even if you have to spend some time going through your initial round of results, you can bet on having good scans. read more

Ordered their value box which is supposed to arrive in 8 days. It has been nearly double that amount of time and still no box. Their website shows that UPS is awaiting the box. They get one star for a quick reply by their customer service department, but only for that. If they cannot fulfill an order for an empty box, what will happen to my order? I brought my wedding 120 negatives for them to scan. The result is very good and the price is fair but still high compare to digital. Well, the turn around time is long but it is the natural of film scan and it is the reason why films are very rare. My only complaint is the .jpg file default adjustments. Many of the photos are over saturated. I have to manually tune it back to normal. I like the dull raw scan from them but it is not the default. Overall I highly recommend this site to others since this is like to be your onetime investment to convert your old films. The turn around time sounds long but consider how much time you'd need to spend on your own scanner, this is still a very good deal. I may have to sell my Minolta 35mm negative film scanner and just let them scan them to me. I can't finish my negatives in a year, so 6 weeks turn around time is awesome :). read more

Horrible!!!!! After successfully scanning a couple batches of loose pictures for us, they told us that they were in the wedding album business and could scan our album. The scans were of poor quality but that was nothing compared to the album. It was returned with every single photo damaged (70 pages worth). Apparently, as their CEO said, someone in their India scanning facility (where our wedding album got shipped) didn't know how to take pictures out of an album and bent each photo. They actually gave us back our album with bent pages to match the bent photos with the added joy of loose photos falling out of the album. Despite their promises to fix everything and produce a new "perfect" album, we waited months and months only to be told that the new scans (that were done in their new Foster City HQ with the "world's most expensive scanner") had changed our black suits to blue and that it just didn't work. So, if you have any photos of memories you want to keep, don't send them to these guys. Trust me. read more

Zero stars, if Yelp would let me. I have used them in the past with good results, but the last two times I used their domestic rush service, and the whole process has been abysmal. They have miscounted images, they have lost images - and later found, but the final straw was whenI realized that they were scanning my vintage 8x10 images without taking them out of the polyethylene sleeves that I use to send each photograph. read more

I cannot say enough about ScanCafe's service and quality. Recently my uncle in Australia died who had a very interesting life and many types of media that documented it. His siblings wanted the actual media to distribute at our 75 person family reunion where we would have my uncle's memorial service. But we also wanted his media available to make a DVD of his life to show at the memorial as well as be able to share with all of our extended family so I sent it off to ScanCafe It was a more challenging job than I anticipated because as a professional photographer he had many size negatives, slides and paper photos. I did not realize how this would impact the price and delivery. To keep the price in line, I cut out certain of the items (they sent me an email once they had an exact count of each type of media). But when I realized that the delivery was not going to make it for the reunion, I contacted ScanCafe and explained how critical the delivery of both the scans and the physical media was. Chris contacted his supervisor, Alan, and ScanCafe must have worked around the clock because I had the scans 10 days before the reunion. But then they went way beyond duty. I needed to get the originals to Tampa (I had sent them from Virginia) where our reunion was, for distribution to the relatives. Naturally, this is not the norm since most people just need the scans, which I had downloaded from ScanCafe's website, and the originals are shipped back more slowly. But I had opted for the cheaper rate which meant they were in India. I called and explained my problem and Alan had them shipped directly to Tampa instead of going to their Indianapolis headquarters and then to me. The box was shipped from India and arrived within 36 hours in Tampa! There are two other important points: 1. When you go through the scans (you can delete up to 20%) they show the original and the corrected copy and the contrast is incredible! I will be sending 3 more sets of scans to them. 2. I have never seen such an easy customer service interface. I had many, many emails and phone calls because of my timing problems. When you call, you get a message asking to push a number for a new order or an existing order. Every single time I pressed the button for an existing order, someone (almost always Chris) answered immediately - no waiting in a queue or leaving a message. And to almost always speak with the same person was extremely helpful. Chris was always polite, helpful and went to his superiors or production when necessary and got back to me promptly. When I wrote emails, I often got responses back within the half hour or at least less than 24 hours. This is service I rarely see! I wish I could think of any improvements to their system - but I can't! read more

about a year ago, maybe more, I had my entire family film library scanned and converted to dvd by SCAN CAFE. In the first go round, the DVD's did not mount and my son's name was spelled wrong and the Tapes were packaged in the DVD boxes in the wrong. 10 year next to 1st year in the same box. They went ahead and re-did the work and sent it out. I never opened the box. Last week our dog died. after 14 wonderful years and we decided to look at the dvd's. I opened the new boxes. And the DVD's were in the same order and my son's name was still wrong. BUT at least they played this time. Problem is on many of the disks, I get error messages -- skipping over damaged areas. Great, I trusted them with scanning all my family memories and now they don't exist anymore. I still have the tapes, but no longer have the video player to find the video that is missing. So, not sure what to do. But pretty poor performance. don't make the same mistake i did. avoid them. read more

Just used Scan Cafe for the first time. The scanned about 250 old faded photos of various sizes, plus about a dozen 35 slides. They came out great, but more important was the great customer service. After placing my order and shipping the images I realized I selected the slower service option (lower price) and that would cause me to miss my deadline for a 50th B-day party digital slide-show. I called and spoke a service rep named Oscar, he was awesome, friendly, supportive... he asked to call me back after he looked into it, he called about 10 minutes later and said they would accelerate my order, 2-days later it was done (it would have otherwise been 2-weeks). I now have the confidence to use them for about 1,000 old images I have laying around that I would love to have in my digital library. Thanks Oscar! read more

If you don't pick the more expensive USA express, your negatives will be sent to INDIA to be scanned. It took Scan Cafe a month before they even started my scan and then another month to scan the negatives and now they are telling me it will be another month before I get back the actual scans on the flash drive I sent them. They said they uploaded the scans to google docs a week ago, but the scans aren't showing up on my google doc drive. I would not use this company. read more

Scan Cafe has the best deal going for scanning old slides and photos to digital format. Their process reproduces slides to perfect color reproduction while eliminating dust, hair, and other debris. I sent my slides to ScanCafe. They were slides of my parents' early years of marriage and of my childhood. I felt the communication with ScanCafe was excellent. It was easy to send them in and they were returned in perfect condition. I appreciated their letting me know that some of my slides were of a different format. These guys are terrific! I have sent in several large batches of old family slides, and my whole experience has been positive. The scans have been very high quality, and the customer service has been great. I like being able to track the status of my order online and download the high resolution completed scans. If you wait for their sales, you can get some good deals, and I like one of the options which allows you to opt out of 20% of the scanned slides, so you are only obligated to 80% (Sometimes, the full size image is not what you thought it was). I used Scan Cafe to do 30+ years of family photos, mostly 35mm negatives but some 126, 127 and 645. They did absolutely beautiful work. Even some negatives that were a little thin came out nicely. There were no dust spots and digital images were exceptional quality, I could not have been more pleased and so were my adult kids when I gave each a set. I was nervous about sending out these family photos because there is no replacing them if something happened to them. Every single negative, and there were 9000+ of them, came back.
