I'm a very happy Netflix user but Scarecrow is a staple for Seattle movie lovers. have everything you could ever want to watch. Organized very well, though I usually get lost in the mountain of movies racks. Rentals are going up in price in April 2009 ($4.50 for new releases and catalog titles) which can be heavy on the wallet, because I usually can't get put the front door with out least with 4 or 5 titles, but I will still continue to rent from scarecrow as long as they're around, one of my favorite places in Seattle. read more

This place has an enormous selection with movies from basically all time periods and countries. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and devoted to the subject of movies. They also have a New Releases section which has the most recent DVD entries. This section is a godsend for people like me who have yet to conform to streaming online and/or Netflix. If you want to watch it, Scarecrow has it. I found videos there that I hadn't seen since I was a wee little lass growing up in the concreteshire of Maryland. The collection is so extensive and offers so many out-of-production and rare items that often a deposit of $100-250 is required to check them out. The store is also cool to roam, with two stories, whole rooms dedicated to anime and horror, etc... And if you want the Ultra-Special Triple Edition Boxed set of Lord of the Rings, or the Mad Max series, they probably have it. Film geeks and snobs, this is your heaven on earth. read more

I have to admit, it's been a long time since I've been here, but I used to rent from here all the time. It's amazing the movies that they have here and their access to them. They even have very limited editions that you can't find anywhere. This is a must stop if you're a big movie buff. read more

I would give this place four stars, but it can be rather spendy. I bought an old movie from the early 90s here (Twin Peaks- Fire Walk with Me) and it cost me $20, which is absolutely ridiculous for an old movie nowadays. I can see new releases, but a twenty year old movie? Nah. I could've easily bought it for at least half of the price online, but since it's a local place I decided to just buy it since I was really looking forward to watching it that day. I found The Thing (1982), to get for my boyfriend as a gift, for about $10 here, which I was fine with paying and it seemed pretty reasonable. I was actually pretty excited to find it because I couldn't find it anywhere else. Until I got home and found it on Netflix. That was unfortunate. However, I enjoy having a hardcopy of my favorite movies rather than just relying on Netflix so I wasn't too disappointed. The employees are pretty nice. I don't rent anything from here because it's sort of out of my way. I read more

This place is great! They have just about every movie imaginable and I like how they organize the store by category, drama, comedy, mystery, scifi, animation, kids, new releases, etc. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful and they have their own parking lot which is nice. When season 6 of the Soprano's came out, we of course wanted to rent it but we knew it would sell out fast so we called before we went to see if they had any left. They had one left and offered to hold it for us. When we got there it had already been rang up (since they keep your credit card on file)! It was awesome! He just handed it to us and we were good to go! It was all taken care of before we even got there, that's what I call service! If you're looking for a great place to rent, this is it! read more

Scarecrow is the video place I wish every neighborhood had. The people are extraordinarily helpful. I'm not good at getting my movies back on time and they always look for a way to reduce the penalty I'd otherwise be in for. They'll recommend movies on just a few hints at what you like and I've never once encountered attitude, which (as another review has said) I used to fear because they're pretty hipster lookin' in there. But they never put me through it. They just cheerfully help. And need I mention the breadth and depth of their stock? Staggering. Hard to get my mind around. Intimidating, at first. They're prettying the place up, too. It was getting pretty shabby (but who cared). I once had a car totaled by a hit-and-run driver as I was leaving their lot, so keep a sharp eye out for people driving excessively fast in the alley and you should be good to go. read more

I've been to video stores all over the US and this is probably the best I've had the pleasure of frequenting often. I think that if you watch movies for the simple joy of watching something blow up, stick with Blockbuster or Hollywood Video. If you're looking for knowledgeable staff and titles that Netflix can't deliver on, come here. If you've heard of it, they probably carry it. If you live in Seattle and want to nourish your movie hunger, come here. I promise you that you'll know more and have a greater appreciation for film if you do. read more

My favorite video store to go to. The best place to get really hard to find titles. I took a class on the history of animation once and they were an awesome place to find titles that you wouldn't find elsewhere. I went in there recently and got a lot of great deals on blu-ray titles that I have been wanting to buy. Also they do a much better job then Amazon at obtaining hard to find titles. Amazon wanted $300 for a rare Japanese import but I checked out the same blu-ray out at Scarecrow for $2! Scarecrow doesn't do the same supply and demand scams as Amazon. read more

The Story of the Sad State of Video Rental Today: My story begins at the Harvard Exit where'd I gone to watch the film "Take Shelter." There I was disappointed as the focus was hazy, and I commented on this to the projectionist. Having worked as both a manager and a projectionist in a movie theatre, I can attest: despite his saying he'd "look at it," the focus didn't budge. Needless to say, I left. Months pass. I'll admit here, I'd taken to streaming, as the Hollywood Videos and Blockbusters are gone, and all that remains are the indie video rental places where I'd dealt with some highfalutin attitudes as the years passed. I don't find some highfalutin attitudes from time to time. Sometimes they're earned; mostly they're not. It's usually the latter at independent video rental stores. I digress! Currently, not available for streaming rental anywhere is "Take Shelter." I thought: this inconsistency with streaming rental availability could work in the favor of those stores, the ones more worried for business than before. (I should add here I'm looking for Blu-Ray, as one would expect from a person who leaves a movie theatre for an uncorrected focus) Redbox, too, no longer rents out the "Take Shelter" Blu-Ray. I check with On 15th Video on several occasions, but to no avail. So I then illegally download the film, at a 1080p resolution, and begin watching only to have the sound out at 30 minutes thanks to a new method used by Sony to combat piracy. So I buckle. I'll try Scarecrow, today, the 4th of July. I check the internet to make sure they're open. They are. I walk in and the shorter man who appears to be in charge to some degree instead of greeting me informs me directly that they are only open for 15 more minutes. He repeats this to me later. I then inquire further with this man, after not having been able to locate the film myself, but he is anxious and bothered in his answers, as he if expects I've going to ask about Madagascar 2 or some such (That's not to knock Madagascar 2, of course, a film I've never see.) and it really seems clear to me that he's not very concerned with my business. But then, to redeem his attitude (perhaps wrongly perceived by me, I'll note, but unlikely) and the store's worth slightly, a friendly lady in glasses informs me that it is checked out on Blu-Ray, but DVD is available! Of course I will not watch this on DVD. But thank you! The possibilities exhausted, I now have to pay 16 dollars to Vudu, so that I "borrow" the "digital rights" to watch this film in a way that is fair to the director's intent. A win for someone, sure, but not for the independent video store as exemplified by Scarecrow! read more

The question to ask yourself after going to Scarecrow video for the first time: Are there any other video stores in Seattle? Answer: No.

My sense is that if this video store doesn't have it no one else in town does. I like the 1 week check out period.

Obviously this is the best video store in the world.. Sure, Netflix has lots of DVDs, but you can't browse their Post-Apocalyptic section's (original) VHS & DVD box art!!! read more

I went here for my second time tonight when my mom informed me our internet was still out, I stopped by the night before with friends to check it out. The selection is amazing. I do wish there were more DVDs to buy (they have different obscure movies id love to own rather than rent) and the guy who helped me out was kind of a dick. I have never written a review for anything before, but this place really went above and beyond for me, so it's the least I could do! My friends and I were SET on watching an old Disney Channel original "Model Behavior" (you know the one, Justin Timberlake...) First of all, how fabulous that you can even FIND this gem at a movie store!!! That in itself is reason enough to come here. However, they only carried it in the VHS version (fair enough, it is an oldie), and we didn't have a way of playing that.. Before our girls' night took a turn for the worst, they offered to rent us a VCR for free!!! Really making dreams come true. The guys who helped us were the best kind of customer service; they knew exactly where the movie was, they were friendly, and they were hilarious. It's always fun going in here, the people are great, and I refuse to let netflix/redbox get in the way of that kind of an experience. Go here and you'll know what I'm talking about. it's good to know that there are neighborhood video rental places that are still thriving. most have gone under, and even blockbuster is doing badly. but i can't even compare blockbuster to scarecrow. it's like comparing apples to oranges. this place is freakin insane. i'm overwhelmed just thinking about the amount of movies they have here. well over 100,000... seriously, any movie you want to watch, 99.9% chance they will have it on dvd or vhs. you can spend hours browsing each aisle, looking for a movie. staff is very knowledgeable and will probably be familiar with whatever obscure film you're looking for. they have a yelp/four square deal for $35 for 10 rentals. otherwise pre-pay is $40 for 10. totally worth it. read more

If it weren't for the late fees, I'd give this a full 5 stars. I've been a day late with a disc and charged full price for the rental. They say you can avoid it by calling in and renewing for extra days, but that's still the full price of the rental. Anyways, late fees aside, this video store is something you rarely see anymore. Take Amoeba music in California and turn it into a rental store. These only-seen-in-movies places really do still exist. Seattle has a weird way about preserving weird past-times. For example: landmark theatres, drive-in hamburger joints, the Cinerama, strip clubs next to hotels, and until recently old school bowling allys (RIP Leilani lanes/Sunset Bowl). read more

Who gives this place less than 4 stars?! Nothing compares to Scarecrow in the entire state! i don't even have an account (thanks hubby!) and i still go here. When Netflix is too slow and you NEED a movie... Heck, when you can't even find the movie you want on netflix, GO TO SCARECROW. I will say their organizational system blows my mind, but thankfully their computer 'look it up" system is uber helpful and i always find what i want. I hate going all the way up to the U-Dist. to rent and return but when it's your only source for amazing movies you put up and shup up. All hail Scarecrow! read more

This place has made some great changes in the last 6-8 months. Its so much easier to navigate and customer service has greatly improved. They're late fees are still a huge pain in the butt...especially since they have to be in before they close and not by the next am. All said i'm a much happier customer. Scarecrow Video is a true video store, and then some. This place has every obscure movie you could ever think of. The foreign film selection is superb. Having lived in Southern California, I would say the selection is even better than most of the best video stores in Hollywood. The only less than great thing I've experienced there is the parking. The lot is pretty small and can fill up fast. Other than that, I would go to Scarecrow Video over any other video store any day. read more

I love Scarecrow! I have never been dissatisfied with their selection or service. They always have so many movies and suggestions, I've never left empty handed. Their staff are really helpful as well and always friendly. It's the Swiss Family Robinson treehouse for video geeks. So many obscure genres to explore. Definitely worth spending time in.

This is the kind of place that doesn't really need my help, or anybody's, on Yelp, but will get it anyway because they generate such goodwill. I actually don't use them much for rentals -- I'm almost strictly into buying and keeping my movies and TV -- but if you feel like renting, this place will have it, and wandering the stacks is like reading a history of the medium of film. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable, and the fees are actually reasonable if you factor in the time you get to keep the rentals and the amazing selection they have. The buy section is also great, full of hidden gems and a full selection of Criterions, new releases, and re-emergent obscurities to boot. Plus, you can get Jolt Cola here, which I'm pretty sure isn't even made anymore, so obviously Scarecrow has mastered time travel amongst their many other accomplishments. Well done, folks! read more

Movie-palooza. My family and I love this place. If I want to see anything older than a couple of years, or foreign films, this is where we go. Always walk out with a stack of week long rentals.
