Well, I too was victimized by the terrible salesman working in the basement. I went in to buy a faucet, some connectors, and stop valves. I asked if the faucet was sold with connectors and he said no. He then proceeded to sell me connectors (one didn't match the valve and my plumber was baffled) and sent me on my way. When I got home I realized that the faucet did come with connectors and he either didn't listen to me, deliberately upsold me, or has no idea about his products. What was even worse is that they sold me a broken faucet! The box looked opened but I was rushed and didn't think anything of it. Unfortunately we didn't realize the faucet was broken until after it was installed. I want to support small businesses - especially during these hard times - but I strongly encourage anyone to shop anywhere other than here. I know I will never ever return here. I stood up for this place when a neighbor made disparaging remarks on next door about the salesman in the basement a few months ago. SMH. read more

I find it hard to believe that anyone who has shopped at Scarsdale Hardware could write a review and give them less than 5 stars! I've been shopping here for 25 years and what has amazed me is that the owner Glenn Greenbaum and his staff really tries to help their customers find what they are looking for. If they don't have what you need, they'll order it or suggest where you can buy it. A few years ago during a brutal winter, when they ran out of salt, Glenn called me when they got a new shipment and delivered the bags to my house ( at no charge for the door to door service). Over the years I've compared prices on their BBQ grills and found them to be competitive with the bigger stores like Home Depot and Lowe's. Glenn has been a great source of information when I've needed a window washer, gardener or a guy to clean my chimney! They have a huge selection of everything from nuts, light bulbs,to paint and given the world that we live in, where you can order almost everything on line, you also get phenomenal customer service! read more

don't often need a hardware store, but when I do (maybe two or three times a year?) I will always try them before going to big box retailer who shall go un-named (rhymes with Rome Schmeefo). I cannot recall the last time I went there and they did not have what I needed. Staff is always helpful and friendly, and, if I am paying a little more, then: A) I don't know so I don't care, and B) If we don't support these businesses they will disappear. This store is serviceable if you need something easy like screws. But you had better know more than the clerks if you need something more complicated. You are not getting lumber cut or hardware advice or keys that work or any real help at all. Also the hours are a bit short and the prices are quite high. TOO MUCH TROUBLE and NOT open Sundays I don't know how this store stays in business. Not only is it overly expensive, it's hard to get attention from the staff because they're always glued to the TV watching the game. Once a kid acted like he was doing me a favor when I asked about paint. Another time the young man waiting on me mixed my paint wrong and I couldn't take it back. How about training some of these employees? Then an old man refused to let me buy an extra drop cloth because I "didn't need it." This is a small neighborhood hardward shop that carries almost everything we ever need. What I really like about them is the advice and service you get. You may pay a bit more vs. a mass chain store, but they will talk you through any do-it-yourself home project. They really know their stuff and are happy to talk about it. read more

I love to support small, local businesses so that's my main reason for shopping here, but they also always have what I need. Their choice of potting soil could use an upgrade since it's mostly bark, but other than that I have nothing bad to say. They are open when I need them to be open, they are helpful when I have a question and, again, they have what I need when I need it. I've never walked out of Scarsdale Hardware without finding everything I needed (and sometimes more). Let's keep them open so we don't have go to Home Depot for absolutely everything. read more

If I could separate the upstairs and downstairs they would have different reviews. The upstairs would get a 4 or 5 star review and the downstairs would get a 1 or 2 star review. Every time we have gone in the people upstairs were gracious and helpful while the person who works downstairs was rather cold and not helpful and actively discourages you from buying anything. read more

I have incredibly mixed views on this store. It's greatest plus is that they are local and convenient, although parking can be difficult. They also cover a fairly wide assortment of products and therefore, will often have what you need. On the minus side they are pretty expensive. However, I'll typically pay for the convenience and prefer to shop a local small business, if I can. The biggest problem and the sole basis for giving the store two stars is the guy working downstairs, George, I think. I have dealt with him a number of times. Some words that come to mind: obnoxious, curt, slightly pugnacious and hostile. I suppose I could handle all of that if he was knowledgeable, but that's not always the case. He literally sold me the wrong product three times. Although I tried to have a discussion with him to ensure I was getting the right one, the "obnoxious" and "curt" part of his personality made that difficult. I can't tell you I won't ever shop there again, but I'll have to be on my guard with that guy because aside from the bad attitude, his advice can't be trusted. read more

My plumber required some parts that he was missing, and I really did not want to hike to Home Depot, that always turns out to take 1.25 hrs. My other consideration was to help out our local "mom and pop" business. On my first visit this afternoon, the owner is extremely helpful, and quickly ran down with me to get the two parts I needed. When I returned 3 mins after they closed for my second trip, the owner was extremely nice and ran down again to help me. The owner should look into hiring folks that are more interested in helping out clients. I recall the last time I walked in, I ran back out because no one was interested in helping me. They may be expensive, and the owner was himself surprised at the labeled price of one of the items I picked up, but for a couple of things, I'd rather not spend time running to Home Depot. The guys that work here are very nice and I like to support local businesses, so I try to go here when I can. Like any other independent hardware store, they cannot complete with the big guys. Items are double and triple the price that they are at Home Depot, the inventory is very thin and the return policy is "NO!". Yes, these guys are EXPENSIVE but when one considers that they are in the heart of Scarsdale (that rent can't be cheap) and they are actually open 7 days per week AND they are very knowledgeable about how to go about your DIY home projects and everything else (saving $$$ on calling a repair guy if you can do it yourself) these guys are worth every penny. I didn't realize the store was actually two floors (the basement has everything!) Biggest plus: saving yourself a trip to Home Depot on the weekend. Yikes! These benefits offset the extra $ you spend here. My only complaint is the guy downstairs in the basement has a standoffish attitude. read more

Guy in the basement is very unknowledgeable and rude. The basement has all the screws, bolts, drill bits, and other small items needed. The guy who works the basement knows nothing but professes to be an expert, he is always in a bad mood, and is often rude for no reason. The other day he sold me a drill bit that was bigger than the screw, I was in a hurry and just bought what he gave me. I come back 10 minutes later after I realized the bit was too big. Instead of apologizing he proceeded to tell me that it was my fault, that he did not make a mistake, and that I messed up the drilling of a hole. This was all unprovoked, I figured hey big deal let me just get a new bit myself and some new screws in this massive hole he made me drill. I just asked where the screws for metal and the metal drill bits were. He proceeds to try to blame me so I said just give me my screw back and show me where the screws and bits I need are as I can choose myself now. He proceeds to tell me to go to hell. It turns out that the drill bit I needed was sold out and the in my opinion the guy just gave me what was there. I go upstairs and tell the cashier what happened and the guy who I think was the owner comes by and apologizes and gives me a refund for the original drill bit. At the end of the day I will continue to go to this store but I will never trust the judgment of the guy who works in the basement. Just ask him where things are and help yourself, he is too unknowledgeable to provide any real advice. read more

They are competitively priced and Everyone who works there is extremely helpful and pleasant. I was looking for help getting a used piece of furniture out of my apartment and Paul and Vincent came when I needed them and removed it for me. Much less than junk lighters charged! I had a very good experience here shopping for a Weber Genesis grill. The employees were friendly and knowledgeable . I wanted to buy the grill from these guys but they couldn't deliver it 25 miles away (I don't blame them). Unfortunately my car was too small to fit the assembled grill inside. read more
