Saw them at the Haygood Roller Rink. I wasn't very impressed with with the venue or the gals…read more While they were all good at what they did the actual presentation was bad so my first experience with roller derby was pretty terrible. The commentators at the event didn't really say anything about what was going on for each of the 2 minute jam sessions (if that's what they're called) and didn't really say anything about the particular players or try to get the crowd involved. It was fairly dead. There weren't enough seats set out for the people who were there. So, essentially I paid $12 at the door to walk into a really crowded old and outdated roller rink which had probably 50 or so chairs set out at the far end and there were maybe 150-200 people there so everyone else was forced to stand even further back. That's a lot of money to stand for two hours. They didn't have any half time entertainment so we all just stood around and waited for the time to tick away. So for people who hadn't been to a match before it was somewhat confusing and not at all entertaining. Big disappointment.

Looking for something borderline violent? Interested in seeing a bunch of elbows thrown? Do you…read morelike the sounds of grunts, skates on a rink, and whistles? Then this is for you. I really can't say I know what the heck is going on but its a bunch of bad ass girls rolling around on skates throwing elbows and their booties to prevent the other team from scoring. I once witness an accident and to this day the scene plays in my head in slow motion. The injured player sat on the sidelines and waited until the game was over before going to the hospital. That's bad ass. Worth going if you can stomach a scene like I saw. Check them out at Haygood Skating Center. This ain't your Roll Bounce-type environment or your slow song at the rink kind of night. Some serious ish goes down with these gals!

We've been coming here for years and it always feels like a win, whether the Tides do or not! Tickets are super reasonably priced, which makes it easy to say yes. It's a wholesome, easy night out for the whole family cheering on our home team with the Elizabeth River glimmering in the background. The mascots can usually be spotted hanging out near 3rd base in the concourse for a photo op. Lots of tasty options when it comes to food, and I appreciate that there's usually something for everyone. We'll keep coming back, season after season, cheering loud for our Tides and soaking up that community spirit. If you're looking for a fun, budget-friendly, and family-focused night out in Norfolk, Harbour Park is the place. Bring your reusable water bottle, your glove (just in case!), and your love for local baseball. Go Tides!
