The YMCA summer camp here is TERRIBLE the staff is EXTREMELY RUDE, for example when I was fidgeting with my fidget cube my friend gave one of the staff FORCIBLY REMOVED IT FROM MY HAND! The only good part about the summer camp is the field trips. But the overall building is pretty sick. read more

I was a YMCA member for years at Schlessman and other locations. I also gave meaningful amounts to the YMCA, including Schlessman, for a number of years. I used to work out and swim at Schlessman, then Covid hit and I kept my membership for a while as a show of support, even though I wasn't using the facility because of Covid precautions. And then, when Covid started to wind down and I was ready to return, I learned that the Schlessman YMCA had eliminated towel service. As a swimmer and someone who used the locker room to shower and clean up for work, no towel service is an absolute deal breaker (and I cancelled my membership as a result). I think the YMCA needs to think about these things from the member's perspective -- about working people who regularly use the facility and the locker room and who have been long time, loyal members who expect/need basic towel service (after years of having it) and clean, comfortable locker rooms. Stuff like this is what differentiates the YMCA from less expensive Denver rec centers that lack these services and have stripped down locker rooms -- the YMCA saves some $$$ but loses differentiation and ticks off its members. Couldn't YMCA members pay an optional monthly fee for towel service? Just my two cents and sorry for hammering the point. Just hate to see the YMCA effectively biting off its nose to spite its face. read more

Recently re-joined the Y as my commercial gym is crashing and burning. I had never used this (Schlessman) facility before. So far it's been great. What do I like about this facility? 1) Free parking 2) Clean and well lit 3) Great stretching areas 4) Large clean locker room (actually, there are two men's locker rooms) 5) No loud music overhead 6) No personal trainers monopolizing machines 7) Not a for-profit business; they are not pushing trainers, paid classes, etc on you 8) When and if you cancel your membership they don't keep charging you. They could use a few more weight machines, and the layout is somewhat odd, with machines scattered in different locations. They could use some newer areobic equipment. But given my recent problems with commercial gyms closing, prices going up, they are a great deal for the money. read more

I'm hoping this reaches someone outside of YMCA local staff. I don't write to tear down this business, but hopefully help them out and foster change. The key issue with this YMCA is maintenance: 1) They can't seem to keep the men's room clean. The ATTACHED pictures were taken today after a week that the men's room wasn't cleaned (or partially?). NO, this is NOT the first time. It's been going on for at least 6 months. They will have a good one or two month spurt of cleanliness... and then if falls apart again. And YES, I've seen other members complain to the front desk. I have complained to the front desk twice and directly to the district manager - who of course assured me they'd address the cleanliness problem. No, it has not been addressed. See prior entries. Also noting that the soap dispensers are routinely empty. Some things staff CAN do without degrading their positions. Everyone needs to chip in to make sure the ship runs smoothly. Someone out sick? Contractor doesn't show? Someone needs to step up. 2) Repairs take forever. One urinal was out for two weeks and then the other one went out. The piece of paper saying the urinal was out fell off so people peed in the urinal anyway. 3) Machines need more FULL routine testing. One elliptical "grinded" when you used it. The other went off or restarted you workout when you went backwards. This could be such a great place - and probably is for most users. But seems like they are missing some basic fundamental operational things. read more

Ok, I gave this a chance from last review. After 5 years, this may be it and we may be moving on. Here are the reasons. First, they let go anyone that appeared to know about how to run an athletic club. That is first and foremost why you go. Second, it is obvious in the last year "management" wants to turn the Y into a social justice, cash donation machine. Sorry that is for me as a parent or the synagogue or church. Third, look at the qualifications of management in LinkedIn. They should be running a PParenthood, not an athletic club. The country is enough divided and now the Y is going to tackle "racism?" Why don't they put dues into the club and the primary mission. It appears they want to raise themselves as some type of huge non-profit in the "social justice" world. Start with having staff that know about running a club, I could point to 10 things each day that are obvious. I gave suggestions from time to time, and basically the management response was "we will take that under consideration" or $%%$$ Off. Now, add the fact that the sense of community has taken a deep dive in the last 18 months. The members are getting more and more disillusioned, you can tell by how no one talks to anyone anymore. And not because of covid either. And it is obvious the staff are suffering from the lack of leadership, communication and lack of support. So, no more donations either personal or from the company. We will go to another club, or like many people put a few pieces of equipment in the home. For the hap-hazard way they did the "upgrade" it was really poorly thought out. For all these reasons they went from two stars to one. We have been to both Planet Fitness and Chuze, and will likely go there. Much better equipment and no social issue stances forced upon us for being members. If the board of the Y thinks this is a great management team, maybe a little too much MJ usage here in Denver. read more

I can't say enough great things about this place. The daycare is well staffed with tons of toys for the kids. My 18 month old doesn't even want to leave! Variety of group exercise classes from body pump to cycling to yoga. A warm family pool and a lap pool for the adults. They even provide toys, flippers, and floaties for the kids. Well run and clean. We love coming here. And the people who come here are families! Not college kids wanting to pick up dates! read more

I was so excited to join this Y as it seemed quite updated compared to other Y's I've been a member of around the country. I joined mainly to have access to a sauna as it's something I have been doing for years. I wish the staff would enforce the rules they have taped to the door of the sauna. I have never been in a sauna with such strange, and frankly gross, behavior. People come in mid workout and continue to workout in the sauna (jogging in place, yoga, punching at the air which makes sweat fly all around the sauna, etc). Yesterday, a man kept emptying his shoes straight onto the floor... full of sweat every couple of minutes. I spoke with a woman who also left with me and we both commented on how we no longer want to use the sauna here. There is always someone in there making strange noises - grunting, heavy breathing (not in a natural clear your throat way, but grunting from stretching). Such a bummer, wish they would do something as they will start losing members due to others behavior. read more

Update ***. Member about 1.5 yrs now Listen up parents of kids ::: this warm kiddo pool basically closes at noon. Often. Reopens later. So if you are a working parent and have Sat Sundays off, think twice. Look- it closes often on weekends in the middle of the day to old arthritis warm pool classes. They only have enough life guards to watch the elderly, thus tossing all the families with little kids to the nearby freezing pool. Although the Y membership is expensive and they went up on prices again, there are not enough lifeguards to let the members with kids actually use the pool after the parents are done with their am workouts and want to head to the pool. Also - the warm pool is shut down during the summer during these mid hour (s) to accommodate the camp kids WHO DO NOT USE THE POOL. Correct, they do not use the pool. All the camp kids and are sent to the cold pool. They close the warm pool for reasons they themselves are unaware of if you ask. Perhaps they do not want the camp kids to wander over the warm pool. Perhaps they do not hire enough help to watch all the camp kids. Either way the cold pool is the only option, it becomes way over crowded with regular members and their kids AND then all the camp kids. I have heard they have smaller groups in the swim lessons now. But when I joined my kids in the swim classes - beginner swimmers - there were way too many kids per instructor. Very nice. Has kids camp in summer. Has a child watch area while i work out. Feels safe. Kids like it. Nice pools. Couple of the lifeguards are fabulous. Acouple are not. Nice family bathrooms. Clean place. read more

Traveling through town and stopped by this gym. One of the better YMCAs I've seen for sure. The weight room is fully equipped and has an assortment of machines, free weights, and other equipment. The staff is friendly and helpful. Also, the space is open and clean with several floors with different things on each floor. Overall, a positive experience and would recommend. read more

This review is specifically for the Child Care services at Schlessman Family YMCA only because we haven't used any other services at this Y. If you're in need of child care look no further than Schlessman Family YMCA. The teachers and staff are welcoming and friendly. The rooms are very organized and calm whenever I drop off or pick up. The child to teacher ratio is fairly low and there's usually at least two teachers in the room. My daughter (3 years old) loves her teachers and looks forward to going to "School" and its even a struggle to get her to want to leave sometimes, which is a good problem to have. When we do actually leave for the day the Y usually has a bowl of fresh fruit available for all to take an afternoon snack. My wife and I are very happy to have found this gem, we get on average 10 emails a day containing photos, notifications, and a daily summary report of naps, meals, and activities. We also enjoy the fact that the Y makes learning fun, our daughter looks forward to turning in her weekly "Homework". read more

My boyfriend and I recently joined this YMCA and really like it. They have a ton of cardio machines, fun classes, and something for the whole family. I really like the sense of community. Everyone is super nice and welcoming. They also have separate locker rooms for kids and adults. They have child care which is great! Just to note, I like(d) being a member of YMCA because of the kids programs they have, that underprivlidged kids can take part, and that part of my money went to support that. The staff has always been nice and relatively helpful, but the facility itself is very dated. The equipment is limited, the hot tub is often dirty, with broken jets, and tepid. The steam room is like a warm day in Miami, and not the after workout reward I look for. When trying to run on the treadmills, I felt the belt slipping on 2 machines, and advised the staff. They seemed concerned, and I was told it would be fixed right away, and it was not. I looked for another (they do have several) and the 3rd had the same problem. It's a lawsuit waiting to happen if someone slips, but more practically, it just drives me nuts having to worry about the belt slipping while I am running. I simply cannot get a good workout with that on my mind, and if I can't get a good work out, what am I paying a gym for? After this happened, I cancelled my membership and wrote my reason for doing so on the cancellation form. I never got a phone call, an apology, a refund, nothing. I never even minded paying higher membership fees (I even had them take out extra in order to contribute to some of their programs) but I need to be able to get a good work out. It actually saddened me to have to go elsewhere to do just that. read more

I have been a member of the YMCA for about 10 years now and let me tell you, the one thing that I have always appreciated is friendliness of the staff. Each and every time I check in, I am welcomed by the folks behind the front desk. Before the renovation I was just an occasional visitor but ever since, I have been a regular of this fine workout arena. There are plenty of areas for what kind of workout you're looking for, such as a space for dumbbells, a room mainly for abs/ stretching which has plenty of mats and medicine balls. There is a also very large section of tread mills and bicycles. Not too mention a plentiful selection of machines for all parts of your body. The sauna, stream room, 2 pools, yoga room, and locker room is really what makes this place special. I don't know why more people haven't joined the YMCA but I'm sure glad I did! read more

I used to belong to 24Hour Fitness, CAC and Prestige. Even though they are further away, I still go back to the Y. It's more expensive than 24Hour or Prestige, but they have more facilities - a pool, sauna, hot tub, etc. CAC is nearly twice the cost of the Y. Their equipment is fairly new and most of the cardio machines have individual TV's. What I like best about the Y is the number of classes they offer and the times they offer them. I love BodyPump and I'm able to take it often at the Y - unlike at the other gyms I've mentioned. Also, the classes are held in a very large room, so, unlike some of the other gyms, you don't run out of room in the classes. Most of the instructors are great - genuinely invested in your success and they'll take the time to help you with your form, etc. The Y is definitely not a meat market - most of the people that go there are of senior age (maybe they're picking each other up and I'm just naïve ;-). People are friendly there, though. The two issues I have with the Y are that the building is dilapidated and they only have a swamp cooler. They are supposed to renovate it soon, however. The other issue is that they have a lot of young kids working there and they aren't as focused on the members as they should be. read more

I would give zero stars if I could. Old machines, dirty facilities (do people really use the showers here? Gross), and employees that are unhelpful and rude. I wanted to put my membership on hold for a few months since I will be traveling a lot and won't be using it much, but was told they could only hold it for three months with a $10 charge per month as a "holding fee." Really? Considering how ridiculous that is, I asked to cancel my membership. It was the end of the month when I asked to cancel (July 31st), and was told that since the auto-pay for the month of August was already being processed, there would be no refund, not even a partial one, for August. "We need five days notice to cancel your membership." Okay, so why not cancel it starting the 5th of August and pro-rate my refund?? I joined the Y because it's a non-profit and I thought it would be more friendly and accessible than a big corporate gym like 24 Hour Fitness. I was wrong. read more

This gym is not particularly interested in serving its regular members. That is especially true when it comes to the pool. The pool is basically unavailable during after-work hours because a swim team has a practical monopoly on Denver-area YMCA pools almost every evening. If you want to swim laps, you basically have to plan your entire work day around the swim team's schedule. I've contacted them about it, and they said they don't plan to change anything. It's not just this location. When I try to go to the Aurora location (because the Schlessman/University Hills location is unavailable), it's the same problem. Pool is unavailable (or there are so few available lanes that it is basically unavailable to members). And it's the SAME TEAM at both locations. Why is this allowed? When asked, they say, "Well, the Littleton pool is available." But the Littleton pool is disgusting and it's only 3-feet deep and it's pretty far out of the way. If you're a regular swimmer who has a job, you'll need to find somewhere else. Or be prepared to swim your laps in the late evening (you know, like during dinner time.) read more

I'm so glad I live nearby this YMCA. I could spend hours here! Compared to the price and quality of other gym and group fitness memberships, one really gets a lot from this YMCA. Great instructors teaching group fitness and the classes are the perfect size. My wife and I joined the Y about 3 years ago and are very happy with what we get for our money. We pay about $80/month for a family membership, though our kids (high school and college age) don't take advantage. We are very pleased with the recently completed renovations. New cardio room is fantastic, and the weight room is about 500% better than what it was. Welcoming atmosphere, definitely no 'meat market' vibe. Love the pool, and the hours are way better than the nearest public rec center. I've done a whole bunch of triathlon trainng there, as well as general fitness work, and there have been very few complaints. read more

Love this place but they are NOT cleaning between clients in the cardio room. Also the hand sanitizer is empty most of the time. Please do what's right and keep everyone safer by cleaning. Also you need to enforce mask usage while people are working out. read more

My boyfriend bought a family membership to the "Y" for us to enjoy! It's been awesome. It comes with 2 hours per day of chld watch, so I'm able to work out like she is taken care of by great staff members. The treadmills are fantastic for running! It doesn't hurt its just a few blocks up the road from our home! read more

Not the place for fitness classes. Many of the fitness classes are not actually in this facility but are across the parking lot in the admin office building, in a basement room with no windows, bad lighting, and low ceilings. Some of the fitness classes they put in the basketball gym. They recently did a whole-building remodel, so it's unfortunate they didn't care to put in a better, usable room for fitness classes. They have a tiny fitness class room but I guess it doesn't work for many of the classes because they move the classes elsewhere. The childcare doesn't start until 8am, so you can't even make the 8am classes because you first have to sign in your child and then go across the parking lot to the other building where the class is already in progress. read more

I love this gym! I was lucky enough to start here after they updated everything. The staff is friendly and the patrons are regular people not the fake types that frequent most gyms. The equipment is new and there is enough variety to get a great workout every time. They also have a pool. My only complaint is that the price is too high. Went into inquire about their rates and the guy couldn't even be bothered to get out of his chair and simply gave me a copy of the prices. YMCA is an ok place to work out. The staff is not the problem, the problem is my rate has raised by $15 in the last 2 years. I'm paying $50 a month right now which would be alright if all courts and equipment were accessible. There is always something happening on the basketball courts, racquetball courts, and swimming pool which makes it almost impossible to use these amenities due to the fact they are already booked out. Another problem I experienced was there equipment was not always fully functional. I would say at least every other piece of equipment the tv's would not be working which is something your obviously paying for in your monthly fee. I'm switching to 24 hr fitness literally across the street and paying half as much! read more

Pedophiles and pervs must have an internal advertisement on this place. Had creepy dude watching me under water more than once; complained and they acknowleged others complained about him too but they did nothing. Adult locker rooms are quite delapidated, no private showers. Not the nicest members, do not expect a smile or a door hold. Sometimes felt like being non-kosher was akin to a snicker bar floating in the jacuzzi. Nice staff, stench of bleach permeates the towels. Free weight room is like a 1970's time capsule. read more

We have a family membership which includes child watch for both my littles. For the price, the amenities are excellent. Towel service, child watch, warm indoor pool, swim lessons, group fitness classes, all the weights & equipment you need (including a hanging bag & racquetball courts)... How on earth can you NOT be happy? There are more expensive/fancy gyms in the area that I've visited and honestly I'm very satisfied with this one. Can't beat the price & service. read more

We have been members for two years now. I chose YMCA because I have kids and it is close to where we live. We were new in the country and I thought being in the YMCA is the best thing for our kids. I thought since they have a lot of programs for kids, we will find people that will help us to build a strong base for our kids in different sports. But we were wrong, after 2 years in this place I still feel lost, the programs are a mess, the employees have no idea about the programs that they have in their facility. I have been asking for two years on how to bring my kids into a swimming team, and no answer till today, just lost and lost with no planned programs and no helpful pieces of advice from the employees. I feel really disappointed. I think the problem could be with the management, I truly don't know. The only thing I know, if you want your kids to be good in any sport and in a professional way, this is not the place for them. read more

I am writing this review because I feel that it needs to be said. I actually had just read another review about her and thought...this would be a good time to get something of my chest. I have volunteered at this location on many occasions and have continuously had to deal with an employee at the front desk whose name is Cathy. I don't know why she even works with the public because her attitude and demeanor is so insulting and hateful. I wouldn't be surprised if you have lost alot of members due to her lack of respect for other individuals. I mean, it is without reason and I have never before seen her with even a hint of a smile on her face. I'm very confused as to why she even works there, let alone being in the front with the customers. They just decided to change the rules in the pool, so while swimming classes are happening in the family pool, we're not allowed to be there, not even in the wade pool! The classes occur everyday. For 3 hours in the afternoon, which is the only time that me, and many other parents, have available to take the kids to play in the pool! I won't pay for the membership anymore if i can't use the facilities. And I won't go there at 8 pm! That's bedtime! This is a very stupid rule! read more

I suspended my membership during the renovations because the place was always dirty. Went to reinstate it today, was told I would need to apply for an entirely new membership--different information than what I'd been given when I suspended. Price has increased 20%. Another application fee. Rude people at the desk. Not recommended. read more

The Y has exceeded my expectations for working out and finding folks who share the same view of healthy aging. If you feel yourself slowing down and are not ready to accept that be part of your own rescue and give the Y a try. The options offered at the Schlessman Y and the staff make it easy to get moving and feel good about it.
