This was our second visit since the Schmidt family sold the business. Let's say we gave the restaurant a second chance. This place is known for its soup and salad bar. The first visit the soup lacked vegetables and meat. The taco bar lacked flavor. Our second visit again it was the soup, it was cold. My wife had the cod the crust was hard with lots of paprika. I had the hamburger steak (small order) which consists of a hamburger patty and a cup of au juice and rice pilaf. Both were served cool. My take on the whole thing was there was not enough help. I've never eaten inside the restaurant but I have tried their food via takeout, hence my review is solely based on the food that I ordered. I decided to order their Prime Rib Philly because I figured it would be something that'll still taste okay after lightly reheating if I needed to, and it sounded really good on the menu. The sandwich itself, in my opinion, is technically not a Philly. It's more of a Philly inspired prime rib melt dip sandwich. First and foremost, overall the sandwich was bland. And yes, the sandwich did come with au jus to add extra flavor, but the au jus was too aggressively salty. So I ended up with two ends of the flavor spectrum. A bland sandwich and a super salty dip. Philly's are not traditionally served with au jus, therefore this immediately disqualifies the sandwich as a Philly (in my opinion). I felt that the mushrooms did not add anything flavor-wise to the sandwich and was unnecessary, the onions were nicely fried though. I would have preferred cheeses traditionally used in Phillys, such as Cheese Whiz, Provolone cheese, or American cheese, instead of Swiss cheese, which again disqualifies this sandwich as a Philly (in my opinion). In theory, a prime rib Philly may sound good, but it lacks the well marbled fat found in a rib-eye steak, which is what is traditionally used in a Philly. I also felt that the meat was cut too thick. The sandwich came with fries and was okay, nothing special. Had high hopes for this sandwich, and I really wanted to like the food, unfortunately it did not meet my expectations. read more

Food was delectable, service outstanding, staff delightful. The dining room, though, felt very . . . institutional? or at least sort of austere. And the booths were super uncomfortable. The seats were set so low and the distance between the seat and the table was really short so it was awkward to eat. I have no back problems at all, but by the end of the meal, my back really hurt. Wanted to try something local while traveling. Clean and pleasant decor. Decent soup and salad bar (rolls were hard though). Inordinate wait for the entrees because of "a couple of big parties" the explanation coming only after we had been waiting and waiting. The steak by then had to be sent back (overcooked) while the pork chop and baked potato was warm but not hot. They were also not able to provide onion rings instead of a potato because it wasn't lunchtime. Server was quick to bring the check without asking with another round of apologies. After waiting so long for the meal, a minor discount or offer of a dessert would have been welcome. But we got to watch the gentleman stocking the salad bar and cleaning tables hustling all night. Something bad has happened to Schmidtys. Something very bad. I don't know what it is, but I can guess. Rotating staff, hiring whoever you can because your desperate. Shortages in the kitchen. Well, it has affected the energy, the wait-staff, and the food. Waitresses are almost running through the place, yet very slow.. Never the same face. Some try to be polite, but are too confused to focus. Waited 1.5 hours after our order to get food. And ordered a second drink, she never brought it. ( and that has happened before). Food is spotty. Sometimes good sometimes very average. I will still come back, because I'm loyal. But I hope the issues get fixed soon. read more

Some of the best Cheese Curds and deep fried mushrooms you'll find in the Driftless area. Prices are reasonable and they have a full bar. This was my first visit to Schmidty's and they earned my return patronage. There is both a bar area and a dining room. The dining room provide just the right environment to catch up with an old friend. The service was friendly, prompt, and attentive (but not over-attentive); the price was just right. The menu has something for just about everyone. I ordered the blackened catfish with dirty rice and two homemade hush puppies (served with honey-butter). It also included soup and salad bar. If your in La Crosse and looking for a good meal in a relaxed environment, I recommend you give Schmidty's a try. read more

Schmidtys has been an amazing restaurant for decades. However, lately, something has shifted in the less than desirable direction. The food is still good, however the customer service on the management end has dwindled. An example, while calling to place a reservation, I have experienced long hold times (5-10 minutes) only to be received with attitude and tone once my call is picked up by employee/supervisor. Ive known the staff there for quite some time and my heart is consistently disappointed. They will be losing a long term customer soon. read more

Food was excellent as always has been at Schmidty's ...we went early so were able to get a booth although in the bar. Service sucked. We have not been here all winter and will seriously consider returning. When hubby's prime rib came he asked for horseradish. ..server said ok and never returned. We never saw him anywhere in the room. Would have ordered another drink too but too bad for us. Wanted more water, tough. When he came to bring the bill & said he'd been over loaded WTH. This is what happens when the prices go up & kids take over. Too bad for what used to be always good all around. Again food excellent service is horrid. Based on all the great reviews, we went to this place. We're seated and greeted by nice staff and our server was lovely. This review is based on the food, which was so terrible, we hardly ate any of it. The server came and asked us how it was and she was so sweet, that we didn't complain. Maybe if I hadn't felt like they were trying, I might have said something. Hubby had prime rib and it was so tough, he could barely cut it. He ordered it medium rare, and it looked like a completely raw slab of meat (not even the edges were browned). It was truly awful, because we were doing a split and I couldn't eat it. I ordered the Parmesan-encrusted walleye. It wasn't encrusted. It was more like broiled with a pile of crumbs (mixed with Parmesan) on top. The fish had no flavor and the crumb mixture was really strange! I was wondering if I'd get ill if I ate the whole thing. On top of all that, we waited for about an hour for this food to come out. We were famished and then totally let down. We told our server that we had stuffed ourselves on salad bar and soup, because she thought we were nuts for not taking the rest home. It's a shame, because the place had a nice vibe and it's so close to our house that we could walk. I'm pretty sure we won't return. read more

Schmidty's is a pretty darn good Supper Club. It has the classic Salad Bar, and the typical Specials with the Fish Fry and the Prime Rib. All are completely satisfactory. I've had the fish fry a ton, and also the Pork Ribs are absolutely delicious here! Sometimes they'll even have Beer Cheese soup!!!! That is always a bonus. You have to get there early if you want the Beer Cheese soup though. My In-laws go here all the time, so I'm quite fond of it. It's great for the whole family, nothing fancy, just great American food! read more

A Saturday night around 5:30 we're getting hungry, we decided to go to one of our all time favorite places, Schmidty's. Got seated in the bar area immediately, good time to go, and our waitress Anita was Jannie on the spot with water and our drink requests. We looked at the menu and decided on our go to favorite, the sirloin steak sandwich. We have been ordering the steak sandwich for over 20 years......it's changed in price but always a wise choice. We ordered them medium with white toast, one side was included so I got the slaw and my husband got the chicken and dumpling soup. Our sides arrived promptly, my slaw was creamy and the soup was good, and by the time we were finished out comes the sandwiches. Fairly good sized perfectly done medium steak with toasted white artisan bread and a nice size portion of aujus. My steak was a tad on the tough side, but my husband said he's was perfect. The white toast when dunked in the aujus was very very tasty and Anita was wonderful checking on us multiple times for anything we might need. So happy we went, we sometimes forget how friendly the staff is and how flavorful the food. I did give a four star rating because my drink was a bit on the light side and my steak was as I mentioned, a tad tough for the price, $13.99, which I also think is little high priced. With that being said, we'll try to remember Schmidty's more often as it was a very enjoyable dinner. read more
