Perhaps a bit different is this "gastropub" specializes in wine so excellent selection of gewurtriminers and Reislings and the like. This place is so yummy. Very cool ambiance inside it's like a cave. We sat outside and it was super nice and chill off of the Main Street. I got the Weiner schnitzel and my mom got the garlic schnitzel and both were superrrr yummy. The schnitzel was not heavy or greasy at all and I was close to eating the whole thing if my stomach was bigger. I definitely recommend either of the dishes we had. They only have beer and wine on the alcoholic drink menu so that is something to consider. Server was very nice and did speak English and they also had an English menu. Thought it was very good and would go here again for the schnitzel although it could have used some salt. They also at the moment do not have any to go boxes and only have foil to wrap your things in. On the way from Frankfurt to Munich and looking for a place to eat, my protestant upbringing drew me to Heidelberg and my Yelp friends directed me to Schnitzelbank. I don't always follow the crowd, but in this case I am sure glad I did. We got in just before the rush, were seated at a communal table that we believe was an old school wood working table with a wood vice at each end. The place is small and cozy. The only thing that was limited was the beer selection (as in most places in Germany). The menu covered the bases and the wine list had enough to choose from. The staff was friendly and helpful. They didn't rush us and brought everything in a timely manner. The 3 of us ordered 3 separate meals and all were excellent. I got the schnitzel and certainly enjoyed it. I arrived late into Heidelberg and wanted some authentic German cuisine. The restaurant is located in the older part of town on a side street and looks historical. The chairs and tables are unique and there's a good chance you could be dinning family style with strangers. We started off with a German beer and ordered a bratwurst and pork schnitzel dinner. The portions were huge and the food was great including the sauerkraut and warm potato salad. The food here was amazing some of the best schnitzel we had on our two week tour of Germany and Austria. Had the schnitzel with the creamy mushroom sauce and spatzel and my husband had the turkey schnitzel. Meat on both was cooked to perfection. The fluffiest spatzel I've had. For appetizer we had the escargot which again was cooked perfectly and the sauce was delicious which thank goodness they gave us bread to dip into the sauce with. In Heidelberg on a business trip, was looking for traditional German food while wandering near the old part of town. Yelpers rated Schnitzelbank very highly; let me add one more favorable review. What do you call someone who speaks three languages? Trilingual. What about one who speaks two languages? Bilingual. But about someone who speaks just one? American. Fortunately, the staff speaks fluent idiomatic American, and speaks it with joy and hear humor. They made this American feel very much at home, even when I tried to decipher the German menu. (Which does indeed differ a bit from the American one, so be adventurous!). Seating is communal, with a few smaller tables packed around larger slab-like tables. Maneuvering in this small space gets exciting as the restaurant fills up, but you end up having plenty of space (and the opportunity to make new friends if you're so inclined). I ended up ordering the Swabentopf (Swabian Pork Casserole) - Pork tenderloin with bacon over a HUGE pile of buttery spaetzle, accompanied by a large and very tasty salad. Looked good great, smelled great, tasted great - wunderbar! This was a great experience overall - so good that I came back the next night (and ordered the Pffersteak, a slab o'beef that is similar to an American sirloin. The kinda chewy steak (my fault; should have specified rare) was served with a green peppercorn sauce and some of the most amazing potatos I've ever been served. Add a salad, a carafe of dry Reisling, and excellent conversation with a mixed bag of locals and tourists, and the meal was perfect. BTW, The restaurant's name is really a pun. It doesn't refer to the schnitzels they serve but for their large antique tables (schnitzelbank) which were used by carvers to remove slices - schnitzels - of wood while making barrels. The place was constantly packed at 1-2 on a Saturday afternoon. They turned people away because they only can seat around 25-30 people at a time We shared a table with a university student and her mother. The onion soup had a thin broth but good flavor. The salad was large and fresh. The sausages were tasty and not heavy. Sauerkraut was very good. Great spot for an early dinner with our 5 kids - but looks like it would also be an awesome place to go later in the night without the kids. We had several different types of schnitzel - mushroom was mine and was THE best, although all were almost equally delicious:)! We also had a steak, some cheesy Spätzle, and a cheese platter and all was SO delicious and plenty of food for the price. The salad that came with the meals was awesome - had a pickled tasting vinaigrette on it that was so good. One of the best Schnitzel places I've been to. I got the traditional schnitzel with lemon, not only was it a huge portion but it was scrumptious - the breading was flavorful and the meat was tender. We also got a meat teller (plate) filled with a variety of meats and sausages. It was a ton of food- the portions are huuuuge and the prices are reasonable. Note that it's difficult to get a spot here - there are only a few tables and it's usually packed. Try to get a reservation in advance and be prepared to share your table with other people due to the small space. OK let me just give it to you straight. If you ever decided to visit Heidelberg, Germany, THIS is the place to get amazing spätzle and schnitzel! I mean we waited all day just for this place to open up at 5 PM, and then we waited in line just to get in. I would say that the food we had here was by far the most authentic, the most tastiest, and the most satisfying German food we have ever had! They have options for vegetarians as well. My husband ended up getting the pork schnitzel and buttery spätzle with a mushroom cream sauce and I got the turkey schnitzel with the spätzle as well and both our dishes came with a plate of pickled and fresh salad. One bite into my schnitzel and I was in heaven. It was crispy and the Dijon mustard sauce was sweet and tangy at the same time and the buttered spaetzle was probably the best I've ever had my life. The salad on the side was pure perfection, and the best accompaniment to the rich food we were having. This place is a wine bar, so beer choices are limited, but the wheat beer we had was delicious. If you are ever close to the Frankfurt area and can make a short drive to Heidelberg from there, you should do it just to eat dinner here! read more

The decor in this place is rustic with a bit of a monastic feel - there's also this cool wall of currencies from around the world! We started off with a glass of the schwarzreisling (Pinot noir) and the Riesling tap, both were wonderful! Everyone always raves about German beer but honestly German wine is one of the most underrated things in the country, especially since the neckar region is known for its fertile land and perfect climate for producing Riesling grapes. We also got the snails for appetizer. Pro tip- dip the complimentary bread in the oil for some extra juiciness. For the main course, I got the house spatzle, which comes with a side salad. The spatzle is basically a baked noodle based dish and tasted like a lighter version of Mac and cheese - delicious! My mom got the garlic schnitzel, which is a piece of pork cutlet grilled and seared in a pan and covered with garlic and oil. She wasn't the biggest fan of the meat but I personally really liked the way they cook it at this place because it doesn't come with the crunchy fried exterior you find at most other restaurants it also comes with a side salad and fried potatoes. Man German potatoes taste like heaven drenched in oil! Would highly recommend and would even want to go back if not for the fact that we only stayed one night. What a great find! We managed to track Schnitzelbank down during light rain one fall night. When we went inside, the place looked packed. I was worried we were about to be turned away - but the waiter cheerfully pointed at an open section of bench at one table and encouraged us to squeeze in. Fellow patrons were friendly, re-arranging to make space for us. The wait staff is enthusiastic. Food was great: we both ordered the schnitzel with mushrooms. Waiter misunderstood us and thought we wanted one to share. I corrected him, but this was a hint that one is probably big enough for two people. Bring your appetite here - you're in for a challenge. I wish they had a better beer selection, but I get that it's a wine place. While the menu doesn't list any schnaps, we saw others drinking them and therefore inquired after finishing our meal. Waiter listed off about 6 different types, we made choices and wound our evening down while people watching. As a weekend woodworker, this place was a visual treat: originally a cooperage for the town, many of the tables are actually old woodworking benches. We recommend a reservation for a group larger than 2 because the restaurant is quite small and typically very busy. On both our visits to Heidelberg we made it a priority to eat here because it really is an authentic dining experience. The Käsespätzel is amazing and the real star is the Schnitzel!
