This place is amazing to take a walk or a bike ride(keep in mind your type of bike)! I have never camped here as I live nearby, but it seems relatively quiet and calm. Nice boat launch, and it's great for kids! read more

We came here for a picnic on Father's Day and the weather was great. There was plenty of on-site parking near the water (convenient for boat launchers and picnic goers), and there were several pavilions for rent. A nice children's play area was also available, plus lots of grass for kicking a ball around. There were great views of the Hudson River as well as the highway and railroad bridge. Sadly, no trains went by while we were there. They have nice campgrounds which we drove by on the way in, which seemed isolated from each other and well designed. At least a couple of hiking trails were also observed. Well worth the $6 cover charge to get in. read more

Had a 7 night stay. Left early morning day 2 as I got rained on. The so called captains of my loop watched me struggle for hours putting my tent up day one and two. I was alone with my dog. I was told by another nice man walking his dog who also works there that they're supposed to help if they see someone needs help. Well when I came back after work that day. She was smiling as I packed up and left. So now I'm out the money I paid for a week andi cancelled my other days and out the money for that also! No wonder there's so many openings around them! They sat and watched me! I broke down and cried after getting up for work at 5 am and not getting back til almost 5 pm and they didn't care. And the one time she looked and smiled was when I was leaving Riverside Loop! Don't recommend at all!! And I had to bring my own hand soap in the bathroom. My dog had a horrible experience. I followed all rules yet a dog was unleashed there and tried to come at my dog also while there. So tired of getting screwed out of money!! So I'm guessing they get to stay all year for free to help no one and chase people out! Real nice read more

Beautiful campground with sites that EASILY fit our 33 foot camper and two vehicles (ignore another review that says a 28 foot trailer won't fit---flat out false). Some sites are pull through which are a good 70 to 80 feet. All electric sites have 50 amp power. Since the sites are spaced well apart so you won't be camping right on top of your neighbors. If you need firewood or ice you can purchase it from the park and it will be delivered to your site. The bathrooms are new and clean with showers. There is also a family restroom. Outside the rest rooms there is a small library so take a book or leave one for someone else. You will also see a whiteboard listing upcoming events. The Friends of Schodack Island Park volunteers put on a number of events from open mic nights, car shows, music, ice skating (only in the winter of course), and there is usually food for sale (The local fire department usually does BBQ and fried dough). The Castleton Public Library also sponsors a movie night. The events are a distance from the campsite so noise is not an issue. There is also a sizable boat launch and boat trailer parking. There are pavilions for rent and plenty of nice places to sit by the river and enjoy the view. There are small display cases that feature art and poetry from local public school students. There are plenty of beautiful hiking trails. Whether making a day visit or camping, Schodack Island is really a gem. read more

When I say to my family, lets go to the park, this is where I mean. It's fairly close to my house with a beautiful spot on the river. Over the years they've made some pretty good improvements. The parking for the kayak launch has been improved with a much shorter carry to the water and more parking spots. They've got a beautiful new pavilion with its own parking lot and now they're working on putting in a campground. Down the trail from the main parking lot they are working on clearing a trail to the chimney from one of the old icehouses on the island. My only issue is the lack of trails along the water but hopefully that will be one of the next improvements. read more

This is my first time at the state park. Compared to many of the others I have stayed in, this is far superior because the roads are paved, their bathroom facility have showers as well as toilets. It is very very clean. All the sites are nice, although some of them being rather small and best suited for a tent, or a pop-up. What I liked about this campground is that the sites are not one on top of the other. You feel like you have some privacy. Which for me is important. Each loop has their own playground for youngsters. There is also a larger playground in the park down by the pavilions and day use picnic areas. They have a basketball court for the teenagers And volleyball nets for teenagers and adults. Because this campsite is on the Hudson River, there is a lot of space for casting a line in the water for fishing. There are several walking trails and plenty of places to ride your bike. There is a nice boat launch where you can also place your canoes or kayaks in. The only thing I was a little disappointed in was that there was no canoe or kayak rentals anywhere's in the area. They do sell wood here and it is cheaper than the bundles that are sold in the local area. You pay for it at the check-in and they deliver it to your site. I love the tables they have on each site. They not only accommodate a lot of people, but they have an extension on the tables for anybody who is handicapped. I will definitely be coming back here again in July. read more

It's more like 2-1/2 stars. Because it's new, the facilities are very nice and in good working order. The campsites themselves, however, leave much to be desired. The sites are basically cut into a tall-grass covered, swamp-like patch of land next to the Hudson. The sites provide little shade, little privacy, and I felt that most of the sites were rather tiny. Oh, and the BUGS!!! They REALLY needed to spray! (Perhaps they can't being right beside the river?) I was at a spot that said that the max vehicle length was 30 feet. Yup, that was about it!!! It was enough room for my 22 foot camper and BARELY enough to park my truck on sight.I upgraded my travel trailer later in the summer to a 28 foot model and, if I had it at the time, would have had to park my truck somewhere other than at the site. I like to try to get around to as many state parks as I can. Perhaps a decent place for city-dwellers who don't actually get out camping much, but I can't give it a good a recommendation for hardcore campers such as myself. There are SO MANY awesome NYS campgrounds. This is not one of them. read more

We travel full time in our Airstream. We have stayed in Schodack Island State Park two times. We have found it terrific, one of the cleanest parks we have stayed at, great recycling, book lending library and immaculate rest rooms. Staff obviously takes pride in their park. A great stop! read more

We loved this campground. Sites were a nice size with fire pit and picnic table. We have a 30 ft travel trailer with slides and had no problems and plenty of room. The bathrooms/ showers spotless and nice and new and not buggy. The office was wonderful. Denisse I believe was her name was so kind because we were running late and she said no problem with no attitude and Audrey as well was nice and helpful. You can kayak, fish or just relax on the Hudson side. We did a lot of biking and loved it. Tons of wildlife. Very quiet environment, not over crowded and no run down seasonal abandoned campers to be found. Highly recommend. Can't wait to go back. read more

We found this park while looking for places to camp on the Hudson River. The campground just opened in the Spring of 2016 so all the buildings, sites and roads are brand new. This is great news for the bathrooms/showers, but less so for the newly made sites. They're fine, but don't have that worn in feel of an old campground. We drove in and looked around before selecting a site, some are more open than others. The staff was super friendly and helpful, they will deliver firewood and ice to your site, just call the office. As others have mentioned, it would be nice to have more river access along the trails. The path to the Ice House Smokestack has been completed and it looks like one other viewpoint was started. I could hear eagles on the shoreline, but couldn't see them from the trail which was frustrating. If you're a stargazer you'll be happy to know that at 10:00PM they turn off all the lights next to the main field which makes for excellent viewing. We camped during the week and there seemed to be a lot of train traffic (both freight and commuter), maybe it's quieter on the weekends... read more

I must start by saying that we have not camped at this park. My husband and I drove to Schodack Island State Park to enjoy a Saturday (they were having a guided nature hike and then we wanted to check out the group use areas and the campground). While coming into the park area we drove through the campground check in and there were some campers waiting to check in but since we were just there for the state park scenery we slowly drove past the campers in the second lane. As we did, a woman from the campground screamed at our car and started chasing us down the road. We immediately stopped and tried to explain that we weren't here to camp just to enjoy the free nature hike that was starting soon and she yelled at us and told us that we couldn't just come in and that we weren't on the list on her registry. I completely understand wanting to know who is coming in and keeping the area safe for families but the entire interaction felt so interrogative and like we were on trial that it completely turned our nice outing into a bummer of a day. I would be worried about camping in the campground here if you have to explain yourself every time you come in and out of the state park. Definitely turned us off. read more

Lovely, local, state park. Has roofed area for group picnic. Mowed field for activites. Boat landing. A couple miles of forest walking trail. 6 dollars to park on the weekend. Free other times. Worth a ride out. Beautiful area, close to the river. read more
