I will never shop at Schuler's bookstore in michigan ever again after the RSD I witnessed. My first RSD and sadly probably my last. I made calls to multiple Record stores within the last 2 months prepping, planning on where I wanted to go. Schuler's seemed like the hidden gem no one goes to. I was told, along with several other people that they HONOR THE LINE. I showed up at 4am. I was second in line, made friends with the first and third in line who were also told they honor the line. at 8:45ish a man came out and took note of how many people wanted Taylor Swift only. I was hopeful I was getting my entire ISO and my oldest would get what they want to because again, 2nd in line. Doors open at 9am and the man who came out earlier announces free for all. At that point it became a safety issue, people running, pushing, hollering. I got everything I was after however they only had 1 copy of what Toby wanted and they sold out because of course. I called the grand rapids location, the GM was super nice, offered to send us the vinyl free if they had it in stock but sadly they had only gotten 1 as well and it sold out. I am so sad for my oldest because this was supposed to be a fun experience and because of one careless man, RSD has been forever tainted for us because I really don't want to risk sitting out from 4am-9am in the rain ever again just to be trampled on. read more

I have been frequenting the Lansing area for about 3 years now, and only recently found the bookstore. while i have found myself multiple times a week now for "used book appointments" and just to browse in general i cannot get over how infrequent the store is. employees never seem pleased to help, in fact they are talking about nonsense behind the counter more often than not and then seem bothered when you need to checkout. The used book venture is another topic. Online they have a number of parameters for the used books you bring in. some being "no library marking" and "no creased spines", they do not accept textbooks, bibles or magazines. I have personally seen all of those things on their shelves from the bible and religious text, to library markings. so it does bother me when I come in with books in good condition and am turned away, BUT then i go and those same books are on their shelves to be sold. make it make sense. read more

Shulers lost its charm when they moved to the bigger space in Okemos. It no longer feels like a place I want to hang out and the cafe has definitely lost its appeal too. I used to go to the cafe just to get their food, even when I was not in need of a book. The food was that good. Sad, because I much prefer doing business with small, local businesses. read more

They have tons of books! You'll be sure to find what you're looking for. The staff was nice and helped answer all 20 of my questions. but they are more expensive than somewhere like Amazon, but overall, I would rather shop at a bookstore because their tons of books. I probably never would've picked up if I saw them on Amazon. Plus, there is a cute little coffee shop! Haven't had a chance to try it out, but I hope to soon! read more

Great store. This is the way Borders, back in it's funky-college town, Ann Arbor-roots day, was. Borders whored itself out of course, landing in bankruptcy after it couldn't decide what it sold and why it sold it. I went her with the GF and was blown away by the concept of used and new books side by side. They have a really great cafe with tasty food and the staff. I very much like this store, at least the one in Grand Rapids, so I'm very disappointed in the Lansing store experience. I walked in looking for a cook book and the clerk was nice enough to walk me to the area. I couldn't find the specific cooking subject I was looking for and the service desk attendant was too engrossed in reading to help me initially. After getting the service / information attendants' attention from his book, he said he couldn't do a subject search or help me find whatever I was interested in. Before I could ask another question or try to give him a title of book, I was dismissed and he went back to his own book. I always loved this bookstore from when I was a kid. great used book selection, an exstensive new book selection, and great atmosphere. and it has a coffee shop attached! as the book store experience goes; it's well lit, clean, large selection of new and used books, +lots of extra stuff it sells as well. I personally love this book store because they have the best selection in the Okemos/Lansing area of books. Not only do they have a great selection, they have also a great little cafe inside that is perfect for meeting with friends and/or family. The best location is their meridian mall location because you can do some shopping at H&M or Macy's while reading a good book. read more

It's a nice bookstore, but they don't seem to offer an experience that keeps me from going to Amazon or the local coffeeshop. As bookstores go, it's big and a great place for Christmas or birthday shopping. As cafes go, it stinks. Everything is overpriced and just average quality. The seating area is old and dimly lit - and the Wi-Fi works only intermittently! When I asked why it kept cutting out, I was told to move (away from the outlets). Yet, the stronger signal kept resetting itself just the same. The good thing about this, of course, is that you can meet with your (study, bible, etc.) group comfortably - because no one is here!! Unremarkable experiences do not make for many repeat visits. read more

Schuler: the last good bookstore in the Lansing area. Do you need a trade paperback size copy Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Strange Pilgrims? No problem. Try finding the same book at a Barnes n' noble, and if you're lucky enough to find an associate who even knows your author, chances are they're not going to have the book anyway. Schuler, on the other hand, is for book lovers. Not only are they likely to have the book you want, they're likely to be able to sell it to you in hardcover or a few different paperbacks. I've ordered books from Schuler multiple times when the associate was also able to find a better copy of the book than the one I thought I wanted. If you hate books and people who read, keep ordering from Amazon- you'll be well served. If you like to read and care about your collection, or if you're buying a book for someone who does, head to Schuler and cut out the guess work and headache. read more

While C. and her brother were shopping for binoculars, her mom and I killed time in this mall bookstore. I spent most of my time in the magazine racks, which were wide ranging but not as all inclusive as those at your standard Barnes & Noble. Regardless, I picked up an issue of Maximum Rocknroll. One of the neat things about the store is that they stock new books, with a smaller selection of used books nearby. I flipped through the used science fiction paperbacks and didn't really see anything I wanted, but they did have a good selection. An interesting hybrid approach to bookselling. read more

I'm always thrilled there is still a strong local chain of bookstores with a range of materials. Lately it's become more and more generic with a higher proportion of non-book items, but I'm always pleasantly surprised with the less conventional book sections like essays, poetry and children's picture books They have lovely cafe to browse in - the fireplace is a treat - it has great atmosphere and nice cocoa, though rather bland and generic baked goods. Plus, they've started a print-on-demand self publishing arm which I hope will be a great addition to the local scene in time. read more

I grew up going to Schulers weekly and still love to visit the "new" location when I visit my hometown. The cafe is a wonderful place to grab lunch or read by the fire with a cup of tea. I particularly love the house quiche. Schuler Books staff are very knowledgeable and love to help recommend or find the book you're looking for. In recent years they've added a used book section which is awesome - if you're looking to buy a book or offload some you don't want to lug around anymore. If they don't have something in they will order it for you. A great local institution. Many of the staff members have been there since I was little and take pride in the service they provide the community. read more

This is the best of the book store options locally. They have a good selection of books and other random gifts including used books.

Ill start off with the good, they have a good selection of books and friendly staff. Food is okay, not great not bad. Pretty typical coffee shop stuff. So it does serve its purpose as a book store, and thus I rate 2 stars. My gripe with Schuler (not just the Okemos location) is that their music selection is consistently terrible. Honestly this probably plays a big role in my opinion because I frequently come to book stores to relax and browse some books and read a bit. They're always playing this acoustic folksy music that Im pretty sure is giving me cancer. Given there is good folk music out there but you won't find any here. This music makes it hard for me to lose myself in what Im reading and just all around makes me slightly more irritable. But enough about the music. Whoever sets up the displays either has poor taste or just doesn't care because I can never seem to find anything actually on display that interests me. I consider myself to have a pretty wide range of reading genres, anything from science fiction and fantasy to historical accounts and business. I don't think I've once picked up a book from a display stand here. Thats my opinion. Sure half the fun of book stores are getting lost in the book shelves but that God awful music really detracts. Maybe its the music irritating me, maybe its how the shelves are set up. But I always feel like it takes forever to find an interesting book here and half the time I end up without anything at all. Honestly once a month or so I will make the half hour drive out of my way to go across town to Barnes & Nobles because I find their atmosphere so much more relaxing and their displays so much easier to navigate and get lost in. In summary I still acknowledge that it has got a good selection and serves its purpose as a seller of books, but if you want to spend a few hours just hanging out I would recommend B&N or really anywhere else. read more

We shop at Schulers Books because we feel it is important to support local businesses, even if the prices are higher than purchasing online. While shopping together at the Eastwood store, my wife pointed out a book she would like, which happened to be on sale. The following day I visited the Okemos store, which is closer to my home, to buy the book. I was surprised to see that it was not on sale and asked the store personnel. They explained that each store manager has the autonomy to place items on sale and that I would have to return to the Eastwood store if I wanted to get the sale price. While still in the store, I brought up the book on the Barnes & Noble Web site and purchased it for the lower price with free shipping to my home. I am posting this as a review because, amaizingly, Schulers Web site does not have a portal or provide an email address to contact the store. read more

Always worth a visit when you're in the Meridian Mall. The store is very large and well decorated - a pleasure to walk through. The staff are always friendly. Their recent addition of used books is much appreciated. The used book prices are very reasonable and they have quickly built up a good selection. Their selection and pricing for new books is exceptional for a mall-bookstore, but nothing special compared to the larger standalone stores. The fact that it's a local business makes it preferable, though. read more

Well, I'm disappointed. I've been shopping at Schuler's for the past 7 years, at the Okemos location and Eastwood before it closed. I preferred Eastwood because I felt that everyone there was friendly and kind and the store was bigger and cozier. They ended up closing in January and I was devastated. I love supporting my local bookstore, even though the prices are much higher than you would find online. From now on I will not be purchasing anything from Schuler's. That's because they continued to ask me for my ID before I made any purchase, and at one point refused to let me buy anything because I used my mom's debit card. They told me that the company policy was to ask for an ID. So I wrote them an email that they didn't respond to and went on with my life. Keep in mind the Eastwood location never asked for my ID. So today I went out with my mom and we bought some books. And again they asked to see her ID, and at that point my mom was annoyed too. We're both adults and I see so reason to show my ID when buying a book. We decided to go back and see if they asked anybody else to see their ID and surprise surprise they didn't. A white woman came up and bought books and wasn't asked to show her ID. We returned the books we bought and are now done with them. Very sad Schuler's. Do better please. read more
