We went to pick up our new travel trailer today and was informed of an issue with our break controller on our 2007 Chevy. We were informed we couldn't take it without having it fixed. We have a whole weekend planned for camping! Our RV place told us to call Schuling Hitch. We told them our story and even tho they were booked solid today they told us to come in ASAP. We were greeted right away and told to give them 30 to see what was going on. They looked over the truck and found the issue was our fuse box. The technician had us fixed in no time and gave us a quick lesson on how the break controller works. We were expecting an enormous bill and was thrilled with a $32.86 charge. My husband and I were traveling to DM on our way to the southwest US. We were driving our Jeep that we tow behind our RV and got hit by a car. The accident caused our tow bar to get bent which meant it wouldn't be towable. We stopped by Schuling to see if they could replace it and they did so immediately. They were very helpful. Over the years I have had several hitches, a very nice 4 bike rack system, and a heavy duty motorcycle carrier installed by Schuling Hitch Company of Des Moines and have been very pleased with their products and installation. Now it's time to replace that motorcycle on the back of our Motor Home with a Jeep Wrangler to be towed 4 down - and it's a major change and cost with all the components required. I spent weeks reviewing what was available, what the best was of each, and what it all would cost. I decided I would buy most of the components on-line at a cheaper discounted cost and buy only a few of the major components from Schuling that they had in stock - and install them myself. I met with Tyler Schuling to buy only a few of the components and left with a price on "all the components", which with his discounted price -"including installed" - was less than what I had already calculated was the cheapest way to go with online discounted pricing and installing it all myself. We went to UHaul for a hitch for our GMC Terrain. Made an appointment and arrived promptly at 9 am only to be told that the person who would be doing the work "usually comes in around 10." Now mind you there is no waiting area and the location in Des Moines was in a pretty sketchy part of town. When I asked why after making an appointment there would be such a time differential, I was told that "most people drop their car off". Also if we waited it would take 2 to 3 hours to install. We asked for our money to be refunded to our credit card and left. I looked around online and found Schuling's and read a few really positive reviews. (why didn't I research this beforehand, facepalm) . Long story short they installed a name brand hitch (Reese) for fifty dollars less that UHaul was going to charge me in 45 minutes. And they have a nice waiting area. Professional, friendly, helpful, patient with all my questions. Really a first class operation. read more

I needed a hitch Installed on my car for a bike rack I plan on getting. Came here due to all the positive reviews. Drove up & was immediately taken in. While inside I asked the lady at the desk her opinion on the bike racks they sold. She went through all of the different models they carried. Took my van to get a trailer brake controller installed and they did a good job on that but when I got my van back my windshield wipers weren't turning off when I turn my key off and my battery stays on when I turn my key off too. It wasn't doing that before I took it in there so I brought it to their attention and they took another look at it and couldn't find what they did wrong and told me there was nothing they could do. Did a good job on the brake controller but not owning up to something they obviously did is an absolute turn off. Not recommended. read more

It's nice to find a business that does just one thing, and does it really well. I got a quote to have a hitch receiver installed on my new car. They told me it would take 45 minutes and cost $159. And, sure enough, it took 45 minutes and cost $159. There were no fees for extra parts. There was no "environmental impact surcharge". At no point did they encourage me to get my power steering fluid flushed. Also, the waiting room is nice- there's a TV to watch, and plenty of trailer hitches, racks, and brochures to look at. read more

After dealing with the nightmare of U-haul. Who, when calling for a hitch quote insisted on giving them a credit card number to hold the "only" hitch in stock. This happened at 2 locations. One of the locations being the u-haul hitch supercenter. Yeah, they only had one hitch in stock. Installation would be 2 to 3 hours. My Husband found Schuling hitch. Not only was their quote much cheaper than U-haul, they did not try and force a sale on us. This is a big deal to me. I DO NOT like pressure sales. Our appointment was at 3:30. I got there at 3:20, they drove my car right in. I was only 1 chapter into my book when they told me my car was done. Less than 30 minutes and done. Hitch looks professionally put on. Like it had always been part of my car. Close to $50.00 cheaper than U-Haul. I would and have already recommended Schuling Hitch to people. Keep up the good work. U-Haul, sorry for your bad luck. I took my 2016 Durango to the Des Moines location on 12/21/16 to have them professionally install a wiring harness for my cargo carrier. During the installation of the wiring harness they had to remove both taillight assemblies and at some point they scratched the paint around the taillight assemblies. Not only did they not make me aware of the damage at the time it happened they are refusing to cover the cost of getting the damages fixed professionally. My vehicle had just over 4000 miles on it at the time of the repair and they are telling me that they didn't cause the damage even though they admit they had to remove the taillight assemblies to perform the wiring installation. read more
