Having worked in the area for a dozen years, ABP and Scola's were the only lunch options in this neighborhood for many, many years. More recently the food scene around the drydock has improved tremendously, and while ABP has left the building, Scola's is still with us - like Old Faithful - serving up their giant sandwiches on their famous Scola bread. Having not been there in a while (maybe a year) I decided to walk over with a friend to grab some lunch today. Lunchtime is very busy, so there was a pretty long line, but they are very efficient at getting orders placed quickly. While I had been thinking about their giant chicken parm sandwiches, or maybe one of their famous potato & egg subs, their friday special "Haddock and Mac-n-cheese caught my eye, and were selling out quickly. The "mac" was actually medium sized pasta shells, in a thick cheesy sauce, with 3 large chunks of battered and fried juicy haddock. Rounded out the order with some onion rings (which turned out to be the only disappointing part). Go for the food, the large portions for the $, and the subs on their famous Scola rolls (excellent). Don't go for the ambiance - It's a sandwich shop after all, with a blue collar vibe, busy and hectic. Get take-out. Step out of line if you're indecisive and don't know what to order. The Mac-n-Haddock I had today was great, but I'm still thinking about their subs, so will be back for lunch someday soon. read more

So I work right above Scola's...therefore it's kind of hard not to smell the food from there and want to go there. Also, there if the fact that there isn't anything else around here!! The Good: The sandwiches here are decent. I recently had a sandwich that I have become in love with, it's called the hot turkey sub, or what I would like to call a little bit of thanksgiving heaven on a roll. It's got all the fixings of a thanksgiving dinner all rolled up in one. If you like Thanksgiving definitely give this one a try. The salad are alright as well, nothing extraordinary. Also, I have never waited longer than 5-10 minutes for my dish. The Bad: If you don't mind people touching your food as well as your money...then you won't have a problem, but if you are a germophobic don't come here. I am always weary about this, but I still eat it anyways...lol. Also they only take cash! The Ugly Truth: If there were any immediate options around, besides Au Bon Pain, which is about a 10 minute walk for me, then I would definitely consider it. Ok. I have never walked out of a place so many times. I've ventured here out of desperation because of the lack of food options in Drydock, where I work five days a week. this place is a long, cold walk down a pier from where I work. I've taken that walk several times- My coworkers usually decide to get something, and I step aside and stay hungry. its that bad. Scola's - I'm done giving you chances. Worst Experience- -i asked for a "falafel" sandwich, which they put "chipotle sauce" on. I asked what that was and the owner condescendingly replied down his nose "Ya know- its buffalo sauce and mayo". So then i asked not to have chipotle "Mayo" on my sandwich-(first off- the ASian guy taking my order didnt even know what falafel was)-he pointed me to the owner. i got interrupted before I finished my modification.i walked a quarter mile back to work before i discovered the sauce on my sandwich. When i returned, the asian man behind the counter who I ordered with- ARGUED WITH ME. saying he left the "chipotle sauce" on the falafel because I asked for no "Chipotle mayo". I have over ten years experience in everything from fine dining to burger shacks- YOU NEVER ARGUE WITH A HUNGRY GUEST! this happened to me twice in a row. Pros- -cool location. -good scala rolls -post-consumer waste napkin dispenser. -candy by-the-bag bins. -endearing cashier woman, i feel bad for her- she's sweet and has an unnecessarily difficult job due to major workplace inefficiency. Cons- -Dont expect knowledge of the menu or its ingredients, its a different thing to the person taking your order, than it is to the person making the order behind the line. -expect the ignorant egos behind the counter to play the "not my fault" game before even trying to find a solution that pleases the paying guest. -cash only. -as is expected from most run-of-the-mill sub shops; it is VERY evident they prefer to cut costs by getting bulk depot buckets of food. Solid reliable lunch spot. Average reliable food although I appreciate the operational efficiency most. That's an important feature for an under-served lunch crowd that's also pressed for time. Food - Chicken parmigiana is decent as is the steak and cheese sandwich. Food lacks a bit on flavor (seasoning). Decor - Nothing fancy but it seemed clean, well-kept, and organized. If you don't work in the area, then the highlight would be the view of the water (with seagulls, barges, containers and cranes, and cruise ships). Service - Fast and friendly. Best subs anywhere. Can't believe the negative reviews here from germaphobes. The eggplant is amazing and the Italian subs are the real deal with imported stinky provolone. Subs are huge and on fresh scali rolls (sour dough bread? whoever wrote that doesn't have a tastebud in his mouth) Prices are outstanding especially for meals. And the sauce is HOMEMADE with real bits of tomatoes. Honestly I can't believe what people have written about Scolas here. I drive from 10 miles away to get my sandwiches. My only complaint is I wish they were open later and on weekends so I could eat there for dinner, too! read more

I know they are predominantly a fish and chips, basic sandwich shop, but in the 4-6 or so times I've been there, I've been so turned off by the entire experience. Unfortunately, these guys and ABP own the lunch market out on Drydock, where there is little option in dining to begin with. -They do not know how to manage a line, handle orders, or communicate whatsoever. --They scream at your face "WHO'S NEXT?!" when you're not even in line, then start placing the order to the cooks before you finish your order, talking over your request to maybe not have mayo, etc. -By the time the food is ready, no one has any idea whose order it is or what it is, I find myself repeating my order at least 3 times each time I go there because their whole flow is completely wrong. -Most importantly, they don't even know their own menu, have argued with me about what is in a sandwich, ingredient, or sauce, and don't even bother listening to the order in the first place. A perfect place to catch food poisoning, I think.. I won't be going back anymore. read more

I have been here many times for no other reason but its convenient location. I do not recommend the food as it is either overpriced for the portion you get or its past its expiration date. Cross contamination is a constant here as all the employees have been seen handling cash and food without washing their hands in between. Also make sure you have plenty of cash as prices seem to change frequently (like from one customer to the next). I would highly suggest another restaurant in the area, unless you enjoy wasting your money. read more

Blackenned chicken pasta was a favorite where I worked. Their double cheeseburger is amazing. Not everything is apetizing there, but you have to pick and choose, it's all about personal taste. For instance, the eggplant parmasan sandwich with pastrami was not for me. read more

I work in the building where Scola's is located. Although my fellow co-workers turn up their noses at Scola's, I think that the quality of the food is "good enough". It is definitely usual Boston sandwich shop fare, and you can't really have high expectations. I will say that their breakfast is definitely much better than lunch. The huge egg sandwich is the best with there homemade rolls. A long time ago I was a bike messenger that got sent to pick up a sandwich at Scola's in the north end. It is Old School and although everything I ever had here is more thank fine the Potato & Egg sandwich variations are museum quality! Not a bad place to grab a quick lunch. I work in the building so it is really the only option if time is of the essence. They've got a typical selection of subs and sandwiches, same stuff you'd find in any sub shop in the Boston area. I recommend the blackened chicken wrap (make sure you request no cheese otherwise you'll be greeted with about 4 slices of plastic American cheese) and the California chicken wrap. I tried the fish on friday. One would assume a lunch spot on the water in Boston could get fish and chips right!! It was the nasty thing I have ever tasted. On top of that the place screamed "I am Dirty". Even the french fries made me sick. I wouldn't feed this to my dog, in the chance it would kill him!!!!! read more
