Off 11 miles from highway 151 ....near Cornell College in quaint downtown Mount Vernon we found Scorz. We stopped because they had tenderloins it was a cute little sports bar with TVs a bar regular tables and high top tables and the food was just perfect. read more

I have visited this location multiple times and have tried several dishes and have not had a bad experience. This location being in a college town occasionally will fill up with college students but that is either late at night or on a rare occurrence like home coming. There is usually a mix of families and students. There is plenty of room of any size group from 1 to many. They have tables of various sizes plus a large bar seating area. There is a pool table and a juke box along with the gambling machines where you can win tickets to pay your tab. There is also a few coin operated video games. The noise level can be load at times which could be the several TVs they have all around. The servers are usually college students and they have always been courteous and prompt. The food is good and you get a healthy amount, they do not skimp on the fries. The prices for the meals are comparable to most places, but be warned they may charge you for some extras like ranch. Apparently this place burned down once a while back. They should have left it that way. This is probably the biggest place in downtown Mt. Vernon, and it has a pool table and numerous TV's in all of the places that TV's should be in a bar like this. That's it for the upside though. I'm not a snob or purist by any means, but there are a few things that I look for when I head to a pub and this place fails miserably in all of them. What are they? 1) Decent beer selection. Scorz fails because outside of the lone Sam Adams tap, the rest of the bar is nothing but Bud, Bud Light, etc. In other words, don't come here if you actually enjoy drinking beer. 2) Decent Happy Hour. At first, I thought it looked alright...then I was charged normal prices during happy hour. Sad. 3) Decent Pub Grub. I had no illusions when I came here, and I knew I was going to order food and that it probably wasn't going to be the best food I'd ever eaten. Still, I was shocked by how pathetic their fish basket was. The fish looked like it was some sort of white gel sandwiched between two pieces of cardboard, the fries were crinkle cut fries that you can get for $.50 at the grocery store and the cole slaw plopped right out of a bucket that the 'cook' threw from the kitchen into the trash...through a caddy-corner area of the bar/kitchen. 4) Decent Service. Actually, it wasn't bad. It wasn't great either though, and I was one of four people in the entire bar that night. So, that made it seem worse than it was I guess. Basically, Scorz is like a cougar. It might look good on the outside, it might even seem like a fun place to hang out for a bit, but ultimately it's just lipstick on a pig. For what it's worth, I can see the potential for it being the kind of bar that bro's and their lady friends flock to on a busy night. I'm not sure if that makes it any more attractive, but whatever you do, DO NOT EAT HERE. Ever. read more

Took niece and her two sons there for lunch on a Sunday, Very quiet place. Service was good. Food slow in coming but the boys played a game a pool while we waited. This is located in the middle of town, free street parking available. Quaint sports bar! You can see a tv just about anywhere you sit. Families were here with their kids, so I'd say it's family friendly! We stopped in for lunch on a Sunday, football on every tv! Prices are VERY reasonable! Food was also very good! Scorz opened during the 2007-2008 school year, only to be shut down for repairs after the place caught fire just a few months after opening. This earned it the nickname "Scorches" by more than a few people. It has now re-opened again in early 2009. The two stripper poles supporting the bar are still danced upon after someone's had a bit much to drink. There are a number of HD, flat screen TVs which generally have sports on, there's a billiards table, a juke box, a smattering of tables and ample standing room. The bar itself has three sides each about 8'-10' long and is manned by anywhere from 1 to 5 bartenders. This much surface space and ample standing room is mandatory on weekends, college alumni weekends and pledging. While the maximum occupancy is 69, on weekends there are well over 100 people and getting through a sea of bodies becomes a challenge. There is a grill that is open until 9pm, which serves pretty decent food for a not horrendous price. The drinks do range on the overpriced side, but because of all the "specials" they have it doesn't seem like you're paying that much. Rum & Cokes will be made with Pepsi unless you specify. Shooters, while yummy, can cost upwards of $6. The beer is mostly to cater to college students (I do believe there are at least 3 or 4 light beers). read more

When I want a burger I go to Scorz. My wife and I drove to Mt. Vernon to go to the Lincoln Cafe, but it was too busy so we walked down the street and thought we'd try Scorz. We have been glad ever since that this happened because outside of the Hamburg Inn, I believe they have the best burgers in the area. Very good food excellent service. Highly recommend everyone to eat here if in the area. Got the egg sandwich and was baffled by how good it was. Burger cooked perfectly and fries were delicious. The service is bad - we've always had to wait at least 30 min for our food. Apparently the kitchen cooks one order at a time. The restaurant is always freezing cold. Most people are eating with their coats on. The sandwiches are pretty good, esp, the tenderloin. Not many choices for dinner or if you don't want a sandwich. If they'd turn up the heat and speed up the kitchen, it would help immensely. read more
