Been going to this gym for several years now. The gym is fairly well-equipped, and I use only free weights and a couple basic machines. My biggest complaint is the total lack of gym etiquette. The place is overrun with folks who spend more time texting on their phones than they do working out. It is not uncommon to see 2 or 3 teens occupying a station for 20 minutes or more while they jabber, text, and eat snacks. Often a station is "reserved" by leaving personal items in place while whoever left them is socializing elsewhere. Sometimes you have to watch where you walk to avoid stepping on somebody's cell phone, water bottle, etc. The owner circulates around and does nothing to enforce any sort of gym courtesy. Too bad because it's an old school gym....Dave Draper would be rolling in his grave if he spent time there today. read more

I'm trying to move to a yearly membership and until today 15 days later still no answer from all the emails I sent so disappointing

When I walked in the first time I was intimidated by all of the free weights and plates, not a lot of cable machines which is where I was comfortable. I kept showing up and I met Marie, one of the trainers. I worked with her for a couple of weeks and she got me into working with the weights and into a solid routine. Now I come 5 days a week. I love this gym! Got outside of my comfort zone and am now reaping the rewards of a strong body and mind. Kudos. read more

I like this gym. It's a nice mix of folks from bodybuilders to novices. No pretentious attitudes that I've detected, staff is helpful and friendly, and although I spend most of my time up in the cardio loft, there are a nice mix of machines, and another room with floor space for planks, sit-ups and such, and a bunch of punching and kicking bags. Plus once you're a member you can literally go at any time with your key card. Oh and there's 2 outside areas to exercise, which is fun to watch while I'm in the leg room. Well my husband and I joined this gym a year ago when our gym active closed. At first we were excited about the 24hr always open. We started going 3-4 days a week until Covid hit.. we wanted to support the gym so we didn't freeze our membership so we were charged for 4 months until the gym reopened with restrictions. They did provide cleaning supplies with signs saying wear a mask in and wipe down your equipment. At first people were being good but went down hill fast. I watched people going from machine to machine not wiping equipment including one of the owners. I complained to one of the owners but nothing changed. Also moms started dropping off groups of teenagers no social distancing. Finally a lot of equipment is old and some of the machines broken. We finally called to cancel our membership because we don't feel safe with there protocol. A little bit of attitude with the cancellation. But we're done they got hundreds of dollars from us when shut down. read more

This review covers: the dirt, the blood, the mold, the owners, the scams, the stealing, and the overall disfunction and carelessness that this gym is. The biggest problem with the gym is that it's absolutely disgusting. Dirt, blood, dead bugs, mold, more dirt, they have it all! Blood has been left on the floor on multiple occasions. One spot of blood was left for 3 weeks. Dead bugs on the floor for days. If you talk to anyone who is currently at the gym (2019) they will all say it's filthy. I haven't seen anyone in the gym cleaning since September 2018. The gym has basic equipment so if that's all you need it fine but everything is dirty. The atmosphere as a whole also isn't great. The owners don't say hi when they are in the gym or when you come through the door. Complaints are ignored. Inappropriate, uncomfortable, and awkward videos are played on the big TV in the weight area. Equipment is constantly breaking. The bathrooms were redone, not well and never finished. The bathrooms are not cleaned. On top of that for the month that the bathrooms were being redone they had two Port-a-potties outside the front door with no sink or way for people to wash their hands. Owners have been shown all the issues by multiple people and nothing is done to resolve anything besides canceling the memberships of the people who complain. They also hired a manager who was fired from another gym for stealing thousands from clients so I would not trust them with your credit card information. The owners are trying to get the most money possible out of their clients including scamming people with their memberships which you can read more about in other reviews. They overcharge constantly and won't fix the issue unless you complain multiple times. The ads are also a scam offering memberships that seem like a deal until you read the fine print or between the lines. The online ads show pictures that aren't even of the gym or the trainers. read more

Warning!!!!Very disappointed that i tried to cancel my membership before the yearly dues where credited due to the fact thst my military training doesnt allow me enough time to attend the SVG. My phone call wasnt returned, the answering service said I can only cancel it via an email which I sent several. I was charged $160 for the new year which i wont attend enen one time, and they continue to charge me $64 per month. They should return my membership fee for this new year and stop charging me. I just feel like when they want you to join they call you rigbt back and then when you try to quit, they make it impossible and keep trying to charge until im left with no other choice but to call my bank. Not good to rip off people that no longer want to be a part of your business. read more

Pros: -Only $55/month (compared to $88 at the other gym in Scott's Valley) -The staff was very welcoming when I came in for a trial (compared to the other gym inSV that I checked out; both front desk staff were abrasive and unaccommodating when I came in to inquire about the gym) -Pretty much have all the equipment you could need (as opposed to the the other gym that did not have barbells) -Two TVs in front of treadmills -Not busy at all; even during typical rush hour gym-time -open 24 hours/day (as opposed to the other local gym which closes at 8) -they did a major decor update; no longer are there a ton of bodybuilder pics from 1970;) Cons: -only 5 treadmills, 2 of which make loud thumping noises when you run anything over 7 mph, and you can't plug into the tv radios because it creates a ton of static shock. -no real stretch area. You can do this anywhere but there isn't really a designated spot. All in all, I'm very happy coming here. It's a great little community. read more

If I could I would give 0 star. The gym it self doesn't have a good air conditioning. All the cardio machines are upstairs and with the poor air conditioning its always stuffy and hot up there. The owner doesn't accept cancellation at all. I signed up and only after 2 weeks I had a medical condition which prevented me from work out. So I went there and asked to cancel my membership since the recovery time was unknown. However the owner refused to refund me! They charged me for the registration fee and the fist month. Which I never used the gym in that 2 weeks! Worst place ever! read more

I come up to Mt. Hermon every Labor day weekend and have been going a gym down the street every time I come. That being said thank god I found this gym. Imagine Powerhouse Gym mixed with Anytime Fitness. I came in late Friday evening Labor day weekend and the owner and manager were not going to be available much this weekend to get me a pass since i like to workout super early. After talking to them over the phone they decided to hide a key to they gym for me and took a week pass payment over the phone!!! I mean what commercial gym would do that for anyone. It was awesome that they jumped through so many hoops to support my gym addiction and I appreciate them for doing so. About the gym...all the machines and free weights you could need plus a powerlifting area with bumper plates, and all though I didn't use it a nice looking cardio area upstairs. I've been a member here for years. I discovered it when it was originally Dave Draper's place. Everything that people complain about, the ratty & the raw, is what's great about it. It's not a social club, it's not somewhere you go to be seen...it's just a purist's dream: more weights than machines & a no-bs approach to fitness. I live 2000 miles from Scotts Valley.Their attempts at charging me are unauthorised by me, but they still attempt to charge me for a service that they do not provide me. They also failed to provide a personal trainer that they charged me 100s of dollars for and yet have not given me a refund. I've asked then to not attempt to steal more money from me as they already have, but they still attempt to charge me. Walking into their gym was a HUGE mistake. VERY unethical! read more

Under new management but the only new thing is poor customer service it's certainly not new equipment. I tried to quit the gym when I got laid off and because of the horrible phone system and unempowered staff, it took a month and $37 I could have used elsewhere. Let me preface this by saying that I'm not a typical gym user, this is the first gym I've ever belonged to...so my experience is limited. BUT, from what I've seen at other trial gym memberships, Scotts Valley Gym is definitely the most comfortable, non "gym" atmosphere I can remember. Their prices are very reasonable, about $50 per month, but reduced if you pay for a 3 month or annual membership. The staff are extremely helpful and very friendly! This was a really important quality for me, since I was a little apprehensive about taking the plunge with a gym membership. I've now been a consistent gym user for almost a year, and I feel good about my workout every time I leave Scotts Valley Gym. It's not a huge gym, but it seems to be just right. I never have any issues getting on the treadmill, and the other folks are accommodating about the TV channel (there are two communal TVs in the upstairs area). All in all, if you're looking for a new gym and don't want to feel like you're being ogled or judged, this is the gym for you. Scotts Valley Gym is exactly what I was looking for :) read more

Been going to this gym for almost a year now and I cannot wait until my contract is up. I'm regretting signing up for the full year. I come in the mornings only so part of my review is based on that. Pros: This gym is slightly and I mean slightly cheaper than other gyms in town but for what it offers it's not worth it. The free weights are decent and will suit your weightlifting needs. Cons: This gym is incredibly dirty. I've been dirty I've worked dirty jobs but still this is gross to me, it's like it doesn't get cleaned. Bathrooms are foul, overflowing trash, dirty counters, can barely see yourself in the mirror, and the paper towel dispenser is always empty. And this is always while at least one owner is there and 2-3 personal trainers. Second point the personal trainers, every morning they are there working out and talking with each other, no problem except for the fact they hog all the main non-broken equipment in the middle of the gym and they just talk and talk and talk and talk all morning. Ridiculous, all the while no one can stand behind the counter to help people if needed. Third, the broken equipment, they charge outrageous prices for what they offer and out of the five treadmills upstairs at least three are always broken or skip when you try to run on them. The place looks run down and you'll find out if you work out here that it actually is. Finally, customer service, what's that? This place sure doesn't know. If you call the gym you get sent to an answering service that can't actually do anything for you other than say they will pass on the message and then you'll be lucky if you get a call back from someone. I'm on day three waiting still to talk about how long I have left in my year contract. Honestly don't go here, there are better gyms in Scott's valley that offer better classes, better childcare, better equipment, better CUSTOMER SERVICE. Can't wait to get out of this nightmare gym. PS don't ever touch your skin to anything other than a mat or a bench you have wiped off yourself you'll get fungal infections like I've seen others get and complain of here. read more

I have been coming here for a year... not a regular yet. I rehabbed some injuries and paid for a training package. It was pretty a awesome experience. I also loved that if you dont "look" like a professional gym type you are not given the stare down. You can come in your sweat pants and tshirt and be just fine. The people clean up after themselves and they often say hi or just smile. Not a lot of pressure which is great. I do a lot of different types of work outs due to my injuries, so I dont usually work specific things on specific days. I work a little of everything each time with a focus on not over doing it. No one corrects me or anything. Another thing that is super is I paid for the full year and got a great discount. Seems good to me! Very relaxed friendly atmosphere with no pressure. I have been going here on and off for about 6 months. This was exactly what I was looking for when I joined as I walked in, walked around and signed up that day. Some machines, some free weights, cardio upstairs and lots of room to move in between everything. Everyone is friendly, the crowd is usually small even at peak times and the folks that go all seem very "local" feeling, not corporate or there to impress. I have lots of injuries, I tend to stick to the cardio upstairs, but when I am downstairs, I couldn't ask for a better place to go to get a workout. read more

I don't like this place, you probably won't either. The old bald guy (OBG) that works the front desk is rude and difficult. The place smells terrible. And the equipment, specifically the cardio stuff, is always broken. OBG is rude and difficult. The man might have a speech impediment(mumbles and quiet), which I don't fault him for if he does, but this is the person that describes the year long contract you are entering. You will not be able to understand the terms and conditions as he describes them. Now there are penalties for violating these terms so it would be nice to be able to have them clearly explained. OBG tonight was also incredibly rude to me. When I entered the building he turned and said curtly "what do you want?" Which was the first time I have been able to clearly understand him. I said, "I need my key fob replaced." He glared at me and said "what's the magic word?" I said, "what?" And his reply was "say please." I pay to come to this place. I don't pay to be talked to like a five year old. Also if you are hunting down manners maybe start off with not being rude to incoming customers. The entire interaction lacked of professionalism. As for the place, it smells like a septic frequently. Right out front it smells like an open septic. Disgusting. The equipment is mostly functional, but most of the cardio stuff is old, and some of it is broken. There are better options for a gym. I will seek a new gym when my contract finishes. Hello community friends, I cant say enough good things about Scotts Valley Gym! The owners are amazing the staff is great they all are very welcoming and helpful. The equipment is nice and new as well as kept clean which is a plus! They also have a spa room upstairs! The thing I really like about this gym is the diversity of people who work out here the atmosphere is really comfortable.I started working out here a little over a month ago. I'm 29 years old and had never stepped foot into a gym prior to coming here not only was I intimidated of going to the gym but super self conscious about what people would think looking at me trying to workout when I had no idea what I was doing lol Never once got that feeling here felt so comfortable right away. Which is a huge deal for me! This gym really has helped me overcome feeling that way and has given me the want to keep going on my fitness journey. I honestly wouldn't be going if it wasn't for the motivation Ive received from the staff and owners there. It's really been life changing! Full gym, tall ceilings, clean and with good price and flexibility on membership -- deals often. Friendly ownership and 24/7 access. Martial arts room with punching bags, equipment, trex, plenty of weight lifting equipment, multiple racks and ample deadlift station. Cardio upstairs and some rowing machines downstairs. I'm so glad this gym remained open. The improvements made since its previous ownership are nice. This place has a nice neighborhood feel where you can go and get your workout done without any hassle. Members actually chat with each other here! The machines are maintained well enough and the staff is friendly. The cardio machines could be updated, but the ones they have work well. This place is a scam! I was nearly finished with my year contract and they took money out of my account two days before they were supposed to. My account is now over drawn because of it. The guy at the front desk said I had to pay the new membership fees even though I told him that I didn't want a new membership. I love this gym. The laid back atmosphere is where it's at. No one looks at you funny, no one judges you. The trainers are knowledgeable and friendly, very encouraging and professional. I worked with Mike and he's awesome. I just work out on my own now and go in the mornings and sometimes afternoons/evenings. It's never that busy and if it is busy, it's never crowded! I love that about this place. The people that go there are chill and everyone just smiles and carries on with their workout. No ego, no stares, just working out and friendly faces!
