I love you, SCRAP PDX! It's a wonderful feeling to just walk through the doors, knowing you'll be among creatives of all kinds, knowing you'll find some treasure you needed for that project you've been working on, then finding another little thing that sparked an idea of something to make, then making your way to the counter to pay, then leaving by the door you came in, hurrying to get home so you can get back to your project and maybe even start another one. SCRAP is a boost to the imagination in ways one can only imagine (hehe), all the while helping the environment by keeping stuff out of landfills. It's a great place to donate all those things you thought you were gonna use for something or other but never got around to it and now don't want to do it. I found some watercolor tubes I'd been wanting to try out - one almost-full tube had a $20 price tag still on it - I paid $4! Scrap is such a great idea! Scrap takes donations on craft supplies that may otherwise be thrown out. They have just about anything and everything you can think of. Everything was very well organized and put together. The only quarrel I have with scrap is that they frequently change donation information. For example I came to donate a few things and they asked that I come back the following Thursday which I did - Upon arrival the following Thursday they had tried to turn me away but I explained that this was technically my 3x there and thankfully they took the donation. read more

Scrap is great. They are all about reuse, taking almost anything you can imagine and selling it back to the community at a low cost for crafting. My wife and kids love coming here and perusing the store, picking out random treasures to bring home for projects. They also have a space that can be rented out for groups, which comes in handy for birthday parties. We'll be back. read more

I don't know about you, but like many, I'm trying to own less stuff. I try to use what I own and not collect stuff for "someday." Throughout the years, I've found that I thought I'd do some cool craft or diy project only to end up storing the supplies for years and years. Enter SCRAP PDX. If you like to reduce, reuse, or recycle, you'll love SCRAP! My first experience with scrap was over 10 years ago when they were located on MLK. Several years ago they moved to a location downtown. It's a cool store. They have a classroom and super cool humans working there - I believe they are all volunteers. They're tagline is "Because creative expression shouldn't break the bank or the environment." Yes please! They are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to inspire creative reuse and environmentally sustainable behavior by providing educational programs and affordable materials to the community. I've sent people to SCRAP to donate and to buy. I've taken out-of-town visitors to shop to their hearts content. You never know what you might find, but you can depend on finding lots of art supplies and random collections of things. Today I visited because another volunteer organization that I volunteer for, which has little to no budget, is doing an in person awards event, and just like the Academy Awards, we want our presenters to be able to say "...and the envelope please..." We needed about 2 dozen envelopes. I looked online and found lots of great options at various retailers, some for as little as $8. I spent $2.50 at SCRAP. Some of the cool things I saw during today's visit, lots and lots of various sizes, colors and quantities of gift boxes, lots of buttons, bows, gift bags, lanyards (the kind you hang around your neck that can hold a badge or id card, boxes business size envelopes (other sizes too). There were people shopping for fabric and yarn. I saw shoppers buying frames and scrap-booking supplies. Honestly, there is lots of other random things in various quantities, if you are creative, you'll love it! I highly recommend you visit when you are feeling creative or need some supplies. I also recommend you take people visiting from out of town because most places don't have someplace as cool as SCRAP. read more

I came here for the first time today and already can't wait to go back. This store is amazing! They have so much to choose from and something for everyone. I ended up coming home with some acrylic paints and metallic and multicolored thread, both of which I am incredibly excited for. I wish it was closer to where I live because it's truly amazing here but at the same time it's probably good they aren't closer because I would end up with a house full of crafting supplies. There is paid street parking and no public restroom. The minimum credit card payment is $3, which isn't hard to hit when there's so much good stuff to choose from. I love love LOVE this place! It feels like a treasure hunt the second you walk in. Shelves and buckets of miscellaneous craft supplies and treasures just waiting to be recycled as far as the eye can see! Organization is...well...not their strongest suit. There are some spots that you can pretty easily find some organization, but it is clearly a source of a lot of fun for younger patrons, and so things can be a little untidy. Far from holding this against them, I feel like it makes the adventure more fun! I got a used frame, three pieces of art, and 4 bundles of funky fuzzy yarn for under 30 bucks. I think that's a screaming deal. Staff here are also very friendly and nice. I will definitely be back again in the future! read more

Big fan of SCRAP. Can't even think how to describe it but essentially, if you need something and you don't know where to go to get it or if you just need one (or you need many but slightly different), this might be the place to find it, especially for crafting, but not necessarily exclusively for crafting. My spouse just bought an old Royal typewriter although I suppose that may fall into the arena of art. I got a few little yarn remnants for a scrap-ghan I'm making - each priced at 50¢-$1. And they take donations! Have a bunch of art or craft supplies for hobbies that didn't do it for you? Give them a second chance at SCRAP. read more

I used to LOVE Scrap, but prices went up for some items (yarn) and quality of merchandise and organization has gone down. I still stop in from time to time, but instead of spending an hour browsing, I can quickly move through the store and leave with just a few items. This is quite a store. Scraps is a good name because there are lots of scrap stuff. I believe items are donated to the store and they have many volunteers marking, stocking and selling. Items can be new, used or in pieces but many are unique. It's an artist's, crafter's, scrapbooker or beader's great find. You can find craft paint, sewing odds'n ends, office supplies and a little bit of just about everything. Some of the items have a price so low you feel like you're stealing it. However, it seems recently other items have a little higher price than they used to. Are the prices creeping up? Maybe. Either way, it's a great place to dig through their bins or shelves. You just never know what's going to be there from one to time to another. That in itself will keep taking you back there. We loved the store and ended up with lots to take home with us. read more

So if a girl decides to make some tentacles, this should be easy enough, right? Pool noodles can be carved into shape; coat hangers untwisted and up the middle makes them bendable. But how, oh how to contrive suction cups? I was certain that Scraps could come to my rescue. I toured the entire Portland store, looking for round flattish things of the right sizes. And sure enough, there's an entire bin if plastic bottle caps and jar lids. A dollar for a shopping bag full! I picked out all the smaller plastic caps and took them home to hot-glue to my tentacles. I hate to do this. I have been shopping at SCRAP since the beginning in 1998, and have donated materials for sale, including one donation that brought in hundreds of dollars in sales. The selection is still neat, and the prices are low. But recently I have had two bad experiences. 1. I tried to volunteer, working in one area of merchandise in which I have professional experience. I was connected with two volunteers who were already working in that area, and an appointment was made for a training session. They didn't show, and didn't even call to cancel. 2. SCRAP now refuses to provide a receipt for purchases. An artist who buys materials needs a receipt for tax purposes. An employee who buys something for their employer needs a receipt in order to be reimbursed. There is no danger that a customer would come back with their receipt trying to get a refund; used merchandise is sold "as is". Considering the cost of a roll of receipt paper, it would cost SCRAP less than a penny for each sale. It takes about two seconds to create a receipt. There is absolutely no excuse for this anti-consumer policy. But wait! I was then offered a receipt, if I would give my email address. There was nothing electronic about this in-person transaction. I suspect they wanted my email so they could sell it to big online businesses, who then would send me lots of spam. No thanks. read more

This is a great place to go for random little craft items. I was specifically looking for scrapbooking stuff and unfortunately did not find anything I liked. But my husband was able to find lots of little pieces of metal to help him build custom car models. There is definitely a lot to look at so give yourself a good hour. read more

As an avid crafter, Scrap is a store that is near and dear to my heart. As someone who cares about the planet, I appreciate the fact that this store helps reuse items that might otherwise go in the trash. Like most thrift stores, Scrap's stock is different with each visit. Usually I have been able to find yarn, fabric and tons of paper for making collages. Once I had to make a vision board for a class and Scrap had tons of magazines that were really cheap. They often have tennis ball cans full of crayons for a few dollars which was great for when I was trying out melted crayon art. They can also have some really random, unconventional craft supplies. Today, I saw mail polish and party noisemakers. One day they had little fur pelts. At the front of the store they often have cute collage/stamping/scrapbook kits that are great for things like cars making. I wish the price of the collage kits was marked on the package since it cost more than I thought, but got it anyway since the money goes for a good cause. I also appreciate how much Scrap contributes to the local crafting community. Precovid, they let my crafting meetup group hold events in their back room. They usually have a booth at Crafty Wonderland where people can make a craft for free. I also took a cross stitch class there that was super fun and enjoyed the drink and craft event they used to have at Tonic. read more

Love this place ! If you are looking for cheap craft supplies or just unique things to up-cycle this should be your go-to place . Most of the stuff is good quality and the volunteers and staff do a fab job of keeping everything well organized . Paints , brushes, fabric , threads,beads, frames , boxes ,wood, tiles, bottles office supplies,stamps, glass pieces, metal knick- knacks ... you probably would find more than what you were looking for .Though the store is organized it does take a fair amount of time to look through the stuff since there is a lot to explore.The prices are Inexpensive and the staff is friendly.They sometimes have Pre-packaged goodies bags for a certain craft and there is a lot of stuff that has been made by kids that you can take inspiration from .Definitely a great place to spend a few hours for people who love being crafty ! read more

I am DIYing some decorations for my son's birthday. Came in looking specifically for fabric (score!) and spools of ribbon (super score! -- they have two whole tubs full). Saved myself a lot of time by not having to make a trip out to the sewing store, where I know I'd spend $$$ compared to this place. After finding what I wanted I browsed the store and was oh so tempted to spend additional coin on all the neat things that caught my eye but alas were not required for the Pinterest project at hand,.. but lordy knows come Halloween or [insert other excuse here] I'll be back for buttons, art supplies, stickers, etc etc. And I feel real good about reusing someone's leftovers. (Though you can find brand new stuff here too.) (Though SCRAP also stocks quite a few things that also make me wonder how they could possible be re-purposed. I really like the diversity of their inventory and they do have some good prices on crafting items so if you're not looking for anything specific, it can be a fun scavenger hunt. Despite the parking chaos, it's also an excellent place to donate craft / craftable items although they are regularly changing the donation policies. The woman who was taking in the donations today was very pushy and negative. One woman's foam ball donation fell from her bag so the wind blew them into their workspace. That woman was inspired to yell, "That's exactly what we are trying to avoid!"...she must be a pain to work with. But the folks inside are very nice, sometimes extra chatty but usually friendly. read more

Why doesn't every major city have one of these? I had an idea for something like this years ago because I love recycled art. I can't imagine there aren't tons of artists through here daily. Tons of stuff you'd suspect and plenty you might not. Couldn't possibly catalog it all, but damn is there a lot here! Scrapbook stuff for days--paper, stamps, pens, crayons, pencils, etc. But also, tons of games, decorations, gift bags, slides, fabric, yarn, office supplies-- just random and amazing. This is a great place for a weekend project of some sort. My first thought when I walked in was that I wish Tim Gunn could bring the Project Runway crew in this joint. read more

I was really hype to find cool stuff, maybe I came on an off day/week. There's lots of crafty stuff that is good for filler, tons of frames, and all sorts of fabric. I love this place. The staff does a wonderful job organizing and categorizing all the donations, even making themed grab bags (this time of year it was Valentine's themed). Keep in mind, while there are a lot of "traditional" crafting supplies like fabrics, yarn, paints, and wood, there are also a lot of crafting books, office supplies, frames, and misc. items as well. (Including this in the hopes that I remember this when it comes time to buy more school supplies). Make sure you plan on at least an hour to explore, as I would circle around and find "new" things with each pass. read more
