Street parking right or front can be sparse and you may need to park a couple blocks away and walk in. Immediately when you walk in is a section of cabinets, then plumbing items, then a full lighting and light fixture section. If you need any kind of drawer pull, handle, or hinge - you just might find it here. They also have a vast wood section. I didn't find what I was looking for but I've scoured really cool tile squares here before. Can be hit or miss. Also a good place to donate leftover building material. read more

This place is pretty cool. They have lots of old cabinets, sinks, lighting fixtures, hardware and wood. Even appliances, to a lesser degree. I loved that they offered classes. I took the intro to electric and it was way over my head. I appreciated the handout, but for me the terms were tossed out with assumed knowledge on the part of the student, making it impossible to follow along at many points. I believe the classes are taught by actual, practicing, specialists. I am not sure, but they may even volunteer. And, as an educator who had to learn how to teach I think the educators here would benefit from providing more structured introductions to the material, including terms and definitions, even examples, before using the term. In some cases, the examples were provided, which helped, but more of that for all terms. If it is a beginner class, assume the student knows nothing because they probably do know nothing! read more

A post from ReBuilding Center's social media caught my eye, and I stopped in to see if the item would work for me. Unfortunately, it was a little damaged and I didn't want to take on the repair. But that's how shopping here goes: check the inventory frequently, cross your fingers that they have the right size or enough of the thing you need, and accept that even if it doesn't work for you it is going to a better home and not the dump. They've got inventory of all kinds, but I'd say primarily it's cabinets, sinks and tubs, lighting, wood, doors and windows. They do have a website with some online inventory and you can always call ahead to see if something is still in stock. I especially appreciate their education opportunities. I've taken a few classes about building tables, and a little free library, and I'm signed up for my next class with them about tiling! read more

The center does a good job of organizing their massive inventory, and I've gotten some good deals there. Customer service could improve. Trying to support them. New and unsure where to drop off, nobody around, and instead of a thank you, I was made to feel stupid (there was a sign saying drop off in alley but also with a big arrow pointed to a loading area). One of the items I was donating wasn't accepted which is fine, but making me feel like I was trying to exploit their organization by dumping garbage was uncool. What about a "thank you anyway" or a "shoot, sorry about that." Geez, sorry I wasted 20 seconds of your time after driving a half hour to support your organization. :( I love this cause and vision. They have some of everything, at really doable cost. And all upcycled means keeping perfectly good material out of landfills and back up as (or on) a wall. You really have to watch out...lot of broken items, leaking dishwashers, unsafe light fixtures for top dollar, needing real repair. Also many great bargains and good stuff. Pricing: I let 2 of the paid staff know they're charging 2x retail for some items, and the response was "some times you pay." Well...it's theft to charge 200% of what something costs retail, for nothing-special reclaimed commodity material like a standard 2x4. So...be responsive. You should have better ethics, staff willing to receive information, and you may find, some liability when selling broken items. Put a disclaimer on that cloth-wrapped wire, or a fixture which cannot be installed at a junction box, or a dishwasher which obviously could leak (check the rust) and wipe out someone's home. read more

This simply a cool place to go to get stuff for your home. That is, if you are a fix-it kind of person. This isn't slot A, tab B, IKEA furniture. This is sanding, refinishing, painting and make that cool piece work in your house. Reclaimed wood flooring, windows, doors, shelving, mantle places, molding and I'm sure fixtures were around as well. I didn't wander for too long. Well isn't this just a neat little place. Signed the girlfriend and I up for a date night for a class here to make boxes. Nevermind that it was during the day for four hours. I complain about the length of time but honestly it was needed. We were reluctant at first to sign up because neither of us have used any of the equipment and we were sure someone was going to lose a limb. However when the class was over we successfully used 3 pieces of equipment and learned things about a measuring tape that we didnt know about. Lots of "why didn't I already know this" moments. The class was super chill. The instructor was informative and cool. I would definitely come here again. The cost of the class was a little steep. About $100 per person but if you're lucky you can sign up for a full scholarship and only pay for the cost of the materials or a half scholarship which is half the cost of the original price. read more

I can only comment from the perspective of a donor. We donated all of our kitchen cabinets this past summer, and have not received a receipt or any statement regarding the value of that donation. Communication was great until the pick up. After the pick up (which we helped load) we were never provided a receipt and our text messages went unanswered. read more

Before going to your big box home improvement store, head here first. I have been here a few times now, and can say that I am fully and completely impressed. As a recent homeowner, I have discovered that essentially any home improvement or maintenance project seems to run on the high side and more over, to get anything g of quality runs even further into pricing. This place makes those improvements hurt the pocket book much less. The extremely spacious location is divided into multiple central areas. One for doors, another for plumbing, electrical and then lumber. Each area is well organized and full of options. Need a solid core door with a leaded glass window? They have it. Need to replace the trim on an exterior window from a 1920's craftsman? Yeah, that too. The rebuilding center resells items from prior renovations, tear downs and other sources, so you get a wide variety of goods to select from and all at a very reasonable price. Their lumber section alone, which has everything from old growth reclaimed lumber to new pine boards is worth the visit. I could gush about this place for pages, but let's just say that you need to start here for all your home improvement needs. The customer service is fantastic and selection is amazing. Parking is an issue, as it is right on Mississippi, but once you get in, you will hardly want to leave. read more

I'm not the handiest person in the world. In fact, Gayle has noted that as an Engineer, I should actually be able to fix a few things. At the same time, I love going into places like this for home improvement ideas and I can actually do a some useful repairs around the house. And for the creative (and inexpensive) reuse of building materials, only Berkeley's Urban Ore really compares to the ReBuilding Center. I spent some time strolling down the memorable byways of the ReBuilding Center, including Bathroom Blvd., Cabinet Court, and Tub Town Turnpike. And when you add the huge selection of doors and windows, there were materials (and lead-based paint) as far as the eye could see! In some ways it's like wandering through a museum or maybe even a time warp in terms of the variety of items available. I also got to see the house cat in action and was entertained with a nice selection of 70s music, including many personal favourites (like China Grove). Outside had almost market like atmosphere as cars and trucks double parked on Mississippi and were either loading up things or donating their cast offs. There's also a neat little show room in the middle inside that features some cool rebuilt furniture and a nice selection of picture frames and mirrors. I found a nice frame, that like other materials here, includes the lead warning. Unfortunately, there was much more that I saw that I just could not fit into my backpack for the trip back to the Bay Area. read more

It has been 13 years since I moved to Portland. For 13 years I have had what can only be described as a love affair with my house, a 100+ year old bungalow that I want to do right by at every DIY opportunity. Friends and neighbors have sung the praises of the ReBuilding Center for as long back as I can remember. And I have visited, too many times to count over the years, only to leave empty-handed, dejected, and wondering what is so wrong with me. Do I lack the eye necessary to locate just the right tile, or replacement molding, or front door? Am I so void of vision that I fail to see what others see there? Is my patience so paper thin that I'm failing to find treasures that are right in front of me? But this winter, it all changed. I was admittedly there to pick up a free coffee mug for all my Mississippi Ave holiday shopping. But since I was there, why not a quick spin through lighting? To my utter amazement, there, in its full, wretched yellow brass glory, was a dining room light fixture that was almost exactly like what I have envisioned for so long. There were some minor deviations from what I would consider perfect, but when you're talking about spending $55 rather than $1,500, you learn really quickly to accept "perfection adjacent" and focus on the deal, the find, the victory! One can of flat chestnut spray paint and some frosted glass shades, and I'm beyond thrilled with the new-to-me light fixture. Funny how 13 years of failure are immediately erased with one victorious lap through lighting. I will now join the ranks of the smug ones who came before me, and I will tell everyone who will listen that they really need to go check out the ReBuilding Center. You owe to your house. And yourself. And if you're lucky, it'll take you less than 13 years to get on board. read more

I bought a used window for $10 and painted the frame gray to match the yellow wall paint. Then I taped a couple of prints at the back of the glass. It made my bathroom really nice. This place is for you if you like creating things out of used materials. They can be very busy at times and hard to find someone that can put a price on your item. Overall I'm pleased! read more

The wood trim in the Portland City Grill is from the Rebuilding Center. If you are tearing out, check with them to see what they accept. If you are remodeling, you can find a huge selection of vintage style items. Some items, like windows, are energy efficient. They have a small store on site with home items and furniture made from reused materials. They have two buildings, one is to the West across the alley. They have a parking lot to the South and the alley is a good loading area. Home despot has a huge selection. The Rebuilding Center has many of the same items at a lesser price. Why does the excited expectation of shopping at the Rebuilding Center often not measure up to the actual experience? We'll it's all about whether you find a treasure. Or not. Well, that and the fact half of the year it can be absolutelysofrickencold in the warehouses. So bundle up people! Don't set your expectations sky high, and enjoy the hunt. I've seen the coolest stuff here: beautiful custom wood cabinets removed from federal buildings, to a multi hued pink flower shaped sink (way cooler than it sounds). We usually end up with something other than what we went to find, but such is the nature of salvaged and donated goods. Prices can be unexpected -sometimes a rippin' good deal and sometimes not, but always, always worth checking out. Today I saved hundreds on stainless steel bathroom accessories and my purchases were rung up by the sweetest cashier in the world. Any disappointment in your quest is easily remedied by the plethora of amazing eating or drinking establishments nearby. read more

I came here to take an intro to carpentry tools class, and I totally spaced on looking through their warehouse of stuff so I can't comment on that. However, the class was FANTASTIC. I walked in never having operated a power tool of any sort other than a drill, and while working through the class I learned that they are not scary, simply looking at a tool will not result in my fingers being cut off, and they are actually quite easy to understand and operate safely. The instructor, April, was patient and gave us a ton of practical information about the tools and made sure to give us free time to experiment as she popped around from station to station to give guidance and feedback. I have two more classes coming up this month and I am beyond excited to learn more. I'm thankful that a resource like this exists in the community. By the way - if you are a woman and considering taking a class here, do it. Even if it's not one specifically for women. There was only one man in my class and the other dozen or so of us were women, and pretty much all of us were in the same boat - "my dad/partner/husband always has done this and I want to finally learn how!". This place is kind of incredible. Its a thrift store for home remodling. They have all kinds of stuff for your home. So far everything I have seen has been used before, but what a resorce for someone trying to match something! It is all devided into type of Items, sinks, lights, tile, cabinets...the list seems to go on forever. While much of the stuff may look like trash to the untrained eye with a little TLC it may match what you already have or at least be in period so it doesn't stick out. Besides that used door here will cost you a lot less then a new one. It does pay to be a bit creative. if the window is slightly different then what you have you may want to shuffle them so it is not right next to another, that kind of thing. Tip: ok its obvious but this is a thrift store. If they don't have what you need, try again later. I have found some great stuff here. read more

I guess I am the only one, but I can't stand this place. Could it possibly be more overpriced? The selection is bad, the cabinets are dented and outdated and missing components (as one would expect in a recycled materials place), but they cost nearly as much as new! Any interesting, antique-y piece they may have managed to scrounge up, say a beautiful old fireplace mantle, is outrageously expensive. Mostly they just have run-of-the-mill doors, windows, random tile bits, and sinks. The exciting "finds" are few and far between, and you will PAY for them. I love the concept, and I think a place like this is a resource every community should have. But I've been to similar recycled building material places in several other towns, and this one is sadly underwhelming. read more

The ReBuilding Center gives me wood. Well, okay, not in the literal sense. But from concept to execution it's pretty neat all around. The idea is that it's a place to donate and/or buy used building supplies. Windows, doors, furniture, fixtures, cabinetry, etc. The 'Goodwill' of construction and remodeling, so to speak. As with any concept along the lines of a thrift store, the supplies here are definitely hit or miss. I probably wouldn't come here to find a fixture to outfit a street of dreams house or anything. But if you're doing a project that's either structural in nature, or you have the elbow grease to spend on touching up a pre-loved cabinet, you sure can save some serious cash buying here. If you can find what you're looking for. I've stopped in to browse quite a few times, but most recently I've been undertaking some home repair and maintenance projects, and my needs have led me here once again. One of my exterior doors is warped, and I'm not sure I want to drop $800 on a fancy new door from Home Depot for what is essentially a side-door. Especially if I want to paint it to match the scheme. A quick trip to the ReBuilding Center nets me multiple options that simply could use a good sanding and repainting, at prices that are a fraction of what I'd pay new/retail. This is, of course, not a perfect solution for every person or every need. As with Goodwill, you do have to dig to find your gems. But when you do, you profit, and so does the organization that runs this center. Well, they don't technically "profit" since it's a non-profit, but they get money to support their cause. And that, to me, is a strong foundation for a store worth supporting. read more

My house is over 100 years old and it was in pretty bad shape when I bought it. The house had been remodeled in the 70s and Home Depot-fied. I wanted to restore it back to it's original charm and thanks to the rebuilding center I'm almost done. They have had almost everything I have needed... no matter how strange or oddly sized. Their prices are excellent. The space is gorgeous and made out of recycled materials. Don't forget your tape measure & gloves. It can be quite an expedition, but well worth it when you find what you're looking for. read more
