I love this place. The staff does a wonderful job organizing and categorizing all the donations, even making themed grab bags (this time of year it was Valentine's themed). Keep in mind, while there are a lot of "traditional" crafting supplies like fabrics, yarn, paints, and wood, there are also a lot of crafting books, office supplies, frames, and misc. items as well. (Including this in the hopes that I remember this when it comes time to buy more school supplies). Make sure you plan on at least an hour to explore, as I would circle around and find "new" things with each pass. read more

Scrap is definitely one of my favorite weird Portland institutions. I love how there's so much stuff here that is stuff that is needed on a regular basis (buttons, binders, thread, cardstock, little bottles, etc) but you might not necessarily need a whole giant pack of, and at scrap you can really buy just one of those things. Also I feel so much better knowing I am using recycled materials and getting pretty much the same quality as if it was new. And on top of everything, it's so affordable!!!!!! my only criticism would be that sometimes the items haven't been cleaned very well, but it's not a dealbreaker and I know they are mostly running on volunteer work. read more

This place is loads of fun. I'm usually here on a mission. Like I need a mannequin head to put one of my wigs on or I need a certain fabric to fashion into a headband. The point of this place is, if you need a little random bit of something, almost anything, they have it. You may need to hunt and burrow around a little bit though. They've picture frames, Christmas ornaments, trophy's, jars, toys, loads of fabric, oodles of buttons and heaps of haphazardly arranged goods all there for the taking. It's clean too. Not like that crappy Goodwill that has the icky bins, so there's no need to wear a biohazard mask and gloves when you go rummaging. Oh, and stuff is super cheap. I hate to be that person but I'm really upset about it. I love going to SCRAP but that was my last visit. Receipt was emailed to me or else I would've mentioned the over charges. I counted $12.40 and was charged $21.35. Big difference. At the counter I did say something but when I stated something like, "sign states .50 unless marked on item." I was ignored and was charged with whatever the Checker felt like since she was training someone, "let's say this is ..."etc. So don't come here if you are on a budget BUT it is for NON-PROFIT. It's literally just a junky thrift store with craft or art supplies. It seems like a great idea but in reality it's so not worth a trip to the city. I'd much rather buy it new, for the same price I might add, and get much more for my money since it won't be half used. I ended up buying a notebook and two tiny rolls of fabric because everything else was over priced for the quality or too much of it was already used. It might be a great place for you if you make found art or sculptures. Not for me though. Oh! And the cashier lady was rude! She very loudly told us to sanitize our hands when we walked in (of course we were going to) and she was asking for customers' personal contact information! read more

Over priced used craft supplies. You can spend a little more money at a craft store and get new supplies. If you need junk though, this is the perfect place to get it. Although I'd rather collect junk from around the house or recycling bins, as it is not worth the trip downtown where there's hardly any parking around the building. I was taking a walk around Portland Oregon on my visit there and I found this completely awesome shop, I think anybody that lives in this town or visits this town should check out this cool little shop, everything is extremely affordable which is so so so nice. I live in California we have nothing like this. This is a huge Warehouse type of shop with thousands of cool pieces of merchandise every kind of little craft piece unique one-of-a-kind and many that are totally worth checking out I so recommend this place... if you're crafty person at all you got to check this place out I was only going to bring home a few things because of my small suitcase but I did fine some cool little pieces here to use for sewing and for crafts, like I said their selection is enormous and a very inspiring environment there .....go check it out read more

Do you love crafting? Do you also like to reuse and repurpose old things? On a budget? Well this is the place for you! This place takes donations from people who have left over crafts or things that can be used as crafts. They are mostly volunteer run and I believe non-profit (not 100% positive on that one). The store is divided into sections ranging from post cards, to fabric, to posters. Within each section... there are lots of bins and things are kind of just thrown in there. You can find scraps of all sorts of stuff. The best part? Super cheap. So bring bills because you have to make a minimum amount for purchase with card. This place is an organized hoarders dream palace for DIY projects!!! It has everything that you might be looking for to complete a project and ALL of your odds and ends needs. If you like bric a brac items, stores that have a good purpose, you believe one person's "trash" is another ones treasure, and you frequently craft things on your own then this is the store for you. You can potentially spend hours there rummaging through things if it's your first time and you're guaranteed to see at least one item that will make you go "wow, I would have never thought to use that for a project"...this is not your typical resale / thrift store and that's what makes this place so special. Omg omg, just go. This is the place that is a blown up, expanded, giant version of my craft room. You know all those things you think "I'm sure I could make something out of this" and so you set it aside instead of tossing it out? That is Scrap times 1000. There are bins of everything you can imagine and tons of stuff you'd never expect. Some of my favorite surprises were bins of "other people's pictures" and thousands of squirt bottle tops (just the tops!). I mean, they have everything you could ever want and more. I went in for thread and yarn and got it for $2 total. I rounded up to $3 since they have that minimum for Apple Pay. Easy decision to support such an awesome and inspiring place. So this is really an odd place.... How the afford the rent there is amazing, guessing it is a pet project of the building owner or something in that regard. My wife was so happy, because it feels like a treasure hunt inside... By college daughter was complaining and making fun at first, but by the time we left she had items to purchase! this was really needed in Portland. Oh crafty folks of the world, this is probably the real reason I am moving to Portland. There is a CRAFT THRIFT STORE!!!! Prices are great. It is a great place to donate stuff too. Even odd things like old mirrors, picture frames, etc. Good way to upcycle and re-purpose. I've heard that there's a rule for a lot of folks in New York: For each thing you bring into your tiny apartment, you must get rid of another in return. Might be a good rule of thumb for me. it's like the inside of my parents garage. Stuff everywhere. Seriously, I didn't know exactly what this place was. I was under the impression it was a stationary, craft store. But it is in a way. Very organized, used, some unused ITEMS - a great, creative store that stocks just about anything you can think of - empty containers, old postcards, art, stuff for costumes, greeting cards, tools, wood pieces, lids, brickabrack, small electronics, sports cards, sports balls, they probably have glitter, seriously everything. It seems kind of junky at first, but oh, there are so many treasures. It is supercool and I really could have spent hours there wandering, looking, browsing. It was near closing, thank god. I loooove SCRAP. That said, there's definitely some new management recently and there are a couple good changes along with some notable increases in prices that are a bit of a bummer. Pictured is an example: a nothing special 1970s quilting booklet that normally goes for 50¢ with a new octupled price tag of $4. All because some crazy person had it listed (not sold, mind you, just listed) for $11 on eBay. Gave me the sads. I can never say enough to give accolades to this place. Scrap is a crafters' paradise!!!! I visit this place almost everyday when I visit PDX. The recent changes in the display threw me off at first, it was like going to your favorite grocery store and layout was changed, but more organized. Bins and bins of rubber/clear stamps, stacks of designer paper, rolls of remnant fabrics, skeins of low end/high end yarns, paint, brushes, etc. if you are a crafter, this place is a must when you visit PDX. This place is awesome! It's a great resource for anyone on a budget and it's not just a place for artists / creative types. Scrap carries all kinds of odds and ends (office supplies, business stuff, vintage books, etc.) They even have a "handmade by locals" corner full of awesome crafty items handmade by portland artists. Something to keep in mind about this place, it's a donation based business so they have different stuff all the time. One week they might have lots of one thing and it's completely gone the next. It's a great place for browsing and getting ideas for new projects though. I scored a ton of awesome fabric scraps, some name brand (clear bags) plastic baggies for my business, and a vintage paper cutter that's in excellent condition all for about $30 when I went the first time. I love this place so much. I try to stop by once a month or so to check out their new items, and always find something useful. Today, I went to find fabric to make a hammock for my cat tower, and found these carpet samples, one that is perfect for my cat to scratch on, along with the fabric I needed for hammock, of course. Then I asked the cashier if they had any sewing kits, and she guided me enthusiastically to a section where she recently made a few kits herself, and was genuinely excited that I bought one. I love SCRAP. A non-profit arts and crafts thrift store. I live nearby so must limit myself to once a month or so otherwise I would be in there all the time. As it is I rarely spend less than an hour browsing around for bargains and ideas. There's always something recent and amazing, never know what I'll find and that's the fun of it. Oh my goodness! How to express how much I love this place? This is one of those places that you almost don't want to tell people about so you can keep coming in and getting good items. Scrap is a place that sells donated art supplies! I have always been a crafty and artistic person and buying supplies new is crazy expensive! The fist time I went there we got a big bag stuffed with supplies for only about $10! The same amount of supplies would have easily cost me $50 new, if not more. The second time we went we spent just over $10 again for supplies to make a cat tree. Which turned out great! A new cat tree of the same size would have cost at least $60. They have office supplies, fabric, pencils, pens, dry erase markers, ribbon, metal pieces, wood pieces, plastic boxes of all sizes, and so much more.
