SD is incredible, and La Jolla the gem in its crown. Many reviewers are confused about this spot, however. Scripps Coastal Reserve is not a beach and it is not a hiking trail. Technically, its a small plot of land that serves as a public access coastal view point. It's only a four minute walk from the entrance to the bluff. You'll stand atop a steep cliff with amazing views to the ocean and beaches below. This sandy loop also offers info about local flora. Look up for views of birds (particularly the rare Peregrine falcon!) and soaring hang gliders. Areas are roped off for safety reasons - lots of erosion in this area- so you might want to watch the sunset from La Jolla Shores beach instead, just down the street. read more

Breathtaking views and a nice quiet reprieve from all of the goings on of La Jolla Shores. Also a popular surf spot. If you're looking to get a nice walk or jog in, try starting down at the end of The Shores Hotel beach and go all the way past the pier to the end of the Coastal Reserve and back. Do it with no shoes on for the Earthing effect. It's worth noting that you will see a rocky area to the northern most part of the Reserve. If you navigate over the rocks you'll make it to the Torrey Pines Coastal Reserve. It's not as easy as it looks and if you get caught in high tide it could be bad news. Unless you're in good shape, I would advise against it. read more

Tide pools here at a low tide of -0.4 pretty great. Not that many pool areas, but the ones here had a good amount of sea life. Saw small hermit crabs, minnow like fish, sea slugs, anemones, small crabs, mussels, barnacles, and a hidden octopus. read more

GORGEOUS quick loop in La Jolla. As others have said, it's flat and very easy to navigate. That doesn't take away from the beauty though - such a wonderful place to enjoy views of the ocean, surrounding nature, and massive homes in the area. Very clean and not too crowded. Hidden in the La Jolla Farms neighborhood just west of UCSD main campus and north of SIO, this is another great place to view sunsets over the Pacific. There is room to picnic, as well as a loop walk that takes you to the top of the bluffs -- about 4-5 minutes. read more

I heard of this place from a local on how its such a great view of the sunset and its not as populated like La Jolla. I'm so glad she mentioned this to me. It is a short hike and there are areas marked to not pass just due to loose rocks. But its such an amazing view. With a rock where you can sit and hang out. The big house on the right side is apparently the Von's owner. Anywho beautiful view with nothing in the way or any smelly smells. Unfortunately it was super cloudy at the time so we couldn't see the sunset, but it was still an amazing time. Definitely gonna come back! read more

Very short hiking trail that is all flat and easy to walk through. There are many plants there, many have labels of what plants are there. The trail goes in a circle and continues towards a cliff which has a very nice view of La Jolla and the beach. You get to see many people doing activities such as paragliding and surfing. The paragliders come so close that you can even talk to them! The views are great and it's a very calm walk, easy for bringing children along. read more

One of the best places for not only hiking, meditation, but also for great sightseeing! The hike is not that long (~15-30 min) as the trail is one loop with a stop in the middle at the cliff, where you can pause for great photos and just stare out into the water with your loved one. Let me just tell you that the view is absolutely beautiful and breathtaking! I think my group and I stayed there for a good 45 minutes just basking in the view of the waters. Occasionally, you will see some people parasailing over the beach, which is pretty cool. **Parking can be a bit tricky. I recommend finding some free parking in the residential area that is close to the entrance to the location. read more

I would have never known about UCSD's "secret" hideaway... Small area hidden within a residential area. Parking could be difficult since there are lot of "red" tow away zones, and security patrol manning the streets. You may have to trek to the trail, but it's def well worth the distance. Dirt paths so be mindful of the attire you wear. The trails lead to the ocean view cliffs and views of humongous homes overlooking the blue seas. You also get to see the gliders fly by and you get a great view of Scripps Pier. Bring a blanket for a small picnic or sit on one of the logs for a breathtaking view of the sunset. read more

Pretty flat loop in La Jolla that circles through a lot of California scrub. Has descriptions of some of the common plant and animal types of you're interested in learning about native vegetation and creatures. When you get by the coast, you get some great views if blacks beach, the waves and some big fancy houses. I'm so glad that this place was preserved! it's gorgeous and I love walking above on the cliffs or below on the sand, but I'm a little concerned about 2 things: 1) Some of the large rocks on the sand have ugly tags from USD research. I get that they need to research, but why such ugly white plastic that looks like pollution? 2) Where is the protection? It seems anyone can just come here and graffiti and I even saw 3 ladies leaving with buckets of who knows what? The signs say not to remove anything but clearly, these ladies were. How can it be a reserve if no one is protecting it? Haunama Bay in Hawaii is a Preserve too and they seem to take it more seriously than we do. Anyway... it's gorgeous I just think it could be managed better in a few areas. read more

This is actually a public access coastal view point. From the "trail head" to the coastal bluff it is a four minute walk. This is a nice place to see panoramic ocean views over Black's Beach but is not really a hiking trail in the sense that you will get a good workout. It's a short, flat loop trail w/info abt the plant life. Due to coastal erosion, portions of bluff edges are roped off even though we saw numerous people sitting on the edge to watch the sunset. It is a nice place with great views. The loop trail it self is short about a mile, it is flat and well maintained. There is 2 hour street parking. We came on a Saturday afternoon and there was plenty of parking. My husband had visit this place for a UCSD biology extract assignment earlier this year and saw some wildlife today we only saw lizards and a lot of flowers. The views are great definitely a nice place to see the sunset, have a romantic picnic or just to watch the waives. It is a lot less crowded then Sunset Cliffs or Gliderport. And with any train on the cliffs be careful while we were there we saw SDFD and SD Lifeguards doing a Cliff-Rescue near by. If you are hiking the Ho Chi Minh Trail and want a nice relaxing place to hangout after or before this is the place for you. The Ho Chi Minh Trail is very close by. read more

This is the best view of La Jolla! You can park along the sidewalks on the street for free before walking the trail to the cliffs. The trail itself is less than a mile, and you reach a picturesque view overlooking the beach from the cliffs and are not surrounded by people. There are no real boundaries or roped off areas on these cliffs, so children should definitely beware when walking along the edges. I definitely preferred this area over La Jolla Cove (where the seals are), as tourists swarm the area and there is absolutely no place for parking. read more

Great view of the sunset here. There's only street parking available. Directly outside the entrance are red zones and two hour parking, all day. If you plan to stay longer, then you may need to park on La Jolla Shores. It's a short trek to the edge of the cliff, but a bit dusty so I would recommend wearing shoes. There are plenty of spots to watch the sunset. You can sit on a rock or a log, but would be more comfy in a beach chair or blanket. Views are awesome. This place was a little difficult to find. It's nested between the residential area. The entrance to the reserve is a black fence with a small opening between housing. Parking around the place are 2 hrs parking. If you are going to go to this area for a hike, don't. There isn't much hiking to be done here. It's a very small reserve and not too many trails. You can walk around the place in a few minutes. If you go here for the view, than yes it's a great place. You can see all of La Jolla Shores and the Scripps pier. One of the best view around San Diego. The Cliff is very high you can see far into the distance. A great place to see the sunset. There not much to do at this reserve nor to observe while hiking. Despite the small walk, this has become a place to visit more than once during various seasons and times, because there is always something different to see. My first time I visited, it was a misty foggy morning as if nothing was around me on my walk besides a few bushes on the ground and dirt a foot away. It wasn't until I walked to literally the edge of a cliff that I saw 1. myself at this high edge and 2. a seemingly empty, yet majestic piece of water far far far below. At about 1/2-1hr later the sun then moved almost towards me and showed me more of the beautiful views including more of San Diego, the beaches below and the large houses that existed- including the people who take care of their very steep yards. read more

The view is absolutely gorgeous!.. This short trail to the edge of the cliffs is supposedly only really known by the students of UCSD and some locals who actually live in the area. Nevertheless, the trail is only a short 10-15 minutes from the neighborhood street to the edge of the cliffs and ends with an amazing view of the ocean and the old UCSD Chancellor's mansion... The outlook of the ocean is just breathtaking.. The area is also quite large so other people will not become a huge problem especially if you are looking for a romantic spot ;) The cliffs are rather steep as well so I wouldn't recommend climbing down to the beach.. TIP: Turning off Torrey Pines Rd onto La Jolla Shores Dr.. Make the first right onto La Jolla Farms Rd. Continue down the street a little and you will see a huge vacant spot on the left hand side (Used to be blocked off by just a metal gate but was replaced by a small fence at one point). I found out about this place during my physics lab at UCSD to measure time with the sunset. There's a pathway from campus that plenty of students take to get there. By car, the best place to park is at Whitecliff and La Jolla Farms. Parking is for 2 hours. Head towards the black gate and you'll see and open doorway to the path towards the cliffs. You'll get an amazing view of the big blue and the coastline from La Jolla Shores to possibly Del Mar (correct me if I'm wrong). Below you is Black's Beach which is also known as the nude beach. So far, haven't seen anyone actually nude. There's a separate path to get to Black's and that requires climbing up a huge hill on the way back. If you get a chance to visit, I'd suggest you visit at sunset. It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in San Diego especially on a clear and perfect day. read more

The Knoll is open to the public at this time. However if people continue to ignore the common sense rules of the reserve this will change. There is a discussion which calls for limiting the number of people in the reserve and only open the reserve when it can be properly staffed. Contrary to the attitudes of entitlement by some of the reviewers, the Knoll is not a recreational park "maintained by UCSD" and is not intended to be a shortcut to the beach.. Researchers and people who are interested in preserving the land are picking up the trash left by the egotistical and careless. The cliff face has recently become home to Peregrine Falcon after fifty years of absence (http://nrs.ucsd.edu/img/Peregrine_Chicks_sm.jpg). Using the Knoll as a shortcut to the beach traumatizes wildlife. Walking on the soft rock of the cliffs speeds erosion and inhibits the growth of critically needed plants. The rules of the reserve are few and simple. Please be responsible and follow them: * No dogs. * Walking only (i.e. no bicycle riding) * No littering. * Use only working trails. * Stay off the trails which are closed. * Stay off the cliff face * Stay on the correct side of the markers. Do what you can to protect this last section of undeveloped coastal property. You have every right to speak up to preserve the land and all the living things which make it their home. if you see someone degrading the environment or bothering the wildlife, say something, Ask them to follow the simple rules which will keep this special place as beautiful as it is (and available to all) now and for years to come. read more

A beautiful treasure hidden both by the super-exclusive neighborhood that surrounds it and some amusing confusion over its name on maps. On maps, this patch of land is titled "San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park," but it's actually a natural reserve that's part of the UC system. Though the Scripps Reserve area technically includes the beachfront area too, this location is the "Knoll" or blufftop area that's accessible through the La Jolla Farms subdivision. Parking can be surprisingly difficult (watch the signs carefully; there's a full-time private security guard just itching to ticket people), but off La Jolla Farms Rd. you should find some spots. There are also bike racks located inside the gate to the reserve, which isn't obvious at first. Note that there are no facilities at all here- not even benches. Once you find the reserve and cross the threshold, you'll find yourself atop a windswept knoll with excellent views of several side canyons and a half-mile walking path in front of you. While some of the interpretive signs on the path are a bit juvenile, there are a few good ones, including one that gives a fine overview of the visible geologic formations and some neat history of the area. There's even the remnant of a WWII-era earthen bunker at the bluffline that looks pretty cool as well as a lot of nice wildflowers and blooming plants on the trailside. At the cliffs at the apogee of the trail, some typically scolding signs implore visitors to stay away from actually looking over the edge of the cliff. I dared to defy the signs and was rewarded with a wonderful view of the surrounding canyons, the ocean, and a good part of the Scripps Institute. You think they might designate an actual viewpoint in the future instead of trying to dissuade hikers from taking in any part of a view... Did I mention nobody seems to know about this place? It's been completely quiet when I've been- no other visitors. Excellent place to just wander for a few hours. read more
