Scuppernong Books is an independent bookstore in Downtown Greensboro. It is located inside a building built in 1898. The building served as a feed-and-seed store, a record store and a used-appliance store. The bookstore opened in 2013, and its extensive renovation preserved the exposed brick walls and the high pressed-tin ceilings. They added hand-carved bookcases. The walls are olive green, and the original windows let in plenty of natural light. The store was named after the scuppernong grape, the North Carolina state fruit. The store's "fox and grape" motif, visible on its signs and literature, is also a nod to Aesop's fables. The bookstore is cozy and welcoming, with areas to lounge and even a seating bar at the front of the store. The bookstore carries new and used books, with a good variety. You will find banned books and many about social justice. The store has stood up to censorship. The genres are clearly marked, and it is easy to browse and shop. They even have staff picks with reviews. I like that North Carolina authors are featured. The store partners with other local businesses. The cafe has coffees, teas, wines and craft beers. They have pastries from Loaf Bakery and Swedebread. The sandwiches are from Jerusalem Market. The specialty teas come from Vida Pour Tea. Service here is welcoming, helpful and low-pressure. They let you browse without following you around so you can take your time and explore. I highly recommend visiting Scuppernogg Books if you are looking for a local business to support or just like visiting old buildings. In the digital age, it is so nice to connect with others and actually browse the shelf to find my next read. Still the absolute best bookshop in all of Greensboro. I love that I can order any book and have it delivered to the store. Some books have been harder to find as of recent, but I knew Scuppernong would not let me down. I placed my order online, and they sent me an email when it was ready to pick up in store. I was kindly greeted at the front door, and had my book within a minute. I did take an extra few seconds to wander the rest of the store, as it is such a lovely space. The sense of peace and calm the store has to all who enters cannot go unnoticed. I left with my required book in hand, and a smile on my face. read more

I got gifted a gift certificate to Scuppernong books in downtown Greensboro on Elm Street. We found easy 2 hour parking on the street nearby. They have a small cafe area and large book selection new and used. They are serious about books and have an awesome inventory. Not a chain. I got two children's books for the grand kids. I've been super excited to stop by here for the books and cafe, but honestly, I was a little disappointed today. I will start by saying that the book selection is AMAZING. I love the selection, I love the curated displays, I love the political stance they take in what they do and do not stock. I love everything about it. In fact, I spent $117 and probably would have kept going, but I cut my visit short. With that said, this is the LOUDEST bookstore I have ever been in, in my entire life. Clearly there was some kind of children's event going on, because there were dozens of small kids running around. And I love that it is child friendly-- that is vital to a community. But I want to emphasize that the kids were RUNNING around. And screaming, and "playing" recorders. I expect a certain level of chatter and squealing when there are so many kids, but I do think that part of the importance of kid friendly space is that it is a way to teach children the social norms of a given environment. I.e., "we don't play tag inside bookstores." Ultimately, it was so loud and chaotic that we didn't end up staying to check out the cafe. It would have been like trying to enjoy books and tea inside a Chuck E Cheese. Super overstimulating and generally unpleasant. I was actually really torn when deciding how many stars to give this-- I am super excited about my new books and I am always happy to see progressive businesses that are family friendly. So, in theory, I like this a lot. But did I, personally, actually enjoy it that much while there? Not really. I'll have to come back another day. I really wanted to like this. I'll be sure to check the events calendar and avoid times when they're hosting things with kids, since clearly some people treat that as a free for all. read more

I love supporting local businesses and this one is a woman owned book store with coffee ! What's not to love. Not only can books be purchased in store which is my favorite way you're also able to go online and order for pickup or to your door. They have new , used , for children , adults , herbalism , fantasy ... you name it. There's seating near the coffee bar. However there is also seating in the back where the used books are where you can read, but they also host events that are on their website to support other local stores , artist , and authors. read more

My husband, my Dad, and I visited this bookstore while on a day trip to Greensboro yesterday. The store is much bigger than it looks from the outside. They sell both new and used books. There is a bit of something for everyone. They have tables and comfy chairs in the back of the store which makes it a great place to study or work. There were a few people there studying. One of them took a stretch break and told us he studies there all the time and asked if he could help us find anything. How nice! My husband ordered an iced chai latte from the coffee shop inside the store and he said it was amazing. Very cool that there is a coffee shop inside the book store I was looking for a very particular genre of books and someone helped me find where to look in the new section and in the used section. We stumbled onto this place on a Friday evening while walking around the area before a performance at the Tanger Center. We love books and we enjoy wine, so this place was like a little slice of heaven. My wife purchased a book and we enjoyed some vino before the performance. Came across an independently owned neat bookstore in downtown Greensboro. They sell new, used and even some rare books. Three words describes this bookstore: books, wine, community. Check out their website for events. Disappointed that I missed their wine tasting last Saturday. The name, "scuppernong" (muscadine native to southern US), caught my attention. I'm a wine enthusiast. Being a proud Grammie that I am, I headed to the kids section to find something for my granddaughter. She's only 21 months old but already addicted to books. Lol She signs and says ,"books" whenever she wants you to read to her. So excited when I found a book called, "Kitty Corn" and a plush animal that goes with it. Need the vaccination card as a proof. This store has a small selections of books but great selections beyond imaginable. The recommendations always stand out and all were great recommendations. Adorable bookstore with a well-stocked bar and friendly service! I popped into this place while waiting for a show at The Carolina Theater. The space is cozy and exudes warmth, making you want to stay for hours, just as a good bookshop should. The selection of books is smaller than you'd find at most stores, but the choices seem to be thoughtfully curated. I especially loved the selection of children's books, which were timely, relevant, and educational. Having worked in the Kid's Department of a large bookstore for several years, I remember parents asking for recommendations in which a black or Hispanic child was the main character; or they'd be looking for a book about recycling and taking care of our planet; or they wanted something that would teach their little girl that she was strong and brave - this bookstore has all of those in spades. They seem to do a fair amount of readings and book signings, since I noticed a space for this in the back of the shop and plenty of signed copies mixed in amongst the book stacks. The cafe/bar has a nice selection of beer, wine, coffee, and tea. I went with a masala chai latte, but I liked the beer and mead choices! They have 3 craft beers on tap, and about a dozen or so more bottled. And you can order wine by the glass or by the bottle. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. read more

According to their website, Scuppernong Books opened on December 21, 2013. Imagine opening a book store in the age of Amazon where Barnes & Noble is barely surviving and beloved bookstores are closing. You'd have to be crazy. Okay, add a nice coffee bar. A little less crazy. Oh add some nice snacks. Getting better. Next add fresh made Jerusalem Market dishes delivered to your seat at the bar. Okay, now add a great selection of local and nearby authors and mix in a signing and presentation area with authors around the world. Finally add in great craft beers and wines - ad occasional wine tastings. Scuppernong is a Carolina Sweet Grape, after all. Book clubs meet there. Real advice is given, and Steve and the staff are warm as can be. This is a great spot to find a book, a brew, and even some baklava. I think this might be the best bookstore I have ever visited! The shelves are lined with all the best genres. There is a coffee and wine bar. There is plenty of space to sit and read a book, and perfect low key music. There are bathrooms and several book clubs you can join virtually. All the staff members were so kind and helpful! You can hang out with friends or get work done, and they also put on great events. I've been to many poetry and fiction readings they've hosted. Scuppernong is a great place. The only one star review is from someone referring to drag queens as "graphic adult entertainers" which is homophobic and transphobic rhetoric. If you follow those kinds of beliefs I doubt you read anyway, so I'm not sure why you need to go to a bookstore! Support local business and be as gay as you want at Scuppernong. I'm not in Greensboro too often, but on a recent overnight visit I was glad to find this small indie bookstores downtown. It seems to be very community-oriented, with lots of local readings, hosting book clubs and so on. There's also a reasonably priced coffee bar that sells sandwiches and such as well. The service was friendly, and the owner seems very knowledgeable. Along with an intelligent selection of new and used books of a general nature, I was impressed to find a sizable collection of books at Scuppernong on Black Mountain College , the radical experimental college near my hometown of Asheville that was so important to the Abstract Impressionist art movement and even the Beats, along with other art and cultural movements during its relatively short history from the early 1930s to 1956. (There is now a museum on the college in Asheville, which is expanding to a larger location in late 2018. It's also possible at times to visit the two sites of Black Mountain College, one of which is now a boys' camp and the other remains a religious meeting and assembly site.) Greensboro is no Asheville (or Charlotte or Durham or Chapel Hill-Carrboro) yet, but bookstores like Scuppernong go a long way to turning a sprawling group of suburbs and strip centers into a real city. read more

I am embarrassed that I have lived in the Piedmont Triad (W-S) for 10 years and I did not know this store even existed. Maybe it hasn't been open that long? In any event, browsing around downtown Greensboro, we happened upon this local, independent bookstore, which is a treasured part of a diminishing number of communities. Add to it a wine/coffee bar that serves food, too, and you have a winning combination. The space is big and light, with some cool seats in the front window area. They have a well-curated selection of local and national authors, as well as some really nice used books in the back (I picked up an "Oprah's Book Club" edition of Jonathan Franzen's "The Corrections" I had been looking for). There was a discussion group happening in the back area while we were there, and some guys playing chess in the front. The only thing that would make this place better is if it was in Winston-Salem. I will be stopping back in this coming week to hear a book reading by one of my colleagues at Wake Forest. It's a shame he can't do that in Winston, too. read more

Grab a latte, a glass of wine, or a cup of tea, and you are good to go! Books- The best thing about this book store is that it is well stocked for its size. It is divided by your standard fiction/nonfiction/children sections, and it has a huge used book selection in the back. Totally worth checking out! Quality books for a great price. What I think is really unique about Scupp. Books is lately they have been featuring a hand written "note" from someone who read the book and why they recommend it. I find this to be a very unique idea and some of the notes from readers really draw you in. In my opinion, books in general are meant to inspire, inform, or awaken some type of emotion within the mind or soul. I feel as though the 'note' facilities this enlightenment. Well done by the owners/staff! The store has a nice cafe area, where you can sit at the bar or the window seat, and order coffee, tea, a latte, OR you can order a glass (or bottle) of wine from a generous list of reds and whites... some of which are on tap! Wine on tap? Who knew!!! Craft beer is now also available, although I have not tried any yet. Perhaps my next trip back to GSO! This is my first time seeing a bookstore feature wine and beer....and such a plentiful selection, so I'm impressed and I think you would be too! Food is available as well (no worries, you won't go hungry haha). Make sure you take a walk to the very back of the store. Plenty of seating and a large table. They are are extremely community oriented and have a lot of local readings, book clubs, etc. I recall when I lived in Greensboro a few years ago, they had a celebration of Flannery O'Connor and her writings. She is one of my favorite authors and for the most part, underrated I think (at least up here in NJ). They featured her books in the front of the store and then had discussions on certain nights to commemorate her work and life. A very active, engaging, community book store. This is a nice local bookstore that sells both retail priced new books as well as used books. As Holly K noted, it is quite a bit larger than it looks on the inside compared to the outside, and they do have quite a good selection here. They have chairs and tables to study at, and they also have a little outdoor patio where you can enjoy your book in the sunshine. It also has a little cafe where you can get drinks, order sandwiches, and order some wine. They have a nice selection of stuff, however I opted to just drink some iced tea so I can't speak for the rest of their offerings. One of the owners here, (John I think) seemed to be very passionate about the store and had a lot to say about the community here, and was more than happy to talk about some of the clubs they knew about and upcoming events going on. However, I wish this place was easier to navigate. It doesn't seem to be accessible to people with mobility impairments or people who might be obese which is a huge bummer for me because I really want to give this place 5 stars. The passageways are very narrow, with very little room to spare, and that makes it very difficult to move at times, even for me and I do not have a mobility impairment, nor am I obese. Still, it's a bookstore, and a pretty good one at that. Accessibility issues aside, I really enjoy coming here. read more
